Is there more info available on the EDID issue? I am absolutely ignorant
about this (I will google this out). What should I be looking to accomplish
by overriding the EDID?

 From your logs it looks like the external monitor has invalid EDID,
 which accounts for the flickering.  Use xedid or similar to override the
 EDID.

 As to the GPU lockup, I gather it continued working properly, without
 having a hard freeze.  So this is a dupe of the false gpu bug.
