[Bug 1973654] Re: Using debian-installer on a server with a Let's Encrypt cert dies

2022-05-16 Thread Alex Murray
I believe this is caused by debootstrap - it only uses packages from the
release pocket (and this is frozen from the time Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was
originally released). This is a known issue
https://askubuntu.com/questions/744684/latest-security-updates-with-
debootstrap but I am not sure if there is much you can do to get debian-
installer to say use multistrap instead of debootstrap.

** Package changed: ca-certificates (Ubuntu) => debian-installer
(Ubuntu)

I had the same problem.

There appears to be an issue about where python3 is located.

Downloading the latest version 0.13.1 and then running impressive.py

[Bug 1973434] Re: massive performance issues since 22.04 upgrade

2022-05-16 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Henning,

That is great news that "intel_iommu=off" on the kernel command line did
the trick.

You can follow this bug to get updates on when we will be disabling
IOMMU by default in the 5.15 kernel. It should be soon, the patches are
already submitted, and reviewed by the kernel team. The next step is for
the patch to be applied to the git tree and the next kernel update
built.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1971699

I'll let you know once there is a kernel in -proposed with IOMMU
disabled. The patches missed this current SRU cycle, and will be in the
next one, so it might be in a few weeks / months time.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1971699] Re: disable Intel DMA remapping by default

2022-05-16 Thread Matthew Ruffell
A user has reported extensive performance issues with a Lenovo Thinkpad
X1 Extreme Gen 2 laptop computer, in bug 1973434. The user reports video
playback hangs, browser hangs and virtual machines hanging.

Their dmesg indicates the system has 2x IOMMUs and there are 25 groups
being configured. They tested "intel_iommu=off", and the performance
issues are no longer seen.

[Bug 1973678] [NEW] CIFS creash mounting DFS share in 22.04

2022-05-16 Thread Matthew Hoberg
Public bug reported:

I am trying to mount a DFS share in 22.04 and receive a kernel issue
with cifs when trying to browse. The DFS share is a combination of 2
shared folders on server into one single share.

lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=22.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=jammy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 22.04 LTS"

mount -v -t cifs -o
rw,credentials=/etc/creds.conf,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777
//server/dfsroot /shares/dfs-share

The mount command doesn't show error, but show "Killed" when trying to
list directory.

I had the same problem. Seems to be an issue with python version
naming.

Creating a symlink:

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/python

appears to get everything working again.

You may also be able to use:

sudo apt install python-is-python3

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1973676] [NEW] flickering and black screen from boot time, no more display after 22.04 upgrade

2022-05-16 Thread David Bellot
Public bug reported:

On an HP x360 Spectre (i7-8565U WhiskeyLake-U GT2 [UHD Graphics 620]),
after upgrading to 22.04 from 21.10, the display goes to some flickering
lines in black and grey or colors (remember the artifacts on Amstrad CPC
or C64 when loading from a tape? Same here...).

After the initial grub menu, the kernel loads and boots. There are a few
lines of log when the screen is in text mode. As soon as the plymouth
screen comes in, the screen starts flickering massively. Nothing
appeared on the screen except horizontal lines. I have an encrypted
partition, so I type in the password and then the screen goes to
flickering lines in color when Wayland starts.

I tried different kernels:
- 5.17.8: failed
- 5.15.x: all failed (from Ubuntu 22.04)
- 5.13.19: works and back to normal

I found the following errors in the logs:
* i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=43426
end=43427) time 300 us, min 2146, max 2159, scanline start 2131, end 2171
* i915 :00:02.0: [drm] Finished loading DMC firmware
i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin (v1.4)
* i915 :00:02.0: [drm] [ENCODER:102:DDI B/PHY B] is disabled/in DSI mode
with an ungated DDI clock, gate it
* i915 :00:02.0: [drm] [ENCODER:113:DDI C/PHY C] is disabled/in DSI mode
with an ungated DDI clock, gate it
* i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun

So the problem is > 5.13.x series

I temporarily solved it by downgrading to 5.13.19 from ubuntu mainline
on a newly updated ubuntu 22.04! But it seems the bug affects all the
kernels.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

  apport-collect 1973638

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1973638] Re: gnome-shell memory leak after did 100+ screenshot

2022-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The screenshot in comment #1 shows gnome-shell is only 168MB resident.
So no leak there.

