[Bug 1300768] Re: Rsync fails with (very) old server.
Yes, the git HEAD also has the problem. You are right. upstream bug / by design. I'd think the first, because the commit comment doesn't say break compatibility with V21 protocol. For me personally I need to be able to rsync to/from the ancient machine this week. I just need to remember to do this from the non 14.04 machines that I have. It's inconvenient, since some of the rsyncs that I need go to a partition that isn't mounted on the non-14.04 machines. So it will have to become a two-step procedure. But that's my workaround. I'll manage. I report bugs like this with the intention to help fix it for the future. When I run into a similar situation again in the future, I prefer to have helped get it fixed as opposed to running into the problems again. I'm guessing that some new feature in the protocol was not properly surrounded with if (negotiatedprotocol xxx) .. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to rsync in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1300768 Title: Rsync fails with (very) old server. It does instruct the cloud installation of a server to use a specific ubuntu image from simplestreams and a specific jujud binary (also from simplestreams) on the remote host. I agree with Martin; the fact that these binaries do not originate in the Ubuntu archive, and are not subjected to the normal standards and procedures for the Ubuntu archive, is very concerning. Using simplestreams as the distribution method or not makes no difference to me - but the actual software that's being distributed should be built using Ubuntu best practices. We've been turning a blind eye to this so long as the package has been in universe. I don't think we want juju-core to go into main until jujud is also brought in house in Ubuntu. I'm pretty sure the jujud binaries are being built by the archive. At least, ISTR that we had to wait for some things to get built into Trusty before we could publish them. It may be that we switched to a PPA to increase turn around time, but that isn't as relevant for what we would publish as a stable release. [Bug 1300768] Re: Rsync fails with (very) old server.
Thank you for investigating this. I report bugs like this with the intention to help fix it for the future. When I run into a similar situation again in the future, I prefer to have helped get it fixed as opposed to running into the problems again. Understood, and we appreciate this. Please do continue to report bugs in this fashion. I'm guessing that some new feature in the protocol was not properly surrounded with if (negotiatedprotocol xxx) .. It seems to me that this might be a mistake, and not done on purpose. If you can take this further, perhaps you could check to see if upstream know about this issue already, and if not then raise it in their bug tracker? I'll mark this as Invalid in Ubuntu on the assumption that this is intentional behaviour, but if it turns out that it isn't, and there's a fix, we can always change this. ** Changed in: rsync (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to rsync in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1300768 Title: Rsync fails with (very) old server. [Bug 1267393] Re: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo-go, gccgo-4.9, golang
Not addressing the component / archive / PPA questions, but other things which I think are required. - Upstream gc only works on adding shared library support to their C compiler, afaics there is currently no work done building shared go libs. Adding this seems to be orthogonal, and even if you can't yet do this with gc, then you can start developing this with gcc. Questions to address are what to put into a shared library. Just a single Go package, or a bunch of packages? E.g. libgo.so as built from gccgo uses this approach. My feeling is that with a shared library for each go package we end up with hundreds of new libraries. - Start thinking how to package and build third libraries built by gc and gccgo. Sure Debian already does this, but completely ignores gccgo. - Merge our go tool gcc port upstream. Maybe we need a branch for Go 1.2 based compilers? - Stop bundling every source in juju-core. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to golang in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1267393 Title: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo-go, gccgo-4.9, golang To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gccgo-go/+bug/1267393/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1301481] [NEW] juju-quickstart will be broken in Trusty after juju-core updates in its stable PPA
Public bug reported: juju-core is expected to land a change that will break juju-quickstart. We can fix this in the archive today, but if this happens after Trusty's release, we'll be stuck. This demonstrates a wider problem here, which is that this is a consequence of juju-quickstart installing Juju from its PPA by default. After discussion with the juju-quickstart team, the conclusion is that juju-quickstart as installed from the archive should do --distro-only behaviour by default (ie. not enable any PPAs by default), even if it does make sense for it to use the PPA by default when installed from other sources (eg. PPA and PyPI). Then, juju-quickstart as installed from the archive will only ever use juju-core from the archive. We have agreed that juju-quickstart will have an option that is the opposite of --distro-only (eg. --ppa), which will be the default upstream, but we will distro-patch the default the other way round in the archive to resolve this issue. ** Affects: juju-quickstart (Ubuntu) Importance: High Status: Triaged ** Affects: juju-quickstart (Ubuntu Trusty) Importance: High Status: Triaged ** Also affects: juju-quickstart (Ubuntu Trusty) Importance: High Status: Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to juju-quickstart in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1301481 Title: juju-quickstart will be broken in Trusty after juju-core updates in its stable PPA To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/juju-quickstart/+bug/1301481/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1237364] Re: Commissioning with a Saucy image sets node status to Failed tests
