[Bug 1542733] Re: Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network, "Connect" grayed out

2019-11-18 Thread Derek White via ubuntu-bugs
Could this be the reason why my hidden network takes several minutes to
auto-connect after a boot? I can actually open the menus and manually
connect *well* before the auto-connect bothers to trigger.

[Bug 1542733] Re: Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network, "Connect" grayed out

2019-11-18 Thread Derek White via ubuntu-bugs
Old issue, but they reported that by making it visible, then connecting and
setting it to auto-connect, then making it hidden again fixes the issue. I
haven't tried.

[Bug 1254837] [NEW] Window gets shorter when restoring.

2013-11-25 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

This happened with 12.04 when I was trying Unity. And, apparently it is
still going on...

Open pidgin.
It should now be in the Messenger notification tray area with a triangle

Click envelope icon.
Click Pidgin.
Pidgin window should now be open.
Stretch the widow tall.

Repeat:
Close the window using the X.
Click envelope icon.
Click Pidgin.

As you repeat, you will notice the Pidgin window gets shorter and
shorter.

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2013-11-15 Thread Derek White
M.S.: no, clicking on the icon will not minimise the app. We have a
minimise button for that, it's prominent.

I agree with #361, it is NOT prominent. This is a terrible reason to
break desktop functionality that has existed for over a dozen years. Get
your head out of your ass M.S.

[Bug 496768] Re: *.devede files aren't associated with DeVeDe in Nautilus, the GNOME file manager

2012-12-10 Thread Derek White
With help from:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/55653/how-to-associate-file-extension-not-file-type-for-a-particular-application

Created devede.xml in /usr/share/mime/packages (mod 644) [file attached].
Ran `sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime`.
Added application/xml-devede=devede.desktop; to
~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache.
Ran `killall nautilus nautilus `.

Now, opening *.devede files causes DeVeDe to open to the Disc type
selection dialog, but it does not load the project.

That is as far as I could get. Also, there is most likely a system-wide
mimeinfo.cache file to use instead of
~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache.

Found the system-wide mimeinfo.cache:
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache.

Additionally, the application/xml-devede=devede.desktop; line does not
appear to get blown away when `update-mime-database` is subsequently
run.

[Bug 997406] [NEW] Backup to Ubuntu One failed due to unknown error.

2012-05-09 Thread Derek White

[Bug 490020] Re: logrotate cron job fails for denyhosts

2012-05-06 Thread Derek White
2.6-9 or 2.6-10 appears to be in Ubuntu 12.04 repos
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/denyhosts) - can anyone
verify that the cronjob is working properly now?

Also, still waiting for this to hit the 11.10 repos...any idea if/when?

[Bug 946835] [NEW] Downloads never show as completed in Downloads window when main firefox windows is closed.

2012-03-04 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Open firefox.
Start a file download.
Open the Downloads window.
Close the main Firefox window.
Wait for the download to complete.

What I expected to happen:
When the file completes, the Downloads window entry for the file should
update to acknowledge that it is complete.

What happens instead:
The *.part file is copied to the final location. The file has completed
downloading. The Downloads window entry does not show the file has completed.
It remains this way indefinately. If I Clear List or manually clear the
entry, everything is fine.

So, the Downloads window UI seems to get stuck at the end of the process
when the main Firefox window has been shutdown.

This has occured for about the last 3 years on different installations
and versions of both Ubuntu and Firefox.

[Bug 891852] Re: Unusable IP Information table and partial obstruction of Ping tab.

Bug has been updated.

** Attachment removed: Devices tab

** Summary changed:

- Unusable IP Information table and partial obstruction of Ping tab.
+ Network Tools: Obstruction of Ping tab contents.

** Description changed:

- The Devices' tab's IP Information table has only about 10px worth of
- viewing space - making the window larger does not make the table bigger.
- It is completely unusable.
-
- Additionally, the default window size (which is not remembered between
- launches) does not allow for the Ping tab's graph to be fully displayed
- - even the legend gets cut off, let alone the graph it self. The Details
- table also suffers the same issue as described above on the Devices tab.

2011-11-17 Thread Derek White
This last one is of the Ping tab, after 5 pings, with the Details
expanded. As you can see, there is a TON of wasted space. The graph does
expand with the window size; however, just like the IP Information table
(Devices tab), the Details table does not expand.

[Bug 890010] [NEW] Bottom-right resize window icon arbitrarily resizes window when clicked.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Besides the new resize window icon interfering with the buddyicon...

After not using the new icon to resize (use top/left/right border or any
of the other 3 corners) when using it again, it arbitrarily resizes the
window as soon as the icon is clicked. Almost as if the window manager
looses track of the window size.

