[Bug 68403] Re: Gnome-panel freezes regularly during use

2007-10-17 Thread Erik Chakravarty
When I see this freezing in Gutsy, one can still click on the applets
and buttons (e.g. the menu), but the icons are not updated with the
mouseover highlight. This is the case for all buttons and applets. The
most annoying part is that the clock doesn't update.

hiding the panel with the hide arrows and showing it again appears to
refresh it enough to get everything working again. It is quite hard to
notice when this happens, as the panel is still functional.

[Bug 144703] compiz leaves shadow outlines behind menu / tooltip objects

2007-09-25 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Ubuntu 7.10 (PPC)

Compiz sometimes leaves behind the window shadowing for menu and tooltip
objects after they have disappeared. This is very annoying as there is
no way to get rid of them other than recreating the window in exactly
the same place, same size to refresh the screen area, but this is tricky
- usually have to restart compiz.

It would be better to switch off menu and tooltip shadowing by default
anyway.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 112808] Clock doesn't stick to every workspace

2007-05-06 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cairo-clock

Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)

Cairo-clock has a setting in it's preferences which makes it appear in
the same position on each workspace (Stick to every workspace).

This option works, but when the clock auto-starts with the GNOME session
it is only on the first workspace not the others, despite the
preferences having this option checked.

The checkbox must be unchecked and checked again before the clock is
stuck to each desktop.

I'm not trying to register. I already have an account on that server. I
didn't touch the register button, just the one that says Connect in
the gossip account prefs.

If it's trying to do this then maybe it's a separate bug

Confirmed. There is no install option available for login manager
themes though, the button is disabled so the only option is Download
Only yet clicking this causes the art manager to crash.

[Bug 111502] network-manager unreliable with multiple APs

2007-05-01 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)
Broadcom 4306 (bcm43xx driver)

Network manager is totally unreliable when I use it at my University,
where there are multiple APs.

It drops the connection all the time, and when (more like if) it manages
to reconnect it doesn't re-establish the lost VPN connection. I am
trying to connect to this one wireless network, central - there is one
AP on channel 1 and one on channel 11. It works fine if I configure my
device manually through iwconfig to channel 1, maybe n-m tries to keep
switching between the two or something, then occasionally it just
randomly roams to a completely different network for no reason. This
should be apparent from my daemon.log.

All the APs are of similar strength, and as I said they work fine
configured manually without n-m which has been a complete pain in the
backside ever since it was included in Feisty.

[Bug 111502] Re: network-manager unreliable with multiple APs

2007-05-01 Thread Erik Chakravarty
I will add that network-manager usually works OK when at home where
there is just one strong signal from my own AP, perhaps because there
are no others that it could try to roam to as others in the area are WEP
encrypted.

If network-manager is roaming around between open networks treating them
all as equal this is nonsense logic. It is not always preferable to be
on the strongest open network - why can't network manager just accept
that I want to connect to *this one* and just configure my card for that
and leave it be until I tell it to change?

[Bug 111507] VPN passwords not saved

2007-05-01 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)
XFCE
vpnc

Network manager does not save the VPNC passwords properly (when the
button is checked) so the passwords (user and group secret) must be re-
entered every time network-manager decides to randomly terminate my
wireless connection, which it does frequently.

Perhaps this is a problem of network-manager not talking to gnome-
keyring properly, or XFCE being unable to access the keyring?

Re: [Bug 83466] Re: network-manager does not detect network

2007-04-25 Thread Erik Chakravarty
the local loopback is configured by /etc/network/interfaces. I had
residual config from previous installations in that file which
apparently prevents n-m from managing the network interfaces at all in
7.04.

Having removed everything *but* the local loopback configuration, n-m
now detects and manages the network interfaces as normal.

[Bug 107953] network-manager doesn't manage network

2007-04-20 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)

Network-manager used to handle my bcm43xx card just fine, in the beta,
displaying access points with signal strength, handling WPA and WEP
keys, handling VPN connections.

