[Bug 1208582] Re: [Lubuntu 13.10] Wrong GPG-Key at openprinting.org

2013-12-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
I agree with flickerfly - this completely broke installing my Xerox
Phaser 3250 printer on Xubuntu. The gutenprint installation pop-up just
sat there and with ps I saw two dpkg defunct processes sitting there
forever.

If this can't be fixed in the 13.10 release, a work-around should be
published so at least a solution can be found by googling.

[Bug 1008876] Re: plugin package broken

2012-09-04 Thread Antti Kaihola
As a novice Mercurial user I was also surprised that the `hggit =` line
mentioned at http://hg-git.github.com/ wouldn't enable the plugin, and I
needed either `git =` or `hgext.git =` instead.

[Bug 997645] [NEW] Installer crashed after failing to install bootloader

2012-05-10 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu 12.04 DVD amd64 installer could not install a bootloader
probably since I'm installing on a system which has RAID on it. I
installed mdadm manually before starting the installer.

In the error message window I opted for not trying to install a
bootloader at all. The window wouldn't go away, and eventually I clicked
on the close button in the titlebar, and the installer crashed.

I have the watermark in Ubuntu 11.04 with fglrx 2:8.840-0ubuntu4 and a

The exact version in the Catalyst Control Center is 8.84.6-110324a-

From /proc/cpuinfo:

Re #13: I removed the fglrx driver installed by Ubuntu and replaced it
with the 11.8 Catalyst driver directly from AMD. The watermark
disappeared and also it seems that some of the garbage I occasionally
got when running a rotated display are now gone.

[Bug 789376] [NEW] package nginx-extras 0.8.54-4 failed to install/upgrade: aliprosessi installed post-installation script palautti virhetilakoodin 1

2011-05-27 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nginx-extras

I initially installed nginx-extras successfully. At a later point I
noticed my /etc/nginx was missing, probably due to some messing around
with apt-get build-dep. Tried to install nginx-extras again and got this
error. Did an apt-get remove --purge nginx-extras and tried to install
again - same error.

After removing (with --purge) nginx-common as well, I was finally able
to reinstall nginx-extras.

[Bug 432309] Re: gtk.show_uri uses firefox, not what's configured into default apps for gnome

2011-02-28 Thread Antti Kaihola
I'm seeing this in a Lubuntu desktop session when using Terminator
0.95-0ubuntu1 and Chromium 9.0.597.94~r73967-0ubuntu0.10.10.1. My
/desktop/gcome/url-handlers/{http,https}/command settings are both
/usr/bin/chromium-browser %s, but Terminator still opens links in
Firefox.

Also, doing this in a terminal opens Firefox instead of Chromium:

python -c import gtk;gtk.show_uri(None,

[Bug 323866] Re: gnome-screensaver takes 100% cpu time

2010-12-18 Thread Antti Kaihola
I also still see this on my Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu 10.10. Unlocks after
waiting for approx. 2 minutes, gnome-screensaver eats ~99% CPU, unlocks
also if I drop to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and kill the
screensaver.

#181065 looks similar, also maybe #181065, #314545 and #524860.

[Bug 664968] Re: Maverick 10.10 Desktop i386 installer fails to boot from USB on Dell Mini 9 if an SD card is present

2010-11-04 Thread Antti Kaihola
delance,

The Dell Mini 9 doesn't have a CD-ROM drive.

Sure, the installation worked just fine after I removed the SD card. But
this will surely cause confusion to some users. I consider myself a very
experienced Linux user, but the solution wasn't obvious to me.

Maybe usb-creator could remind that *all* other mass media should be
removed when installing from a USB stick? Even better, the installer
itself could suggest that if it isn't able to proceed with installation.

[Bug 664968] Re: Maverick 10.10 Desktop i386 installer fails to boot from USB on Dell Mini 9

2010-10-24 Thread Antti Kaihola
Found the reason: I had forgotten that I had an SD card in the built-in
card reader slot. It's present as /dev/mmcblk0 in the attached
casper.log (from a boot with the debug= option).

Would it be possible for casper to detect which mass media device it was
originally booted? Apparently it currently just assumes the first one it
happens to encounter.

[Bug 664968] Re: Maverick 10.10 Desktop i386 installer fails to boot from USB on Dell Mini 9

2010-10-23 Thread Antti Kaihola
Nitesh,

Thanks for your instructions. Unfortunately they didn't help in my case,
see below for details. Based on all I've described, I'm curious to know
if this is a genuine bug in the Maverick ISO image or usb-creator-gtk,
or if my netbook or the USB stick is defective. I'll be happy to do
further experiments and debugging to find out the reason for this
behavior.

