[Bug 311005] Re: package samba 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 102

2008-12-24 Thread Thierry Carrez
Here is the relevant error snippet:

update-rc.d: warning: /etc/rc2.d/K09samba is not a link to ../init.d/samba or
/etc/init.d/samba
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/rc3.d/K09samba is not a link to ../init.d/samba or
/etc/init.d/samba
invoke-rc.d: dangling symlink: /etc/rc2.d/K09samba
dpkg: error processing samba (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 102

Apparently something/someone created /etc/rc2.d/K09samba and
/etc/rc3.d/K09samba on your system and that makes samba installation
fail.

In a terminal, try the following:
$ sudo apt-get purge samba
$ sudo rm /etc/rc2.d/K09samba /etc/rc3.d/K09samba
$ sudo apt-get install samba

Well, I give up. Apparently no one on the Ubuntu team views an upgrade
process which scrambles users' computers to be a serious problem so I
scrubbed the machine and did a fresh installation. Don't bother to post
the normal are you still having the problem you reported six months

[Bug 311116] [NEW] programs cause gdm to crash

2008-12-24 Thread snares
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope yesterday. Haven't had a ton of
time to use it but I did come across a bug. I can't use various
programs. I first noticed it when I went to open Biniax-2. It is like I
hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the xserver. but it does it by
itself. first thought it could be the fglrx driver. I saw that the new
XOrg could cause problems so I switched to the ati opensource driver. No
dice. This also happens with Wine. When I open WineCFG it too causes the
system to crash and return to the login screen. Something that may be
connected is I am having trouble with the gnome-settings-daemon. When I
go to System Preferences Appearance and a message saying:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take
effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings
manager.

I peered into my logs. I put the sections from 5 minutes before crash to
5 minutes after. Best I could anyway. Figured if you need more info from
a particular you could ask. I am using Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 64bit
Kernel-2.6.28-3-generic. gnome-settings-daemon 2.25.2ubuntu3 not sure
what other packages could effect this but if there is just ask.

Re: [Bug 242281] Re: Webpage bounces after FF window is resized in Ubuntu Hardy Heron

2008-12-24 Thread PacoGuy
I actually gave up on ubuntu a while ago, had nothing to do with the
community or the strength of the distro but I just wanted different things
that Ubuntu couldn't offer in its current form. I greatly appreciate the
follow up and wanted to let you know that I am not using the current release
even though I downloaded Ibex on the day it came out (mainly as a show of
solidarity to the linux community).

Keep up the great work and Linux for Life.

Thanks

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

The webpage being viewed bounces up and down after a resize of the Firefox
Window. Seems to happen regardless of the website being viewed.

The page bounces up and down as if I am hitting the up and down arrows
 simultaneously.

This only occurs if the page is resized to anything smaller than a little
more than half the size of my monitor.

Firefox 3 installed on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04. Version:
 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

Package was installed with the Synaptic Package Manager after the official

Apparently something/someone created /etc/rc2.d/K09samba and
/etc/rc3.d/K09samba on your system and that makes samba installation
fail.

In a terminal, try the following:

[Bug 286828] Re: Access to samba 3.0.24-3.0.25 shares using CIFS is broken on 8.10

2008-12-24 Thread Thierry Carrez
Jim/Tom:
As Steve said, this is very likely to be a separate issue (my guess would be
the network-manager changes in 8.10 that expose wireless connections very late
in the boot/login process), could one of you please file a separate bug ? I
don't want to delay publication of this fix because of disconnected problems.

As far as this bug is concerned, if booting 2.6.27-11 and (manually)
mounting the CIFS share with nodfs allows the mount to succeed, then
it's ok. So far vide, mipper and Tom confirmed that fix...

[Bug 310854] Re: Printing Photos with Canon original drivers stopped working in Intrepid

2008-12-24 Thread djtm
Hi Calbocano,

thanks for the hint! I tried to print with Picasa, but that didn't work either,
probably another issue, though.
I luckily remembered, that my printer has a slot for SD-cards (And then it
turned out my print head was blocked, so I had to clean it first...) and I
could print my images directly from there after preparing them on my pc - with
remarkable quality. Now the Christmas present is done :)

2008-12-24 Thread WarrenTurkal
With regard to #1, I am interested in the results.

However, this does look like a kernel issue. I did a little Internet
research and I couldn't find any evidence of others having this issue.
I understand that you are using the alpha of Jaunty, but I was
wondering if you had heard of anyone else having this issue.

I doubt that it's likely to be a firmware issue. I just thought that
might have a chance of making the problem go away for you. :)

BTW, thanks for taking the time to report the bug.

