[Bug 1964740] Re: after upgrade virtualbox fails

2022-03-14 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
@Chris Guiverc thank you for your recommendations and, yes, I am aware of these
sites and, no, I did not find a recognition of this problem and, no, I did not
find a solution either.
The problem is, of course, twofold.
Firstly there is the situation that my VMs won't run, but
secondly, there is the situation that the Software Updater failed to prevent
that (first) situation.
Basically, I am alleging that the Software Update team has not done their job
properly.

[Bug 1915096] Re: clock/calendar displays outdated information

2021-04-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I have experienced a bug and I have adequately described its appearance.
If the responder cannot recreate that bug then that does **not** mean that it
is not a bug.
Letting this bug expire testifies of an arrogant mindset.

Re: [Bug 1921656] Re: thunderbird calendar is blank on opening

2021-03-30 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
No, I am sorry, but lodging the bug already takes time and doing a
series of screenshots takes yet more time.  Anyway, my description is
adequate.

Note that if this bug report is left to flounder then I won't bother to
report bugs anymore and use Gnome Calendar instead.

[Bug 1921656] [NEW] thunderbird calendar is blank on opening

2021-03-28 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

at first thunderbird calendar displays "enable" buttons for each calendar, but
clicking those has no visible effect.
Then clicking and clicking again the "eye" to first hide and then to display
the calendars also has no visible effect.
NOTE that this has been the case for some weeks now.

In order to only paste the text proper, one needs to "paste without
formatting".

This is not intuitive.

Please fix.

Okay. Good point about clipit.

I will run the system with and without clipit for some time and take it
from there.

[Bug 1915771] Re: Thunderbird randomly inserts string

2021-02-17 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Yes, the string "jouw maar" is what was inserted randomly.

At the time I noticed, I was composing an email in Thunderbird, but
after that I also noticed a random insertion (of some other string) in
Gedit.

Whether the strin inquestion was on the clipboard, I do not know, but
will check next time it happens.

Note that I have Clipit running.

[Bug 1915771] [NEW] Thunderbird randomly inserts string

2021-02-15 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

How ik happens I don't know, because I notice this only later, but some
string gets inserted at seemingly random place. Ctrl-Z undoes it. See
attached.

[Bug 1915478] Re: upgrader should tell WHICH third party sources were disabled

2021-02-15 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
@Brian Murray: I can't believe you pushed this off to the wishlist.
Upgrading to 20.04 had already given me headaches because you people
change the gui so much. I was so happy to leave Windows behind, but now
this! Why are you doing this??

[Bug 1915486] Re: Alt-Tab not functional anymore

2021-02-12 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
@Alex Hung, you are missing the point.

The vast, I repeat vast, majority of computer users are accustomed to
Alt-Tab and if you do not care to join the de-facto standard then you
are painting yourself into an (elitist) corner.

And it is worth pointing out here as well that to, again, the vast
majority there is no valid distinction between a window and an
application, simply because all applications run in the foreground and
if some application, for example BOINC, runs in the background then that
is explicitly made clear. Therefore, if a window is closed then the
assumption by the vast majority of users is that this closes the
application as well.

Also, saying that the GUI can be customized is myopic. The growing
standard is that applications have different skins to suit the user's
taste. The same thinking is evident in the different flavors of Ubuntu.
The ideal IMO would be a Windows skin, an Apple skin and an Android
skin.

Lastly, cavalier attitudes like yours are part of the reason that Linux
has such a steep learning curve.

[Bug 1915486] [NEW] Alt-Tab not functional anymore

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Windows uses the Alt-Tab combination to toggle between programs,

"Microsoft Windows is the most commonly installed OS, at approximately
between 77% and 87.8% globally.
2021-20-12))

That means that Alt-Tab is the defacto world standard.

Now, I very much don't like Windows and Super-Alt might bwell e a better
option than Alt-Tab, but the world would be a better place if there were
more standardization.

So ...

please swallow your pride and get with it!

