the package to the Linux kernel, and did not give us any explanations on
what would be broken.

[Bug 1868138] Re: 18.04LTS upgrade of grub-common:amd64 FAILs in post-install; incorrectly REWRITES user's /etc/default/grub

2020-03-20 Thread C de-Avillez
"This bug report is missing data. The reproducer given is invalid, as it
escapes the quoted string, as opposed to the newline."

Yes, it is broken, and it was my fault. I typed the lines instead of
copy I apologise. But, as the poster themselves confirm just
after this, it does break if the '\"´ is changed to '\'.

"It also does not show that this is a regression in the 8.15 upload, as
nothing in that upload changed."

OK. It is a regression on the 8.13 upload. But it is STILL a regression.
Or is it the rule that if we do not find a regression when a package is
released, then it is not a regression anymore?

[Bug 1868138] Re: 18.04LTS upgrade of grub-common:amd64 FAILs in post-install; incorrectly REWRITES user's /etc/default/grub

2020-03-19 Thread C de-Avillez
This is a regression

Marking triaged, easily reproducible:

*BEFORE* dist-upgrade:

1. edit /etc/default/grub
2. change GRUB_COMLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT from:
 GRUBCMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
   to:
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet \"
splash"
3. run a dist-upgrade

Expected result: update-grub/install completes successfully

Actual result: update-grub fails (or apt fails), because
/etc/default/grub now has a mangled GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
splash"

I am setting importance to medium because it will only impact users with
continuation lines.

[Bug 1861540] [NEW] typo in man page

2020-01-31 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

"respectively" is wrongly spelled:

-l Used to specify that nc should listen for an incoming
connection rather than initiate a connection to a remote host. The
destination and port to listen on can be specified either as non-
optional arguments, or with options -s and -p *respctively*.

This is corrected on 19.10 onwards at least; but given this is on an LTS
release, opening the bug.

Found and reported by "sabrina" via email.

So, no more kernel panics, but
  (1) still no kdump saved;
  (2) the servers end waiting for user intervention (which is quite bad for a
cloud instance).

Both servers had a cmdline with "crashkernel=512M-:192M". I edited
/etc/default/grub.d/kdump-tools.cfg, changed crashkernel to 256M, and
ran update-grub.

Re-tested, and it worked.

[Bug 1826585] Re: I can't update, upgrade or autoremove

2019-04-26 Thread C de-Avillez
OK. I see you have corrected the system date.

Two points here:

1. you should use 'apt full-upgrade'. There is a difference in behaviour
between 'upgrade' and 'full-upgrade'. the following is an excerpt from
'man apt':

   upgrade (apt-get(8))
upgrade is used to install available upgrades of all packages
currently installed on the system from the sources configured via
sources.list(5). New packages will be installed if required to satisfy
dependencies, but existing
packages will never be removed. If an upgrade for a package requires
the removal of an installed package the upgrade for this package isn't
performed.

   full-upgrade (apt-get(8))
full-upgrade performs the function of upgrade but will remove
currently installed packages if this is needed to upgrade the system as a whole.

2. it is apt-cache, not apt-caShe. And 'apt-cache show' requires at least one
package name -- see 'man apt-cache' for details.

[Bug 1826585] Re: I can't update, upgrade or autoremove

2019-04-26 Thread C de-Avillez
Hello Randy,

First of all, you opened the bug (and the question) less than 30 minutes
ago, and complained about not receiving a response seven minutes later.
It is unrealistic to expect a response that fast. It might take *many*
hours -- or days -- to get a response.

Secondly, this does not seem to be a bug in the software.

Thirdly, it would be better to report a bug against a specific package,
as opposed to "Ubuntu". You could do that by running 'ubuntu-bug
'. For example, in your case, 'apt' looks like a good fit (and,
if it is wrong, one of us will correct as needed. But ubuntu-bug will
also give us much more data on what your system is (and about the
package you selected).

The errors reported indicate the release files in the three repositories
point to a date *in the future*:

"Release file for
http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/bionic/InRelease is NOT VALID
YET [my upcase] (invalid for another 437d 23h 36min 34s). Updates for
this repository will not be applied.

So, I wonder... what is the *current* date on this machine (running
"date" on the command line will tell you)? It looks like your machine
clock is incorrect.

