[Bug 1969566] Re: Default to Xorg on NVIDIA-only systems

2022-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

NVIDIA has requested that we default to Xorg on NVIDIA-only systems.
- (I've been told by @jbicha that @kenvandine was advised so)
+ (@kenvandine was advised so)

  One possible reason cited was:
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues/1317
but if anyone finds additional reasons then please add them here.

But good news: This is only for NVIDIA desktops. Hybrid laptops where
Intel/AMD is the primary GPU are unaffected and should default to
Wayland (after bug 1968929 is resolved).

[Bug 1969561] [NEW] Settings > About reports GPUs in the wrong order

2022-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Settings > About reports GPUs in the wrong order

In a typical hybrid setup you have:

  Primary GPU: Intel
  Secondary GPU: Nvidia

and Intel does all the shell rendering.

Yet when I look in Settings > About, the Graphics line reports Nvidia
first and cuts off the Intel GPU information. This is misleading because
the system is really using the Intel GPU for everything until such time
as an app is opened explicitly on the "discrete" GPU. Intel should be
the most prominent GPU on the Graphics line.

[Bug 1876632] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted/missing shell textures when switching users or resuming from suspend

2022-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

The Nvidia driver corrupts and/or forgets its textures when resuming
from suspend, by design. Documented here:

https://www.khronos.org/registry/OpenGL/extensions/NV/NV_robustness_video_memory_purge.txt

Although it's so awkward to implement everywhere that realistically
compositors will never support it fully. Instead we're waiting for an
  Nvidia driver fix.

*NOTE* that this is actually not a common problem because the system
must be using Nvidia as the primary GPU to be affected. So generally
only desktop users will encounter the bug, not laptops. And even then,
only desktops that use suspend/resume and VT switching may trigger it,
if ever. Even in development the bug cannot be reproduced reliably.

- [Workaround]
+ [Workarounds]

+ * Always log into a Xorg session and if corruption occurs then type:
+ Alt+F2, R, Enter
+
+ *

  [Test Plan]

  [Where problems could occur]

  [Original Bug Report]

I recently installed ubuntu 20.04 on my computer, and I am running into
an issue when I do the following:

  * Login with a user on desktop
  * Select switch user, and login as second user
  * Switch user again, and return to original user

At this point, text and icons in the menubar / sidebar are corrupted.
Text and icons in normal windows appear correctly. I have attached a
screenshot of what this looks like.

[Bug 1969396] Re: Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout

2022-04-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I concluded that the description was related to the use of the
us+dvorak-alt-intl layout, and not to g-c-c setting incorrect options.
Observations from use of the us+intl layout:

Alternate Characters Key to None

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt']

Right Alt according to xev: Alt_R

Alternate Characters Key to None + Compose key to Right Ctrl

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt', 'compose:rctrl']

Right Alt according to xev: Alt_R
Right Ctrl according to xev: Multi_key

Alternate Charters Key to None + Compose key to Right Alt
-
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['lv3:ralt_alt', 'compose:ralt']

Right Alt according to xev: Multi_key

I see only expected options and expected results. So please elaborate on
how you think that g-c-c behaves incorrectly, preferably with a
reproducible use case.

[Bug 1969558] [NEW] Incorrect Window Resizing for Extension Settings

2022-04-19 Thread Batwam
Public bug reported:

Issue with gnome-extensions-app

While the main Extensions windows behaves normally when being resizes,
for Extension Settings, when dragging the bottom corner up, the top of
the window also goes down. If I drag the bottom corner down, the top
edge goes up... See screenshots attached. I each case, I only adjusted
the bottom corner, yet, the top edge moved which is not consistent with
the normal window resizing behaviour.

Re: [Bug 1968806] Re: Clamscan reports Unix.Tool.Pnscan-8031486-0 in 1.12+git20180612-2 pnscan version

2022-04-19 Thread Bob Presswood
Pnscan was the only report. I've been looking over the summaries
for Pnscan-8031486-0 at https://malware.prevasio.io/ and it's obvious that
pnscan is used by multiple malware packages and even a miner. In no case
are the ancillary files in the summaries present on my system. But if they
were ever there, they could have been auto-cleaned once pnscan was purged.

It appears to me that this instance is something which probably can't be
pursued further. In a way pnscan presence may just be an invitation.

Thanks.

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not totally sure we need this bug. The problem with Wayland sessions
missing on Nvidia is tracked in bug 1968929. And the use of
NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS should be tracked in bug
1876632. So essentially this bug is just pointing out that we haven't
fixed bug 1876632 yet.

[Bug 1969516] Re: gdm3 crash when switching users

2022-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In order to confirm this is the same issue as bug 1945061 we will need a
stack trace so...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1961127] Re: New upstream microreleases 10.20, 12.10, 13.6 and 14.2

2022-04-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Sergio, or anyone else affected,

Accepted postgresql-12 into focal-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postgresql-12/12.10-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

I've accepted this into -proposed on the basis that it'll make it
possible for you to verify, and it's easy to reject if it turns out you
can't verify it its easy to remove from proposed.

