openjdk-8-jre is no longer installable for i386 on noble. Missing
dependency on libatk-wrapper-java-jni. This library still exists for
amd64, but not for i386.

[Bug 1950095] Re: [github] 20.04: Apt fails to download URLs with non-encoded querystrings

2022-05-24 Thread Bart Groeneveld
I have used TJ's ppa for some months, and it worked flawlessly. Thanks
TJ!

Unfortunately, Ubuntu released 2.0.8 for focal, which overwrites 2.0.6.2 from
TJ's ppa.
Therefore, I created my own ppa[1]. My ppa is based on 2.0.8 and includes the
same fixes as TJ's ppa.

I've just tested it while updating the linux-surface kernel for one of
my surface devices, and it worked as expected.

I expect to maintain the ppa as long I use focal myself, which I expect
to be at least one year from now, and possibly longer.

[Bug 1964373] [NEW] Dell latitude e65640 touchpad and display problem.

2022-03-09 Thread bart stan
Public bug reported:

After upgrade from Ubuntu 18 to 20, touch-pad and display stop working
correctly. touchepad works only from time to time, but I can't find
pattern why. On the other hand display just after upgrade worked
correctly, but lately I have to work in recovery mode because on normal
drivers refreshing is terrible and from time to time display turn black
and it is impossible to switch it to normal mode.

[Bug 1732482] Re: [snap] doesn't properly save desktop files for "create shortcuts" action

2020-10-31 Thread Bart Janssens
The workaround is only part of the solution, the link still opens as a
tab in regular chromium window rendering it useless. PWA's are still
broken for now since they are supposed to launch as a separate
'application' they way it works in the non-snap version of chromium.

** Description changed:

- When I install 20.04 desktop, the try ubuntu mechanism works fine with

- (using all default settings) the system boots, I see a blank colored
- screen, but I cannot move the mouse pointer and I do not see a login.
+ When I install 20.04 desktop, "try ubuntu" works fine with my AST2400
+ graphics and LG display. When I then install on my hard disk (using all
+ default settings) the system boots, I see a blank colored screen, but I
+ cannot move the mouse pointer and I do not see a login.

Update: an install that does not require a login works. The problem
appears to be to install requiring the user to log in.
+
+ Update: After installing without requiring a login, I can enable login
+ in settings and this then works correctly on reboot. The problem appears
+ to be isolated to how the system is installed with a required login. The

[Bug 1878933] [NEW] Lock screen ignores user input for a few seconds after "Please try again" message

2020-05-15 Thread Bart Schuurmans
Public bug reported:

When I try to unlock my PC from the lock screen, I sometimes enter the
wrong password. After checking the password (which takes ~1s), the lock
screen displays the following message:

"Sorry, that didn't work. Please try again."

For ~2s after that, keyboard input is ignored, which means that if you
start typing you password immediately after reading the "try again"
prompt, the first few characters are discarded and your password is
incorrect again.

This is a bad user experience, and I'm not sure what the purpose of the
delay is.

[Bug 1877939] [NEW] Unwanted desktop panning when using two displays

2020-05-11 Thread Bart Schuurmans
Public bug reported:

I use two displays. One has a resolution of 3840x2160, and another one
is to the right of that with a resolution of 1080x1920 in "Portrait
Left" mode. I use "Join Displays" in Settings > Displays.

When I configure this setup using Settings > Displays, my main desktop
ends up being too big, extending to the secondary monitor to the right.
When I move my mouse to the right edge of the secondary screen, the
desktop pans.

When I arrange the secondary monitor to the left of my main display,
this bug does not occur.

Slightly different ba might have the same origin:

If I right-klick in a Firefox window, windows from other workspaces are
shown in the background of the current workspace.

