[Bug 1547892] Re: lubuntu autohide task bar bug

2016-09-02 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
A better work around is to click on the panel network icon and not move
the mouse, use the keyboard arrows to highlight the item you want to
select then press enter. This way you do not have to disable autohide
each time.

[Bug 1316830] Re: /usr/lib/accountsservice/accounts-daemon :: memory and CPU time leak

2014-11-25 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
I figured it out by attaching to the process with gdb and doing a
backtrace. Apparently my wtmp and btmp files got full from devices doing
remote logins on a regular basis. I became suspicious that there was
something particular to what I was doing based on how few people were
affected by this. Here is the size of my files:

-rw-rw 1 root utmp 7160832 Nov 24 21:23 /var/log/btmp
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 116148480 Nov 25 22:39 /var/log/wtmp

I need to have a cleanup job for these files anyway illregardless of
what the accounts-daemon does but it may help if the accounts-deamon
does not process the while file if possible. I have not looked into what
accounts-deamon does with the files so I am not sure if it is feasable
just to look at the end of the files instead of the whole file.

Even with truncating the files accounts-deamon seems to be too much of a
busy body but for now at least the %CPU is below 1% on average but I do
see it peak at times to 10%. The polkitd now shows up at the top more
than accounts-deamon, from the threads on this I beleive that deamon is
part of the same processing.

[Bug 1316830] Re: /usr/lib/accountsservice/accounts-daemon :: memory and CPU time leak

2014-11-25 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
My solotion for now based on my comment above is to modify
/etc/logrotate.conf to back these files up daily with three backups and
compress them. This should hold off the problem for anyone having this
due to the wtmp and btmp files being large unless they have even more
logins daily than I do. Be careful how you modify the cleanup of these
files, the information is needed to triage intruders.

2014-01-07 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
This seems to be in multiple bug reports, I did not realize this one was
still open. I have not seen the issue in a while, I have now been able
to pan on the original ACER nettop I had the issue with as well as other
dissimilar configurations. For me I am considering this fixed.

[Bug 877878] Re: randr panning not working

2011-10-31 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
I am thinking I might have to fix this myself if I want it fixed. A bit
of thought is needed to avoid making the bug where things are lost in
multi-monitor displays not come back when fixing this. I do not have
time to fix this currently but I have found a workaround for small
monitors. I have been experimenting with FVWM and the EdgeScroll
feature. This feature may take less video memory given I believe it does
not create a frame buffer so the virtual screen can be as big as you
want (if I understand how frame buffers work?). It seems some expertise
is needed to incorporate the panels/look and feel from other desktops
but something is necessary to use apps where buttons go off the bottom
of the screen. A little experimenting I am finding lxpanel works great
with EdgeScroll enabled.

[Bug 881046] Re: Panning in a virtual monitor is not possible after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-31 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
The bug affecting dual monitors was to keep things from going off the
edge of the screen of the smaller monitor. In fixing that bug the signal
to pan in xorg was disabled due to the fact the mouse does not go off
the screen to signal the need to scroll.

Some apps will not work on small screens given they have buttons that go
off the bottom of the screen.

For now I have found a workaround for small monitors. I have been
experimenting with FVWM and the EdgeScroll feature. This feature may
take less video memory given I believe it does rely on the frame buffer
so the virtual screen can be as big as you want (if I understand how
frame buffers work?). It seems some expertise is needed to incorporate
the panels/look and feel from other desktops but something is necessary
to use apps where buttons go off the bottom of the screen. A little
experimenting I am finding lxpanel works great with EdgeScroll enabled
make sure lxpanel is set to StaysOnTop.

[Bug 877878] Re: randr panning not working

2011-10-22 Thread Jonathan Greenblatt
Unfortunately I do not have time to triage this myself, normally I like
to post solutions with bug reports. In any case I would like to see some
priority given to this, certain system menus in Linux have poor UI
design and are unusable without panning on netbooks.

I originally opened this for the LightDM window manager but that group
suggested I open a new bug under xorg, the original bug was:

I noticed this said affects one user. I am also affected. I have a Acer

command below. The virtual screen size seems to change but when I mouse
to the bottom of the screen the panning appears to be disabled. Hope
this additional information is useful.