[Bug 1915484] [NEW] upgrader alert panel can be moved, but not resisez

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

At the end the upgrader ask "remove obsolete package", but the
button is not visible on my laptop screen (1366x768).

Alt-space bring up a menu to minimize, unmaximize and move the panel,
but the resize option is greyed out.

After moving the panel, the resize option becomes available.

This is ridiculous.

[Bug 1915479] [NEW] button to start upgrade not visible on laptop screen

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

At the beginning the upgrader asks "do you want to start the upgrade",
but after I check the "details", I notice that the start-button is below
the bottom of my screen (1366x768).

Moving the panel up shows a tiny bit of the button so I can proceed.

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

The upgrader tells me that third party sources were disabled.

The upgrader should list which third party sources it has disabled so I
can take appropriate action.

Linux has a steep learning curves and this is making it worse.

[Bug 1888801] Re: Enhancement: Put all user interaction during upate at the very beginning or end.

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
And I think bug 1789769 is relevant as well

I believe it is reasonable to assume that Software Updater is capable of
ascertaining *before* starting the upgrade whether there are any
questions that need answers in order for the upgrade to proceed. Surely
is *not* reasonable to expect every user to be knowledgeable about all
details of the system. As a case in point, when upgrading from 16.04 to
18.04, I was asked to choose between Gnome3 and Lightdm when I had never
even heard of either before.

[Bug 1888801] Re: Enhancement: Put all user interaction during upate at the very beginning or end.

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Another example would be as per bug 1794400

While upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 I twice got the message "low disk space".
The upgrade was successful (as far as I can see).
However, the condition should have been reported *before* starting the upgrade
to allow the user to take appropriate action.

[Bug 1915233] [NEW] Document Viewer has no underlines on Alt-Spacebar menu

2021-02-09 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Alt-Spacebar brings up a menu to minimize-maximize-move-etc the window.

That menu does not have letters underlined so the user cannot use the
keyboard.

reason of, for example, suffering from, or trying to prevent getting,
repetitive strain injury (RSI).

[Bug 1915097] [NEW] kernel needs to put a date/time-stamp in the log at boot

2021-02-08 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

The log as output by dmesg does not contain the date-time of last boot.
This seems a serious oversight. Surely, the kernel is able to query the
clock? Knowing the exact date-time could be crucial in cases of
repeated reboots.

Anyway, a date-time stamp would seem a reasonable requirement from an
auditing perspective.

[Bug 1914970] [NEW] upgrade 16.04 -> 18.04 wrongly resets user permissions

2021-02-07 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

I had modified /etc/ssmtp/revaliases and /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.config to give
myself read access so that my backup routine could copy them.

After upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 the permissions on both files were
reset and only the group 'mail' was given read-write permission and
'others' were denied read access to ssmtp.config.

The upgrader should NOT have done that.

[Bug 1914846] Re: cannot upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04

2021-02-06 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I had Software & Updates set to use the Australian server.

I switched to the main server and the update proceeded without problems.

IMHO this is NOT a matter for the support sites, but for whomever it
concerns (at Canonical, I presume) to get the people maintaining the
Australian server to do what they need to do.

Providing a mirror is very commendable, but brings with the OBLIGATION
to keep it up-to-date and no excuses accepted.

[Bug 1914663] [NEW] Software Updater must tell WHICH resource it cannot reach

2021-02-04 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Software Updater sometimes reports "Failed to download repository
information" and "Failed to download package files".

But my internet connection is OKAY.

That means that Software Updater cannot reach some resource, but it does
not tell me which.

And that means that I am unable to resolve the problem.

And that means that this is a bug.

If this is intended then it is entirely user-UN-friendly. IMHO it is
most likely the result of sloppy maintenance.

[Bug 1846718] Re: Pressing and holding the Super key should display numbers [1-9] on the dock icons before pressing any number key

2021-01-27 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Super+Q is NOT enough and, worse, it increases the memory burden for
people who need to use the keyboard because using the mouse aggravates
their RSI.

