[Bug 541609] Re: When running on a battery in lucid there is no tooltip popup on mouseover

2010-03-18 Thread Paul Sladen
It is indeed a regression; and it isn't just on-battery. If there is
external power available and the battery is charging, there is no longer
easy mouseover information about how long it will take to complete
charging. This information does not appear to be available, regardless
of the numbers of clicks or diversionary context changes undertaken.

[Bug 541551] Re: Splash screen displayed too late / too short

2010-03-18 Thread Steve Langasek
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 540801 ***

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.

Effectively, this is bug #540801. Although you happen to see the splash
screen briefly, where the submitter of that bug doesn't see it at all,
the long delay without a splash screen has the same basic cause.

[Bug 378334] Re: gnome-volume-control: USB headset volume buttons affect laptop speakers, not headset speakers

2010-03-18 Thread James Henstridge
Hi Stephen,

if your Plantronics headset is anything like my Logitech one, it
presents itself to the system as both a sound device and a keyboard
device. When I press the volume buttons on the headset, it generates
volume up/down keyboard events.

Probably the easiest way to test this is to pick System - Preferences
- Keyboard Shortcuts, click on one of the actions and then press the
volume up or down buttons on the headset. If that registers as
XF86AudioLowerVolume/RaiseVolume, then your headset is probably like
mine.

In that case, the underlying problem is that the volume up/down keypresses from
the real keyboard are not being distinguished from those of the headset.
Fixing this would require:
 1. detecting which keyboard the volume up/down keypress came from.
 2. associating keyboards with pulseaudio devices
 3. update the correct mixer.

2010-03-18 Thread Daniel Hahler
I'm closing this as invalid:
apt-get remove does not remove any configuration files (below /etc).
You need to purge the package to do so, e.g. apt-get purge php5-xdebug, or
when removed already: dpkg -P php5-xdebug.

So I have no idea what's going on, I suppose I'll just upgrade and recompile
the kernel. I still think it's some instability problem in ath5k, there is
probably a missing sanity check elsewhere in the code during wireless access
point communication / reassociation. Either that or the kernel panic has
something to do with graphics (it was stable until I came back and started
surfing the internet and moving the mouse). Thanks Luis I'll probably upgrade
the kernel, but Ubuntu 9.10 was the latest release so I blame them ! hah

I will post here if I solve the stability issue. The patch to ath5k has
helped but not solved the problem. Now its stable for 96hours instead of
24 hours.

[Bug 540175] Re: sun-java6

2010-03-18 Thread Airton Torres
I want to second this request for keeping Sun-Java in the list of supported
packages.
Besides being Brazilian and subject to the issues already posted by my fellow
countrymen here, as a developer I, as well as a the large majority of
developers around the world, take advantage of development IDEs to get our work
done in an easier and more integrated manner. In my case, I use Eclipse, which
is a java application. Although it works to some extent with OpenJDK, not all
of it's features work correctly without Oracle's JVM, and it's really slow
under OpenJDK. This is true for other IDEs too, as well as many other java apps
available out there.
I'm aware that we can always get sun-java from other sources, but it would make
it a lot more difficult for the not so tech-savvy users to accomplish. Further,
the upgrade/update process to newer versions/releases of the package would be a
lot more difficult to be done, forcing many of those users to rely upon an
outdated and less secure version/release.
So, please, let it stay in the list of supported packages or at least, as jmhal
pointed out, give Ubuntu users an easy way to install and upgrade/update it
from other sources, whatever they might be.

[Bug 541652] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 - keyboard and mouse lock up

2010-03-18 Thread Alexander Obersht
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

Karmic Koala, 32-bit version on a Toshiba Satellite P105 laptop. After
upgrading to 2.6.31-20.58-generic kernel, system randomly stops
responding to all local input (keyboard, touchpad, USB mouse). To a
local user this might look like a complete system lockup. In reality,
however, the affected system is still operational and, for example,
accepts input via ssh.