Video shows it all.

[Bug 890010] Re: Bottom-right resize window icon arbitrarily resizes window when clicked.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
This may be a gtk or some other under-lying element's issue, as I have
noticed the behavior on other applications; however, it is by far most
noticeable in Pidgin. Applications such as Firefox do exhibit the
behavior; however, they only resize by a few pixels (barely noticeable),
not hundreds of pixels like with Pidgin.

[Bug 864478] Re: Window shading is broken

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Found http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870006 and it lead me to
the change log for '1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6' in oneiric-proposed
(pre-released updates):

* Add some upstream missing bits from previous fixes:
- debian/patches/fix-864330.patch
- debian/patches/fix-864478.patch

A poster on the thread also reports that the oneiric-proposed version
DOES fix the issue for them. Seems like there was a slight problem with
the patch that has since been fixed.

[Bug 890041] [NEW] Untitle Document opens when opening a document using `gksu[do] gedit /path/to/file`.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

$ gedit # opens untitled document
$ gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ sudo gedit /path/to/file  # opens file
$ gksu gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document
$ gksudo gedit /path/to/file # opens file untitled document

The Untitled Document should only be opened when no file is provided,
according to `man gedit`.

Additionally, when Untitled Document is opened unexpectedly via
gksu[do], its tab icon is shown as the rotating loading icon.
Occasionally the icon will stop spinning, when the tab is focused/un-
focused it will continue spinning, until it freezes again. On the other
had, when I expect Untitled Document to be opened (e.g. `gedit`), its
tab icon is the proper plain-text icon.

[Bug 890054] [NEW] Ctrl+A does not select text when searching.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Bug #523421 is back!

Ctrl-A, when search field is open, selects all files/folders in the
view, instead of selecting the search text.

The one difference between this and #523421 is that even after a search
Ctrl-A still does not work.

[Bug 890055] [NEW] File properties information no longer expands to fit dialog.

2011-11-13 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

right-click Properties

In previous versions, the Name:, Location:, etc. fields would expand
to fit the window width.

Now, they are always truncated to about 50% of the dialog's default
width. See attached screen-shot.

This is a horrible usability problem and makes the Search (Ctrl-F)
feature almost useless - I cannot track down the file's location.

Either having the ability to see the full Location in the dialog or the
search results having an open containing folder context-menu option
would resolve this issue.

[Bug 886395] Re: Desktop icon's text no longer condenses when long.

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Keep Aligned was and is still turned on. In the first pic the icons
were as close together as keep aligned would let them be (0 icons worth
of space in between). In this new pic, the icons are separated by 1 icon
worth of space, again according to keep aligned.

Whether the icon is selected or not, the text never condenses at all.

[Bug 886395] Re: Desktop icon's text needs to be too long before it condenses.

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Further testing:
The text will eventually condense - I tripled the name of the second (from
left) icon and it did eventually condense.

However, not soon enough to make anything readable with the minimum
icon separation dictated by Keep Aligned. I expected it to condense
enough to not interfere with neighboring icons, but instead it did not
condense and did interfere.

[Bug 770283] Re: [fglrx]title bar does not update on non-maximized windows

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Happens in 11.10 Gnome Classic running compiz ATI 11.9 (fglrx 8.892).
Shaded windows still show their window decorations. Using
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left/Right to move windows between workspaces/viewports
is also broken - window just returns to the screen it started on.

Seems like window's got totally screwed over with the Unity re-
writes...and they still aren't addressing any issues they created even
after a second release. 7 months and only a tiny bit of triaging on
this...can't we even get a report this upstream/to compiz/to AMD or
we are dropping support for gnome classic, bugger off so we know you
are actively ignoring it, instead of passively ignoring it?

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later in gnome-terminal

2011-11-09 Thread Derek White
Just wanted to note that using Gnome Classic (no unity plugin or global
menubar app) and launching `gnome-terminal --window-with-profile=trans
--hide-menubar` briefly shows the terminal without a menubar, then the
window flashes, the prompt moves down to make room, and the menubar
appears with another flash. This occurs whether or not the profile
indicates to hide the menubar or not.

[Bug 886392] [NEW] No way to Run in a terminal.

2011-11-04 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Title says it all.

Alt-F2
sudo apt-get update

And, nothing happens. This is quite annoying. It is Run a command not
Run a GUI application.

If it doesn't open a terminal auto-magically, there should at the
least be a run in a terminal option as before.

Also, the Filter still shows up on this...Why? It does nothing, except
waste a third of the dialog's horizontal pixels when opened - there are
no filters.

