[Bug 1844847] [NEW] System isn't using amdgpu so its defaulting to vesa driver.

2019-09-20 Thread Curt
Public bug reported:

the kernels after 4.15.0-55-generic give this error in sys.log:

Sep 20 18:56:09 curt-desktop kernel: [1.783787] amdgpu :01:00.0: Direct

been initialized
Sep 20 18:56:09 curt-desktop kernel: [1.784033] amdgpu: probe of

so amdgpu isn't working after that kernel, thus it uses VESA for video.
So I have no dual monitors any more.

[Bug 1752767] Re: grub2 regression, simultaneous console and video graphical glitches with new patch

2018-03-08 Thread Curt
Hi Brian,

Thanks for having a look at this. I am experiencing this issue too and have
enabled -proposed as suggested. The problem still seems to exist on my Gigabyte
SabrePro 15 Laptop though. Sorry if I'm not following the correct protocol for
posting here. This is my first time. Cheers!

[Bug 1656620] Re: Discoloration in some XFCE icons and window borders

2017-01-26 Thread Curt
Can confirm this just started for me with Cinnamon 3.2.7 after the
update this morning. I tried forcing the llvm-toolchain package back to
the previous version, but haven't tested or done anything beyond.

It also happened to me with Oibaf a couple weeks ago, fwiw

[Bug 49521] Re: Screen locks up black on laptop lid close.

2014-12-04 Thread Curt Sampson
I've just now, with 14.04 (fully updated as of the date of this message)
had a similar problem on my Lenovo T510. However, it seems somewhat
variable with the standard (open source) Nvidia driver. (I've set my
logind.conf to ignore lid close rather than suspend, but I saw similar
issues before I did that.)

Most of the time, on closing the lid and re-opening it, I'm greeted with
a black display, and Ctrl-Alt-F1 will not bring up the console window.
However, Ctrl-Alt-Del will still reboot the machine. On two occasions,
however, the display came back normally after re-opening the lid, and on
one occasion the machine locked up so badly that Ctrl-Alt-Del wouldn't
reboot nor would even the caps lock light come on when pressing the caps
lock key.

Switching to the closed source Nvidia driver seems to have fixed the
problem for me.

[Bug 1199895] Re: pxz crashed with SIGSEGV in _IO_vsnprintf()

2014-05-14 Thread Curt Brune
This was happening to me also. I was running pxz from within a
Makefile.

The same command would work fine if I typed it on a BASH command line.

On a whim I compared the output of ulimit -a for the two cases.

The only difference was in the Makefile context the stack size was unlimited,
whereas from BASH my stack size was 8192.

The problem went away for me when I ran ulimit -s 8192 before running
pxz in the Makefile context.

See the attached strace output from the failing case which gave me some clues
about the stack size.

[Bug 884043] Re: apticron uses in-addr.arpa record instead of hostname

2012-12-19 Thread Curt Sampson
I have confirmed that hostname in the mail sent by apticron matches
the output of hostname -A, and not that of hostname -f. (hostname
-f produces the name it used to use, and that I wish it still used.)

-A seems just wrong here, since it completely ignores the host
configuration and uses only information from the DNS, which may not even
exist (presumably producing no output), and, when it does exist, is not
infrequently not under the control of the host admin.

[Bug 884043] [NEW] apticron uses in-addr.arpa record instead of hostname

2011-10-30 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

Since installing Ubuntu 11.10 on my system, apticron has stopped using
the hostname in its e-mails and instead is using one of the in-addr.arpa
records instead. (The mail claims to come from
219.117.251.198.static.zoot.jp rather than t2.dyadic.cynic.net; the
later is the contents of the /etc/hostname file and also the address
given for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. Note that I am in the common case
that I have no control over the in-addr.arpa record, as it is delegated
to my ISP, not to me. I do potentially have control over the records for
other interfaces on the system; it's not clear to me why it would choose
this one.)

Apticron should go back to using the canonical hostname from /etc/hosts,
rather than picking presumably a random interface and looking up a DNS
record from that that may not even be set by the system admin.