These windows are "inactive" except for the titlebar

[Bug 1655111] Re: LibVirt Apparmor profile has qemu-bridge-helper listed in the wrong directory

2020-01-29 Thread Bart Staal
I'm using qemu-bridge-helper already for a while. Since updating to
19.10 libvirtd suddenly refused to start my VMs. Turned out to be caused
by apparmor, I found these log messages:

audit: type=1400 audit(1580253669.262:100): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="file_inherit" profile="libvirtd//qemu_bridge_helper" pid=5629

For me the following change below the issue. I've barely any idea what I'm
doing, never wrote apparmor profiles before. So probably this patch needs a bit
of fine-tuning.

[Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.

2019-12-22 Thread Bart
Problem as described by topic starter also appeared on two computers of mine:
1) An old laptop (Core2Duo and Nvidia GTX260M), that uses Ubuntu from 2015
onwards.
2) A newer desktop (Corei5, Intel graphics card), which started with Ubuntu
19.04. Performed the release upgrade one week after the laptop.
What these two computers have in common, and in common with the other poster:
automatic login.
My fix followed the steps of https://askubuntu.com/a/346795 (resume after
failed release upgrade):
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade
$ reboot

It's an error that probably scares new users, so idd, I think it should
receive high priority.

[Bug 1829159] Re: on-disk documentation is not accessible

2019-07-21 Thread Bart
I have the same problem on a machine where I installed Ubuntu 19.04. On
an older machine, which is updated to Ubuntu 19.04 this problem does not
occur. So I believe on the older machine the file was copied correctly
when initially installing octave.

Execute octave once with sudo seems to fix the problem for some people:
https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?321255-Gnu-Octave-quot-Could-not-copy-help-collection-to-temporary-file-quot
I have not yet tested this though, I am hoping the bug is resolved with an
octave update.

[Bug 1820685] Re: Wrong resolution during boot

2019-03-19 Thread Bart van Pelt
After some reading on internet I decided yesterday to install the nvidia
diverse in package nvidia-driver-390. This resulted in a non-working
graphic display. So I had to restore my installed packages and remove
the nvidia-driver-390 package.

When rebooting the initial screen showed the expected graphic resolution
instead of a terminal like screen.

I still don't quite understand what happened.
nvidia-settings? or graphic card which has gotten wrong commands from previous
installed driver?

Re: [Bug 805204] Re: smb:NAS correct, terminal with NAS shows empty NAS

2018-07-17 Thread Bart Houkes
It's no problem at the moment. I face much worse problems wiith latest
versions of ubuntu...

e.g. PP1455 (look on internet) cannot detect internal Wifi.

PP1455 cannot use RFID sensor from Akam.nl

PP1455 has totally no Audio.

Many times there is a system errror... my business has to use 14.04, it
is more stable than later versions.

ALL users with 16.04 and 18.04 have problems and some want their money
back.

I am a small company and may go bankrupt thankt to Ubuntu...
www.kassaku.nl send you greetings.

[Bug 1780056] [NEW] pdf print issue

2018-07-04 Thread Bart Goeman
Public bug reported:

I have a several pdfs (all invoices from the same sender) that do not print
correctly from evince.
On screen it renders fine.
It seems a whole background layer (not sure if the pdf uses layers) is missing.

The print is wrong when I print to my printer (HP M426fdn, a laser
multifunctional on the local network), but also when I print-to-file
(pdf format) from evince

When I print to my printer using other means (FoxitReader or directly
with lpr) the output is correct.

I will attach the original pdf and the output from print-to-file pdf format.
E.g. the header at the top right is dropped by evince

[Bug 1774843] Re: apport python exception handler messes up python3.7

2018-06-07 Thread Bart Goeman
well my reasoning was slightly different from supported/unsupported
i am not familiar with the exact scope of the apport project,
but I assume the goal is to collect info on ubuntu packages, not any unrelated
code,
and since afaik all packages one one release all use the same (system) python
version( i.e. 3.6 for bionic),
-> code running under any other python is of no interest anyhow
-> it only makes sense to install the apport exception hook for that python
version,

[Bug 1774843] [NEW] apport python exception handler messes up python3.7

2018-06-03 Thread Bart Goeman
Public bug reported:

it seems apport installs an exception hook whenever running python3.
This hook is apparently installed for python3.7 too.
This exception handler has a dependency on apt_pkg, which is a binary that is
not compatible with python3.7 it seems (you can't import it, see below)