I will keep this bug as INCOMPLETE for a while, but -- right now -- I
tend to NOTABUG.

Cheers,

..C..

[Bug 1556302] Re: Ubuntu patch to add HOME to env_keep makes custom commands vulnerable by default

2019-04-18 Thread C de-Avillez
I think the Ubuntu patch has been obsoleted by common usage now, with
pretty much all distros using upstream version (of *not* keeping HOME).

Removing the patch would lower the delta we carry; additionally there is
the benefit of having Ubuntu behave as everybody else, lowering the
easter-egg count of weird differences between distros.

Given 19.04 has been released, we should remove for u+1. This will give
us enough time to find out and clean unsafe usage (if any).

Setting Confirmed/Medium.

[Bug 1824688] Re: date+%-Y -d "- N years" errors when N > 111

2019-04-16 Thread C de-Avillez
Further exchange on https://debbugs.gnu.org/35289 suggests this is a
libc6 problem, not a coreutils/date one.

Assaf Gordon (upstream) provided a test that can be run (attached here
are inv-year.c). If it fails on the mktime() call, then it is not
'date', but libc6.

I also found that setting TZ=UTC seems to bypass the problem; in my
primary test machine, TZ was unset (but I was still getting a failure).
Setting TZ to UTC, or an invalid value, works. Setting
TZ=America/Chicago fails (perhaps related to DST?):

[Bug 1824565] Re: I'm just trying to make my compouter more stable.

2019-04-12 Thread C de-Avillez
Hello,

I am sorry, but this is NOT a bug. It seems you are unhappy with some
programs/packages you have installed (either by yourself, or
automatically), but it is not at all clear what, where, why, and how.

Right now this sounds much more like usage issues than actual bugs (a
bug is an error in a package or program). Even it this is an actual bug,
you have not added anything that could allow us to triage and determine
issues.

As such, I am closing this bug as INVALID.

Cheers,

[Bug 1807797] Re: Split doesn't check for filetype

2019-01-18 Thread C de-Avillez
First of all, I apologise for the delay.

Given what upstream, below, answered, I am closing this bug WONTFIX.
Please contact Coreutils upstream at coreut...@gnu.org for more details.

In general, changes to Coreutils code should be submitted upstream.
Distro-wise, we very rarely deviate from upstream (and, for Coreutils
and many of the Ubuntu packages, from Debian).

Cheers,

A summary other mailing-list readers:

The "filetype" in question is regular files vs fifo / char devices /
block /devices.

The four requests all say something like:

==

"Sort like many other applications does not check for file types of the
inputs that are passed in as arguments. [...] For example, sorting files
that of type block/character/fifo does not make much sense as it will
just hang or use up all cpu cycles. "

==

> what upstream thinks about that.

First and foremost,
I think these are not bugs, and this is perfectly valid behavior.
If a user wants to process a non-regular file, they can do so.

The reasoning of "wasting" CPU/memory can be just as valid to
processing arbitrary large binary files.

---

Also,
Few observations:
1. These four issues were reported by different people (all new
LaunchPad users), during very short time period (second week of
december).

2. Three out of the four link to this
document, which explains about different file types as part of what
looks like a sys-call exerciser:
https://github.com/pkmoore/rrapper/blob/master/anomalies/weird_filetypes.md

3. The above document mention but does not explain what "S_IFSOCK" is,
and (perhaps as a result) none of their patches deals with S_IFSOCK
(despite that everything said about char-devices and fifos applies
to sockets as well).

4. Rejecting FIFOs as input indicates the submitters have some lack of
familiarity with unix command-line.

Given all the above,
I suspect this is part of a homework exercise given to students at some
college, perhaps something like "find bugs in an free software project
and submit a patch to them".

While good intentioned, these suggestions should be rejected as
"wontfix".

For any students or potential contributers who want to start working on
GNU coreutils - PLEASE write to coreut...@gnu.org and introduce
yourself, and we will easily provide ideas on useful contributions
that would be accepted.

Of course, the above is just my opinion, and others are welcomed
to chime in.

regards,
  - assaf

[Bug 1807295] Re: Sort - Checking & Handling File Types

==

"Sort like many other applications does not check for file types of the
inputs that are passed in as arguments. [...] For example, sorting files
that of type block/character/fifo does not make much sense as it will
just hang or use up all cpu cycles. "

==

> but I feel it would be nice to do the redirect with a small blurb of
> what upstream thinks about that.

