The content of that was UTF-8 encoded; the transport message body contained an ASCII-armoured PGP message. Actual results: The Thunderbird user got the message interpreted as ISO-8859-1 or Windows-1252, instead of UTF-8. This was also reported as: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1357227 This means the automatic detection of UTF-8 is broken, and/or the encoding of the RFC822 transport container is mixed up with the encoding of the message. Manually selecting Unicode from the message encoding menu, the message is displayed correctly. Switching away from the message and back to it causes the setting to reset; this was also reported as: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1108980 Expected results: The user should have seen the Unicode characters in the message correctly, instead of mojibake. [Bug 1322211] Re: linux-image-3.13.0-24-generic kernel doesn't boot on Xen 3.0 from CentOS5
Hi, I'm also affected by this issue. I have a number of virtual machines running Precise which are now left in limbo - I cannot use the original Precise kernel (3.2.0) because of some missing features, and I cannot upgrade to the Trusty kernel (or upgrade the entire distribution to Trusty for that matter) due to this issue. I can run the Raring or Saucy kernels, but those are now End of Life, which means I won't get any security fixes. I have no influence over my VPS provider's choice of hypervisor software. [Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1240198 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240198 same here (Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity or GNOME Shell). The whole ibus system is broken and the fix (e.g. #57, #58) basically just switches it off. Here are the problems in detail: ibus does not react, it does not seem to govern the keyboard layout anymore (xkb vs ibus issue?). Some GUI features might make it look like it's working (OSD under Gnome, indicator under Unity), but the effect is not there. Additionally (and possibly unrelated, but occurring wiht the same update), some key combos (namely opening a terminal with alt-ctrl-T) have no longer effect (neither on Gnome nor Unity). The fix just sets the fallback to what you might like to work with, but there is no switching layouts (and/or input methods) anymore. For me the problem became apparent with the update to kernel version 3.13.0-34-generic. No fix so far solves the underlying problem of ibus being broken. This problem concerns the essential keyboard input and should have maximum priority! This goes for this thread as well as the discussed duplicate bug #1240198. It baffles me how a broken keyboard input system can be tagged with low priority. I have updated GNOME to the gnome team version, changed the user id to 1001, tried all kinds of fixes, ibus remains unresponsive. I will now stick with the fallback solution from bug #1240198 without the option to switch layouts (no more Japanese input), until I have time to migrate to Debian. With ibus broken like this we are back to antedeluvian times where Linux could only be used with a US keyboard. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1246272 Title: Keyboard layout changing randomly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1246272/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1357304] [NEW] xemacs installation fails during upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04
Public bug reported: Release was 12.04 LTS, now reports 14.05.1 LTS Using 'automatic' release update through Muon Update Manager Expected clean upgrade, encountered problems with the upgrade of the xemacs21 package. Attempting to upgrade Kubuntu 12.04LTS to Kubuntu 14.04LTS 32-bit virtual machine leads to error installing emacsen-common. The remainder of the Xemacs installation then fails. Requires a forced uninstall of all (x)emacs components after upgrade, followed by re-installation of emacsen-common, followed by installation of the remainder of the xemacs21 package. Has happened on two systems - one using Oracle VirtualBox 4.3.12 on a Windows 7 Home edition 64-bit host, one using VirtualBox 4.3.14 on an Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS 64-bit host. I think the problem may be in the internal dependencies of the xemacs21 package, but I only encountered the issue during the 12.04 - 14.04 upgrade. ** Affects: ubuntu-release-upgrader (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357304 Title: xemacs installation fails during upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1357304/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Note that that SRU team would need to make a final decision. Those steps require a test case, and this is needed before any update to Trusty. Re: [Bug 1314787] Re: Memory leak