[Bug 876220] [NEW] 11.10 Alternate Install to 2nd HDD installs Grub on 1st HDD

2011-10-17 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

Using the alternate install disk for Ubuntu 11.10 (I tested both Ubuntu
and Lubuntu), if you install to a second hard drive in your system
(putting a /boot and an encrypted LVM containing root and swap on
/dev/sdb), the grub install at the end will install grub on /dev/sda,
the first hard drive, instead. (The BIOS in this case was set to boot
from the second hard drive.) Thus, the second drive won't boot unless it
already had boot blocks on it from something else, and the first drive,
when booted will give Linux kernel boot options (regular and recovery)
only for the second drive.

[Bug 623887] [NEW] Errors in /etc configuration may make system unbootable, even in recovery mode

2010-08-25 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

(I'm reporting this against the kernel as per the instructions in the
finding the right package help page, as it says I should do this if
the bug makes the system unbootable even in recovery mode.)

Certain configuration errors will render the system unbootable, even in
recovery mode, and even when giving emergency on the kernel command
line, forcing you to boot from other media in order to try to resolve
the problem. Further, these errors tend to be very hard to diagnose,
since typically there are no error messages; the boot simply halts after
an fsck of the root filesystem, though the machine can be cleanly shut
down with Ctrl-Alt-Del.

(One way to debug a problem like this, if you've been using etckeeper
since before the problem occurred, is to boot with external media, mount
the root filesystem of the broken machine, and move around from commit
to commit trying to find which one broke the system.)

Configuration errors that have put me in this state include syntax or
other errors in /etc/network/interfaces and a line in /etc/fstab without
noauto when the drive it was trying to mount was not connected.

This is on 10.04 server with the latest updates as of the date of this
bug report.

Same message here as previously reported.

I did briefly see a message that included ...SRST failed but I
cannot find it in a log file

Check help file...

user.log reports ..Resuming computer

It would be nice to see a link in the message that actually leads to some help.

masc, the bug you pointed out appears to be when using a particular
hardware SATA chipset; KVM isn't mentioned anywhere there. Are you
saying that this happens with KVM guests when running on hosts without
this problem?

Using dd, I wrote new 60GB file (writing zeros) on a guest using the KVM
IDE emulation, and saw no errors on either guest or host.

[Bug 574665] [NEW] kvm + virtio disk corrupts large volumes (1TB).

2010-05-03 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

See this bug:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=2933400group_id=180599atid=893831

I have confirmed that this happens with 10.04 host and guest. Giving kvm
a logical virtio volume of 1024 GB works; a logical volume of 1048 GB
fails to install and produces disk errors on the guest (but not on the
host). Changing the kvm configuration to use an IDE volume instead works
fine even with a 1.7TB volume.

Note that, because this can introduce disk corruption, this *really*
needs to go into the release notes.

[Bug 573171] [NEW] vmbuilder sometimes ignores --raw option

2010-05-01 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

Using the following command:

{{{
vmbuilder kvm ubuntu -v --debug \
--overwrite \
--raw=/dev/mapper/xxx --part=priv.partition \
--user=xxx --name=xxx --uid=1234 --gid=1234 \
--pass=xxx --ssh-user-key=/home/xxx/.ssh/authorized_keys \
--arch=amd64 --suite=lucid --flavour=virtual \
--mirror=http://192.168.1.1:/ubuntu/ \
--timezone=Asia/Tokyo \
--cpus=1 --mem=512 \
--hostname=xxx.example.com \

--libvirt=qemu:///system \
--addpkg=acpid --addpkg=openssh-server \
--addpkg=git-core --addpkg=etckeeper \
}}}
vmbuilder will ignore the --raw option and instead create a new
ubuntu-kvm/tmpt5wDhN.qcow2 or similar file under the current directory.
Removoing the --part option makes it use /dev/mapper/xxx, but it of course
creates just a 5 MB root partition there. Also, the --rootsize and --swapsize
options appear to have no effect.

Furthermore, the raw option appears to be ignored in the config file, at
least when in the [DEFAULT] section. It's not clear for any of the
options if there's a particular section in which they need to be placed
in order to be used.

I could go on, but I suggest you rewrite the options code to a) use all
the options given, however, specified, and b) for the sake of debugging,
print out very early on in the process exactly what it's going to do so
one doesn't have to wait for a full system build to find out that it's
ignoring options you specified.

This was all run under 10.04 amd64, by the way.

[Bug 357494] [NEW] gnome-screensaver does not detect activity on second monitor

2009-04-08 Thread Curt Sampson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When using two displays without Xinerama, gnome-screensaver detects
activity on the primary display, :0, but not on the second display, :1.
Thus, in the middle of typing on :1 the screensaver will kick in. This
has been reported to Gnome as
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427905 but response has been
slow (about a year with little apparent progress). Getting a patch out
for 8.10 to fix this would greatly reduce the frustration of many people
in our office.