Of course, the above is just my opinion, and others are welcomed
to chime in.

regards,
  - assaf

[Bug 1807797] Re: Split doesn't check for filetype

2018-12-28 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu/GNU Coreutils
better. I have sent email to coreut...@gnu.org asking about this, and a
few other bugs relating to the same basic issue, and am waiting on
feedback from upstream:

Hello,

We have had some bugs reported recently at our BTS:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1807295
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1807797
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1808092

They deal with sort, split, fmt, and uniq, respectively, and provide
tentative patches.

I would like to re-direct the reporters to upstream (i.e., you folks),
but I feel it would be nice to do the redirect with a small blurb of
what upstream thinks about that.

Thank you,

[Bug 1801097] [NEW] gnome-software does not exit a search

2018-11-01 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

I (accidentally) started Rhythmbox for the firt time ever at this
laptop. It started, and a pop-up came asking if I wanted to install
additional needed codecs (title line says "Available software for MPEG-4
ACC decoder", so I guess this was the search argument.

I accepted, and gnome-software opened with a search result for GSTreamer
codecs. I installed two of them, life is good, closed (Alt-F4) gnome-
software.

Then I decided to install some other package via GS as well. Opened
(again) it, and... I am shown a search result for GStreamer codecs. I
cannot exit this search. (via the "<" at the left of the title line). I
can only close the thing.

End result: gnome-software is now, for all practical purposes,
unavailable. Hence, the bug.

[Bug 1801098] [NEW] gnome-software does not exit a search

[Bug 1799868] Re: seq command has problems near its max integer

2018-10-29 Thread C de-Avillez
Hello Kevin, and thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu
better.

The info page for seq (info seq) has the following note:

" On most systems, seq can produce whole-number output for values up to
at least 2^{53}. Larger integers are approximated. The details differ
depending on your floating-point implementation. *Note Floating
point::. A common case is that ‘seq’ works with integers through
2^{64}, and larger integers may not be numerically correct:

 $ seq 5000 2 5004
 5000
 5000
 5004

However, note that when limited to non-negative whole numbers, an
increment of 1 and no format-specifying option, seq can print
arbitrarily large numbers.

Be careful when using ‘seq’ with outlandish values: otherwise you may
see surprising results, as ‘seq’ uses floating point internally. For
example, on the x86 platform, where the internal representation uses a
64-bit fraction, the command:

 seq 1 0.001 1.009

outputs 1.007 twice and skips 1.008."

Now, 2^64 is 18446744073709551616, which is *much* smaller than the
values you are using. So... you are in the boundary of the map, where it
is written "here be dragons."

I ran 'seq' with your initial value, and increment of 1, and varying
end-values, all larger than the initial value. All seemed to work
correctly. But the moment I changed the increment... things went south
very fast (including what seemed as an infinite loop, with 'seq'
outputting the same value over and over).

I am in a mind of closing this bug INVALID, but wanted to have your
input before that.

Thank you.

[Bug 1788048] Re: systemd journald failed unmounting var

2018-09-23 Thread C de-Avillez
Updated with upstream bug #; this seems to be an on-going concern, and
depends on some not-yet-available interfaces between kernel and systemd.

Marking Triaged/Medium. There are some bypasses discussed in the
upstream bug, but not all possible effects have already been discussed
(for example, setting 'storage=volatile' completely loses the journald
logs at shutdown).

[Bug 1791983] Re: kill -TERM exitcode regression 16.04

2018-09-11 Thread C de-Avillez
Hello Guido,

Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

As far as I can remember, Ubuntu has been using kill from the procps
package, not coreutils. On Cosmic and 16.04 (the only machines I have
access to right now), /bin/kill is being provided by procps:

cerdea@piatam:$ dpkg -L coreutils|grep kill
1 $ dpkg -L procps|grep kill
/bin/kill
/usr/bin/skill
/usr/share/man/man1/kill.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/skill.1.gz
/usr/bin/pkill
/usr/share/man/man1/pkill.1.gz

It is probable that this is also your case, but before changing the
package in the bug I would like you to check.

* man kill should tell you if it is coreutils or not;
* apt-file search bin/kill will return you all packages that deploy "bin/kill"
(note that we are only looking for /bin/kill).

Please report back, and we will then act as needed.

[Bug 1499942] Re: all settings>appeance does not provide option to show/hide underlined letters in menus

2018-09-06 Thread C de-Avillez
I have a machine running 16.04, under Unity.
* I opened LibreOffice Writer, and then:
  * pressed Alt -- the LOW main menu appears, and the entries have their
character trigger underlined;
  * pressed Alt-F -- the submenu for File opens up, and *all* character
triggers are underlined. But No other main menu
entry shows the triggers, including entries from Main.
* Opened Firefox. Alt alone shows the main menu, but *only* File has been set
to use a character trigger.
* Opened Chrome -- Alt shows the main menu and behaves like Firefox, with one
exception: Alt-F shows a different sub-
menu from (using the mouse) pointing to, and clicking on, File.

For the other sub-menus from Main (for the three appls tested), some
already have default (and personalised) keyboard shortcuts.

I am not a DE (Gnome, or Unity, or any other DE) programmer, but it
sounds like this is the expected behaviour.

I do agree that minimising mouse usage is a Good Idea (TM); even more, I
sort of agree that a *common* behaviour should be expected, and desired.
But this (I think) would require a revamp of the UI for all programs
(since it is quite clear that this is, to a point, controlled by each
individual program).

Not sure how to keep on here.

[Bug 1638634] Re: Print Job with Authentication is postponed until queue is opened manually

2018-09-05 Thread C de-Avillez
setting to Triaged/Low per request on #ubuntu-bugs. Description updated
as in comment #24.

** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Description changed:

+ Ubuntu version 16.04
+ 16.04 (cups 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.5). system-config-printer-common
1.5.7+20160212-0ubuntu2. Hplip 3.16.3+repack0-1.
+ Problem is reproducable by the bug reporter. All print jobs from many
different applications
+ Bug triager is unable to reproduce the bug.
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Print an any document from an any application's print dialog (e.g. evince,
Okular, GIMP, ReText,...).
+ 2. Printing does not happen.
+ 3. Open "system-config-printer”
+ 4. Open the printer's print queue
+ 5. All documents in the queue are processed, i.e. printed immediately.
+
+ Expected behaviour: the document prints immediately.
+
+ Actual behaviour: the document is held in the queue until the print
+ queue is opened through "system-config-printer.”
+
+ Additional notes:
+ Printer is a RICOH MP C3003 situated on a large network.
+ CUPS interface on local computer indicates that job is stopped but “release
job” button is ignored.
+ Opening the queue in “system-config-printer” on local computer immediately
starts the job.
+ Reporter has uploaded tail of access.log which mentions authentication
successful, only after the reporter opened the queue in “system-config-printer”
+ ---
+
+ Triager searched for dups - none found.
+
+ (original description follows)
+
I am connected to a print host requiring authentication. The authentication
data is already stored in CUPS. I can issue a new print job and the printer
icon in the panel appears, but the job isn't started, until I open the queue of
the respective printer.

[Bug 1788060] Re: du program crashes on /var/lib

2018-08-27 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

You refer to "crash" and "abort", but this bug does not have an apport-
generated stacktrace, neither *any* details on how 'du' fails. As it is,
there is not much we can do.

On a standard Ubuntu system, if 'du' crashes, it should generate a file
under /var/crash/, and then apport should automatically kick in and
proposed to report the crash. Did this not happen? If it *does* happen,
then please open a new bug when requested by apport, and refer back in
the to this one.

[Bug 1774049] Re: df incorrectly reports available space left

2018-07-12 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you, although we are still missing the Ubuntu version.
Nevertheless, your issue may be shown here:
https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/coreutils-faq.html#df-and-du-
report-different-information and the next FAQ question.

Also, it is possible that you may need to check the filesystem (fsck).
Another possibility is there is a runaway program writing to the
filesystem (which is, BTW, one of the comments in the first FAQ question
above.

All in all, so far I cannot see anything pointing to an error in df.

are probably many more in the limbo).

This one can be closed. I stopped using TB many years ago, and I am sure
this has been dealt with already,

I will leave the closing of this bug to you, as a good exercise. Pleas
do ping us at #ubuntu-bugs if you have any doubts (hint: close invalid,
cannot reproduce).

Cheers,