As a result, whenever I run a python3.7 script and run into an exception (which
happens often when writing code), I get an additional exception in the
exception handler + a copy of the original exception, so three stacktraces in
total.
A solution would be to only install the exception hook for the system python
i.e. python3.6

[Bug 1762033] [NEW] X BadWindow error when attemtping to create a window with unsupported OpenGL attributes

2018-04-07 Thread Bart van Strien
Public bug reported:

When trying to create a window with unsupported OpenGL attributes,
instead of failing gracefully (and then being able to try with a new set
of attributes), an X error occurs instead, terminating the program. The
error looks like this:

X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 4 (X_DestroyWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 154
Current serial number in output stream: 156

This was a known bug in SDL2 that has been fixed in this commit:
https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL/rev/2088cd828335

Only artful ships a package that is impacted by the bug, other ubuntu
versions ship either an SDL2 version that is older, or a version that
contains the fix. Would it be possible to backport the fix to the artful
package?

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-29 Thread Bart Companies
I am truly sorry Locutus but I have no interest in pursuing this bug any
further: my issues were fully addressed and my rig is back to full
functionality (and I more a of "an advanced user" than a developer of OS
software and/or apps).

I think you ought to contact them directly. Even if you are not a Linux
Mint user, you can still create a user account at the Linux Mint forums
and interact with the Mint development teams, especially Clem (Mint's
team leader), and ask them to address your specific interests.

Goodbye!

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-28 Thread Bart Companies
Hi, Locutus

I went to the Mint forums and there is already a thread open on the
virtualbox-guest-utils package and yes, it seems that the issue was
related to a "buggy" virtualbox-guest-utils.

The issue was solved on Mint 18.x by the removal of the said package
triggered by updating the Update Manager to v.5.2.1.2.

This buggy package was deemed not necessary for desktop computers
running Mint 18.x versions (including running Mint as the host OS in
Oracle VirtualBox). A comment on this thread by Clem (Mint's Team
Leader) can be found here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47=266431=1449369=virtualbox+guest+utils#p1449369

For people running Mint 18.x as the guest OS the best fix so far is
still to downgrade the package from v.5.1 to the v.5.0 version of this
package by running on the Terminal on the guest side the command "sudo
apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils=5.0.18-dfsg-2build1", as simply
removing the virtualbox-guest-utils package will also remove the "extra"
functionalities such as USB 3 support on the guest OS. This package
downgrade is of course only successful in downgrading the package via
the above command if the older v.5.0.x version was not manually purged
from the cached install packages on the guest OS.

The same command via the Terminal can also be used by people running
Mint 18.x without VirtualBox or running Mint 18.x as their guest OS and
who affected by this bug and who cannot launch Synaptic and the Update
Manager (and thus cannot upgrade the Update Manager to trigger the
removal of the buggy package). After downgrading the package and cold
rebooting the rig the removal of this buggy package should be triggered
after the refresh of the availables updates through the Update Manager,
thus solving the issue.

Regarding the cause of the conflicts crashing multiple processes with
this buggy package, my impression is that Clem and the rest of the Mint
Team did not even want to delve too deep, which I also agree would be
counterproductive and a waste of time and brains to try to fix a package
which is not required other than people running the Mint 18.x OS as a
guest (and for whom downgrading the package is an effective, reliable,
simple and fast fix).

