[Bug 1885194] Re: fwupd logs unnecessarily non-ascii characters

2020-06-29 Thread Chad Miller
Maybe I should complain to them that I don't like the typeface I see my
syslog in.

I'll report upstream. Thanks, seb.

[Bug 1426840] Re: connecting to vpn fails with could not find source connection

2017-12-30 Thread Chad Miller
I don't agree with mtm that there is no bug here.

The availability of VPN should not have to depend on another interface
being managed by Network Manager. Detection of the other device's state
should be enough, and full administration should be unnecessary.

[Bug 1568050] Re: grub-install removes other EFI boot entries

2017-12-06 Thread Chad Miller
I agree this shouldn't be Wishlist. I mentioned one other thing that
would be nice to have when fixing an enormous error, and that was a
mistake.

grub-install un-installs things. That's a big bug.

[Bug 1359836] Re: Ubuntu ISOs downloaded insecurely, over HTTP rather than HTTPS

2017-09-29 Thread Chad Miller
Ubuntu security is still based on Debian-Developers' complacency. A DD
can check the image integrity because he visited a Debian keysigning
party and has the GPG web of trust to know the image signing keys are
good. That's why it's okay to have instructions and validation text in
an insecure scheme. You're a DD.

If you aren't a DD, fuck off.

I'm sorry. I'm frustrated that it's possible at all to be uncertain
about the provenance of the root of your trust of a machine.

Please try with a fresh profile, and no additional flags on command
line, OMF. If it doesn't work, open a new bug report. In a terminal,
"ubuntu-bug chromium-browser" to report it.

Then run in a terminal, and paste its output in the new bug report.

[Bug 1676368] Re: Corrupted package, impossible to install

2017-03-27 Thread Chad Miller
Either local disk problem or mirror problem.

Do this in a terminal, then if next update doesn't work, then let's file
a bug against whatever mirror you're using.

$ sudo find /var/cache/ -type f -name chromium\*.deb -exec mv {} {}-nope
\;

If that does work then either your disk is bad, the controller or cable
is bad, RAM is bad, or you didn't clean the cache correctly earlier
before retrying.

Let me know.

[Bug 1662548] [NEW] tor 0.2.7.6-1ubuntu1 has memory-access severe bug TROVE-2016-10-001

2017-02-07 Thread Chad Miller
Public bug reported:

A buffer overrun can crash Tor 0.2.4.27 (trusty), 0.2.7.6 (xenial),
0.2.8.8 (yakkety) causing d-o-s.

Tor treats "the contents of a buffer chunk as if they were a NUL-
terminated string. At least one such bug seems to be present in all
currently used versions of Tor, and would allow an attacker to remotely
crash most Tor instances, especially those compiled with extra compiler
hardening."

[Bug 1642413] Re: Chromium uses ~100% of all cores, locks up, and does not exit correctly

2017-01-13 Thread Chad Miller
As noted in IRC, paste full process list when it's happening, since none
of the chromium processes in the "grep" list are misbehaving.

$ ps axfwww

And get the end of dmesg

$ dmesg |tail -n 50

Also, the vm swappiness might already be set to "10". It happened at
default 60 at least once.

[Bug 1653007] [NEW] yakkety ioquake3 SEGV in variable handling code

2016-12-28 Thread Chad Miller
Public bug reported:

Problem exists in 1.36+u20160616+dfsg1-1

It does not exist in 1.36+u20160122+dfsg1-1

It's not specific to the sv_fps variable. Others will cause it too.
sv_fps is merely a very early one to cause a crash.

It's a pointer to a structure. It goes from

value NULL,
to 0x561a1518
to 0x0015
to 0x0015
to 0x10015
and then crashes on deref later.

[Bug 1652110] [NEW] Chromium 55+ doesn't support Widevine library

2016-12-22 Thread Chad Miller
Public bug reported:

Since the update to version 55, Amazon Prime Video and Magine TV no longer
work. I thought the fix solves this problem, apparently I was wrong. It seems
also Widevine DRM since version 55 no longer work. This affects Chromium, Opera
and Vivaldi because they use all chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra.
A downgrade to version 53 restores the function.

2016-12-22 Thread Chad Miller
@Dirk, it affected only the v55 packages released on the 16th or so.
Every one of those has been replaced in Ubuntu repositories on the 19th.

