Please also include the output of:

maybe its just the error message that is misleading?

be reset to point to python2.5

[Bug 452175] Re: Random segfaults when using ld.so explicitly to start a program

2009-11-12 Thread Sven Herzberg
I have a laptop with Fedora 12. On that machine, I have a debian-lenny
chroot.

Within the chroot, I can reproduce the same behavior.

Outside of it, I can't (because which is a binary here).

# uname -a
Linux boober.fraggle 2.6.31.5-115.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Nov 4 00:27:30 EST
2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

So it might be worth to check upstream kernels first.

[Bug 481429] [NEW] Unfair behavior to the primary clipboard with browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll = true

2009-11-12 Thread Pierre Chef
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

The primary clipboard is the highlight-then-middle-click one.

How to reproduce:
In about:config, set browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll to true
Open google.com in three tabs.
In the second tab, click on the url bar, the adress is selected.
Go in the first tab, select some letters to have them in the primary clipboard.
Press Ctrl+Tab 2 times to go to the third tab OR go with the mouse to tab 2
then tab 3.
Press middle-click in the search box.
What you expected to happen: The selected words from first tab get pasted
What happened: The google adress get pasted, put in the primary clipboard when
you went through the second tab.

(It also works by selecting the search bar instead of the adress bar,
but you have to restart firefox after having changed
browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll.)

It's a misbehavior because there was no user interaction in the second
tab when going by, the last selection made by the user was in the first
tab.

[Bug 481427] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center is Crashing without a Crash Notification Afterwards

2009-11-12 Thread Lonnie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Other crashes that have been reported don't seem to fit my experience.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 32bit on a Compaq Presario 6000.

After clicking Ubuntu Software Center from the Applications menu,
software center comes up, but before it can completely propagate its
Software Category Icons, it crashes without notification.

Also, after this happened, I expected to see a crash notification from
an applet next to the clock on the GNOME panel. However, there was no

[Bug 477513] Re: FireFox crashes routinely karmic i386

2009-11-12 Thread Micah Gersten
The Mozilla Guys always say to try their build if they have no
information so they can make sure it's a problem with Firefox and not
our libraries.

Here, this command should work:
sudo force_start=1 service apport start

Please try that and reproduce the crash with our firefox.

I'll have to update the documentation for that command and I apologize
for all the trouble.

[Bug 481434] [NEW] Activitiy indicator placed on bookmark bar only works for current tab.

2009-11-12 Thread Jerry Durand
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

When more than one tab is open and I've placed the activity indicator on
the bookmark bar, it only spins if the current tab is busy.

This is not a severe problem, it's more confusing. If the tab bar is
visible, of course all the activity indicators are visible. I have it
on the bookmark bar since I often only have one tab open and have the
tab bar set to hide.

[Bug 481367] Re: Pulseaudio Connection Refused for chipset intel 82801G

2009-11-12 Thread thewonderer57
Hi Daniel, thanks for replying.
OK, see above:

Note, I have tried also:
 sudo pulseaudio --system

So I have tried running in user mode (open terminal: pulseaudio -D) to
generate the pulse.log I attached.

I have also ran: sudo pulseaudio --system , which generates the same log
files.

Noted: I will remove the /etc/asound.conf file and ~/.asoundrc* as you
recommend.

Any further advise, based on the pulse.log, greatly appreciated.

2009-11-12 Thread Martin Wildam
Holy sh** - I discovered (re-reading some of the earlier comments and
then doing an lsusb) that my E160G shows up as E220/E270 on the lsusb
command. - So what is more correct - what is written on the stick or
what lsusb shows?

I have tried some of the tips in other bugs but can't seem to get to

What tools do I need to install to even see the card to test and set it up?

none of the defalut install tools see it.

divice manager only sees that it is pressent but gives no data about

Prior to the upgrade it worked fine.

Doh, seems to be a duplicate of bug #327499 which seems to have been
caused by a change in ACPI initialization.

ACPI: Attach the ACPI device to the ACPI handle as early as possible

This got reverted in 2.6.31.6. I will mark this report as duplicate of
the other bug.

Thank you taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
However, processing the crash report to get detailed information for the
developers failed as the retracer did not generate a useful symbolic stack
trace.
Please try to obtain a backtrace manually following the instructions at

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched Rattling like Sound with 5.1 Surround Configuration on Karmic Koala

2009-11-12 Thread Fabio Albieri
I tried

deleting /home/.../.pulse folder
killall pulseaudio PULSE_NO_SIMD=1 pulseaudio

and it seems to work fine.
Reading around seems a problem have been spotted in the mmx optimized volume
code, isn't it ?

So next question now:
how do I spawn PULSE_NO_SIMD=1 pulseaudio automatically at boot, till a proper
fix comes out ?

[Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2009-11-12 Thread Julian J. M.
I've also tried acpi=off and it fixes the freezing problem... But just
because, at least on my system, it disables 3D acceleration completely.

I don't use desktop effects for testing, but Google Earth. If 3D is
enabled, I load Google Earth and X freezes in the first minute. With
acpi=off kernel parameter, GE tells me that it's using software
renderer, thus no freeze, although it's painfully slow ;)

There is nothing relevant in dmesg or the X log when it freezes... Is
there anything we can do to help developers track this issue?

Thanks for your bugreport.

The following error looks like there might be a filesystem issue with your

Could you please run a filesystem check and see if that finds any issues?