Please run:

  ps auxw > psoutput.txt
  free -h > free.txt
  lspci -k > lspci.txt
  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

I suspect there is no leak here and we should instead investigate
"system very laggy".

[Bug 1973610] Re: Bluetooth will not stay on or connect to devices when on

2022-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We haven't had any bug reports like this that weren't hardware-specific.
Maybe to avoid confusion here we should choose just one Bluetooth chip.
Either the USB dongle (Broadcom Corp. BCM20702A0) or the internal chip
(Intel AX210/AX211/AX411).

[Bug 1973474] Re: Rename "Pin to Dash" to "Pin to Dock"

2022-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not sure I agree with this, but do appreciate the wording is
confusing in a world of dash and dock.

* Regular users are less likely to understand "pinned" as much as "favourites".
* Power users may have no dock, only a dash, and so the existing wording is
correct.
* It's a patch we would have to maintain.

[Bug 1971576] Re: SATA device hot plug regression on AMD EPYC (Asus) server

2022-05-16 Thread Khaled El Mously
Hello Zhanglei. Thanks. This means:

3000: BUG
3002: NO BUG
3003: NO BUG
3004: NO BUG
3005: BUG
3006: NO BUG

There are only 5 patches between 3005 and 3006 so one of them is the problem.
You can see the list of patches here:

https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/TkvDGcfHWk/plain/

Only one of them seems related to sata which is "ata: ahci: Add Green
Sardine vendor ID as board_ahci_mobile" So maybe this is the one.

Please test kernel 3007 from here:

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kmously/kernel-kmously-3b63e74-Mkii/

If this fails, then this will be the last kernel we have to test. Please
make sure you are running version 3007. Thanks

The 5.4.0-1075-azure and newer kernels are broken in that the VM can

It turns out there is a bug in https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+git/bionic/commit/?id=16a3c750a78d8,
which misses the second hunk of the upstream patch
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=877b911a5ba0.

Please apply the below patch to fix the issue:

BTW, please apply this patch as well (Note: this patch is not really required
as it's only for error handling path, which is usually unlikely):

[Bug 1973669] [NEW] 10_linuxzfs fails if a non-root filesystem has a mountpoint of /

2022-05-16 Thread Jason S
Public bug reported:

For ~4 years, this server ran Ubuntu-18.04 with the OS on mirrored SSDs
and all persistent data in a zpool on separate disks. Last week I
upgraded it. Installation of Ubuntu-22.04 ZFS-root on a new SSD ran
flawlessly. But after importing the persistent data pool, update-grub
(specifically 10_linux_zfs) found the valid kernels but wouldn't create
grub entries for them so /boot/grub/grub.cfg only contained memtest86.
10_linux_zfs's section of grub-mkconfig output is below.

The problem turned out to be a FreeBSD backup I'd zfs-send/rec'd to the
Ubuntu system 2 years ago. At the time, I added a prefix ("zmule") to
all of the FreeBSD filesystems' mountpoints and turned off "canmount".
Somehow I missed the *actual* root filesystem so it was still set to
mount on '/' with "canmount" enabled - though Ubuntu22.04 wouldn't mount
it on top of /, so I never noticed it. However, that's what was
confusing /etc/grub.d/10_linux_zfs even though 18.04 was fine with it.
Once I changed FreeBSD's root mountpoint to not '/', update-grub ran as
expected.

I know this is a strange, unusual situation that shouldn't happen, but a
missing /etc/os-release file in one root(ish) filesystem shouldn't block
it from creating entries for valid ones. If you'd like me to break it
again and run 10_linux_zfs with 'set -x' or similar, I'll be happy to do
that. (I'm a Linux SRE professionally so breaking stuff is all in a
days work.)

One more note: the bug submission wouldn't let me use "grub-common" as
the package, so I changed that to "grub2" even though, as you can see
below, that's not what's installed.

[Bug 1958191] Re: [i915] Screen flickering in Ubuntu 22.04 (until i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2 are added)

2022-05-16 Thread David Bellot
Half-related to this bug but worth mentioning it because it is certainly
linked to it. On a HP x360 Spectre (i7-8565U WhiskeyLake-U GT2 [UHD
Graphics 620]), the trick with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.