If you still have complaints, please paste the results of this from a
Terminal:

Is it near the time of the IO error on some "sr" device? Probably a CD-

Also, when it happens, what is the state of the chromium processes in

2016-12-17 Thread Chad Miller
Btw, the problem is that the message is a little sloppy on that web
site. It checked for a native way to steam using built-in codecs. That
failed. Then it tried to fall back to Flash. That failed. It only
complained about the latter.

The real fix is to make native codecs work again. Working on that.

I think I found the cause of the flash-not-running blocker. A few hours
to build, a few to test further, and then maybe released in a few after
that.

Please keep bug reports useful. Workarounds and hand-wringing make it
hard to keep track of bugs.

You probably had a small disk failure, or a corrupted download. In a
Terminal, run

sudo apt clean

sudo apt install chromium-browser

and perhaps also

sudo apt remove chromium-browser

sudo apt install chromium-browser

[Bug 1627530] [NEW] subiquity doesn't set up remote syslogging

2016-09-25 Thread Chad Miller
Public bug reported:

Local logs aren't very useful for a tiny remote device. An expert option
that creates a file

/etc/rsyslog.d/90-remote.conf

with a line like

*.* @172.17.42.1

would be useful. The bind-mount to writable and other mysterious snappy
internals is too much to expect someone to know about.

If I edit cmdline.txt and add "console=tty0" after the serial console,
no change. Blinking heartbeat. Numlock toggles. No VT switch.

If I edit cmdline.txt so the only "console=" line is tty0, then I get

I think the absence of a console device makes the step right around

[Bug 1627175] [NEW] RPi3 with only HDMI attached never shows subiquity

2016-09-23 Thread Chad Miller
Public bug reported:

The display has carrier and sync.

I see the bootloader begin and load initram and kernel.

Kernel starts. I see four fruit!

Then, silence. No lines. No blinking cursor.

Heartbeat LED blinks. Keyboard press of numlock or capslock toggles the
cursor. I can't switch VTs, judging by the fruit remaining and lock
lights remaining constant.

If I edit cmdline.txt and add "console=tty0" after the serial console,
no change. Blinking heartbeat. Numlock toggles. No VT switch.

If I edit cmdline.txt so the only "console=" line is tty0, then I get

at second 30, kernel starts booting. Four raspberries at the top.

at second 36, starts resizing disk, which takes three seconds.

at second 37, starts systemd. Heartbeat LED STOPS BLINKING.

at second 48, turns on networking.

at second 54, black screen with blinking cursor at top left.

at second 64, press-enter-to-configure.

I think the absence of a console device makes the step right around
resizing and starting systemd to hang.

[Bug 1621380] Re: console-conf should allow to configure a hostname

2016-09-23 Thread Chad Miller
The DHCP server might have told you to use a hostname to use when you're
assigned an address. If so, default to that in the prompt to the user.

I don't know what caused it either. If you type "sudo apt install
chromium-browser" at the terminal, what happens?

[Bug 1621949] Re: chromium-browser-dbg missing for 52.x

2016-09-09 Thread Chad Miller
This is a bug, in that there should be -dbg transition packages. Debug
symbols are now provided in chromium-browser-dbgsym .

Add the debug sub-repo to your APT source. Note the end of this line:

[Bug 1611037] Re: Geolocation in firefox doesn't work anymore

2016-08-15 Thread Chad Miller
The Google API calls for reaolving Geoloc crept from 90 to 100%
utilization in July. I sent mail to Pavel H at Google to ask for a
higher quota. I suspect some ad network is now using html5 geoloc more
often.

cyphermox, as for your complaint about grubx64.efi, I don't understand
it and I don't think I ever typed that anywhere, so it must have come
from grub. My "grub-install" just passes through things like that in
"$@".

[Bug 1568050] Re: grub-install removes other EFI boot entries

2016-07-25 Thread Chad Miller
> AIUI you can have the same label as many times as you want

FWIW, my practical attempts say the same name can be used any number of
times on some computers.

I don't like the same name, though. I don't think every boot should be a
mystery about which I'm picking. It's not like the EFI menu has any
smarts that lets me investigate before it goes. It might matter in ways
that have nothing to do with redundancy of booting the same machine
instance.

For an attempt at brevity and sanity, can we make the "ubuntu" label
have appended " on $udevserialpart" IFF there is more than one disk? On
install, perhaps mutate all entries starting with "ubuntu" or "ubuntu on
".