[Bug 242956] Re: Bind9 (8.04) not returning 'ad' flag when dnssec is enabled

2009-03-15 Thread Curt Sampson
As related in the original ticket description, all this stuff is working
fine under NetBSD; the issue is not with the data, but with Ubuntu. In
particular, there's certainly an issue with Ubuntu glibc that will
simply not allow it to check the AD bit.

While we only reported this recently, I'm wondering if this bug has
languished for years in glibc because nobody understands what the AD bit
is used for. Let me give you one example of the current situation:

 1. Try to ssh to foo.cynic.net, with authentication forwarding.
 2. OpenSSH looks up the IP address in DNS, but this has been intercepted by
the attacker.
 3. The resolver cannot authenticate so we carry on.
 4. Look up the SSHFP record in DNS, which may also have been intercepted by
the attacker.
 5. The resolver cannot authenticate this, so OpenSSH (correctly) refuses to
use it.
 6. User gets an, Unknown host, fingerprint is blah blah message.

At this point, it goes one of two different ways.

  7. User foolishly says, it's ok, continue, and connects to hostile system.
  8. Hostile system uses user's SSH authentication channel to log in to and
subvert other systems to which the user has access.
  9. User a few seconds later, realizes he's on some weird system and logs out,
but the damage is done.

Or, if the user is a bit smarter:

 7. User says, no don't connect to an untrusted host.
 8. User tries to find some out-of-band way to figure out the fingerprint of
the host he really wants to connect to.
 9. User then realizes that he's under attack.

We get around this by manually generating and copying around (to
/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts) a file of public keys for our systems. This
costs us time and money.

[Bug 188503] Re: Hardy Alpha 4 Wipes Out Other Partitons

2008-02-04 Thread Curt Dodds
Disaster for me also.
I use bootitng to manage two pata 200 GB drives with dozens of partitions and
various operating systems.
My hobby since 2002. I've had many installations overwrite my MBR, but
kubuntu-alpha-4-alternate CD also
wiped my partition table for one of the drives.
In my case the partition was already setup, the installation only had to format
it.
I managed to undelete all but one partition using bootitng's undelete. That one
contained Sayabon. It has taken me
three days to reinstall it. Cussin' all the time.

Also:
PLEASE Give us the option to NOT install grub, if install to root partition
isn't available. PLEASE!

True indeed. Feel free to delete it if desired. It's not that
serious. I'm an Ubuntu lover and would LOVE to see this distro looked
at seriously (within the enterprise sector) in the same way that Novell
and RedHat have accomplished.

On that note, I looked through the BugSquad information and am
considering volunteering if I can find some free time. How much time on

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your time!!

I don't get this problem on Edgy with 0.2.9-1ubuntu3 installed. This is
 because
/usr/bin/beagle-search starts with #!/bin/bash - ie explicitly specifying
 that the script use bash.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using and which version of Beagle?

[Bug 58300] Re: [Bug 58300] Re: Unable to find screen.

2006-08-31 Thread Curt
Hi Cristobal.

xserver-xorg-core 1:1.0.2 (I believe this was the most recent update.)
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY driver
Ubuntu Dapper w/2.6.15.24 Kernel

Upon the start of X I got the error Unable to find screen. Going
through the configuration of X was flawless and without errors, however,
upon typing startx. I would receive the same error. I reloaded the
ATI driver. Still the same error. I reloaded the xserver-xorg-core
update. Still the same error. I also completely reinstalled X. Still
the same error.

I also then booted up the live CD of Ubuntu Dapper and compared the X
files used by the CD with the ones already loaded on my system. I
couldn't find anything that was an issue.

I then went through a complete reinstall of Ubuntu Dapper and downloaded
the same update which caused the issue with the hopes of replicating the
issue and acquiring more data. After a reboot X loaded normally with no
issues. I assumed at that point that it was a glitched install of the
update that pooched something else in the system that I didn't have the
patience to locate. Quite an oddity.

Unfortunately, I didn't copy or save the log files prior to reloading
the OS.

I'm not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but I felt that I
should communicate it in case they are. Thanks for your time.

All attempts to correct the issue as proposed in the forums were to no