[Bug 886393] [NEW] dconf-editor styling all messed up

2011-11-04 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Description takes up 75% of screen real-estate (see screen-shot). Had to
go full-screen for it to semi-correct itself and be use-able.

Drop-down boxes use 100% of screen width (org.gnome.nautilus.window-
state side-pane-view) and the mouse button must be held down until a
selection is made (e.g. mousedown activates the drop-down, mouseup
selects entry and closes drop-down - very annoying to not be able to go
click, click).

No application menu? Weird.

All-in-all, just seems a lot sloppier than gconf-editor - first time in
it and I already found 2 usability issues with it. Bad underlying dev
tools for the app?

Here are some more shots, this time of apps indicators sound.

'sound1.png' is with interested-media-players selected and
'sound2.png' is with show-notify-osd-on-scroll selected.

You can clearly see that the latter completely screws up the layout. In
fact, each time I click on a different key name, the description area
resizes (apparently) to a random size.

[Bug 393285] Re: Keyboard LEDs are improperly lit when resuming from suspend.

2010-08-01 Thread Derek White
I cannot confirm nor deny, as my system will not properly suspend since
upgrading - just locks screen and turns off monitor. I will get back on
this once I get suspend working.

pulseaudio[3869]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device,
but there was actually nothing to write!
pulseaudio[3869]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver
'snd_intel8x0'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
pulseaudio[3869]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a
subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value min_avail.

Shows up in syslog every boot. Karmic fully updated w/-16 kernel. No
adverse issues - other than the wasted log space.

Has anyone bothered to post this on ALSA's bug tracker? I would, but it
seems as though their cert expired in July...

[Bug 493417] [NEW] Segmentation fault after clicking Get Mail in a few folders.

2009-12-06 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Opened thunderbird (from the UI/CLI).
Entered security password let it finish checking mail.
Selected random folders (NTP/RSS/Local) one at a time and hit Get Mail icon
while in each folder.
Ended with Inbox Get Mail.
After a few seconds a window pops up stating it was unable to connect to my
newsgroup server.
Segmentation fault reported on CLI, nothing in logs.

I could use some advise on how to properly create a report to post here.

[Bug 493424] [NEW] Activity indicators never stop after selecting a newsgroup folder.

2009-12-06 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Similar Bug(?): Bug #111856

I have thunderbird set to check Newsgroups every 30 minutes (or so).
However, every time I select a folder to view, it checks the server for
messages and displays There are no new messages on the server. in the
Status Bar. This isn't my issue (although the newsgroup provider might
not like the extra, useless bandwidth being used).

The issue is what happens when that check is finished: The Stop icon,
Status Bar progress bar, and the activity indicator on the Menu Bar all
become active and do not stop until the Stop icon is pressed.

There is obviously no activity as all my mail/rss/ntp servers/feeds have
all been successfully checked and the Status Bar has printed the
outcome. As with the similar bug I linked to above, the Menu Bar
indicator can be stopped by going into exiting the 'Customize...'
menu; however, the Status Bar progress bar and the Stop icon continue as
if there is still activity.

The initial startup check; all recurring, timed checks; and any manual
check does not cause this behavior. Once this behavior is produced,
clicking the Stop icon will prevent it from occurring further in the
current thunderbird session.

This is a general annoyance, but could cause confusion for users that do
not make the connection that everything has been successfully checked.

[Bug 393339] Re: Workspace Switcher tool tip issues after activating compiz.

2009-11-14 Thread Derek White
These problems are still present in Karmic final release.

** Description changed:

- A few tool tip problems. (workspace switcher applet, gnome panel, compiz
- - I dunno)
+ When using compiz, hovering over any non-current workspaces/view-ports shows
the tool-tip:
+ Current workspace: Desk 1
+ (It even says Desk 1 when view-port 2/3/4/etc. is active.)

- 1] Click to start dragging window title shows up, but drag'n'drop
- does not work with compiz. This tool tip should be removed, or the
- functionality should be added.
+ As metacity does, it would be much more helpful for the tool-tip to state:
+ Click here to switch to view-port 1/2/etc.

- 2] When using metacity, hovering over a non-active workspace/veiwport
- shows Switch to Desk 1/2/3/4/etc. When using compiz, all non-current
- workspaces show Current workspace: Desk 1. A) Accepted functionality
- is lost. B) Shouldn't it be viewport, not workspace for compiz. ;)
+ Or, more concisely:
+ Switch to view-port 1/2/etc.
+
+ Making this change would 1) Remove incorrect statements from tool-tips
+ 2) Make the tool-tips more useful/user-friendly.

** Summary changed:

- Workspace Switcher tool tip issues after activating compiz.
+ Workspace Switcher tool-tips are incorrect with compiz active.

[Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace

2009-11-14 Thread Derek White
No Lionel. Changing the tool-tip when compiz is active (since, compiz
breaks the DnD functionality) would then make everything work as
expected keep the tool-tips useful for both cases. Yes, changing the
tool-tip won't fix the DnD problems when compiz is loaded, but it will
correct the problem of the tool-tip telling the user they can do
something when they clearly cannot do it.

Have two tool-tips: 1 for metacity, 1 for compiz. Tool-tip issue is
fixed - reporting correct functionality in both cases. DnD works with
plain vanilla metacity; therefore the tool-tip should stay stating
Click to start dragging However, if compiz is being used DnD
doesn't work, then changing the tool-tip - in that circumstance - is the
right solution, as the functionality is not there.

Why would you keep a known wrong, easily fixed tool-tip for
functionality that isn't there? Some people are used to it - it should
not have even gotten to that point. Stealing from your analogy: Just
because you're used to the kitchen being on fire doesn't mean it's OK
for it to be on fire.

And what is the wrong signal? We acknowledge this functionality is
broken for the time being; so, we will update the tool-tip to help the
user know what will happen with metacity with compiz. Once the
functionality is restored the tool-tip will again be changed to help the
user know what happens. How is that the wrong signal? Sounds like what
open software is all about to me.

[Bug 469870] [NEW] S-video is missing entirely on xrandr report - unable to use S-video

2009-11-01 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Recent install of Karmic. Have 'options radeon modeset=1' in a file
under the /etc/modprobe.d directory to enable KMS. I have had no
problems with compiz/glxgears/Xv - everything works perfectly (no
crashes/artifacts/problems of any kind) graphics/video stay inside
their windows. Prior to Karmic I had a tv-out script to enable my
S-Video output move the Xv output to it using xrandr/xvattr; however,
in karmic xrandr does not recognize that there is an S-video connection
on my card (Radeon 9550 RV350).

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 408mm x

   640x48075.0 60.0
   720x40070.1
   0x0 0.0

Previously, there would have been an entry similar to S-video
disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) after the DVI-0
listings. This is now gone. Even forcing the connection gives an error:

$ xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 15 (RRGetOutputProperty)

Current serial number in output stream: 24

I am using all default configurations (xorg.conf doesn't exist), except
for the KMS switch being set to on.

Attachment: Xorg.0.log - Sorry it's so big, I did a few VT switches and
it likes to re-log all the EDID data each time...

[Bug 96991] Re: (Needs radeon-rewrite) 3D stuff breaks with Compiz: Redirected Direct Rendering is needed in DRI

2009-09-04 Thread Derek White
Using the Alpha 5 Live CD, I pressed F6 to edit the options and added
radeon.modeset=1 just before the 'quiet splash -- ' parameters. Once the
boot process started, the screen said something like unknown boot
option, ignoring in reference to the modeset option. Boot process
continued normally, until after the boot splash went away (prior to gdm
starting): my screen went into power saving mode and the computer did
nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Del had no effect and I had to hard reset the system.

I am using an ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350) 256MB graphics card (manufactured
by ATI) on a Biostar M7NCD motherboard with an nVidia nForce2 400 + MCP
chipset. If there is any further testing/debugging I can do from the

Using the Alpha 5 Live CD, I could not reproduce this issue. Compiz was
on (by default). I could not test it with radeon.modeset=1, as that
resulted in a non-booting system. The false sync reporting issue appears
to have been fixed.

However, in 9.04 when I exit glxgears using the window manager's X
button I get the following:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0
after * requests (* known processed) with 0 events remaining.

In the Alpha 5 Live CD, I get the following using the same exit method:
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailabe) on X server :0.0
after * requests (* known processed) with 0 events remaining.

[In both cases, * is a number based on how long glxgears was running.]
Exiting with the Esc key, reports no errors.

I'll get on it. I have a few programs to test on Karmic Alpha 4.

[Bug 325182] Re: gtkpod crashed with SIGSEGV in gphoto_is_photo_playlist()

2009-08-22 Thread Derek White
Little too late for that...I've probably re-installed Ubuntu a few times
and gtkpod several times since February. Haven't had it happen for a
while now - it must have been fixed by something at some point.

[Bug 399481] Re: cups-pdf will not install properly

2009-08-18 Thread Derek White
I am running Ubuntu 9.04; however, I believe this problem occurred prior
to a re-install. Since then, I have had no need to install it, as the
functionality is built-in to cups by printing to a file and selecting
PDF as the 'Output format'. This entire package seems to be a
duplication of existing functionality.