No leaks since the kernel upgrade. However, I have stopped latest updates of Network-Manager-Gnome at version 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu4.2 due to the fact that the latest update made the memory leak so bad I could not be up for more than a couple of hours without a reboot. Being that I am unwilling to install the NMG update to see if the new kernel fixes that as well, all I can say is that on my system Xorg is releasing memory now ... even though it still uses a lot... but I have been up for over two days without a reboot and am only using 38% of my memory ... Xorg is still the biggest hog but at least it is now bearable. Note that I am a very heavy user so the system is run hard... so far so good. If you can revert back to NMG 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu4.2, you can prevent an update by both system updates and system upgrades by adding these line to the /etc/apt/preferences file (if it does not exist, create it): Package: network-manager-gnome Pin: version 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu4.2 Pin-Priority: -1 Package: libnm-gtk-common Pin: version 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu4.2 Pin-Priority: -1 Package: libnm-gtk0 Pin: version 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu4.2 Pin-Priority: -1 Use Timeshift https://launchpad.net/%7Eteejee2008/+archive/ubuntu/ppa to back up your setup and try the kernel update. With the above config my system is doing OK now. Good luck! [Bug 889394]
Well as you correctly pointed out, XScreenSaver uses its own DPMS settings and ignores the settings of the Xserver. The power manager instead uses the Xserver's DPMS interface, so the two can never really correspond. So this really isn't a bug in xfce4-power-manager. However, we might in a future version of xfpm include a tab to handle screensavers/lockscreens, where the user can select which software he wants to handle the locking. When XScreenSaver would be selected there, we could make all the DPMS and blanking related controls insensitive so that the settings can only be edited in XScreenSaver's own settings UI. But that's about everything that can be done about this bug imo. Making xfpm override XScreenSaver's settings isn't really possible afaik. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889394 Title: xscreensaver and xfce4-power-manager conflict To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xfce4-power-manager/+bug/889394/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1357345] [NEW] tar: untaring with --recursive-unlink ends with an empty directory
Public bug reported: Using tar version 1.26-4ubuntu1 from Ubuntu 12.04 (I'm submitting this case here, as I can't tell if it's specific to the tar shipped with Ubuntu or a bug with all tar, and this concerns Ubuntu base packages anyway). Using the attached archive file, running this: /bin/tar --extract --auto-compress --exclude-backups --exclude-caches --exclude-vcs --preserve-permissions --recursive-unlink --totals --unlink-first --verbose --file Sphinx.tar.xz; ls Sphinx … I get an empty directory, although the output says it extracted many things. This seems to be related to a buggy `--recursive-unlink` option, as this one works: /bin/tar --extract --auto-compress --exclude-backups --exclude-caches --exclude-vcs --preserve-permissions --totals --unlink-first --verbose --file Sphinx.tar.xz; ls Sphinx … the directory is not empty any‑more. I get this unexpected behaviour with this archive only, not with others. My guess is that it's due to the order in which the entries appears in the tar file. Indeed, the Sphinx top level directory is listed last, and its content before it, so tar extract its content then delete all the directory to recreate the directory, emptied. I can't believe this is the expected behaviour. ** Affects: tar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: The archive exposing the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357345/+attachment/4178372/+files/Sphinx.tar.xz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357345 Title: tar: untaring with --recursive-unlink ends with an empty directory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tar/+bug/1357345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Is it clear that this is a userspace issue, and not a kernel bug? Importance - Low since this bug affects unusual end-user configurations or uncommon hardware. ** Changed in: strongswan (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357098 Title: StrongSwan incorrectly generating esp packets To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/strongswan/+bug/1357098/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yup, there's nowhere to drag that tab because the tab bar is not shown. I don't know what a proper solution could be. Re: [Bug 1356528] Re: k3b dvd burning crashes with growisofs and -use-the-force-luke=dao: option
Hi, ok, I followed your instructions. [Bug 1357099] Re: Wireless driver 4965 AGN error
