[Bug 1323404] [NEW] Segfault on adding WiFi for Broadcom in Lubuntu 14.04

2014-05-26 Thread John Bartley K7AAY
Public bug reported:

A Dell Inspiron B130 with a Broadcom 4318 card receives a segfault on
adding WiFi which was not detected at the 32-bit Lubuntu 14.04 LTS
install. WiFi works flawlessly on XP and Win 8.1u1.

I try to install the driver after a new Lubuntu 14.04 32-bit install
(ISO passed the MD5 checksum test), and I end up with a segmentation
fault when I try to follow the official Ubuntu instructions from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx (which are for
12.04 and earlier, anyway). See attachment to show the result.

I then try to add using Additional Drivers in Synaptic, which fails,
prompting me to run sudo dpkg --configure -a which results in another
Segmentation Fault. This has been replicated several times.

The network connection fails until I shutdown and restart. No WiFi even
after the shutdown/reboot.

Then, I replace the wl package with b43cutter Version 1:018-2 which does
not segfault, but also doesn't work when I try to connect with it.

[Bug 454437] [NEW] Karmic gdm loops back to login after login

2009-10-18 Thread K7AAY
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After running for a week with random freezes of 30 secs-two min, I
replaced the RAM on a newly acquired HP Pavilion ze2113us laptop,
elevating RAM from 512MB to 1GB and reducing video RAM from 128MB to
64MB. Ran memtest 4x with no errors. Put the laptop back in service, and
six hours later, did a shutdown when I relocated.

Upon power-up, I am now prompted for login (whereas I did not require
passworded login before) by gdm after the splash screen. When I enter
the password for the sole user on this machine, gdm loops back to the
splash screen, then forces login again.

I verified the password is correct as an incorrect password generated an
'authentication error' whereas I am able to use that correct password
for sudo on a recovery login.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd'
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 (development branch) with Linux 2.6.31-14

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy gdm'
2.28.0-0ubuntu19

3) What you expected to happen

I should not have been prompted for a password, as I configured for no
required login and ran that way for over a week without login problems.

4) What happened instead

When I boot the machine for a normal boot, after the splash screen, I am
prompted by gdm; I enter my password, and then the splash screen
reappears, then gdm loops back to the login screen again.

Re: [Bug 449161] Re: 0.26 install fails on Karmic

2009-10-15 Thread K7AAY
I went to the PPA because, after I installed it from the universe
repositories, it appears in Synaptic as if installed, but does not appear as
a usable applet. Right clocking on bare space in the panel did not show it
as an available applet two days ago after installation from the
repositories.

Today, after a reboot, it appears, but crashed when edited for the first
time. I will abuse it further and see if I can provoke it in predictable
failure, and report further.

The non-working xorg.conf can be found on the LiveCD for 6.06LTS, 6.10 and
Feisty-5.
Here's the working xorg.conf

Three different LiveCDs, different versions, same result. I''ve wiped the
old one.

[Bug 94330] Re: Ubuntu video failure on LiveCD boot/install - 6.06LTS, 6.10 and Feisty Fawn

2007-03-23 Thread K7AAY
Resolved by looking at what video card Knoppix deteced, copying the xorg
file onto a USB memory drive, rebooting Ubuntu, dropping into text mode,
and adding in to the virtual filesystem the xorg file. Fawn now finds
the right driver, and all's well.

- Dell Inspiron 8100, NVidia GeForce2 Go video card.
+ Dell Inspiron 8100, ATI RAGE MOBILITY video card.

Knoppix 5 can recognize the video OK, but no recent Ubuntu (6.06LTS,
6.10 and current Feisty Fawn) can. Did confirm (MD5 checksum and self-
test) the CD images were downloaded properly. Have installed Ubuntu on
about 30 boxen previously, plus about three w/ Kubuntu and five w/
Xbuntu; first video failure with any *buntu.

Video 's OK until about 1/3 of the way across the screen, where the rest
of the screen is covered by another rendition of the first part of the
screen. The right end of the screen is repeated twice, as well. Can't
read the dialog boxes to do an install.

Booting with vga=771 does not work, either. Neither does VGA 'safe'
  mode.

How can I get Ubuntu to recognize the video hardware so I may
  successfully install?

  Thank you in advance.

Public bug reported:

Knoppix 5 can recognize the video OK, but no recent Ubuntu (6.06LTS,

Video 's OK until about 1/3 of the way across the screen, where the rest

Booting with vga=771 does not work, either.

How can I get Ubuntu to recognize the video hardware so I may