Please have some consideration for non-mouse users.

[Bug 1581594] Re: constantly shows wrong temperature (99°C )

2021-01-27 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I have copied below the information from bug 1912873 for convenience
--
SMART attribute 231 of the KINGSTON SA400S37480G (SBFKK1B3) is defined as
"SSD_Life_Left" (see
https://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/MKP_521_Phison_SMART_attribute.pdf).

The drive is correctly specified in the smartmontools, smartctl/smartd
database (see attached).

disks (gnome-disk-utility 3.36.1 = UDisks 2.8.4 (built against 2.8.4))
reports attribute 231 as "temperature".

Possibly relevant is that "smartctl -t short" reports an error (see
attached)

Bug 1878509 probably refers to the same problem.

[Bug 1912918] [NEW] Super Key does not display numbers on launchbar

2021-01-23 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Pressing the Super Key used to display the numbers 1-9 and 0 so users
could use the keyboard to launch their favorite applications, i.e. those
locked to there.

Now those numbers are gone and users need to count down to find out
which key to press.

This a serious degradation of usability.

[Bug 1912426] [NEW] clock is obscured by item on top bar

2021-01-19 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

the clock display is the middle of the top bar and items are added to
the top bar from the right with the result that an item can overlap with
the clock -- see attached

Crazy.

Put the clock at the right end of the top bar and the problem disappears

@humphrey.vanpolanenpetel That is four year old software. Please first
test this with a recent GNOME version (3.36) before reporting software
bugs to GNOME's issue tracker

I thought Xenial, i.e. 16.04, is still being maintained -- perhaps not
so?

118K files in trash
gvfs-trash consumes both CPUs and 100% of available memory

"empty trash" goes into prepare phase, but nothing appears to happen,
presumably because of the large number of files, so I closed the window
by clicking the

rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/*

nautilus window on trash:/// goes dark for a long time, but eventually
comes back to show Trash to be empty

opening the Trash icon (on the on the launch bar) shows it to be empty
and both and buttons are greyed out, but the Trash
icon still shows 'filled'

2020-07-22 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
The hardware maintenance phase of 16.04 finished end Q1 2018.
The release date of the Kingston SA400S37 ssd was Q1 2017 which falls within
the responsibility of the hardware maintenance phase of 16.04.
Therefore, this information should be incorporated in 16.04

2020-07-02 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I wouldn't know whether it a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsmartcontrol/+bug/1873546,
because it concerns two different utilities. Sure, they could both be
using the same underlying resource which could be the one at fault, but
I do not have sufficient knowledge about these matters, though on the
basis of my reading on forums I suspect hddtemp as I mentioned in the
description, but that is only my opinion.

[Bug 1874371] Re: disks reports incorrect smart details

2020-06-23 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
All relevant information is in the description; specifically, this:

see also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsmartcontrol/+bug/1873546

and I copy my latest comment from there, because it seems quite relevant
here.

The hardware maintenance phase of 16.04 finished end Q1 2018.
The release date of the Kingston SA400S37 ssd was Q1 2017.
Therefore, the upstream decision from Debian maintainer, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/smartmontools/+bug/1858121
is within the bounds of the hardware maintenance phase.
Accordingly, update-smart-drivedb should be reinstated, backported from 18.04.

[Bug 1881230] [NEW] gsmartcontrol should not save test results as root

2020-05-28 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

gsmartcontrol requires root access to run, which is okay, but since it
is typically run by a user any directory created and any results saved
therein after running a test should not be owned by root, but by the

[Bug 1878509] [NEW] psensor reports ssd attribute incorrectly

2020-05-13 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Kingston specifies the details for code 231 as "SSD Life Left" (see
https://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/MKP_306_SMART_attribute.pdf),
but psensor reports this as "Temperature" (see attached picture).

This gave me a mild panic.