The hardware should be supported, but the driver you need isn't being loaded. It looks like you've installed ndiswrapper, which shouldn't be necessary for your hardware, and I'm wondering if you somehow ended up blacklisting the driver you need. Try opening a terminal and running this command: $ modprobe -nv pci:v8086d4229sv8086sd1100bc02sc80i00 That should print a list of insmod commands with the last one loading iwl4965.ko. If it prints nothing then the driver is probably blacklisted. In that case run: $ grep iwl4965 /etc/modprobe.d/* and see if it turns up anything which looks like blacklist iwl4965. If so, open the file which contains this line (as root) and either delete the line or comment it out by adding a # character to the start of that line. [Bug 1356393] Re: [XPS M1330, SigmaTel STAC9228, Mic, Internal] volume too low and distorted even with boost
Sorry it took me a few days to get back. L/R channels are not cancelling each other out, and my computer only supports HDMI (not SPDIF). Here's what I found: Using Audacity, a microphone input selection appeared called sysdefault. This microphone functioned properly; in fact, it was a little too loud as I had the gain turned all the way up while trying to fiddle with the other inputs. All input selections are: default: HDA Intel STAC9228 Analogue: HDA Intel STAC9228 Alt Analogue: pulse: default: and sysdefault There was only 1 sysdefault selection, but 6 of each of the others labeled Internal Mic 1-3 and Mic 1-3. I exited Audacity, lowered the gain settings and read a little bit about the how Audacity works. Then I reopened Audacity and found that sysdefault now had the same 6 selections as the other inputs. Strange, but ok. All 3 inputs labeled sysdefault: Internal Mic:# worked properly, and all other input selections performed as described in the original problem (low crackly volume). It was apparent that all I needed to do was change the default device selection to sysdefault. I could confirm this by running arecord test.wav --device=sysdefault which works vs. arecord test.wav which gives the low volume illustrated in the sample audio file above. Next, I undid ALL changes that I made previously. I wanted to start fresh to make sure that I knew which changes were having which effects. I tried running the pulse audio control while recording and changing the input device under the recording tab; however, it only showed 2 devices, neither of which worked. As a matter of fact, I have been unable to find any place where I can select between more than 3 devices (none of which work properly) except in Audacity and gstreamer-properties. I ran gstreamer-properties. The setting was ALSA and STAC 9228 Analogue. I set a custom device as pipeline=alsasrc device=sysdefault. This worked while in gstreamer-properties, but when I exited, it did not save the settings. [Bug 1356528] Re: k3b dvd burning crashes with growisofs and -use-the-force-luke=dao: option
Hi, First I wrote the larger image [...] and, hu, everything went fine :-) Less idle time with the last WRITE command. Then I wrote the smaller image without the dummy-option: ... As you can see, I didn't have to wait until the drive has stopped working because growisofs finished itself... I expected the drive to work on for a while, after the kernel brutally ended the SCSI transaction of the last WRITE command. At that time, the burner has every information it needs to finish the burn job. But it might last a few minutes until its really done. :-[ WRITE@LBA=17900h failed with SK=0h/ASC=00h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error ... Aug 15 12:53:54 t500 kernel: [23704.924174] ata2: hard resetting link This might have caused the burner to end prematurely. Not sure, though. At last I compared the disc with the image, they seem to be identical: It might of course be, that the kernel gets aware only when the burner wants to deliver the status of the final WRITE. Or it might be that the burned area ends less than 70 millimeters away from the center of the DVD's hole. Please measure. :)) Whatever, the final error happens late enough so that the payload data are already written to the medium, and that the medium does not stay in an intermediate unusable state. btw., with bigger images the error occurs again, but this is what you expected, isn't it? Not at all. There is hardly a reason for a long execution time with the last WRITE command, after the 70 millimeter limit was surpassed. How long did the burner chew on the medium with 100% messages ? 4251353088/4251365376 (100.0%) @0.0x, remaining 0:00 RBU 0.1% UBU 100.0% Aug 15 14:17:53 t500 kernel: [28743.900148] Write(10): 2a 00 00 1f ac d0 00 00 06 00 The failing WRITE is indeed the last one: 0x1facd0 = 2075856 decimal with announced image size of 2075862. If the execution time of this WRITE really justifies a timeout, then your burner has a problem with DVD-R. This might be with DVD-R in general, or just with the individual DVD-R which you tired. Re: [Bug 1325565] Re: Since the recent update to CUPS my Epson S20 printer no longer works