$ sudo blkid
/dev/sdb1: LABEL=MAVERICK UUID=091E-1A5F TYPE=vfat

(I set the label manually since it was gibberish after emptying the
stick with usb-creator-gtk.)

The directory /boot/grub.d didn't exist on the stick, there was just
/boot/grub/loopback.cfg. I created /boot/grub.d/40_custom with the
following content:

menuentry Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat {
  set root=(hd0,1)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=UUID=091E-1A5F ro quiet splash
  initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic
}

Booting off the USB stick still drops me into Busybox. The boot menu
still has the original five items.

The stick doesn't contain /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic nor
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic. Instead, there is a /casper
directory with:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola 38472 2010-10-23 11:45 filesystem.manifest
-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola 36500 2010-10-23 11:45
filesystem.manifest-desktop
-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola10 2010-10-23 11:45 filesystem.size
-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola 692674560 2010-10-23 11:47 filesystem.squashfs
-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola 11409807 2010-10-23 11:47 initrd.lz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 akaihola akaihola 4289584 2010-10-23 11:47 vmlinuz

The first item in /boot/grub/loopback.cfg is originally:

menuentry Try Ubuntu without installing {
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper
iso-scan/filename=${iso_path} quiet splash --
initrd /casper/initrd.lz
}

I inserted a new first item:

menuentry Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat {
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper
iso-scan/filename=${iso_path} root=UUID=091E-1A5F --
initrd /casper/initrd.lz
}

This didn't change the boot menu, and the stick still drops into
Busybox.

I also tried to tweak kernel options by hitting F6 in the boot menu and
interactively inserting root=UUID=091E-1A5F or root=/dev/sdb1 into the
kernel command line, but it had no effect.

While in Busybox, ls /dev/sd* reveals that the partition on the stick
indeed is /dev/sdb1.

[Bug 664968] [NEW] Maverick 10.10 Desktop i386 installer fails to boot from USB on Dell Mini 9

2010-10-22 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the 32-bit Desktop Edition .ISO for Ubuntu Maverick 10.10
and created a bootable USB stick with usb-creator-gtk on a 10.04 laptop.

The MD5 sum for the ISO image is 59d15a16ce90c8ee97fa7c211b7673a8 which
matches the one listed in the MD5SUMS file for
ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso.

The stick booted fine on the laptop (HP Compaq nx6310) and I was able to
install Maverick.

However, on my Dell Mini 9 the stick doesn't boot at all. Here is what happens:
- the hit a key for options icon is displayed at the bottom of the screen
- I can access the main menu and modify options normally
- when booting from the cd, the Ubuntu logo with dots below appears for a moment
  - sometimes the logo looks weird, as if displayed with characters in text mode
  - the exact appearance of the screen varies, e.g. sometimes the background is
magenta
- the netbook drops into busybox with the message:
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.

I've tried all the provided boot options (acpi=off etc.) as well as
memmap=1K#0x7f80 which was mentioned in a forum thread which was
about a different booting problem.

When unplugging my Dell Mini 9, often I get a message which tells a
correct charge percentage (e.g. 75%) but estimates remaining time at 1
minute. The laptop then hibernates (and freezes completely because of
the sleep/hibernate-with-SD-card-mounted bug).

Exactly the same behavior on Lucid Netbook on a Dell Mini 9 with a
1280x1024 external panel.

I don't have an ia32-libs package installed.

I have libqtcore4 4.6.1-1ubuntu2.

[Bug 525649] [NEW] bold and italic styles missing from the Beteckna TTF font

2010-02-22 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-beteckna

I installed the ttf-beteckna package in Lucid. Based on its contents, I
expect it to contain five styles of the font:

$ dpkg -L ttf-beteckna|grep '\.ttf'
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/beteckna/BetecknaLowerCase.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/beteckna/BetecknaLowerCaseBold.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/beteckna/BetecknaLowerCaseBoldCondensed.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/beteckna/BetecknaLowerCaseItalic.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/beteckna/BetecknaLowerCaseItalicCondensed.ttf

In OpenOffice, only BetecknaLowerCase is available in the font selection
drop-down.