This didn't happen with earlier kernels (reverting back to
2.6.31-19.56-generic is the workaround that I used).

[Bug 379780] Re: CD-ROM polling on some Optiarc drives causes high CPU usage

2010-03-18 Thread Mark Fernandes
This bug is really bugging me, because despite being upto date with
everything released so far, it wont go away for me. :)

I have tried everything recommended on this thread, but the load does
not come down as much as if I were to shutdown udev completely. I
include a snapshot of all running process, with intermittent udev
restarts, to show that the problem does not go away on my machine.

As you observe in the attached file, the load drops significantly
as soon as I stop udev, but restarting it at various late intervals
does not change the load much.

Interestingly, powertop reports this suggestion for udevd.

The program 'udevd' is writing to file 'block:sr0' on /dev/devtmpfs.
This prevents the disk from going to powersave mode.

[Bug 541655] [NEW] Please sync lucene2 2.9.2+ds1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2010-03-18 Thread Benjamin Drung
Public bug reported:

Please sync lucene2 2.9.2+ds1-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).
It will fix the FTBFS (bug #521204). No FFe for the new upstream release
is required, because 2.9.2 is only a bug fix release. lucene2 is
required to build eclipse 3.5.2-1.

Changes since lucid version 2.9.1+ds1-5:

  * New upstream release
  * Add patch to fix Java networking during package build (workaround for

[Bug 535108] Re: Hide console messages while Plymouth is running

2010-03-18 Thread Scott James Remnant
You can enable this without installing cryptsetup by:

  echo FRAMEBUFFER=y /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
  update-initramfs -u

The longer-term plan I think, if it works, is to try and early-load udev
and the graphics drivers if we can get away with it - so there isn't the
black screen gap

[Bug 540801] Re: X server starts before Plymouth, or a very short time after (no or brief splash)

[Bug 539878] Re: nouveau out of sync LVDS (basically card not supported)

2010-03-18 Thread Scott James Remnant
Hi Verstaete, we're a little behind on this stuff - our kernels don't
have mmiotrace in Beta 1 but will do before Lucid releases. Your best
bet for now is to boot with nomodeset (you can access this by pressing
a key at the initial logo when the Live CD boots, then F6 for options)
- and then once installed install the nvidia-glx binary driver from the
hardware drivers menu

(You'll need that install to provide the relevant debugging info later)

[Bug 485404] Re: NM is not aware of Wi-Fi ( ipw2x00 ) power state

2010-03-18 Thread David Tombs
Trying the current PPA version in karmic made me unable to connect to my
home WLAN (endless spinning circle), but it did quit trying when I
turned off the radio hw switch. Sounds like it's fixed but... package
downgrade time. :-S

I see the commit should be in the Lucid version, though, so I'll test
when Bug #515246 is fixed.

[Bug 541468] Re: euca-describe-images img lists all images when querying against ec2

2010-03-18 Thread Neil Soman
Yeah, looks like I can get boto to return the correct image is by
setting owners and executable_by to None. If executable_by is set to
['self'], nothing is returned, which does not make a lot of sense.

Good luck getting to the bottom of this. Frankly, this is beyond the
scope of euca2ools functionality, since it clearly works as expected
with Eucalyptus and I can't devote any more time to this.

RE: [Bug 537793] Re: missed passphrase keypress bug is back on MSI Wind U100

keypress bug with the new plymouth, smoothly took every character. I
will let you know if the problem resurfaces, but the odds that this
boot would have been this clean with the last version would have been
 less than 1 in 10.

This would make sense to me.

Since you're using encrypted filesystems, you must have cryptsetup
installed, so Plymouth is starting from the initramfs. Plymouth will
set its TTY up to be in raw mode, and make it the active VT on the
console.

Upstart starts later, to bring up the full system; and some code existed
in there (the last thing done only because sysvinit did) to reset the
console with sane settings. This put the console back into cooked
mode, ie. Plymouth's active VT.

