Even if it is far from being a perfect solution, it is better to propose

[Bug 292836] Re: Cannot browse samba shares

2008-11-12 Thread Giorgos Koklas
I can confirm this bug. I set up a fresh install of ubuntu. and share some
folders using Nautilus right click menu. After ubuntu installs samba I create a
user with smbpassw and edit the smb.conf so that workgroup matches my
workgroup.
The network consists of a winxp home machien and an ubuntu machine.

On the windows machine: I can access shares just fine. When prompted I
enter the required user password and the share is accessible.

On Ubuntu: At first everything works fine. After a few reboots though the
following start to happen:
1. Nautilus does not remember to the shared emblel on the shared folder,
although it does remain shared and accessible from other machines.
2. If I go to Places--Network nothing shows up in Nautilus, as if there is no
network (Only the default Windows Network icon shows which point to nothing
of course).
3. I can access the shares if I go to Places--Connect to and specify the
shared path.
4. Gnome commander seems to work But not always. Can not seem to be able to
reproduce the reasons why it does not in some cases.

This is specific to Gnome. Everyhting seems to work fine once I install
konqueror on ubuntu and access the shares through it. Really annoying
bug.

[Bug 294728] Re: Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-11-12 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
@ Mathias Gug

Is that what you did need?

Perhaps that can help you: Public shares inside a directory (in this
case it is /home/farber/) are possible only if the access to the
*whole* directory is allowed for everyone. This is not normal. It should
be enough to allow access to the share. It had always been like that
before, and it is so in Intrepid again, but not in Hardy. Nobody would
like to set his entire home directory to mode 0777 to be able to install
public shares!

Installing and rolling back to 2.6.25-2 did not fix the problem for me.

Also, this does not appear to affect all shares. I have shares to two

Unfortunately, I don't have the rights to view the smb.conf on either of
them.

Does anyone else have this?

Re: [Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-11-12 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Aha. That'll be it - setting the desired width height to be same as
the screen size will trigger the legacy fullscreen support in the
Compiz workarounds plugin. Presumably Wmii also supports this
(obsolete) method of making a window fullscreen.

I'm a bit surprised that Metacity doesn't support this old fullscreen
method.

[Bug 297095] [NEW] Misleading meaning of completely removed

2008-11-12 Thread clubsoda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

When completely removing a package, the confirmation window offers to do the
following:-
To be completely removed (including configuration files).
However, in many (most?) cases, the configuration information which the user
wishes to remove is hidden under the /home directory and won't be touched by
Synaptic.

Perhaps it is an unfortunate symptom of having used Windows® for years
that when all else fails, reinstall! For example, after tweaking some
settings an application ceases to function in some important way and is
broken. What is the user to do, start searching through the hidden
dot files in their home directory and start removing files manually?
I'm told that package managers, as a matter of principle, must not touch
users' personal settings, in which case my complaint raises a separate
issue.

That said, I think Synaptic falls short of the expectation as far as removing
configuration files, and that the confirmation window could help steer people
in the right direction if reworded slightly, such as:-
To be completely removed (including system-wide configuration files)
or even better:-
To be completely removed (excluding personal configuration files).

Regards.

[This report refers to Synaptic 0.61ububtu9 on Xubuntu Hardy].

PS: On a side note, it is not clear whether reinstallation involves a
simple removal or a complete removal, so I end up not using that
feature at all.

Hi,
Oops! Looks like I gave you the wrong link there, that's for
developers/triagers to debug program crashes. I think the best option for this
would be to let the system automatically file it for you. You can do this by
running:
ubuntu-bug gimp
This will attach all information needed and will create a new bug report,
therefore I will close this one and work can begin when the other has been
filed. Please ensure you cause the error/problem first before you run the above

[Bug 296782] Re: Network Manager conflict with bridge defined in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-11-12 Thread Christof Warlich
I could finally fix the problem by explicitly adding

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual
up ifconfig $IFACE 0.0.0.0 up
down ifconfig $IFACE down

to /etc/network/interfaces. Thus, the complete file looks like this:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual
up ifconfig $IFACE 0.0.0.0 up
down ifconfig $IFACE down

auto tap0
iface tap0 inet manual
up ifconfig $IFACE 0.0.0.0 up
down ifconfig $IFACE down
tunctl_user christof

auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports eth0 tap0

It seems like eth0 will by default be configured for IP when it is _not_
mentioned
in /etc/network/interfaces, so one must explicitly tell the system _not_ to do
so
if this is not desired.

I hope this helps,

Christof

[Bug 292973] Re: X apps are receiwing BadAlloc when working over ssh

2008-11-12 Thread Marcel Schulte
Hello,

if the remote system is Solaris 10 it needs patch 119759-45 (on SPARC)
or 119060-44 (on x86), for Solaris 9 patch 112785-64 (SPARC) or
112786-53 (x86).

I don't know if the error occurs from other systems but at least the
Solaris patches work as expected.

Hope this helps,
Marcel

[Bug 181888] Re: mdadm problems after suspend

2008-11-12 Thread David Jaša
It is possible that mdadm isn't faulty -- I have similar problems with
my root partition (JFS) since upgrade to hardy. I didn't originally
report it, because I was using fairly broken system and non-standart
suspend method (uswsusp), but now happened the same with intrepid.

In my case:
1) computer suspends fine
2) upon resume, comuter hangs with 'waking...' message, and responds to nothing
(even to sysrq)
3) after reboot, superblocks do not match - one reports FM_CLEAN and lower
serial? number (item 18), the other FM_MOUNT and higher number
4) fsck.jfs refuses to check such fs, I've got to manually edit superblocks
with jfs_debugfs so they match each other and reboot with power cord plugged to
perform fsck

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-11-12 Thread Max Bowsher
Here is a workaround that can be enacted purely using non-root config:

1. Add the line unset SSH_AUTH_SOCK to ~/.xsessionrc (creating it if it
doesn't exist).
2. Run gnome-session-properties and untick GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper.

The first makes /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90x11-common_ssh-agent not decide
that it should not start since there is already an existing agent. The
second stops the g-k-r envvars being reinjected into the X session at a
later point in startup.