The hardware maintenance phase of 16.04 finished end Q1 2018.
The release date of the Kingston SA400S37 ssd was Q1 2017 which falls within
the responsibility of the hardware maintenance phase of 16.04.
Therefore, this information should be incorporated in 16.04

Please fix

[Bug 1873546] Re: GSmartControl interprets code 231 incorrectly

2020-04-21 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I am on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
update-smart-drivedb is not available
smartmontools 7.0 is on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
I am not familiar with pinning a package in aptitude
I read that upgrading a package to a newer release might pull in other stuff
that might cause trouble for my release -- would this apply to upgrading to 7.0?
Would compiling from source code be a safe solution?

[Bug 1767299] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Installer creates swap partition too small

2018-12-23 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I installed 16.04 on a hand-me-down laptop, because I need to support another
system that is on 16.04 and it is easier for me to have an identical system
I installed 16.04, because later versions do not allow remote control using
remmina (# 1790251, 1790249 & 1741027).
System is a 8Gb laptop with a 480Mb ssd.
Installer created a swap of 976Mb.
Install version was 16.04.5. (Note that my DVD with 16.04.3 creates a swap of
appropriate size.)

The system will hang when used heavily, but does recover.

However, contrary to earlier comments, rebooting during such a 'freeze'
is *not* guaranteed safe. On my system it has multiple times corrupted
the file system which caused boot to fail and which required a run of
"fsck /dev/sda1".

After I followed instructions found on
help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq, I now have an 8.3Gb swap and the
system does not hang any more.

I spent two weeks before I realized that the problem was with the swap
size.

In my opinion it is bad to change something as dramatic as swap-size.
The installer should ask questions and give options.

*** This is not an "opinion" and consequently I have re-opened it ***

[Bug 1794899] Re: ghex both installed and not-installed

2018-12-08 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I am essentially a non-technical user, but open source appeals to me so
I am happy to contribute what I can. Unfortunately, the culture at
Ubuntu is incomprehensible to me and I have effectively given up. When
they say that Linux has a steep learning curve they are not joking, but
I am always prepared to learn. But then I find out incompatibilities
between apt, synaptic and "ubuntu software" and I throw up my hands in
disgust. And now there is snap installs which is different from regular
installs of which nobody told me. Do you people think I am clairvoyant
or what? So, no, I do not know what my problem is. I find something
that is wrong, I tell you about about, I expect you to fix it and I
refuse to accept responsibility for something that I don't understand.
If you want my cooperation then you will need to protect me from bugs
that should have been caught during testing.

[Bug 992430] Re: ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

2018-11-18 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Sorry, Paul, but I have lost my faith in the idea of volunteer support
without strict oversight (which I gather is how things are working
here). There have been too many problem that I felt were important that
were graded low importance or even placed on the wishlist. I get the
strong impression that this is the consequence of essentially a CLI
mindset while the rest of the world is GUI. I plan to one day write to
Canonical about this, but I have other priorities. Meanwhile I am happy
to let this one expire.

Humphrey

[Bug 1751421] Re: software updater causes mouse buttons to stop working

2018-10-05 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I believe that the criteria as set out in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance allow me to argue as follows.

Firstly, I have a mouse arm and use the keyboard by preference, but
there are programs (and Software Updater is one of them) that do not
follow what appears to be the standard in filling the active button with
orange (for an example, see attached). This means that when I am in
doubt and the lighting is not adequate I must use the mouse to prevent
myself from clicking on the 'wrong' button and using the mouse often
leads to a painful arm which restricts me in my work.

Secondly, my mother is basically computer illiterate and panics when
things go 'wrong' in the sense of 'not as expected'.

Thirdly, I believe that we are not alone in this.

>From this I conclude that I have grounds to ask for rating this bug to
be of higher importance.

Specifically, I ask for a rating of preferably "high" on the grounds of
criterion "Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users
(estimated)", but at least "medium" on the grounds of criterion "A
usability issue that does not limit the functionality of a core
application".