[Bug 1759584] [NEW] displayport MST on intel graphics: slave monitor does not wake up from suspend

2018-03-28 Thread Bart Goeman
Public bug reported:

configuration:
- PC with Intel HD Graphics 630 (i5-7600)
- DELL U2415 monitor connected to displayport port on PC
(/sys/class/drm/card0/card0-DP-5)
- DELL U2412M connected to DELL U2415 (/sys/class/drm/card0/card0-DP-6)

After a suspend/wake up cycle, the first monitor wakes up but the slave
(U2412M) does not.
When I query /sys/class/drm/card0/card0-DP-5 and
/sys/class/drm/card0/card0-DP-6 when DELLU2412M has failed to wake up, they
both have enabled:enabled and status:connected

i am not sure if this is an xserver issue or a kernel driver issue.
On the one hand i have similar issues using Wayland instead of xserver.
On the other hand, this workaround for a similar issue on nvida works:
"xset dpms force off" which I found here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/854754/monitor-stays-in-sleep-when-daisy-chained-via-displayport

If this works, it seems to be something under control of the xserver?
Issuing "xset dpms force off" works, produces no logging in /var/log

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-27 Thread Bart Companies
[ANSWER REGARDING COMMENT # 05 FROM LocutusOfBorg]

Hi Locutus

Yes, I was able to install v.5.1.34 and from the deb packages from
Oracle's website when I migrated to Mint 17 and later to Mint 18.1.
Although the VirtualBox program itself installs and loads alright and I
could build a new VM under it, the Virtual Machines I already got simply
refuses to starts under any VirtualBox v.5.1 or v.5.2 version (I built
these VM's at the time I was still using Linux Mint 13 Xfce some four
years ago!). Since I invested a lot of money and specially a lot of time
building these VM's, rebuilding them from scratch on VirtualBox v.5.1 or
v.5.2 is something I am not contemplating to do right now. I may be
forced to rebuild them some years in the future when I migrate to a
newer Mint version down the road if the v.5.0 version does not work
under that future Mint version (although I think that unlikely).

Thanks anyway for your concern: it is deeply appreciated.

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-27 Thread Bart Companies
Hi, LocutusOfBorg

Is your request above (about "notify-send") for me or for user
"kolokolovorot"?

If your request is directed to me, please remember that with yesterday's
Mint Update Manager update to v.5.2.1.2 the said package "virtualbox-
guest-utils" was removed from my system. While running any VM, Task
Manager no longer lists this package as a running process and my VM's
are performing flawlessly, including all "extras" (such as USB 3 support
on the guest side) that were installed via the said package.

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-27 Thread Bart Companies
Hi, LocutusOfBorg, how are you?

Regarding your question I downloaded the .deb file directly from
Oracle's VirtualBox webpage at
https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.40/

I originally installed the deb package for Ubuntu 14.04
(https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.40/virtualbox-5.0_5.0.40-115130~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb)
when I installed Linux Mint Xfce 17 64-bit (some two years when I
migrated from Linux Mint Xfce 13) and suceeded in using virtual machines
I developed for my own needs (a Windows XP SP3 32-bit, a Windows 7.1
32-bit, a Windows 8 64-bit and a FreeBSD x86-64) as the version
available from the Mint repositories failed to launch any of these VM's.

When I moved from Linux Mint 17 to Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce 64-bit (again a
fresh installation from scratch) the VirtualBox version available from
the repositories failed (again) to launch any of my VM's and so
proceeded to install the Ubuntu 16.4 available from Oracle
(https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.40/virtualbox-5.0_5.0.40-115130~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64.deb)
and again was able to run my VM's flawlessly.

So you see Locutus, I can't update my rig to the latest VirtualBox
version, either the one from Mint's repositories or the one from
Oracle's website.

By the way, the Mint Update Manager was updated yesterday to version
5.2.1.2 and this update automatically triggered the removal of the
virtualbox-guest-utils package, but my VM's are still running alright
after I rebooted my rig afterwards (and on Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x this
package is installed automatically when the OS is installed and were
loaded at boot time regardless of VirtualBox being or not installed on
that particular system).

Hope this info was helpful. Have a nice day.

[Bug 1758946] [NEW] virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-26 Thread Bart Companies
Public bug reported:

- Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce 64-bit
- Oracle VirtualBox v.5.0.40 r115130
- Package: virtualbox-guest-utils
  -- Older version: 5.0.18-dfsg-2build1
  -- Newer version: 5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2

Description of Events:

(a) Immediately after updating the package virtualbox-guest-utils (via
Update Manager, configured to show and install only level 1, 2 and 3
packages and with no other packages being updated simmultaneously) a
warning window started popping up saying something like "the indicator
app has left the panel more than 60 times in the last second" and
hitting the reload button had no effect other than reloading the same
warning window.