The problem is more serious here because the screen flickers and goes to
black, purple, green, entirely, immediately after the boot (so basically
when the kernel presumably changes the graphics mode)

I tried different kernels:
- 5.17.8: failed
- 5.15.x: all failed (from Ubuntu 22.04)
- 5.13.19: works and back to normal

So the problem is > 5.13.x series

[Bug 1972766] Re: Changing default mounting options causes root owner

2022-05-16 Thread bhikkhu subhuti
The problem is, if you want a partition to be auto-mounted, you either must
edit the fstab or THE INSTRUCTIONS are to turn off the "default" mounting in
gnome disk utility and it will auto-mount. However, the auto-mounting is done
as system root and I don't have access to it. So I must google and google and
more google until I find that I put some settings like uuid=1000.

This is a big problem.
Why?
Well I setup my 22.04 with a full wipe, but kept my data partition.
My git was totally broken on my data partition and I thought it was ubuntu 22.04
But then with just git and ubuntu and vscode it worked.. so I installed the
rest of the apps and it broke (I also setup my data partition to auto-mount)
then I thought it was my proton vpn which was the only ppa
It took a long time to realize it was the auto-mount .. merely changing
defaults switch.

I had wiped my system 3 times before I figured this out.
Then I had to do a lot of googling to auto-mount for myself. It seems very
logical that I would want to use a drive that I setup as automount.

If the user is selecting auto-mount, why not automatically allow that user to
read access?
Instead it defaults to system.

[Bug 1973648] Re: Raspberry Pi - Ubuntu Jammy - OTG USB Not Working

2022-05-16 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on
Libera.chat.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1973648/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1973654] [NEW] Using debian-installer on a server with a Let's Encrypt cert dies

2022-05-16 Thread Mathew Binkley
Public bug reported:

While using debian-installer to install Ubuntu Focal, I get the
following error:

May 16 22:02:41 base-installer: Certificate verification failed:
The certificate is NOT trusted. The certificate chain uses expired
certificate. Could not handshake: Error in the certificate
verification. [IP: 129.59.59.10 443]

There was an issue in 2021, where the "DST_Root_CA_X3.crt" certificate
used by Let's Encrypt expired.

https://letsencrypt.org/docs/dst-root-ca-x3-expiration-
september-2021/

The problem is that the certificate is still included in the "ca-
certificates_20190110ubuntu1_all.deb" that debian-installer fetches
during install.

May 16 22:02:17 debootstrap: Preparing to unpack
.../ca-certificates_20190110ubuntu1_all.deb ...
May 16 22:02:17 debootstrap: Unpacking ca-certificates (20190110ubuntu1) ...
May 16 22:02:31 debootstrap: Setting up ca-certificates (20190110ubuntu1)

(20190110ubuntu1) ...
May 16 22:02:40 debootstrap: Running hooks in
/etc/ca-certificates/update.d...

Because the certificate is expired, debian-installer dies with:

May 16 22:02:41 base-installer: Certificate verification failed: The
certificate is NOT trusted. The certificate chain uses expired certificate.
Could not handshake: Error in the certificate verification. [IP: 129.59.59.10

te is NOT trusted. The certificate chain uses expired certificate. Could not
handshake: Error in the certificate verification. [IP: 129.59.59.10 443]

Can Ubuntu update the ca-certificate .deb pulled during install to one
that does not have DST_Root_CA_X3.crt? Thanks.

[Bug 1966886] Re: ssh-copy-id and Dropbear Server

2022-05-16 Thread Gertjan
Just to add a voice to this: we see the same things migrating from 18.04
to 22.04 while controlling some embedded ARM/Debian devices running
dropbear. The key are indeed appearing in the wrong place as stated
above and the log in does not proceed as expected. We can work around
this for production systems, but the behaviour is confusing (and
obviously not consistent between 18.04 and 22.04).

[Bug 1973152] Re: Wrong timezone automatically selected during installation

2022-05-16 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
New ISP, now my systems keep thinking I'm in Denver (even my
Chromebook!). Closing this as invalid, since even Chrome OS is affected.
This is my Internet's fault, not Ubuntu's (unless there's something
wrong with GNU/Linux so deep that it affects Ubuntu and Chrome OS, which
I seriously doubt).

** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

** Description changed:

+ This bug is the fault of either all of GNU/Linux (unlikely), or it's my
+ ISP's fault (way more likely).
+
+ Original report:
+
Note: This bug might be the fault of my ISP - I'm using Verizon's
Premium Mobile Hotspot plan as my home internet, and I've noticed a
similar problem in Lubuntu Jammy. Seems like this bug probably would
have been caught back then, so I'm pretty sure this isn't Ubuntu's
fault, but just in case, I'm posting it. I'm about to have a different
ISP most likely tomorrow, so I'll be able to test again then.

Testing Ubuntu Kinetic in a VM, doing the "Install (entire disk with lvm
and encryption)" test. Same host hardware and software as present in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/1973150

In step 18 of the test, the timezone automatically detected is New York.
I'm in the Chicago timezone, and had to manually select it. This
contradicts the testcase, which states that the timezone and city
displayed should match my timezone and the main city from my area.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

1: Download the Ubuntu Kinetic daily ISO from 2022-05-11. Here's the link:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20220511.1/kinetic-desktop-amd64.iso
2: Open virt-manager, and ensure that you have a connection to "QEMU/KVM User
session". (If you don't, you can create this connection in virt-manager by
clicking "File", "Add Connection", selecting "QEMU/KVM user session" in the
"Hypervisor" drop down, then clicking "Connect".
3: Create a new VM under QEMU/KVM user session. Select the Kinetic ISO
downloaded above, set the OS to "Ubuntu 21.04" (that's the newest version my
virt-manager recognizes), and give it 4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores, and 20 GB of disk
space.
4: Follow the steps in this test procedure:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/433/builds/247872/testcases/1451/results

Expected result: In step 18 of the test, the timezone automatically
detected should match the timezone the user is in.

Actual result: The timezone automatically detected is somewhere not even
close to where the user is.

[Bug 1973101] Re: After upgrade to 22.04 NFS exports for vers 2 and 3 no longer work

2022-05-16 Thread Robert Dinse
This is just plain WRONG. The issue is NOT the kernel, upstream or
otherwise. I am using 5.17.7 compiled directly from kernel source off
of kernel.org, and was using the SAME kernel under 20.04.

The issue was your new configuration file, /etc/nfs.conf, that did not
exist prior to 22.04, and thus I had no reason to look for it, having
UDP disabled by default even for versions 2 and 3 of NFS which makes
ZERO sense as version 2 and 3 of NFS did not support TCP.

Once I was made aware of this conf file by you simply turning version 2 and UDP
on resolved my
issues. You can close this bug if you like but having udp = n by default in
this conf file is dumb, the current upstream kernel supports it just fine.

[Bug 1973643] [NEW] non automatic release upgrade

2022-05-16 Thread galileoo
Public bug reported:

I use ubuntu 20.04 for few years now.
Ubuntu 22.04 released april 21 but my system don't ask me to upgrade

I configured my option to update only to lts

If I try sudo do-release-upgrade I have :

Pour mettre à niveau vers la dernière version de développement non LTS
définir Prompt=normal dans /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.

If I modify prompt from lts to normal it offer me to upgrade.

For the moment I didn't accept to upgrade because I prefer to find a
solution of this bug

Best regards

[Bug 1946828] Re: ntfsresize hang and call traces in syslog

2022-05-16 Thread Dan Bungert
I retested this today using my same failing VM.

Test scenario:
* hardware: kvm with windows 10 on disk, UEFI
* boot Ubiquity ISO
* "try ubuntu"
* launch installer
* press the "continue" button until one of the following happens:
  * "installation type" screen shows
  or
  * hang at the "updates and other software screen" -
wait 1 minute and look for ntfsresize in process state 'D'

Results:
* Impish: 3/10 success rate ("installation type" screen reached)
* Jammy: 10/10 success rate

Based on this I consider this fixed in Jammy.

[Bug 1973619] Re: Sane net autodiscovery not working in 22.04

2022-05-16 Thread Joao Fraga
Yes, it is:

$ dpkg --get-selections *sane*
libsane-common install
libsane-hpaio:amd64 install
libsane1:amd64 install
sane-airscaninstall
sane-utils install

The exact same set of packages installed in my Ubuntu 21.10.
The only difference are the versions.