[Bug 364001] Re: New icons on desktop are placed on top of existing ones

2009-11-12 Thread Shahar Or
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 40872 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40872

Dear Chris,

I disagree.

The issue of users being able to overlap their icons horribly is one,
and the fact that desktop icons are _created_ by default on top of
existing ones is another. To make this clear, try:

'cd ~/Desktop touch One touch Two touch Three'

And now see that they are all on top of one another.

Separating these issues is for good order, and then one could be
addressed before the other.

The problem may be reproduced, since it may have occurred after I
followed instructions in Norman Chan's Maximum PC blog about 20
essential tweaks to improve Firefox performance and fiddled around with
about:config.
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/20_essential_tweaks_every_firefox_user_should_know
I was thinking of restoring the original configurations. There is a
restore function on the bold-faced lines. Should I do it?
All the best.

[Bug 479375] Re: Audio stutters and glitches (Karmic, Intel HDA ICH8)

2009-11-12 Thread Alexander Bethke
Uff, wow, that was harder than necessary, trying to add an apport report to
this bug. apport-collect didn't do more than the above comment and then
aborted. And I first had to find out that I have to update apport from
ubuntu-updates to fix a bug with the apport-cli offline mode in Jaunty.
But here finally the report from running the Ubuntu 9.04 32bit desktop live-cd.
The sound works out of the box without glitches. So perhaps we can find some
pointers from the difference of how the card is recognized / set up in Jaunty
as compared to Karmic.

In hope things can advance a bit now...
Regards, Alex

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
scroll to the bottom and add this line.

save and exit

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install samba libsmbclient

then you probably want to remove that line again afterwards as some of
the updates have the possibility to break your system in that repo.

I removed the acl manually from the two files that had it (sorry, i

[Bug 481440] [NEW] svn status -u not working anymore since upgrade to karmic

2009-11-12 Thread Henning Sprang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: subversion

Upgraded from Jaunty to karmic last week, and using subversion now for
the first time since that upgrade.

It seems in some strange way the subversion client is now bound to gnome
functionality for authenticating against servers and does use the
authentication tokens alsready stored in my subversion config directory
anymore, instead asking for some gnome apps keyring password, which I
seem not to know.

It looks like this:

usern...@myhost:/path/to/workdir$ svn status -u
Password for 'apps' GNOME keyring:
svn: OPTIONS of 'https://svn.project.org/svn/path/to/repository': authorization
failed: Could not authenticate to server: rejected Basic challenge
(https://svn.project.org)

The client worked perfectly and for many months before this happened.

While it might be not a too bad idea to use gnome keyring in general, I
see it as a failure that svn does not revert to the usual
authentication methods if that fails. That's not O.K., and I'm really in
trouble now!

For starters, please revert your change to /etc/default/pulseaudio --
you do *not* want PulseAudio started as a system-wide daemon before
you login as a user, because your user will not be able to connect[0]!

[Bug 435352] Re: regression: uvcvideo module makes cannot reset port error on usb with bison webcam (5986:0203): USB and suspend fails

2009-11-12 Thread vonskie
I can imagine the meeting...

Hello everyone...

Today we are going to talk about XYZ...

People are staring at the screen, one guy ask what are you running?

You proudly respond, Ubuntu 9.10 just installed it last night and no
problems, did I mention it is free...

Then some guy says oh is that why the screen is blinking and the
brightness is changing, as you look toward the overhead the room starts
to fill with laughter and hateful comments... You get what you pay for!,
You could have got a Dell man!, Windows 7 works better than this and so
does Vista!, Apple Rules! Linux is for poor hackers who like to spend
their days messing with their broke computer rather than working!

You stand there with your mouth open and utter, I know how to work
around this and then when you insert the thumb drive it will not
mount... You then bury your head into your hands, pat the sweat off of
your forehead with a folded napking, adjust your tie swallow hard and
ask for a computer that is working...

The room then erupts with laughter and the rest of the meeting is filed
with people cracking Linux jokes... Because of this you are off balance
and give the worst presntation of your life...

You are demoted, thrown to the street and in a deep dark corner of an
alley you have your netbook plugged into an extension cord for christmas
lights... You get an email for a job recurter and you respond with your
resume you typed in Open Office that the recurtire can not read with MS
Word so you are passed up for the job..

You send the rest of your days eating out of trash cans, telling
homeless people about Ubuntu 9.10 and how it ruined you.

Joking...

I have an MSI Wind and have experienced several issues too...

2009-11-12 Thread Shahar Or
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 40872 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40872

** Description changed:

  Dear friends,

When new icons are created on the desktop, for plugged in devices and
ones that are created by programs like Firefox downloading a file and so
on, these icons are put all in the same position, on top of each other.
+
+ For example, try the command 'cd ~/Desktop touch One touch Two
+ touch Three' And see that they're one of top of the other.

I think that any means of placing new icons on the desktop will be
better than the way its currently done.

  Many blessings.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap horribly

2009-11-12 Thread Shahar Or
In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/364001
I've reported that desktop icons are placed by _default_ on top of one another.
I claim that this is one bug, and the fact that users are allowed to overlap
their icons is a separate one.

That bug has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. I disagree. I think
that if merely that bug I filed is fixed, hence new icons would be
created (if possible) in a clear space, most of the overlap problem
would be solved.

[Bug 481357] Re: Nautilus CRASH while performing operations via FTP (copy/paste, file properties)

2009-11-12 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
