[Bug 2065751] [NEW] Mate-panel crashes (easy to reproduce)
Public bug reported: There are many reports out there about mate panel crashes. Ubuntu Version used: Mantic People taking care about this package should make a decision and use the latest mate-panel sourcecode in order to not duplicate developer efforts to fix bugs. Mate-panel is a highly unstable package it shows up numerous valgrind issues and crashes easily when eg. using FreeCAD and switching to fullscreen / windowed mode using ALT-F11 I would strongly recommend to stop distributing the old version of mate desktop environment and set up a system to use the latest git versions until basic stability is given (and just restarting mate-panel when it crashes is not an attractive option). Releasing faulty software in LTS/stable releases does not make any sense; if unstable and if the user wants it use the latest git sources for it (again to avoid developers doing duplicate work on debugging issues) Mate HUD is able to lock up the entire desktop (it did it here, multiple times). My next step here is to remove the mate ubuntu packages and go for the latest git sources (dconf-editor (segfault) and xserver-xorg-input- synaptics (coasting bug) package have the same issues - ubuntu is releasing unstable versions while obvious bugs are fixed already in the latest code repositories). ** Affects: mate-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: There are many reports out there about mate panel crashes. + + Ubuntu Version used: Mantic People taking care about this package should make a decision and use the latest mate-panel sourcecode in order to not duplicate developer efforts to fix bugs. [Bug 2065747] [NEW] An unknown display appears in both the GNOME display manager and NVIDIA X Server Settings
Public bug reported: A short while after this clean installation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, a strange unknown display appeared both in GNOME Settings and in NVIDIA X Server Settings. I noticed it because I could see my mouse cursor disappear beyond the boundaries of my monitor as if it is being extended with a second one. In GNOME Settings it is listed as an"Unknown Display", but in NVIDIA X Server Settings, it appears as a PRIME display which is confusing since I am using a desktop configuration. Currently, setting the second mirror to be mirrored seems to "fix" the issue, but it is a recurring problem. The issue concerns an nVidia RTX 2080ti. [Bug 2065430] Re: Screen doesn't wake from keyboard action when keyboard is connected to monitor USB hub.
I was unable to test another graphics card in the pcie slot, but the intel graphics from the cpu do not reproduce this issue. I've also tested with another monitor with similar specs and the issue doesn't occur on that one, so I think it's isolated to only one monitor I have (the affected monitor is the NEC one in MonitorsUser.xml.txt). I do think that the PCI bus errors are probably related to the motherboard. [Bug 2065739] Re: Unnattended upgrades take a long time due to excessive running of "apt-check"
For example look at .var.log.apt.history.log.txt Many packages take less than a second to install. But in between each one is a 15 to 20 second delay. That delay is the time during which apt- check is running. You can watch this happening by running "watch systemctl status apt- daily-upgrade" and looking at the processes in the cgroup: ``` ~$ systemctl status apt-daily-upgrade ● apt-daily-upgrade.service - Daily apt upgrade and clean activities Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/apt-daily-upgrade.service; static) Active: activating (start) since Tue 2024-05-14 23:01:03 BST; 1h 29min ago TriggeredBy: ● apt-daily-upgrade.timer Docs: man:apt(8) Main PID: 29655 (apt.systemd.dai) Tasks: 11 (limit: 9299) Memory: 1.6G CPU: 1h 12min 57.651s CGroup: /system.slice/apt-daily-upgrade.service ├─ 29655 /bin/sh /usr/lib/apt/apt.systemd.daily install ├─ 29659 /bin/sh /usr/lib/apt/apt.systemd.daily lock_is_held install ├─ 29688 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade ├─181903 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade ├─181970 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade ├─181978 sh -c "if [ -d /var/lib/update-notifier ]; then touch /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp; fi; /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available 2>/dev/null || true" ├─181980 /bin/sh -e /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available ├─181994 /usr/bin/python3 /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable └─182339 /usr/bin/python3 -Es /usr/bin/lsb_release -c -s ``` Then manually running "time apt-check" ``` ~$ time /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable Expanded Security Maintenance for Applications is not enabled. 269 updates can be applied immediately. 45 of these updates are standard security updates. [Bug 2065739] [NEW] Unnattended upgrades take a long time due to excessive running of "apt-check"
Public bug reported: The unattended upgrade services runs "apt-check" to update the MOTD where a summary of available updates is displayed. It does this after every package that is installed. Unfortunately, apt-check is extremely expensive - it takes about 15 seconds to run. If you have a computer that is infrequently used, you may have as many as 300 available updates. Unattended upgrade will therefore run apt- check 300 times. This takes 1 hour 15 minutes, during which time no packages are actually installed. Suppose you turn on your computer once a week to do something like pay some bills. It takes 5 minutes. Then you have to wait 2 hours before you can turn it off. Every time. The fix for FTBFS which has been added to Debian package now. 2. The Ubuntu delta also removes the flag '-modern' to fix a build warning. But the warning does not cause any error. It only prints "Deprecated command line option: -modern. Ignored, this option is now always on." in the build log. imho, its better to sync than carry forward the Ubuntu delta for the build warning fix. I have built the package in a PPA to confirm there is no FTBFS. The builds can be seen at https://launchpad.net/~sudipmuk/+archive/ubuntu/test-ppa/+packages. Changelog entries since current oracular version 0.3.8-2.1ubuntu2: adonthell (0.3.8-3) unstable; urgency=medium * Team upload. * use new dh-sequence-python3 * add flex to build dep * update patch for Python3.11 * fix FTBFS with new swig (Closes: #1064675) [ Debian Janitor ] * Trim trailing whitespace. * Use secure URI in Homepage field. * Set upstream metadata fields: Bug-Submit (from ./configure). -- Alexandre Detiste Sat, 27 Apr 2024 18:36:43 +0200 ** Affects: adonthell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2065731 Title: Sync adonthell 0.3.8-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/adonthell/+bug/2065731/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-jammy-linux- nvidia-6.8' to 'verification-done-jammy-linux-nvidia-6.8'. If the problem still exists, change the tag 'verification-needed-jammy-linux- nvidia-6.8' to 'verification-failed-jammy-linux-nvidia-6.8'. If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed.