Given that the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel/initrd (and all prior kernels, I've

Re: [Bug 306168] Re: Unable to connect network drive SAMBA Share

2008-12-24 Thread Louis-Xavier Brusset
Hello,
Usually I use only Nautilus to connect to my NAS.
I did not try anything by command-line.
The symptoms are simple to explain :
I explore my smb shares with nautilus, open the icon of my NAS, select one
of the shares I created in my Freecom Web-based interface and after some
times Nautilus returns to my home directory.
I shouldn't be able to make experiments before 29th of december, as I am not
home. So if you have any idea to give me before I will register it and try
it ASAP.

Many Thanks,
LBT

Once winbind is removed you should not get the idmap errors in your logs
anymore. Those were related to a half-configured winbind server on your
Ubuntu client. However your problem is not solved yet, we just removed
 noise.

What command or action are you doing to access your Samba share ? Are
 you using nautilus ? Using a cifs/smbfs mount command or /etc/fstab ?
Using smbclient ? How does it crash ? Any error ?

[Bug 303068] Re: Static IP ethernet network setting is lost after reboot

2008-12-24 Thread Rob Glenn
After reboot, it seems to pop back to using Auto eth0 and the default
settings (dynamic IP, automatic MTU, etc.) no matter what I've tried. I
added another connection (manual eth0) and set it to connect
automatically (and unchecked connect automatically in Auto eth0),
yet when I rebooted the machine it still came up on Auto eth0 with the
dynamic IP. I can manually reselect manual eth0 and then it's OK, but
that's not really acceptable, it needs to come up right after boot
without extra user interaction. Furthermore, the automatic MTU it comes
up with is wrong! The value I see is 576, instead of 1500, which causes
the vpnc program to fail. This happened on two completely different
pieces of hardware. Completely deleting the Auto eth0 connection also
did not fix the problem, it just pops pack after reboot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

is similar to twitter and it appears to me as though it might have
affected the profile pics, or removed them. I must admit I don't use
facebook that much, but I set a new avatar/profile pic on home logged
out. Shutdown and re-opened firefox and it was still there.

I went to another machine and updated from firefox 3.0.3 up to 3.0.5 and
logged in to face book and the avatar/profile pic remained. I believe if
this were a true bug that it would have not rendered the avatar/profile
 pic once again.

[Bug 302392] Re: Mouse buttons and wheel not responding

2008-12-24 Thread David Klasinc
That was my first guess too. That it has to do something with Xorg or at
least nvidia drivers. I never tried single screen setup, so I can't
really tell for sure.

About running xmoto. When my mouse button freeze, I switch to gnome-
terminal, if it's not already open use ALT-F2. Then run xmoto. Put it to
full screen ALT-ENTER, mouse cursor will be locked in-game. Press on the
up/down arrows few times, then put the game back in windowed mode, ALT-
ENTER again. Now, move the mouse cursor (wich shouldn't be grabbed by
xmoto) and move it right on top of the mouse cursor in xmoto which is a
large grey arrow in the top left corner of game window. By some magic,
both mouse cursors will 'merge' and you'll see only the xmoto cursor
which will be working inside the xmoto window. It this doesn't help, put
xmoto back in full screen and back again in windowed mode.

Yeah, it sounds like voodoo, but this actually works for me.

[Bug 311126] [NEW] Please merge midori 0.1.1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-12-24 Thread Alessio Treglia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: midori

Please merge midori 0.1.1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Changelog since current jaunty version 0.1.0-1ubuntu1:

midori (0.1.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release. From upstream's blog post:

* Integration of history completion in the location entry.
* libSoup is used in place of GIO for loading icons, viewing
sources, saving files, and for the first time icons are actually
  cached on disk.
* The side panel gained a compact mode to take up considerably
less space. Bookmarks in the toolbar finally match the menu and
  the panel at any time.
* The Web Inspector [in] WebKitGtk is now supported.
* The beginning of unit testing.
* The ground work for an extension interface has been done,
extension modules can be written in C at the moment. Bindings to
Lua and/ or Python are planned for the future. Note that the
side panel doesn't currently expose the extension management,
but the Page holder was actually rewritten as one of the example
  extensions.

  * Change build dependency to libsoup (from gvfs and gtksourceview).
  * Rewrite manpage and package description.

[Bug 282439] Re: Resizing text in Firefox takes 25+ seconds to take effect

2008-12-24 Thread Michal Skrzypek
I've installed Swiftweasel into Intrepid using the Hoary deb file from
sourceforge, and I have compared Firefox 3.0.5 with Swiftweasel 3.0.3
side-by-side. I haven't noticed any difference wrt zooming.

I can also confirm, that uninstalling font packages helps with the
zooming performance. There are still a lot of fonts, though. Not knowing
what these are for, I'd rather wait for this bug to resolve.

