[Bug 598335] Re: gnome locks up with cgroup-bin installed

2012-05-31 Thread John Clarke
Could this be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcgroup/+bug/693594?

I had problems with modprobe -r hanging, and after that any attempt to
do anything with modules also hung. After much testing I discovered
that cgroups was to blame, and setting cpu.rt_runtime_us in the
sysdefault cgroup as suggested in comment 13 in that bug fixed the
problem.

[Bug 506284] Re: libcanberra-gtk-module.so: undefined symbol: gtk_widget_get_window

2010-03-26 Thread John Clarke
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by shipped and non-shipped
versions. I have only a small number of packages that did not come from
Ubuntu's repository, and these are libdvdcss2 and w64codecs from
medibuntu.org, and mythtv and nvidia driver packages from avenard.org.
As far as I can tell, none of these additional packages have anything to
do with this bug.

If you're referring to the result of 'apt-cache policy' that I included
in the original bug report, the two additional mirrors that appear there
are simply mirrors of the official Ubuntu repository.

Of the packages you list, I have only libglibmm-2.4-1c2a installed.
None of these packages are listed as dependencies of libcanberra-gtk-
module. If they are needed, shouldn't they be dependencies?

After installing the additional packages, I couldn't find the symbol
gtk_widget_get_window in any of the shared libraries that they include,
but vmware player now runs without error.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 506284] [NEW] libcanberra-gtk-module.so: undefined symbol: gtk_widget_get_window

Trying to run VMWare Player 3.0.0 build 203739 on Karmic 64-bit, I get
this error:

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmplayer: symbol lookup error:

gtk_widget_get_window is indeed undefined in libcanberra-gtk-module.so:

This symbol is not defined in any shared library on the system.

The 32-bit version of VMWare 3.0.0 build 203739 runs fine on my Karmic

undefined symbol.

I can't find gtk_widget_get_window in any of the shared libraries on

[Bug 317088] Re: suspend broken on HP Pavilion dv5000 with Intel chipset

2009-12-17 Thread John Clarke
As I said in comment 7, suspend and resume worked for me with Intrepid.
I tested one of the Jaunty RCs and it didn't resume, but my laptop's HDD
failed and I never did upgrade to Jaunty so I don't know whether the
final release worked or not.

On a clean installation of Karmic, with all updates applied, suspend and
resume work almost flawlessly. The only problem I've found in my
limited testing so far is that the backlight sometimes is dimmed on
resume, It's not consistent; sometimes it comes back on at full
brightness.

I haven't tested hibernate yet, nor suspend with wireless networking.
I'll do those in the next day or two.

Similar crash here. Up-to-date Intrepid, kismet-2008-05-R1-4, iwl3945

To get wireless networking working again, I don't need to unload

does the job.

I commented on the previous bug. Mine is a dv5230tx, Intel T2250

Suspend/resume had never worked for me until I upgraded to Intrepid
(I've tried every release since Dapper) and now it works almost
flawlessly.

 I have linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic and linux-backports-
modules-2.6.27-9-generic installed. The latter package is essential in
getting wireless to work after resuming.

[Bug 91968] Re: Suspend and Hibernate do not work in HP Pavilion dv5000

2008-12-15 Thread John Clarke
Hibernate and suspend now work (and resume correctly, most of the time)
on my dv5230tx with Intrepid with kernel version 2.26.27-9.19 and with
linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-9.5 installed.

Occasionally, I have to reboot after resuming from hibernation, usually
because NetworkManager hasn't come up properly (and reloading network
modules and restarting NetworkManager doesn't always fix it), but this
happens much less often with Intrepid than it used to with Hardy.

[Bug 215814] Re: [hardy live] Changing wallpaper does nothing

2008-08-25 Thread John Clarke
I've had this problem too, but can't reproduce it on demand. Sometimes
changing the background image works fine, other times it doesn't.
gconf-editor shows that the key
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename is changed to contain the
path to the newly selected image, but the desktop background isn't
actually changed until I log out and back in again.

I don't know whether it's relevant, but have seen two instances of
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 running when this happens. Killing one or
the other (or both) doesn't change the behaviour.

[Bug 261375] [NEW] ssh-add -l lists the fingerprint of ~/.ssh/id_rsa even if it's not loaded

2008-08-25 Thread John Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Hardy 8.04.1
gnome-keyring-2.22.2-0ubuntu1
openssh-client-1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1.2

When gnome-keyring is used as the ssh-agent, ssh-add -l should only
list keys which are actually loaded. Instead, it always lists the
fingerprint of ~/.ssh/id_rsa, in addition to any loaded keys. If
~/.ssh/id_rsa is loaded, it is listed twice.

After logging in with no keys loaded:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/]$ ssh-add -l
1024 9c:c3:8d:34:09:9e:4d:0f:ca:b5:aa:84:d8:6b:f7:8b (RSA)

Adding the key:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ssh-add
Enter passphrase for /home/johnc/.ssh/id_rsa:
Identity added: /home/johnc/.ssh/id_rsa (/home/johnc/.ssh/id_rsa)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/]$ ssh-add -l

1024 9c:c3:8d:34:09:9e:4d:0f:ca:b5:aa:84:d8:6b:f7:8b (RSA)

Removing all keys:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ssh-add -D
All identities removed.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/]$ ssh-add -l
1024 9c:c3:8d:34:09:9e:4d:0f:ca:b5:aa:84:d8:6b:f7:8b (RSA)

Moving ~/.ssh/id_rsa away:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ mv .ssh/id_rsa .ssh/xxx
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ssh-add -l
The agent has no identities.