Since Plymouth is now receiving cooked key codes not raw key codes, it's
not what it expects; and thus we have the bug where keypresses are
missed or mis-interpreted.

Later on, this same problem would cause X to crash on the Enter key. So
it should be fixed as a result of that fix, we not only fixed bits in
Plymouth but dropped that code from Upstart too. I'll mark it fixed
now, but please do reopen if you have the issue again, and we'll walk
through the code and see what else is going screwy.

 edonia, thank you.
Command mount --bind /dev/bus /proc/bus eliminate all directories in
/proc/bus. And it doesn't help with VirtualBox. But thank you anyway.

You can get around this too ;-)

  mkdir /dev/bus/input /dev/bus/pccard /dev/bus/pci
(basically anything you see under /proc/bus)

  mount --bind /proc/bus/input /dev/bus/input
  mount --bind /proc/bus/pccard /dev/bus/pccard
  mount --bind /proc/bus/pci /dev/bus/pci

  mount --bind /dev/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb

  ln -s /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices /proc/bus/usb/devices

It would really be better if your software just used the updated
paths ;-) Since no new version of any distribution provides the old
interface anymore!

Just to confirm previous versions of Ubuntu worked, I did install 9.10
and it boots with no problems. I proceed to 'update-manager -d' to
lucid, but again on reboot I cannot get past this error.

[Bug 438318] Re: [karmic] no sound on toshiba nb205

2010-03-18 Thread Sean Fidler
This is working for me now too with the above fix on kernel 2.6.32-16.
It appears to have also corrected the wonky volume settings for
headphone output as well which is a nice perk. I used to only get
reasonable volume levels at about 7% output but not the volume slider
has a much more useful range.

Thanks!

[Bug 375132] Re: CPU fan doesn't get triggered even at high temps

2010-03-18 Thread Luis Rugamas Garzona
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 370173 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370173

Hola Diego y Gonzalo.

/usr/src/modules/omnibook/init.c: In function ‘omnibook_init’:
/usr/src/modules/omnibook/init.c:294: error: ‘struct proc_dir_entry’ has no
member named ‘owner’
make[4]: *** [/usr/src/modules/omnibook/init.o] Error 1

make[1]: *** [binary-modules] Error 2
make[1]: se sale del directorio `/usr/src/modules/omnibook’
make: *** [kdist_build] Error 2

la solucion lo explican en el siguiente enlace:
http://lamaquinadiferencial.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/no-funciona-el-bluetooth-en-toshiba-satellite-en-debianubuntu/

http://www.filewatcher.com/m/omnibook-20080627-2.1.src.rpm.69412.0.0.html

y una vez instalado el contrador Omnibook se le pasan ciertos parametros
para solucionar el problema del FAN y hacer funcionar el Bluetooth dejo el
enlace de los parametros y espero que les sirva para que puedan tener su
maquina al 100.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread scholli
@ Atel Apsfej:

Wow. I am baffled about your ability to write and think. Here are writing many
genius, but not all here have your ability to say it clear, with good arguments
(points) and the cruel reality without being offensive, arrogant or simply
unrespectful. I saw you are member here since February here and I don't know
how much time you're familiar with Ubuntu and how much is your knowledge about
Canonical's politic. I am with you with the most things you said, but
nevertheless we are talking only about some simple control-buttons moved from
the right to the left. I am really shocked about, how polemic that gewgaw is
handled by the community. To be honest, and now I come to that what you wrote,
is your wish about the transparency between Canonical and the community:
I think there are some important cases where a work-together and transparency
would be really nice. But do you really think that this - buttons - are a
essential and important element which has to be supervised by the community? We
have to spend all our spare time and energy for this thematic? This peanut can
be managed easily by the design team. We should give really only datas, no
emotions and without creating a religion from it. The desing team collects
datas meanwhile we spend our energy in truth important stuffs. For that I am
agree with #234 (Bruno) Point 2.