RE: [Bug 252094] Re: [i965] Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-24 Thread bingo

I have tested my system with Jaunty alpha-2 and the results are not very
encouraging. The performance indication provided by glxgears dropped even
further and is now in the 200 fps range, about half of what it was with ubuntu
8.10 final and way below what it was with ubuntu 7.04.

For the sake of clarity, I am using an Intel DG965WH board with the G965
chipset, which includes the X3000 graphics subsystem. Refering back to my
initial bug report, I did run tests with FlightGear 1.9 under Windows recently.
It can achieve frame rates around 25-30 fps. This indicates to me that the
hardware setup in general is quite capable of executing the task at hand.I am
not very familiar with your terminology of moving a bug upstream, please let
me know in more detail what action you expect me to take. Thanks.

[Bug 272205] Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27, Toshiba ATI IXP SB4x0

2008-12-24 Thread Andy Whitcroft
@Vinicius Massuchetto -- have you tried all of the model quirks
available for your codec? You can find out which codec you have with
aplay -l. For example mine looks like this:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So I have a STAC92xx codec. Looking in Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-
Configuration.txt there is a list of possible model quirks and which
laptops they are meant for. It is recommended you try each and see if
any help (remembering to reboot after changing).

[Bug 311089] Re: Firefox for Ubuntu Canonical does not display images at some pages

2008-12-24 Thread Ruben Verweij
Thanks for taking the time to report this. However, I think this isn't really a
bug, it's rather a question.
The site uses flash, it's possible you don't have flash installed yet. To
install flash:
Go to Applications-Add/Remove... and search for flash.
You can either install the Macromedia Flash Plugin or Ubuntu restricted
extras(this gives support for mp3, avi, mpeg, truetype, java and flash)
I hope this has solved your problem!

[Bug 311136] [NEW] Installation of a manually downloaded .deb package in Kubuntu fails without notification

2008-12-24 Thread luba
Public bug reported:

Hello!

I use Kubuntu 8.04 with all updates installed which offered by default and some
additional programs from the repositories. Yesterday I wanted to install the
current version of the Adobe Reader. However, I couldn't find adobe reader or
acroread in the four official package sources. So I downloaded the .deb
package from the Adobe website. In the default file manager (Dolphin? I would
have to reboot to find that out) I clicked on the deb file. A program came up
(IIRC not Adept) which offered me the option to install it. But it seems it
wasn't installed altough I clicked on the corresponding button and it seems
like it did something. The reason that I didn't work is probably that it didn't
ask me for root privileges.
When I installed it on the console with sudo dpkg -i deb, everythings
worked fine. But I think it's more user friendly if that also works on the GUI.

Merry christmas!

[Bug 304554] Re: default mail client starts when power is plugged in

2008-12-24 Thread Pelládi Gábor
I confirm this on an Asus EEE 901. I never saw or modified my keyboard
shortcuts. This issue must be caused by an update, because it started
several weeks ago. I can remember that i plugged in the power many times
on Intrepid after it's release, but it did not start evolution. But now
it does every time. Using the stock kernel. The only out-of-repo
component is the ralink wifi driver.

[Bug 153185] Re: lcdproc needs patch for the imon lcd

2008-12-24 Thread Sebastien Vajda
I've got an Antect Fusion Remote that has the iMon LCD with USB id 15c2:0038.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 64bits.

The latest Ubuntu lcdproc package 0.5.2-0ubuntu2 does not support this
device and I still need to remove the ubuntu lcdproc and build it from
source + the above mentionned patch.

Could you please include this patch at leat for Jaunty and possibly make
available the new package 0.5.2-ubuntu3 (I guess) as backport to
Intrepid ?

[Bug 231484] Re: Xorg segfaults in XkbHandleBell() if pressing Del key

2008-12-24 Thread TTL
Good news. I finally had time to figure out how to compile xorg myself.
By checking the variable as described in the patch above, the crashes
went away.

if (!kbd) {
xf86MsgVerb(X_WARNING, 0, XkbHandleBell: Warning: kbd was NULL\n);
return;
}
if (!kbd-key) {
xf86MsgVerb(X_WARNING, 0, XkbHandleBell: Warning: kbd-key was NULL\n);
return;
}

For every
* pressing of the 'Del' key without a char to delete after the cursor
* or pressing the 'backspace' key without a char to delete before the cursor,
the second message is added.

Of course I dont know if this silently corrupts the memory somewhere
else.

[Bug 223421] Re: Computer hangs after switch user or lock screen

2008-12-24 Thread Ram Gole
This happens extremely frequently. The screensaver is set to Skyrocket
but I don't think that is the reason. Atleast once a day when I try to
unlock the screen the machine hangs. The mouse I guess works because
sometimes I have seen the cursor and it moves with the mouse. But
nothing on the keyboard works. Only a hard reboot brings things back to
normal.

Please help. Let me know of any additional test I should do etc. This
has to be fixed at all costs.
