[Bug 1874272] Re: Stage "searching for obsolete software" takes a very long time (30 minutes)

2021-05-16 Thread Gregory P Smith
Judging by the 100% cpu utilization and entries in /var/log/dist-
upgrade/apt.log... as an outside observer black box guess: is this thing
loading the parsing the entire package dependency graph repeatedly once
per potential package?

88% complete after 30 minutes of CPU time...

[Bug 1809972] Re: Samsung SSD 750 EVO doesn't support queued TRIM command

2021-02-24 Thread Gregory P Smith
This also happens on the brand new Samsung 870 EVO.

And based on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203475 and
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201693 a variety of other
Samsung 8* devices on a wide variety of SATA controllers (it doesn't
seem controller related).

At the very least, the upstream change
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=ca6bfcb2f6d9deab3924bf901e73622a94900473
is wrong and really needs to be rolled back... And adjusted further
given this issue was filed for a 750 which that change didn't even
cover.

The patch attached to this issue does exactly that.

Distros should patch that change out in their kernels.

[Bug 369008] Re: mdns lookups fail over ipv6

2019-08-12 Thread Gregory P Smith
Just a note that Andrew's comment#1
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nss-
mdns/+bug/369008/comments/1 is still useful as the fix.

On Ubuntu 18.04 /etc/nsswitch.conf is still defaulting to mdns4_minimal
and mdns4. Rather than the much more useful mdns_minimal and mdns which
don't cripple IPv6 name resolution.

macOS comes with mdns .local resolution supporting IPv6 by default these
days. Surely Ubuntu should as well.

2019-07-15 Thread Gregory P Smith
I just diagnosed that openntpd on my 18.04.2 server to be broken
(failing to run, the process died after the apparmor denials, no time
adjustments ever happening) until I manually applied the changes
mentioned in #34.

Neither flags=(attach_disconnected) or "/run/systemd/journal/dev-log w,"
had been present in my apparmor.d/usr.sbin.ntpd config file. package
version 1:6.2p3-1 installed.

[Bug 337311] Re: Jaunty ath5k poor performance

my device is a Asus Eee 900A. I am using WPA2 AES with a shared key.

My most often used AP is a linksys wrt600n running dd-wrt. I am
connecting using 2.4ghz (802.11g).

Ever since installing the backported modules I have had zero wireless
problems with my device, regardless of location or signal strength.

(fwiw, wireless card's don't normally come in boxes. They've been
integrated into every portable device made in the last 5 years. I
really wonder what you're asking for there. Sure people can buy mini-
pci and mini-pcie wireless adapters but -most- people never need to know
that.)

[Bug 384584] [NEW] r8169 driver received packet corruption

2009-06-07 Thread Gregory P Smith
Public bug reported:

After upgrading an i386 ubuntu server from 8.10 to 9.04 I started
getting these errors any time I tried to transfer a useful amount of
data -to- the system via ssh:

Received disconnect from X.X.X.X: 2: Corrupted MAC on input.
lost connection

The problem only went away after I used the following command to disable
rx-checksumming on the ethernet interface:

sudo ethtool -K eth1 rx off

I have also seen corruption in .deb packages downloaded during apt-get
upgrade which I -had- been assuming was a problem in the packages on the
update mirror my system happened to contact but which would be more
consistent with this being a problem with the r8169 driver locally.

[Bug 109385] breaks after dist-upgrade (or major browser package upgrade?)

2007-04-23 Thread Gregory P Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Upgrading from edgy to fiesty I found that firefox no longer had the
flash plugin installed. Yes the flashplugin-nonfree package was still
installed on the system.

apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree apt-get install flashplugin-
nonfree

fixed the problem. apparently this meta package doesn't track the
actual installed files so they got wiped during another part of the
distro upgrade and it had no idea that it needed to rerun the macromedia
adobe installer.

** Affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 29009] Re: No keymap for 'Apple Extended USB Keyboard'

2007-03-24 Thread Gregory P Smith
This problem still exists in the Feisty Beta PPC Live CD. The left
Control key doesn't work at all (doesn't even show up as an event in
xev).

The numeric keypad defaults to arrow key mode with the Clear button
acting as a numlock as the original reporter stated.

The right Alt key also doesn't work. (to get to a text console i had to
press right control left alt f1). same situation on the text console so
something is eating those keys in the kernel i'd say.
