[Bug 311116] [NEW] programs cause gdm to crash
Public bug reported: I upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope yesterday. Haven't had a ton of time to use it but I did come across a bug. I can't use various programs. I first noticed it when I went to open Biniax-2. It is like I hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the xserver. but it does it by itself. first thought it could be the fglrx driver. I saw that the new XOrg could cause problems so I switched to the ati opensource driver. No dice. This also happens with Wine. When I open WineCFG it too causes the system to crash and return to the login screen. Something that may be connected is I am having trouble with the gnome-settings-daemon. When I go to System Preferences Appearance and a message saying: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. I peered into my logs. I put the sections from 5 minutes before crash to 5 minutes after. Best I could anyway. Figured if you need more info from a particular you could ask. I am using Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 64bit Kernel-2.6.28-3-generic. gnome-settings-daemon 2.25.2ubuntu3 not sure what other packages could effect this but if there is just ask. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- programs cause gdm to crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Jim/Tom: As Steve said, this is very likely to be a separate issue (my guess would be the network-manager changes in 8.10 that expose wireless connections very late in the boot/login process), could one of you please file a separate bug ? I don't want to delay publication of this fix because of disconnected problems. Hi Calbocano, thanks for the hint! I tried to print with Picasa, but that didn't work either, probably another issue, though. Re: [Bug 310460] Re: On MacBook Pro laptop with 2.6.28 kernel, keyboard does not work during boot (password entry for encrypted root)
With regard to #1, I am interested in the results. However, this does look like a kernel issue. I did a little Internet research and I couldn't find any evidence of others having this issue. I understand that you are using the alpha of Jaunty, but I was wondering if you had heard of anyone else having this issue. I doubt that it's likely to be a firmware issue. Re: [Bug 306168] Re: Unable to connect network drive SAMBA Share
Hello, Usually I use only Nautilus to connect to my NAS. I did not try anything by command-line. The symptoms are simple to explain : I explore my smb shares with nautilus, open the icon of my NAS, select one of the shares I created in my Freecom Web-based interface and after some times Nautilus returns to my home directory. [Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot
After reboot, it seems to pop back to using Auto eth0 and the default settings (dynamic IP, automatic MTU, etc.) no matter what I've tried. I added another connection (manual eth0) and set it to connect automatically (and unchecked connect automatically in Auto eth0), yet when I rebooted the machine it still came up on Auto eth0 with the dynamic IP. I can manually reselect manual eth0 and then it's OK, but that's not really acceptable, it needs to come up right after boot without extra user interaction. Furthermore, the automatic MTU it comes up with is wrong! The value I see is 576, instead of 1500, which causes the vpnc program to fail. This happened on two completely different pieces of hardware. [Bug 302392] Re: Mouse buttons and wheel not responding
That was my first guess too. That it has to do something with Xorg or at least nvidia drivers. I never tried single screen setup, so I can't really tell for sure. About running xmoto. When my mouse button freeze, I switch to gnome- terminal, if it's not already open use ALT-F2. Then run xmoto. Put it to full screen ALT-ENTER, mouse cursor will be locked in-game. Press on the up/down arrows few times, then put the game back in windowed mode, ALT- ENTER again. Now, move the mouse cursor (wich shouldn't be grabbed by xmoto) and move it right on top of the mouse cursor in xmoto which is a large grey arrow in the top left corner of game window. By some magic, both mouse cursors will 'merge' and you'll see only the xmoto cursor which will be working inside the xmoto window. It this doesn't help, put xmoto back in full screen and back again in windowed mode. Yeah, it sounds like voodoo, but this actually works for me. -- Mouse buttons and wheel not responding https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/302392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

From upstream's blog post: * Integration of history completion in the location entry. * libSoup is used in place of GIO for loading icons, viewing sources, saving files, and for the first time icons are actually cached on disk. * The side panel gained a compact mode to take up considerably less space. Bookmarks in the toolbar finally match the menu and the panel at any time. * The Web Inspector [in] WebKitGtk is now supported. * The beginning of unit testing. * The ground work for an extension interface has been done, extension modules can be written in C at the moment. Bindings to Lua and/ or Python are planned for the future. Note that the side panel doesn't currently expose the extension management, but the Page holder was actually rewritten as one of the example extensions. * Change build dependency to libsoup (from gvfs and gtksourceview). * Rewrite manpage and package description. -- Trent W. RE: [Bug 252094] Re: [i965] Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10
I have tested my system with Jaunty alpha-2 and the results are not very encouraging. The performance indication provided by glxgears dropped even further and is now in the 200 fps range, about half of what it was with ubuntu 8.10 final and way below what it was with ubuntu 7.04. For the sake of clarity, I am using an Intel DG965WH board with the G965 chipset, which includes the X3000 graphics subsystem. Refering back to my initial bug report, I did run tests with FlightGear 1.9 under Windows recently. It can achieve frame rates around 25-30 fps. This indicates to me that the hardware setup in general is quite capable of executing the task at hand.I am not very familiar with your terminology of moving a bug upstream, please let me know in more detail what action you expect me to take. [Bug 311136] [NEW] Installation of a manually downloaded .deb package in Kubuntu fails without notification
Public bug reported: Hello! I use Kubuntu 8.04 with all updates installed which offered by default and some additional programs from the repositories. Yesterday I wanted to install the current version of the Adobe Reader. However, I couldn't find adobe reader or acroread in the four official package sources. So I downloaded the .deb package from the Adobe website. In the default file manager (Dolphin? I would have to reboot to find that out) I clicked on the deb file. A program came up (IIRC not Adept) which offered me the option to install it. But it seems it wasn't installed altough I clicked on the corresponding button and it seems like it did something. The reason that I didn't work is probably that it didn't ask me for root privileges. When I installed it on the console with sudo dpkg -i deb, everythings worked fine. [Bug 231484] Re: Xorg segfaults in XkbHandleBell() if pressing Del key
Good news. I finally had time to figure out how to compile xorg myself. By checking the variable as described in the patch above, the crashes went away. if (!kbd) { xf86MsgVerb(X_WARNING, 0, XkbHandleBell: Warning: kbd was NULL\n); return; } if (!kbd-key) { xf86MsgVerb(X_WARNING, 0, XkbHandleBell: Warning: kbd-key was NULL\n); return; } For every * pressing of the 'Del' key without a char to delete after the cursor * or pressing the 'backspace' key without a char to delete before the cursor, the second message is added. Of course I dont know if this silently corrupts the memory somewhere else. ** Attachment added: Xorg.log from modified xorg server http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20707311/Xorg.1.log -- Xorg segfaults in XkbHandleBell() if pressing Del key https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231484 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 223421] Re: Computer hangs after switch user or lock screen
This happens extremely frequently. The screensaver is set to Skyrocket but I don't think that is the reason. Atleast once a day when I try to unlock the screen the machine hangs. The mouse I guess works because sometimes I have seen the cursor and it moves with the mouse. But nothing on the keyboard works. Only a hard reboot brings things back to normal. Please help. Let me know of any additional test I should do etc. This has to be fixed at all costs. ** Changed in: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- Computer hangs after switch user or lock screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223421 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