Since an update a couple of weeks ago, network manager does not do
anything except say Manual configuration.

I thought that this *must* be on the bug fix schedule before the Feisty

Re: [Bug 61607] Re: 3d rendering performance regression Dapper-Edgy with Radeon 9600 M10

2007-03-20 Thread Erik Chakravarty
It's back! Mesa packages are broken again :-(

Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)

The following packages were upgraded from 6.5.2-3ubuntu1 to
6.5.2-3ubuntu6 on 20/03/07.

libgl1-mesa-swx11
libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev
libglu1-mesa
libglu1-mesa-dev

and since then there is no direct rendering for my ATI rv350 (r300
driver). Glxgears reports around 100fps and glxinfo says direct
rendering: No.

My xorg.conf is set to XAA acceleration as there were severe performance
problems with EXA (xorg was unusable) since the mesa upgrade from 6.5.1
to 6.5.2.

Does your other 3D stuff work? Beryl? glxgears?

If this is the only package which is having problems with rendering then
I suggest you take it up with the maintainer.

Please find my xorg.conf attached.

I can provide the code I'm using for testing.

Actually I'll test the ubuntu package of that same software to confirm.

if you do apt-get install puredata gem

Then you can start puredata from terminal like so:

 pd -lib Gem

then if you click on Help - Browser...

 Then click on gem/ - 01.basic - 01.redSquare.pd

Then you get a funny graph, just click on create which will create the
opengl context, and then 1 to start rendering.

We should see a red square, but we just get a black window. if you press
0 to stop rendering and destroy to close the context, you'll get a
 segfault in glXMakeCurrentReadSGI from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

I'm quite certain its the radeon/mesa/dri causing this issue, but I only
have feisty on one machine, this powerbook5,2 with ati 9600 card.

Shall I get the gem maintainer in on the discussion? I think its Guenter
Geiger, but I don't see any maintainer listed on this page:

2007-03-01 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Acceleration now works with the current Mesa package in Feisty, however
there are severe problems with the EXA acceleration method which causes
X to use 100% of the CPU for a long time when doing simple operations
(opening firefox, for example).

Switching to XAA acceleration fixes this.

glxgears reports 1600-1700 FPS when running over Beryl + AIGLX.

[Bug 84907] Horrible intermittent distortion from microphone

2007-02-13 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Apple PowerBook G4 (5,4)
Ubuntu 7.04

This problem occurs intermittently when using either the internal
microphone (located under left speaker grille) or an external pre-
amplified mic insterted into Line-In.

When recording a sound file using sound recorder, (which defaults to
using DRC Range as input) some of the time it works just fine. However,
frequently and intermittently, the sound is *very* distorted sounding
much like very loud white noise. No sound settings are changed between
these recordings. The distortion remains for the duration of the
recording, but if it is stopped and a new one started, the recording
this time may be fine for the duration (or it may be distorted again).

This is particularly frustrating as it is not possible to tell if the
recording will be distorted until it is played back. The distortion is
not apparent through the Monitor channel when this is turned on.

I believe this problem also affects other applications using microphone
input such as Ekiga, making reliable internet conferencing pretty much
impossible.

and doesn't detect any network, but gaim should not be dependent on
this.

[Bug 83713] Re: gaim does not connect to any network since network-manager was installed

2007-02-07 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Yes, an apt-get upgrade installed network-manager some time ago, but
this package does not seem to do anything except cause other desktop
components to stop functioning.

Perhaps network-manager should be removed from the distribution if it
cannot be made to work and only serves to break the rest of the desktop.

[Bug 83752] Nautilus bookmarks cannot be re-ordered

Re: [Bug 83752] Re: Nautilus bookmarks cannot be re-ordered

2007-02-07 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Agreed that this is about a feature in Nautilus - but I think this is
something that had previously worked. Feel free to correct me on that
though. When a bookmark is dragged, a line appears between the two other
bookmarks it is dragged to, implying that it can be 'dropped' there.