In The GIMP, the following are available:
BetecknaLowerCase Medium
BetecknaLowerCase Medium
BetecknaLowerCase Medium
BetecknaLowerCase Medium Italic
BetecknaLowerCase Medium Italic

All the duplicates also look the same on the screen, so this is not a
naming issue.

[Bug 525649] Re: bold and italic styles missing from the Beteckna TTF font

2010-02-22 Thread Antti Kaihola
In OpenOffice, the bold and italic buttons appear to change the font
style, although I'm not a typography expert and can't verify that the
styles look correct.

In Inkscape all the styles are visible in the font dialog, and Medium Italic
appears to work correctly.
The bold styles do not affect most characters, but typing all possible
characters from I can get with my keyboard layout, surprisingly, the following
characters *do* appear in boldface: £þřœəĸš–žðŋµč
Also the euro-cent symbol in the example box of Inkscape's font selection
dialog turns into boldface.
None of the ASCII letters, digits or symbols seem to exist in the bold styles.

[Bug 524910] [NEW] [i945gme] Xorg crash on a netbook (Intel video): Segmentation fault at address 0x400007c

2010-02-20 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I was typing in Emacs and Xorg segfaulted. The keyboard and mouse didn't
work, and I had to hit Alt-SysRq-K to get back to the login screen.

I have an external display connected to the Mini 9 netbook, and I had
previously toggled the active displays back and forth with the Fn+8 keys
(over an hour before the segfault).

The netbook also suffers from bug #507813 and the symptoms were similar
this time as well, but the backtrace in Xorg.0.log.old is different.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crashes repeatedly on a netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-02-15 Thread Antti Kaihola
I've been seeing this a lot less recently, but it just happened again. I now

- xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu12

This time the mouse didn't work either. Alt-SysRq-K did return me to
GDM. The traceback was:

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crashes repeatedly on a netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-02-15 Thread Antti Kaihola
In a Fedora bug [1], the use of intel-gpu-tools to collect a ring/batch-
buffer dump was suggested when this crash occurs.

That package seems to be installed by default on Lucid. Would it make
sense to SSH in and attach the output of sudo intel_gpu_dump the next
time this happens?

[Bug 516548] [NEW] Xorg freeze, screen flickering

2010-02-03 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

During normal use (Emacs), for no apparent reason, both screens (netbook
+ external) go black with a blue-white approx. 10 px high stripe at the
top with horizontal stripes flickering all around the screen. No
response to mouse or keyboard, not even SysRq combinations.

No messages in logs indicating any problems in the kernel or Xorg at the
time of the freeze.

This was the first freeze after upgrading to:
- kernel 2.6.32-12-generic #16-Ubuntu SMP
- xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9
- xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-1ubuntu3

I've previously had freezes with no screen corruption:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/507813 but in those cases I always got stuff in the Xorg log
as described in that bug.

This is a Dell Mini 9 with Intel 945GME.

the

  acpi=off

kernel parameter. Unfortunately that's not a good work-around since
other essential functionality is lost.

[Bug 516446] [NEW] multihead setup changed on wake-up from suspend

2010-02-03 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When opening the netbook lid to wake up from suspend, the xinerama
multi-head setup is different than when closing the lid.

Example 1:

1. open gnome-display-properties
2. configure an external monitor to extend the desktop to the *right* from the
netbook screen
2. note that the panels are on the netbook screen
3. close the lid, wait until suspended, open the lid
4. netbook screen is off, desktop limited to external monitor with panels
visible there
5. hit Fn+8 to enable netbook screen
6. panels still on external monitor
7. external monitor is now to the *left* from the netbook screen
8. use gnome-display-properties to fix the layout

Example 2:

1. open gnome-display-properties
2. configure an external monitor to extend the desktop to the *right* from the
netbook screen
2. note that the panels are on the netbook screen
3. close the lid, wait until suspended, open the lid
4. netbook screen is off, desktop limited to external monitor with panels
visible there
5. open gnome-display-properties
6. netbook screen is automatically enabled (before interacting with
gnome-display-properties)
7. panels move to netbook screen
8. external monitor is now to the *left* from the netbook screen
9. use gnome-display-properties to fix the layout

This is Lucid up-to-date as of 2010-02-03 with xserver-xorg-core
2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9, running on a Dell Mini 9 with an external BenQ
1280x1024 VGA LCD panel.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crashes repeatedly on a netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-23 Thread Antti Kaihola
Two days ago I got the following updates
- xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9
- kernel 2.6.32-11-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP

Xorg still crashed today. I returned to the netbook after it had been
idle for a couple of hours. I hit Fn-8 to disable the secondary display.
The netbook screen flashed when I hit the key kombination for a few
times. The mouse was still moving, but then the keyboard stopped
responding at all. Had to power down the computer.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-20 Thread Antti Kaihola
Upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32-10-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP. Also xserver-
xorg-input-evdev got upgraded to 1:2.3.2-3 yesterday. Now the symptoms
changed a little bit (so far only one freeze after the upgrade):

When I hit Alt-SysRq-K after the freeze, I got a hard lock-up with a
frozen mouse cursor on a black screen. All SysRq keys non-functional,
had to power off.

Also, for some reason time offsets are now missing from
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:

/var/lib/xkb/server-17A65304EB1C7E1E981E40EF0F1F724A1C2CEC3A.xkm

[Bug 509509] [NEW] non-default color theme corrupted after gnome-settings-daemon restart

2010-01-19 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In Lucid (up-to-date as of 2010-01-17, gnome-terminal 2.28.1-1ubuntu1),
whenever gnome-settings-daemon dies, the color theme of open Gnome-
Terminal sessions changes, as expected. The colors change to black on
light gray (#dcdad5), which apparently is Gnome-Terminal's own default.

One would expect the colors to change back when gnome-settings-daemon is
started again.

However, the colors don't change back to what is set in the profile.
Instead I get a strange dark gray (#1a1a1a) on light pink (#e6ddd5)
color theme.

Selecting another color theme and switching back to the original in
Profile Preferences does fix the colors back to normal.

This is especially annoying as I've changed the default system color theme to
the Gray on black built-in theme in Gnome-Terminal. In this case the colors
are
- gray on light gray after gnome-settings-daemon dies
- gray on light pink after gnome-settings-daemon is restarted

Due to this bug I've noticed that it's not rare for gnome-settings-
daemon to restart. It does that when gnome packages are updated (very
often at this point in Lucid), and sometimes for no apparent reason.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-18 Thread Antti Kaihola
I verified that the crash/freeze occurs also when Gnome-Do is not
running. I initially suspected it could be the cause since the symptom
appeared shortly after I started using Gnome-Do, but today it happened
without it.

Also, this also happens when the computer is not idle for an extended
time. Once yesterday and once this morning while using the browser
actively.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-18 Thread Antti Kaihola
Geir,

I'm unsure if this is a crash or a freeze. The
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze page is confusing: It
claims that a backtrace is a non-symptom, but lists [mi] EQ
overflowing and X freeze as a relevant problem.

In this case I'm getting both a backtrace and [mi] EQ overflowing.

[Bug 508657] [NEW] ubuntu-bug linux refuses: kernel not a genuine Ubuntu package

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I'm trying to report a kernel bug with the command:

$ ubuntu-bug linux

The tool asks a series of questions, and I answer No, No, Yes,
regression-potential, No, This has only happened once,
respectively.

After answering the questions, apport presents the following dialog:

  Problem in linux-image-2.6.32-9-ge
  The problem cannot be reported:
This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

(the title is too wide for the window and the window can't be resized)

I'm running Lucid, up-to-date on 2010-01-16.

Related bug reports:

* Bug #391799:
ubuntu-bug -p linux fails to file a bug report against kernel package
In this case, I'm *not* using the -p option

* Bug #443961
Given that ubuntu-bug is now needed for all bug reports, non-genuine
packages should be allowed.

[Bug 448994] Re: modemmanager hangs boot process

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
I upgraded all packages on Lucid yesterday (2010-01-16) on a Dell Mini
9. Next time on power-up the machine froze after only these messages on
the console:

[...the sda1 check message...]
modem-manager: Loaded plugin MotoC
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Gobi
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Generic
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Option High-Speed
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Huawei
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Sierra

modem-manager: Loaded plugin ZTE
modem-manager: Loaded plugin Nokia

I rebooted with Alt-SysRq-B and the system booted up normally.

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
This is still an issue with Lucid upgraded up-to-date on 2010-01-17.
Cold booting or even removing the battery before power-up doesn't help
at all.

I also tried activating the Broadcom STA driver instead, but it just
drops into a blank console and hard freezes before succeeding with the
activation.

This is a Dell Mini 9 netbook.

[Bug 508741] [NEW] maximus usability suffers when external display is connected

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: maximus

When I connect an external 1280x1024 LCD panel to my netbook, the window
manager works in an unintuitive way:

The desktop is extended to the external display as expected.