Re: [Bug 1968806] Re: Clamscan reports Unix.Tool.Pnscan-8031486-0 in 1.12+git20180612-2 pnscan version

2022-04-19 Thread Bob Presswood
Hi,

I'm familiar with Brendan Gregg, although I haven't been following him
closely. I have admired his work and sometimes I regret not buying his
books yet.

If you have the impression that my concern is with some load issue, let me
clarify. I have not been using pnscan for any purpose. I just saw that it
was described as a multi-threaded port scanner, and thought it might be
useful in my work someday. I encountered the clamscan flag of pnscan when
I was investigating why memory and swap usage were becoming unusually high
on one of my systems. I don't see any reason to have certainty that pnscan
has anything to do with that problem. I didn't see it in the process
table, anyway. But I was uneasy when I saw this result. And more uneasy
when clamscan had the same complaint with a fresh install of pnscan from
the repository.

One thing I didn't mention in the original submission is that when I
researched the clamscan complaint while pnscan was still installed (by
looking for "Unix.Tool.Pnscan-8031486-0"), a weird graphic appeared on the
screen of a frog (I think it was a frog) with big smile, holding a fishing
pole with a line in a hole (ice hole?). That was freaky and unnerving.
When I repeated this search (several times) after pnscan was purged, I no
longer saw this graphic.

Now, it's rational that some malware might incorporate code from pnscan
for its own purposes, and maybe that's what clamscan wants to be looking
for, but if clamscan doesn't incorporate any mechanism to distinguish
between that malware and pnscan, then confusion results. If you haven't
contacted the clamav folks on this point, I'll do that.

[Bug 1969396] Re: Can't use Right Alt as compose key with English (Dvorak, alt. intl.) layout

2022-04-19 Thread Steve Langasek
> And AFAICT gnome-control-center sets the expected XKB options,

From my initial bug report:

Setting Alternate Characters Key to None, and moving the Compose Key
setting around between different options (and then back to Right Alt),
the behavior of the Right Alt key is still AltGr and not Compose.

So no, gnome-control-center was not setting the expected XKB options
either.

[Bug 1927100] Re: Slow file dialogs, open and save

2022-04-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello sam, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gvfs into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/1.44.1-1ubuntu1.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

[Bug 1968876] Re: ssh-agent: Error connecting to agent: Connection refused

2022-04-19 Thread testpi
Found more specific terms of the problem. I have the keepassxc password
manager version 2.7.1 compiled from source, it stores the keys and it
adds them to ssh-agent, under such conditions this error appears. The
problem arose only after updating openssh to 8.9p1 and only on arm. With
version 8.8p1 it continues to work, but on PC it also works with 8.9p1.
If you put the keys in the .ssh folder, then everything works, it
stopped working only in conjunction with keepassxc.

Hello, my guess is clamav is helpfully pointing out that the program
exists at all; I doubt it has any intelligence beyond looking for a few
markers for pnscan within files named pnscan.

Diagnosing load issues takes a bit of work; I suggest starting with

to get a feeling of useful steps to take.

[Bug 1968806] [NEW] Clamscan reports Unix.Tool.Pnscan-8031486-0 in 1.12+git20180612-2 pnscan version

2022-04-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

My system showed unusually high memory and swap usage for a few weeks,
also occasional lags in situations when it was always brisk before. I
naturally ran clamscan to check. Pnscan was flagged as containing the
malware. I removed and purged pnscan, and continued to scan for
anything else out of line. Saw nothing else, and rebooted. Memory and
swap usage was normal for several hours. Then I reinstalled pnscan from
the repository. Clamscan reported Unix.Tool.Pnscan-8031486-0 in pnscan
again. So I removed and purged pnscan again.

I recognize that clamscan could be misleading here, but I never saw this
report before, and it's clear that my memory and swap issues haven't
returned.

I'm going to suggest this is a security vulnerability, even though the
clamscan result might be misleading.

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
Note that I stumbled onto the above fix after noticing the example shown
for the udev escaped quoting support showed an example with double
quotes surrounded by single quotes which in turn surrounded escaped
double quotes...

https://git.alternativebit.fr/NinjaTrappeur/Systemd/commit/7e760b79ad143b26a5c937afa7666a7c40508f85

udev-rules: all values can contain escaped double quotes now (#6890)
This is primarly useful to support escaped double quotes in PROGRAM or
IMPORT{program} directives.

The only possibilty before this patch was to use an external shell script but
this seems too cumbersome for trivial logics such as

 PROGRAM=="/bin/sh -c 'FOO=\"%s{model}\"; echo ${FOO:0:4}'"

or any similar shell constructs that needs to deals with patterns including
whitespaces.

As it's the case for single quote and for directives running a program, words
within escaped double quotes will be considered as a single argument.

Fixes: #6835

[Bug 1969447] Re: 42.0-1ubuntu6 doesn't recongize the presence of NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS=1

2022-04-19 Thread Jack Howarth
I have found that current /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules can be fixed by
swapping the order of the single and escaped double quotes from...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c \"sed -e 's/: /=/g' -e
's/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g' -e 's/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g' -e
's/^/NVIDIA_/' /proc/driver/nvidia/params\""

which fails to parse correctly to...

IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c 'sed -e \"s/: /=/g\" -e
\"s/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g\" -e \"s/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g\"
-e \"s/^/NVIDIA_/\" /proc/driver/nvidia/params'"

which parses properly and allows the test for

ENV{NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS}!="1",
GOTO="gdm_disable_wayland"

to succeed when /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf contains...

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

[Bug 1969524] Re: Broken login on jammy VM using wayland, on a jammy host

2022-04-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- I have a jammy laptop I installed today, and I used the same iso to
- create a jammy VM using virt-manager. In that VM, after the installation
- is complete, I cannot login. The screen either stays black, or throws me
- back to the login prompt. If I switch to Xorg login type, then it works.
+ Impact
+ --
+ If you use virt-manager or gnome-boxes from a 22.04 host to install a 22.04
VM, the VM tries to use Wayland by default and only shows a black screen.

- More data coming up.
+ Test Case
+ -
+ 1. Install the osinfo-db update and gnome-boxes
+ 2. Close GNOME Boxes if it's running. Open GNOME Boxes.
+ 3. Click the + icon, then Create virtual machine from file. Select your
Ubuntu 22.04 desktop ISO.
+ 4. Follow the prompts to create your box.
+ 5. After it finishes installing, click the box. Log in. The screen should
show like normal.

- Suggested fix
- -
- I think we're going to want to revert
- https://gitlab.com/libosinfo/osinfo-db/-/commit/6ef9c9d4979d8
+ What Could Go Wrong
+ ---
+ This disables the 3D Acceleration (virgl) feature. The 3D Acceleration
feature is disabled by default (you have to manually enable it even after
installing a distro where it is offered).

- Try removing that section from your
- /usr/share/osinfo/os/ubuntu/ubuntu-18.04.xml before creating a jammy VM.
+ And you have to toggle the switch to keep it working:
+
+ It's not clear why this black screen bug occurs, but there is an easy
+ fix to revert a not very useful feature that only landed in 22.04 about
+ a week ago.

[Bug 1969529] [NEW] snapd failing to seed firefox on Pi 400

2022-04-19 Thread Dave Jones
Public bug reported:

when testing on a Pi 400 (but not other Pi 4 models, so far), snapd
failed to install/seed properly on first boot with the result that no
Firefox icon appears on the launcher. The problem re-occurred following
a reboot.

The snapd OOPS report from the initial boot:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/fa9433d0-c022-11ec-8ae0-fa163e993415

The snapd OOPS report after a reboot:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/3c953be8-c024-11ec-8ae0-fa163e993415

Will re-flash the card and try again to see if this is transitory.

Hi Dries,

Please do not feel a rush to validate the fix, I was more asking just to
confirm personally that your issue has been resolved :)

That message about dropping the fix is more of an empty threat by a bot
than anything else..

So feel free at your earliest convenience to update and confirm that the
new kernel fixes things for you.

Best,

[Bug 1872813] Re: cloud-init fails to detect iSCSI root on focal Oracle instances

2022-04-19 Thread Jorge Merlino
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ When creating a bare metal instance on Oracle Cloud (which are backed by an
iscsi disk), the IP address is configured on an interface (enp45s0f0) on boot,
but cloud-init is generating a /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml with an entry to
configure enp12s0f0 using dhcp. As a result, enp12s0f0 will send a DHCPREQUEST
and wait for a reply until it times out, delaying the boot process, as there's
no dhcp server serving this interface.
+ This is caused by a missing /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface that should
point to the enp45s0f0 interface
+
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ There is a script from the open-iscsi package that checks if there are
+ no iscsi disks present and if there are no disks removes the
+ /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface file that stores the interface where
+ the iscsi disk is present.
+
+ This script originally runs along the local-top initrd scripts but uses
+ the /dev/disk/by-path/ path to find if there are iscsi discs present.
+ This path does not yet exists when the local-top scripts are run so the
+ file is always removed.
+
+ This was fixed in Focal by moving the script to run along the local-
+ bottom scripts. When these scripts run the /dev/disk/by-path/ path
+ exists.
+
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ This can be reproduced by instancing any bare metal instance on Oracle
+ Cloud (all are backed by an iscsi disk) and checking if the
+ /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface file is present.
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ There should be no problems as the script runs anyway but later into the
+ boot process.
+
+ If the script fails to run it could leave the open-iscsi.interface file
+ present with no iscsi drives but that should cause no issues besides
+ delaying the boot process.
+
+

[Bug 1968518] Re: FFe: Backport new RDP settings

2022-04-19 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Random thoughts there

VNC was never on by default, if it's enabled it is because the user went
to the setting to turn it on so it shouldn't come to a surprise to them
that they are sharing their desktop. Since it's an user decision and
something they might rely on, it feels rude to turn if off for them on
upgrade and probably not what users are going to expect?

we probably still want the blue bar since that's the only way to avoid
the possibility of 'unknowingly running a VNC remote desktop server.'.
Upgrades aren't the only case to consider, we will have users copying a
grdctl cmd from the internet and forgetting about it or not understand
what they are doing.