(b) All icons loaded via the indicator app (Update Manager, weather app,
qBittorrent and Thunderbird) disappeared from the panel.

(b) The XScreenSaver (v.5.34) stopped loading the sole configured module
GLSlideshow slideshow of my photos, showing only a blank black screen,
although moving the mouse returned me to my desktop.

(c) The following programs stopped working immediately and could not be started
via its respective icons from the Whisker Menu:
- Synaptic
- Update Manager
- Mozilla Firefox
- Mozilla Thunderbird
- VirtualBox

(d) A cold reboot of the computer did not solve the issues above and the
same warning window started popping up again.

(e) Downgrading the package from the terminal (via the command "sudo
apt-get install virtualbox-guest-utils=5.0.18-dfsg-2build1") and cold
rebooting the rig returned my computer to full functionality.

P.S.: tried to submit the proper package tag (virtualbox-guest-utils)
but it there was an error message stating ""virtualbox-guest-utils" does
not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package" so I chose the
closest related one "virtualbox" from the pull-down menu on the bug
submission form.

[Bug 1731184] [NEW] Cannot get dropbox to work, ubuntu 17.10

2017-11-09 Thread Bart van Herk
Public bug reported:

I have a problem with dropbox in the last 4 versions of ubuntu: it won run. I
can install; then when I want to start it, I get
bart@bart-Inspiron-545:~$ dropbox start
Starting Dropbox...
The Dropbox daemon is not installed!
Run "dropbox start -i" to install the daemon

so I do: and I get box downloading and installing the daemon, then:

bart@bart-Inspiron-545:~$ dropbox start -i
Starting Dropbox...Done!

But then if I type
>dropbox start

I again get

Starting Dropbox...
The Dropbox daemon is not installed!
Run "dropbox start -i" to install the daemon

I have tried uninstalling everything and starting from scratch,
installing from the command line, installing from the dropbox website,
installing from package manager... nothing works. On my other ubuntu
17.10 laptop, no problems.

[Bug 1685442] Re: Errors: flip_done timed out during boot-up; slow boot

2017-07-19 Thread Bart Anderson
I installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 (with no updates) onto hard disk. After
reboot, I could log in, but the computer hung. Afte a second reboot, I
logged in and the computer seemd to work okay. I entered the command
"apport-collect 1685442" as requested. Then I entered the command a
second time, since I wasn't sure it worked (I had gotten warning
messages). Sorry if this made things comfusing.

I will load all updates now.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

[Bug 1685442] WifiSyslog.txt

apport information

** Attachment added: "WifiSyslog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1685442/+attachment/4917401/+files/WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

I had been running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on many laptop computers (especially
  Dell D620, D630, E6400) with no problem.

I created a Live USB with Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS and tried it on a Dell
D630. It was very slow to boot up (about 90 seconds) as opposed to the
30-45 seconds it usually takes. For a few seconds there were error
messages that included the phrase "flip_done timed out".

When the Ubuntu desktop appeared, the mouse cursor hung for a while, but
then came back to life. I didn't do much testing from there. I did a
Live session with the 16.04.2 LTS on a different D630 laptop, and the
  same problem occureed.

I Googled the problem, and found several hits.
  -
On an Arch forum, someone reported the problem on a Dell D630, like mine. It
also occured on other laptops:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218581

The suggestion was that the bug was related to kernel version 4.8.x and
the 965GM chipset, which is what the D630 has.

So I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 on a Dell D620 (with a 945GM chipset) and the
problem DID NOT occur.
  ---
For a similar boot-up problem, Ubuntu Forum suggested going back to an
earlier version of Ubuntu.
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2348892

I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (with the 4.4.0-31-generic kernel), and the
  problem did NOT occur.

So I'm solving the problem for myself by using Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 LTS rather
than 16.04.2.
