[Bug 815318] Re: song icon gets cut off if no album

2011-07-26 Thread Alex Engelmann
The icon being used is 48x48, and is probably one of the following (I
tried digging through the Banshee source code, but couldn't figure it
out):

in /usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/

audio-x-generic.png
sound.png
gnome-mime-audio.png
gnome-mime-application-ogg.png

They're all part of the default GNOME icon theme, although Clearlooks
seems to be the only theme that causes it. If for example I use the
Ambiance theme but customize it to use the GNOME icon set, the icon
shows up correctly aligned. So the bug appears to be specific to the
way Clearlooks is implemented in Banshee.

[Bug 815318] [NEW] song icon gets cut off if no album

2011-07-24 Thread Alex Engelmann
Public bug reported:

This is a small bug, but I thought I would point it out since it's a
really obvious one. When playing a song with no album icon, the green
eighth song icon that's part of the Clearlooks Gnome Theme gets cut
off. I've attached a screenshot.

I don't know if this is a bug in the theme or in Banshee though, since
other themes don't have the same problem.

[Bug 583790] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 and Western DIgital's new Advanced Format SATA drives - constant drive errors

2011-07-11 Thread Alex Engelmann
I finally got Ubuntu installed! Because Ubiquity will partition 4k HDD
drives wrong, you have to do the following:

1. Make the partitions you want with GNU Parted in the commandline, easily done
by booting from a live-USB or live-CD and making sure to use parted -a optimal
2. Use the 11.04 alternative installer CD and manually set the mount points for
all the partitions. A live-CD installer might work, but it didn't for me.
Ubiquity will complain that the disk is misaligned if you try to format any
partitions besides the swap are, so make sure they've already been formatted in
Disk Utility.

For some reason Ubiquity wants to put the first partition at the 34th
sector of the HDD, while Disk Utility and Parted will both (correctly)
put the first partition at the 63rd sector. Hopefully the developers
can have this fixed before Oneiric's release!

[Bug 583790] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 and Western DIgital's new Advanced Format SATA drives - constant drive errors

2011-07-10 Thread Alex Engelmann
I'm having similar problems with a Seagate AF drive. However, I learned
how to use GNU Parted and set up the partition such that it is aligned,
as described above by Maxime. The problem is that when I install Ubuntu
on it, the system doesn't install correctly and hangs at the splash
screen.

However, if I let Ubiquity make all the partitions, then they end up
misaligned, according to Ubuntu's disk utility (palimpsest) and GNU
Parted. So basically Ubiquity won't install on a correctly aligned
drive, and insists on misaligning the partitions it makes. Either GNU
Parted AND Disk Utility are buggy, or Ubiquity is buggy.

[Bug 808127] Re: can't resize partition

2011-07-10 Thread Alex Engelmann
Actually I think it has something to do with misaligned partitions. I'm
still not sure how to fix it because of the way Ubiquity is working, but
there's others who have had trouble with 4k block size drives. I
already filed a bug in Ubiquity about it:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/583790

GParted doesn't complain about misaligned partitions at all, not even
when Ubiquity or GNU Parted and Ubuntu's Disk Utility complain that
there's misaligned partitions. Maybe that's a feature worth adding?
Not sure which programs to trust by this point for making partitions...

[Bug 791787] Re: gnome-appearance-properties not installing themes correctly

2011-06-04 Thread Alex Engelmann
I've resolved it. It appears to a bug that is particular to Adwaita and
all themes derived from it, and I've already contacted some of the theme
developers.

I couldn't figure out what effect might be causing it, but I did go
ahead and take a screenshot so you can see the problem. It seems to
have something to do with missing window borders, but changing the theme
doesn't make a difference.

[Bug 791787] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties not installing themes correctly

2011-06-02 Thread Alex Engelmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, and am having difficulties installing new
themes from GNOME-Look.org, where they would not install succesfully as
full themes, but only as components (Window Border, etc). I decided to
run the program in a terminal and see if there was any relevant output.
The attached file shows all the output.

[Bug 791787] Re: gnome-appearance-properties not installing themes correctly

2011-06-02 Thread Alex Engelmann
I've been able to reproduce the bug on my laptop, also Ubuntu 11.04
64bit. So to sum it up more clearly:

I'm using 1:2.32.1-0ubuntu15 (gnome-control-center)

What I expected to happen: Installing themes by dragging and dropping
the theme into appearance manager themes, says installed successfully
and then works no problem.