Dear Pascal, Thank you for your assistance. I just discovered the hidden control panel for CUPS on localhost/631 a few days ago, by accident when trying out a different Linux OS (Puppy Linux) which had an item in its main menu to Add Printer. Having seen that I tried it on my Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit system and the CUPS control panel listed the Epson Stylus S20, and found a driver for it, and assigned it to the USB port that it was plugged into. The printer then worked normally , as it used to before the upgrades, with a full menu of printing options. Since then I have moved the printer plug to another USB socket, and it has been successfully detected. So the problem seems to have been that the printer was not automatically detected and set up by the gutenprint driver, but once I had found out about the manual installation, and used that, it now gets detected. If I had known about localhost/631 months ago I could have solved the problem, but Ubuntu does not reveal the existence of this to its users. Here is the output from the first part of the Debugging Printer Problems page that you sent me the link for, which detects the printer OK, so I cannot reproduce for you the steps which led to the problem of non-recognition of the printer. regards Tony Morton tony@tony-Inspiron-660s:~$ lsmod | grep usb usblp 22891 0 usb_storage62209 1 ums_realtek usbhid 52570 0 hid 106148 2 hid_generic,usbhid tony@tony-Inspiron-660s:~$ tail -f /var/log/syslog Aug 15 14:00:11 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 280.129883] usb 3-4: SerialNumber: 4B4B3650303555 Aug 15 14:00:11 tony-Inspiron-660s mtp-probe: checking bus 3, device 5: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb3/3-4 Aug 15 14:00:11 tony-Inspiron-660s mtp-probe: bus: 3, device: 5 was not an MTP device Aug 15 14:00:11 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 280.185753] usblp 3-4:1.0: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 5 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04B8 pid 0x0005 Aug 15 14:00:11 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 280.185796] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp Aug 15 14:00:43 tony-Inspiron-660s anacron[906]: Job `cron.daily' started Aug 15 14:00:43 tony-Inspiron-660s anacron[2636]: Updated timestamp for job `cron.daily' to 2014-08-15 Aug 15 14:01:14 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 343.943741] usb 3-4: USB disconnect, device number 5 Aug 15 14:01:14 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 343.943928] usblp0: removed Aug 15 14:01:14 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: remove /devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb3/3-4 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.296697] usb 3-4: new full-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.320318] usb 3-4: New USB device found, idVendor=04b8, idProduct=0005 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.320324] usb 3-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.320327] usb 3-4: Product: USB Printer Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.320329] usb 3-4: Manufacturer: EPSON Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.320332] usb 3-4: SerialNumber: 4B4B3650303555 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s mtp-probe: checking bus 3, device 6: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb3/3-4 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 409.324615] usblp 3-4:1.0: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04B8 pid 0x0005 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s mtp-probe: bus: 3, device: 6 was not an MTP device Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: add /devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb3/3-4/3-4:1.0 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: device devpath is /devices/pci:00/:00:14.0/usb3/3-4/3-4:1.0 Aug 15 14:02:20 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: MFG:EPSON MDL:Stylus S20 SERN:- serial:- Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 410.422042] usblp0: removed Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s kernel: [ 410.432257] usblp 3-4:1.0: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04B8 pid 0x0005 Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: URI matches without serial number: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20S20?serial=4B4B3650303555 Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: No serial number URI matches so using those without Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: URI of detected printer: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20S20?serial=4B4B3650303555, normalized: epson stylus s20 serial 4b4b3650303555 Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: URI of print queue: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20S20?serial=4B4B3650303555, normalized: epson stylus s20 serial 4b4b3650303555 Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: Queue ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_S20 has matching device URI Aug 15 14:02:21 tony-Inspiron-660s udev-configure-printer: URI of print

Not sure if this is in webbrowser-app or qtwebkit, please reassign as necessary. ** Changed in: webbrowser-app (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Critical -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357371 Title: qtwebkit-based webapps no longer working To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webbrowser-app/+bug/1357371/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