If I move the mouse cursor to the external display after clicking on an
application which is maximized on startup (e.g. Firefox on my system),
the application launches maximized on the external display, but the
window title is still on the netbook display. Netbook-launcher is also
dimmed.

If I click on the netbook display to interact with netbook-launcher, all
applications on the external displays are hidden.

I would expect applications windows to stay open and non-dimmed on one
display when others are focused on the other.

This is Lucid Netbook Edition installed from Alpha 1, up-to-date as of
2010-01-17, with maximus 0.4.14-0ubuntu3 and netbook-launcher
2.1.12-0ubuntu4.

[Bug 245219] Re: Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
Teej, as M. Vefa pointed out, the problem is not in the distribution but
on the Ubuntu HTTP servers.

The Content-Encoding header mentioned by Bob Drzyzgula in the original
report seems to be gone now.

However, Content-Type is now application/x-gzip which is incorrect for a
PGP signature. I haven't tested upgrading through a proxy recently, but
it's still possible that this header could break that.

It looks like mod_mime matches extensions in the middle of a file name
if the final extension is unknown. This explains why for files with a
.tar.gz.gpg extension, the Ubuntu servers used to indicate a gzip
encoding and a tar content type, and why they now return a gzip content
type.

Here is what the Ubuntu servers currently reply:

[Bug 245219] Re: Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding

2010-01-17 Thread Antti Kaihola
I think this should be added to Apache's /etc/apache2/mods-available/mime.conf:
AddType application/pgp-signature .gpg

I tried this on my Debian Squeeze -based server and sure enough,
.tar.gz.gpg files are now served with the application/pgp-signature
content type. This needs to be tested though by creating an Ubuntu
repository mirror and upgrading from it through a proxy.

On the other hand, maybe a wrong Content-Type doesn't matter and the
removal of the Content-Encoding header already fixed the issue.

[Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-16 Thread Antti Kaihola
Just happened again on the same netbook I originally reported about. I
left it idle for about 50 minutes. When I returned, I launched two short
scripts with Gnome-Do and then tried to interact with Google Calendar
which was open on the screen. Same symptoms: mouse does move the cursor,
but clicks and keypresses don't work.

What can I do to help? Try another kernel? Xorg-edgers? Enable some
debugging?

Here's what I have in Xorg.0.log.old this time (very similar to the original

[Bug 229259] Re: gnome keyboard shortcuts ignore layout changes

2010-01-16 Thread Antti Kaihola
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 196277 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/196277

I can't see how this is a duplicate of bug #196277.

If I understood correctly, this bug is about user-configurable keyboard
shortcuts not working correctly after switching layouts.

Bug #196277 is about the layout switching keys not working when using
automatic login.

[Bug 507813] [NEW] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-14 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I had left my Dell Mini 9 open and switched on, and when I returned to it
several hours later:
- the mouse moved
- no response to clicks
- no response to typing
- screen ok, no corruption
- no Caps Lock blinking
- no suspend/resume done after last power-up
- I had Firefox, emacs-snapshot and the Gnome Terminal open.

I killed X with Alt-SysRq-K. The log for the crashed session is in
Xorg.0.log.old.

I have connected a 1280x1024 LCD panel to the VGA connector and my
desktop is extended there. I have disabled desktop effects.

This is the first time I see this lock-up although I've left the netbook
idle for several times during the two weeks I've been using Lucid.

It seems that libdrm-intel and xorg (but not xserver-org-video-intel)
got updated three days ago. I can't think of any other recent
significant changes to the system. I have gnome-do running. The
screensaver is set to empty screen in 5 minutes.

[Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)

2010-01-13 Thread Antti Kaihola
On my Lucid Alpha 1 (clean install, up-to-date as of today) I can't find
any menu items which would trigger the described error messages.

ankspo71, was this a fresh install or an upgrade?

You could take a look at /usr/share/desktop-directories and
~/.local/share/desktop-directories/ and verify that they contain files
with the .directory extension.

Do you get the exception also when trying to open properties of a
launcher (not a folder)? If so, the exception should be a bit different.

You could add the statement:
print file_path
above line 377 (and indented similarly to the surrounding lines) of
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/Alacarte/MainWindow.py and see what file paths
Alacarte prints out when you click on the Properties button. It looks like
some of the file names lack an extension and cause the exception you described.