@Paul: the problem you're having is that your nodes can't access the outside world. They are thus unable to fetch the packages needed for commissioning (see http://paste.ubuntu.com/7195406/). Unless you changed the http_proxy config option (on the settings page — or you can configure it using the CLI/API), your nodes are using the region's proxy to download packages. Have a look at the proxy's log to check if you can see something suspicious. Another common problem is when MAAS' DNS server (BIND server installed on the region) is unable to resolve names such as 'ubuntu.com'. If this is the problem then the region's /var/log/syslog file will contain errors like 'error (network unreachable) resolving …'. To solve this: if you're using Trusty's package, just configure the 'upstream_dns' option ('settings' page, at the bottom — or using the API/CLI) with your upstream DNS server address. If you're using another version, you have to do the config manually: include something like http://paste.ubuntu.com/7195395/ in /etc/bind/named.conf.options and restart the maas-dns service. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to maas in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1237364 Title: Commissioning with a Saucy image sets node status to Failed tests To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1237364/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

This is essential work to prevent these teams from blocking on the core MAAS development team, and to make writing new drivers an order of magnitude quicker and easier. [Proposed Changes] The feature is already half implemented; bi-directional comms between clusters and the region controller is now established but further work is required to add an API layer between these comms and the driver code. The API layer will translate the various requirements that a driver should provide into calls to the region, and vice versa. Additionally, all current code that is part of hardware enablement, such as architecture types and power parameter choices, will be moved into new driver code that will become part of each cluster controller. NIC tracking [Description] A feature is already landed to support network tracking on Nodes that MAAS manages. This needs to be extended to track on which NIC the network is available. This is essential otherwise the existing work is of no use to API clients if they cannot know on which NIC the network is to be used. [Proposed changes] The database will gain a link table between MACAddress and Network, and the UI will change so that it lets the user link networks against MACs on the node rather than the node as a whole. API calls will also change accordingly. [Bug 1298921] Re: cloud-init should give up on 404 errors
In one way or another, the CloudStack datasource was explicitly enabled. You or something explicitly configured this datasource on, and to be run before the Ec2 datasource, so generally its functioning as designed. Well it wasn't explicitly disabled :-) Additionally, its not a 404 that we get as the error, but a Connection Refused. Weird. I know I got 404 errors at one point. Need to redo my testing when I'm back in the office. there must be a config file in /etc/cloud/ that enables the CloudStack datasource, and lists it before the ConfigDrive datasource, Yes there is. It seems that the list in Debian is in the wrong order. However, I think the actual ordering should be enforced by cloud-init if it is that crucial and breaks otherwise (as seen in this case). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cloud-init in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1298921 Title: cloud-init should give up on 404 errors To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-init/+bug/1298921/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1267393] Re: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo-go, gccgo-4.9, golang
I partially reviewed juju-core version 1.17.6-0ubuntu1 as checked into trusty. This shouldn't be considered a full security audit; this review is even more cursory than usual, since the MIR has been retracted for trusty. So, here's the notes I've collected thus far in the hopes that they are useful for the next MIR review: - release-public-tools.sh doesn't validate downloaded packages The jujud that is served up through simplestreams or cloud service provider tools buckets is entirely unchecked against accidental or malicious replacement. Please use apt-get download to retrieve packages, it performs all the necessary package hash comparisons and signed package list comparisons that are currently missing in the shell script. - utils/trivial.go ShQuote() is broken The quoting method used is broken -- some clever arrangement of , `, and $() will be able to execute unexpected commands. Part of why the quoting method is broken is because the design of the tool is trying to accomplish too many things at once. ShQuote() is being used both for quoting a single argument and for parsing entire scripts. It cannot be used for both tasks, and in fact trying to quote an entire script is a mistake. It needs to be re-done to focus on a single argument and use the method of quoting outlined by Florian Weimer at http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/02/04/3 The proper way (at least if your shell runs in a UTF-8 or ISO-8859 locale) to escape shell arguments is to wrap them in '', after replacing embedded ' characters with the four character sequence '\''. I'm pretty new to Go, but it feels like there's a nice opportunity to use the type system to create a ShellScript type that can only be constructed from static strings and properly quoted arguments -- and then the various Run commands could be typed to only accept arguments of the ShellScript type, to statically discover when a shell injection site may have been missed. - juju-backup shell script uses incorrect quoting method needlessly Another case of trying to quote an entire shell script; the base64 trick used elsewhere may be a better fit for what is attempted here. - The local environment hardcodes use of 'sudo' to raise privileges Some of the functions will execute 'sudo' if they weren't called with sufficient privileges. I'd rather have operations clearly fail if permissions are insufficient instead of trying to raise privileges behind the scenes. If some installations have configured sudo, these may be unwelcome or raise awkward questions or provide a very unfriendly user experience. Using 'sudo' in the units is fine, juju owns those. But sudo on the local host may be different. Thanks -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to golang in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1267393 Title: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo-go, gccgo-4.9, golang To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gccgo-go/+bug/1267393/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1274247] Re: [MIR] Glusterfs
Another motivation... Samba now supports glusterfs natively through the API. If glusterfs were in main (and glusterfs-common added to samba's build deps) this feature would be enabled. It's already included in samba in trusty, just not enabled during build because the glusterfs lib is missing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1274247 Title: [MIR] Glusterfs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glusterfs/+bug/1274247/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