What actually happened: When I install a particular theme by dragging
and dropping, I get the terminal output posted above. With other
themes, though the GUI reports having installed successfully, they are
not installed successfully, but I don't get that terminal output.

How to reproduce it: Even just launching gnome-appearance-properties
will give the above output, no matter which theme is selected (even
default Ambiance theme). However, deleting one particular theme from my
home/.themes directory seems to make it go away. Deleting that theme
manually within appearance manager doesn't actually remove it from that
directory, so the output still occurs.

I'm starting to think these are 2 possibly unrelated bugs: one with a
particular theme, and one with appearance manager. I would greatly
appreciate input from someone more knowledgeable :)

I'm on Brasero 2.32 on Maverick and it still happens, no matter what

I like the idea that was suggested above of just relabeling the button
continue instead of cancel, at least until the bug gets fixed. That
way new users won't wonder if their media burned correctly or not.

[Bug 672385] Re: suspend goes to blank screen

2010-11-21 Thread Alex Engelmann
So it's a happened a few more times since then, and I've paid more
attention this last time, so here goes (in the format of that site for
clarity):

The machine breaks while going to sleep, so I shut it off manually.
Afterwards, it reboots normally, with no error messages.

it happens maybe 40% of the time, and it seems like the longer the
system has been running, the more likely it is to happen, though I can't
pinpoint any specific culprit. So it's not quite reproducible.

I'm not sure if it happened before, since I hadn't tried the suspend
feature until now.

This last time when it was in the limbo state I tried switching to a
different virtual console (through CTRL + ALT + F2), which didn't do
anything. I did not receive flashing caps lock, but the entire
keyboard's backlight started flashing, and I couldn't turn off the
backlight with the usual button (I'm on a Logitech G15 keyboard). I've
never seen the keyboard do this before. The system eventually turned
off after a few minutes and then hung on resume too, so this crash was
the worst yet.

[Bug 675368] [NEW] Image previews of apps don't work in Ubuntu Software center

2010-11-14 Thread Alex Engelmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

The image previews for applications don't work in my software center.

1) I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 amd64
2) I'm using version 3.0.5 of the software-center
3 4) The small image preview shows up fine, but when I click on it to get a
larger image, I instead get a big ubuntu symbol. I've attached a screenshot.
This occurs with all apps, so it must be a problem with the software center
itself.

[Bug 672385] [NEW] suspend goes to blank screen

2010-11-07 Thread Alex Engelmann
Public bug reported:

I've had it happen more than once now, so I thought it would be worth
reporting, if anyone else is having problems.

Sometimes when I put my desktop in suspend the system acts like it's
going to suspend, but it just ends up in an unresponsive limbo. There's
no screen output, and keyboard and mouse don't do anything, but the
computer is on and fans are blowing. I'm then forced to press the power
button and shut it off, losing what I was doing earlier.

I'd be glad to post whatever system specs might be relevant. I'm on
Ubuntu 10.10 amd64.

[Bug 616287] Re: umountfs doesn't cleanly unmount / on reboot

2010-10-26 Thread Alex Engelmann
I often get the unmounting weak filesystems on shutdown or reboot, but
only rarely will it check the disks for errors on startup. It isn't
causing me any problems, as the system shuts down or reboots normally
otherwise. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.

[Bug 666033] Re: Size of contents in volume reported is incorrect, should be GB not TB.

2010-10-25 Thread Alex Engelmann
PS

I thought 129GB seemed excessive, as I only recently set up this system.
As it turns out, the size of the volume contents is NOT supposed to be
129GB, so it's a genuine error and not just a typo. According to the
system monitor, I'm only using 26.5GiB, which sounds about right.

[Bug 666033] [NEW] Size of contents in volume reported is incorrect, should be GB not TB.

2010-10-24 Thread Alex Engelmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is my first bug report, so I'll follow the format shown below.

1) I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, the amd64 version
2) The problem is in nautilus version 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1
3) Size of volume contents should be 129 GB
4) Size of volume contents is reported as 129 TB

The free space is correctly reported as 828.1GB. This problem happens
repeatedly, so it's not a one-time glitch. I'm sure fixing it is
trivial, but my programming experience is limited...