Having done some more experimentation - I find that re-ordering is
actually possible but it just doesn't really work very well anymore. I
just managed to switch the position of two folders by moving a third but
the operation was erratic and difficult to control.

The rationale of being able to order bookmarks is that it's useful
having your favourite ones at the top, especially when using the gtk
Open File or Save As dialogues where it's a small window and you'd
have to scroll all the way down to find the desired bookmark.

I certainly agree that this is a wishlist bug - but it may also be a
very quick and simple fix for the Nautilus dev team so in my opinion
it's probably worth keeping it open in the interest of a high quality
user experience in the release.

Thank you for your bug. Marking wishlist, that's a feature request.
Somebody should forward that upstream. I'm not convinced that would be
an useful feature though, does the bookmark order matters? Upstream has
already over a thousand of bugs open and it's not easy to work with that
many bugs, tiny request like that one add to the list and will probably
take quite some time before being worked

[Bug 83577] LCD brightness control very poor

2007-02-06 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Public bug reported:

Apple PowerBook G4 (5,4)
Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC) updated as of 06/02/07

This is a regression in performance Edgy -- Feisty.

Brightness controls (on F1 F2) behave extremely erratically. One press of the
brightness down key turns off the display even when at maximum brightness
instead of stepping it down by one.

The brightness up key only works if it is held down - it does not step
up brightness when pressed once.

None of the brightness controls register properly in GNOME - although
the brightness indicator overlay appears, the brightness bar is empty
and is not used at all.

Both of these things worked fine in Edgy - they have been broken in the
transition to Feisty.

In addition, there is no smoothness of brightness change at all, when
turning off the display or changing of brightness levels.

I don't use, and never have used iTunes (it's a nasty piece of

[Bug 76696] Re: alt key doesn't work

2007-01-24 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Resolved, PLEASE CLOSE BUG - no further action to be taken.

This problem was due to Alt being mapped by default as the ISO 3rd level
character chooser, blocking its use as a normal Alt key - i.e. switching
to a VT, using Alt-Tab to switch windows in X, killing X, using Alt+n
for menu shortcuts etc.

Using KP_Enter as the 3rd level chooser instead frees up the Alt key
which now works as normal. This can be done using the Keyboard layout
options GUI in the GNOME control panel.

This is the section we should be looking at. If it's a UK keyboard, I
would guess that the us should be changed to the correct setting for
UK keyboards. This sort of setting is usually set manually during
installation. You may have missed that during installation, anything is
 possible.

I did not 'miss' the keyboard configuration - with Apple keyboards the
xorg pc104 us setting is the closest match I could find for the
keyboard, much better than the uk keymap.

Without going into too much research myself, I would recommend looking
into changing those settings, starting with a google search for the
xorg.conf options, or just looking to `man xorg.conf`. Let me know if
changing some of those settings helps.

If you still have a dapper livecd, pop it in and see what that section
 is autodetected as!

I believe the problem is not with xorg.conf but with the keymap.

Ubuntu needs to have built-in keymaps for (at least UK and US) Apple
keyboards given the number of users running it on their Macs and iBooks
etc., or a user friendly way of changing the default keymap.

[Bug 76696] Re: alt key doesn't work

2007-01-06 Thread Erik Chakravarty
It's a UK keyboard BTW.

I have just noticed that Alt does give me € from Alt-2, as printed on
the key which is good. It would be ideal to retain this functionality if
xorg.conf needs a different keymap.

Other keyboard layout gripes:

* Shift_3 should give £ but in fact gives #

* The ~` (tilde key) should be to the left of Z as printed. In
Ubuntu it's on the left of 1 which should give the ± and §
characters.

Re: [Bug 77795] Re: Kernel fails to boot

2007-01-04 Thread Erik Chakravarty
I am booting with the splash screen disabled so that I can see all the
messages.

This is the point where it stops. It looks like some kind of lock as the
cursor on the boot console stops blinking at this point.