OpenSSH's ssh-agent correctly lists only those keys which are actually
loaded:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ bash
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ eval `ssh-agent`
Agent pid 24398
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ssh-add -l
The agent has no identities.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ssh-add

[Bug 258089] [NEW] xterm segfaults when run via panel launcher

2008-08-14 Thread John Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xterm

Package: xterm-229-1ubuntu1
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

When started from a panel launcher, xterm segfaults shortly after
startup at least 50% of the time. When run from the command line, it
always seems to work. The launcher was created with Add to
Panel/Custom Application Launcher/Command=xterm. Additional arguments
to xterm do not seem to affect whether or not it crashes.

I'm running Hardy i386 on a Core2Duo. I also experienced similar
failure to launch from xterm on Gutsy, on this same PC and on another
PC.

This appears in /var/log/syslog each time:

(esp varies but the other addresses are always the same).

No core dump is produced (ulimit -c is unlimited and a simple test app
which does *(int*)0=0 does produce a core file), nor is there a crash
log in /var/crash (apport is enabled).

Changing the launcher command to run strace produced the attached log.

[Bug 130473] Drawer opens behind other windows when beryl window manager in use

2007-08-05 Thread John Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a drawer in the top panel which opens behind any windows if I'm
using the beryl window manager. If I switch back to metacity, then
drawer opens on top of any open windows. I have focus follows mouse and
auto-raise enabled.

If I move the cursor away from the drawer button and over the uppermost
covering window (firefox in the screenshot), the drawer pops up. If I
move the cursor over another window which is covering the drawer (the
terminal window in the screenshot), then the drawer will not pop up
above other windows. I have to move them all away before I can access
the contents of the drawer.

[Bug 124562] Re: compiz - java problems

2007-08-03 Thread John Clarke
I see the same behaviour with java (sun-java5 or sun-java6) + beryl
+nvidia-glx on Feisty. If I change the window manager from Beryl to
Metacity, the java app (JOSM) works normally.

[Bug 38140] Re: dhclient3 keeps running after ifdown

2006-11-21 Thread John Clarke
I'm also adding this comment because bug 49801 has been marked as a
duplicate of this one. I'm not sure they are the same: the problem,
dhclient not killed, is the same, but the conditions are different.

I installed Edgy on a new machine late yesterday, changed eth0 from dhcp
to static in /etc/network/interfaces, ran ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 and
verified that eth0 had come back up with the correct static address.

All was well went I went home a few hours later but when I came back
this morning discovered that the address assigned to eth0 had changed
because the dhcp client was still running.

/var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid was not empty; it contained the pid of the
rogue dhclient process.

I'll second tho's suggestion: could it be caused by ifdown assuming that
the relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces hasn't changed since the
network was brought up?

[Bug 1027] Re: [Bug 1027] Re: Keyboard input not accepted after copying selection with Control-C

Hi John. Is using this openmotif version a complete alternative to the

Pretty much. The only caveat is that libmotif3 (openmotif) is in
multiverse, but nedit is in universe. If all you care about is
functionality, then openmotif is the better choice. In my experience,
nedit is completely unusable with lesstif so openmotif is the *only*
real choice right now.

Yes, definitely. However, it may be sensible to link nedit with
openmotif in the meantime though, even if it means moving it to
multiverse, because there's little point in shipping a completely
useless program just so that it's free.

Non-free + functional beats free + non-functional any day :-)

I'd offer to help debug it but I'm heading off for a very long holiday
tomorrow which will include long periods without 'net access (and
anyway, I'm escaping from s/w development!). If there's been no
progress by the time I return (mid-October) I'll be happy to do what I
can to help fix it.

[Bug 1027] Re: Keyboard input not accepted after copying selection with Control-C

2006-08-17 Thread John Clarke
The almost working version (except for UTF8 not supported) built with
openmotif is here:

http://kirriwa.net/john/software/nedit/nedit-
dmotif_5.5-1ubuntu1_i386.deb

Unsetting LANG removes the UTF8 not supported error and it works
perfectly. I've been using nedit-dmotif for over 12 months now and it's
been fine.

I was wrong about it having been fixed.

I couldn't reproduce it on the Dell D400 I was using at the time, but
I've recently installed dapper on an HP Pavilion dv5230tx and the bug is
still there. I've also been able to reproduce it on a desktop machine
running breezy.

[Bug 50401] ddclient generates invalid query url for Cisco routers

2006-06-19 Thread John Clarke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ddclient

When ddclient is configured to obtain an IP address from a Cisco router,
it generates an invalid query URL. Using this configuration:

use=cisco
fw=192.168.77.1:8080
if=d0
fw-login=ddclient
fw-password=password

results in the query URL:

 http:///level/1/exec/show/ip/interface/brief/d0/CR

Rather than use the 'fw' value as the hostname, it ignores this field
and uses a blank hostname. The cause is in get_ip():

sub get_ip {
my $use = lc shift;
my ($ip, $arg, $reply, $url, $skip) = (undef, opt($use), '');
$arg = '' unless $arg;

$use is cisco, and opt('cisco') is undefined because cisco is not a
valid configuration option. Later it uses $arg to build the query URL:

$url =
http://${arg}/level/1/exec/show/ip/interface/brief/${queryif}/CR;;

What it should do is use opt('fw') as the hostname, which is what's
implied in README.cisco.

The same bug exists in the latest ddclient, v3.7.0.

This patch fixes the problem, and updates the ddclient config example in
README.cisco to match the Cisco config example:
