[Bug 655433] [NEW] Remote Desktop asks for keyring login on remote end
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vino I have one Maverick system trying to connect to another by remote desktop (VNC). The remote server is connected to my TV, so I've set it up to automatically login to Gnome. I have used the following settings for Vino on the server/HTPC: * Require a password for VNC login, * Don't require confirmation before others take remote control, The problem is, when I try to connect to that server from my laptop, it prompts the server's console (connected to my TV) on the remote server for the GNOME keyring password. It's not supposed to do that, I told it not to require confirmation before allowing remote users to take over! Subsequent connections to the VNC service do not prompt a password. Previous releases of Ubuntu did not behave this way, I was simply able to log in after boot. [Bug 655436] [NEW] Vino service advertised twice in Remote Desktop client
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vino My understanding is that Vino advertises its availability on the network using Avahi. I'm not sure exactly in which package this problem exists, but I see martin's remote desktop listed twice in the Remote Desktop client on another system. [Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness
If we can't pull the patch fully into Maverick for testing, can we possibly have someone setup a PPA containing a normal kernel for Lucid and Maverick except for having this patch applied to it? I would love to see if this patch helps the responsiveness of my desktop at work. I am always under memory pressure because I keep a VM running, and I frequently have heavy disk I/O situations due to log parsing. I think I'm a great tester for this. The problem I'm already foreseeing here is that there isn't really a quantitative test for success. All I can say is whether or not my desktop feels more responsive. How would I actually measure responsiveness? Those types of issues are nearly impossible to reproduce reliably IMO. -- Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
Forgive me if I'm confusing this bug with the one about moving buttons back to the right side of the window, but I actually like this order: gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string minimize, maximize:close It seems to me that there is some argument is around having the close button so close to non-destructive menus. So why not move it back on the right and leave the other two on the left? I'm finding that I kind of like having minimize and maximize over on the left, just not close so much. FWIW, I do prefer minimize on the left of the maximize button. I can't really explain why.. it just seems right. It could just be an i've- always-had-it-this-way thing. I can't be sure. Would it be possible to put a new tab in the Appearance capplet to control position of the window manager buttons? Maybe if we make this easily configurable (via GUI) it will enough for people? It'd be nice to have a little preview of what the top border would look like and allow the buttons to be dragged to different positions. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 535022] Re: minimize/maximize icons depend upon default panel layout
I agree that the up/down implication of those button images is wrong. Minimize is NOT always down - I always move my window list to the top panel first thing after setting up a new computer. This would also be wrong for someone who likes a vertical panel. I think it's probably to hard (impossible?) for the theme to detect the position of the window list's containing panel, so generic images would be most appropriate. I think using - and + sounds good for minimize and maximize. Not sure what to do for restore. Also, the up implication doesn't make sense to mean maximize no matter where my window list is. [Bug 381059] Re: use compcache by default
This is still an issue. Probing it creates /dev/ramzswap0, which you can call swapon on. Using it is simple: # modprobe ramzswap # swapon /dev/ramzswap0 -p 100 Doing that simple stuff will cause an area of compressed ramdisk to be your highest priority swap disk. A nice init script with a configurable variable to specify the size to use is all that is needed. A little configuration dialog to put in the Administration would be nice. [Bug 480746] Re: Slowest mouse speed still to fast for high DPI mouse
I am also affected by this problem. I just replaced a POS wheel mouse that moved nicely with a Logitech M705 laser mouse. The laser sensor naturally reports movement data a lot more often per inch of real mouse movement than the wheel mouse did. The mouse driver should have taken that into account when deciding how to translate mouse movement data into cursor movement. FYI I have tried turning mouse sensitivity and acceleration down all the way in gnome-mouse-properties. This is not sufficient to make the mouse comfortable usable. It moves FAR too fast for my liking. I've also tried 'xset mouse 0 0' (which I know should have done the same thing) just to be sure g-m-p was doing what I thought it was. No change. I think it might be a shortcoming in the evdev driver: is the driver even aware of the resolution of your optical mouse's sensor? If not then a bug should be filed against evdev. [Bug 397145] Re: id_rsa not detected as x-pem-key
Wow! That finally explains why I could never get gnome-keyring to manage my ssh key: I renamed id_rsa.pub to something useful for being scp'd over to other hosts. I created a symlink and it works great now! Fantastic! So with seahorse/keyring properly recognizing my SSH key now I care a lot less about this bug, but it is still a bug. It should get fixed at some point. Here's a totally different issue I would like fixed (maybe I should file a bug directly with Seahorse?): Seahorse should update their documentation to properly explain what the criteria are for getting your SSH key to work. Saying that id_rsa is auto-detected would be a good start, and mentioning the hard requirement that id_rsa.pub be present would be good too. Currently the info I was going on is based on a l.g.o page which give me this BS about expecting a certain mime type for the file. Nothing about it being auto-loaded. Just to be clear though, this bug is officially about the fact that the mimetype data for x-pem-key is not being registered properly. [Bug 473000] [NEW] AD1984a enters power save and never wakes up
Public bug reported: I've been having trouble for days with my audio not working. I couldn't figure it out: I completely stopped GDM, and used aplay from a command line to try to play directly to my alsa device. I knew from alsamixer that all my volumes were up and nothing was muted. I knew because alsa wasn't playing anything directly that it wasn't a pulseaudio issue. Today I realized that when I opened my lid (the laptop, an HP 8530w, normally lives in a dock) the audio mute button was red (which indicates mute, as opposed to blue which means not-mute). I found bug 456769, which has led me to the conclusion that this button is indicating the audio controller's power state. To make this better, pressing the button seems to power up the controller. Yay! I can hear sound! ... for about 10 seconds until the thing goes into power save again. There is some interesting behavior here I'm observing: - I can hear the expected pop sound when the sound controller powers down. - I *sometimes* hear a pop when I manually power up the device again by pressing the physical mute button. - The physical mute button color doesn't always change immediately to reflect the change in power state (I hear a pop, button remains blue for a while), but if I try to play something while I know the sound to be powered down (because I heard the pop with no subsequent pop to indicate powering back on) then the color will immediately change to red. No sound plays. - The button color is changing between red and blue at irregular intervals that to not seem related to when I am playing sound. - So far I have successfully played a sound after the initial power down of the device until I manually unmute it by pressing the physical mute button. I have already tried two of the common recommendations for resolving this. I have set module parameters power_save=0 and model=laptop (appropriate for my AD1984a, according to alsa's documentation). Strangely power_save=0 does not prevent my card from powering down. I can still hear it popping after a brief time. I have done 'sudo alsa force-reload' and a full reboot to test these settings. I'm baffled why power_save=0 didn't resolve things. This problem started sometime in the last 2 weeks I think, after or around the time Karmic entered RC. Possibly related to updating to alsa- driver 1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu5 or 1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu4. [Bug 387833] Re: Evolution should minimize to Indicator Applet
I would also love to see Evolution able to do something like this, but it's not exactly an easy thing to do. Implementing this would mean that the mail checking system from Evolution needs to be pulled out of the UI (probably the entire mail account management system) and daemonized. The daemon would have to be able to run in your session (similar to how evolution-data-server does now) and regularly check your mail sources for new messages. Evolution would have to re-think their association between accounts and various account-specific settings. Some of the things that are currently account-specific might have to become account-neutral in order for Evolution to properly integrate with this new daemon. A dbus interface would be required for the mail checking service to notify various UIs (Evolution, indicator-applet, maybe even tinymail eventually?) of checking-mail and new-mail events. The service also needs to be able to handle check-account and check-all-accounts requests. Probably various other things too. This is not even close to how Evolution is currently designed afaik. I'd love to see a bug filed upstream for this. It's a major app rewrite (what I propose is anyway). [Bug 433289] Re: Ubuntu boot screen shifts to top left of screen after login
I see the same thing. In my case it is because gnome-settings-daemon is changing my screen resolution for me at login time. Xsplash doesn't seem aware that the screen geometry has changed and just remains its original size. In my case this looks much worse: not only am I activating a second screen, but the first one changed to a much higher resolution. Only about 1/4 of the first screen has the xsplash window displayed, the rest of the display area shows my background image tiled (which looks bad). Eventually Nautilus receives its own signal about the screen resize event and fixes that for me, but for about 5 seconds things look pretty lame. -- Ubuntu boot screen shifts to top left of screen after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 397145] [NEW] id_rsa not detected as x-pem-key
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: seahorse-plugins I'm trying to make gnome-keyring work as my SSH key forwarding agent properly but I've run into trouble with how my public key is detected. It seems to be the case that gnome-keyring will automagically recognize any file matching ~/.ssh/id_rsa or ~/.ssh/id_dsa if they are properly detected as supported mime types. Regardless of why I'm trying to do this, the fact is that ~/.ssh/id_rsa is detected as type application /octet-stream. I've tried my best to track down the problem but everything seems to be configured correctly. The shared-mime-info stuff for seahorse is found in /usr/share/mime/packages/seahorse.xml (which belongs to seahorse- plugins). It clearly should be catching my id_rsa file as type application/x-pem-key: mime-type type=application/x-pem-key magic priority=90 match type=string value=-BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY- offset=0/ match type=string value=-BEGIN DSA PRIVATE KEY- offset=0/ match type=string value=-BEGIN ENCRYPTED PRIVATE KEY- offset=0/ /magic /mime-type My private key file starts exactly as that mime-type definition says it should. Here's an octal dump of the top of that file: $ od -a id_rsa 000 - - - - - B E G I N sp R S A sp P 020 R I V A T E sp K E Y - - - - - nl 040 P r o c - T y p e : sp 4 , E N C 060 R Y P T E D nl D E K - I n f o : 100 sp D E S - E D E 3 - C B C , 2 7 120 B C 9 D 4 5 E E 5 2 3 3 E D nl nl ... I even copied the string out of the XML file and pasted it at the top of my id_rsa file. This had no affect on how the file is detected: $ xdg-mime query filetype id_rsa application/octet-stream An extra test: $ cat test -BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-ctrl-D usern...@host:~/.ssh$ xdg-mime query filetype test application/octet-stream What exactly is broken about this mime type rule? If the mime type were detected properly then it would automatically get associated with seahorse if I try to open it. I'd also be able to import it into seahorse. After reading over comments by other people in those bugs, I've noticed that my initrd does not contain a file conf/conf.d/cryptroot. This file seems to be what tells the initrd which devices to try to unlock. Each time my initrd is generated I get two warnings about invalid lines: $ sudo update-initramfs -u -k all update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.29-020629rc5-generic cryptsetup: WARNING: invalid line in /etc/crypttab - cryptsetup: WARNING: invalid line in /etc/crypttab - update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-8-generic ... And why is this line invalid now but wasn't before mid-January when this started happening? What does a valid line look like now? Even after updating for the package fix referred to in bug #287879 my issue is still not fixed. I could really use some help debugging this! Here's my current state: Every time I boot my system, I'm dropped to an initrd busybox prompt with a notice that my root device can't be found. The root device can't be found because the initrd hasn't bothered to try opening my luks- encrypted partition yet. A simple cryptsetup luksOpen... from the prompt will unlock the partiton, then my LVM volumes are automatically found and activated. I've typed one command and pressed ctrl+d and everything continues roughly as usual. After I've manually unlocked my encrypted partition, I'm actually asked for the passphrase for it a few seconds later (even though it's already unlocked). This says to me that the cryptsetup stuff in the initrd is happening far too late. [Bug 318892] [NEW] initrd no longer activating encrypted filesystems
Public bug reported: I'm running a setup with encrypted LVM on my laptop. Until very recently, I was prompted for the passphrase to the encrypted partition (/dev/sda2) early during the boot process, and once it was opened my volume group (vg00) was activated automatically. Boot would continue normally until the login screen. Starting about 2 weeks ago, I stopped being asked for the passphrase. I'm dropped to a busybox prompt telling me that the root filesystem can't be found, but it never even tried to open the encrypted partition. Two simple commands ('cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda2 main' and 'lvm vgchange -a y vg00') fix the issue. So why am I not being prompted for the passphrase like I used to be? Nothing is actually missing from the initrd, and I actually am prompted for the passphrase later (far too late) in the boot process. I just press enter several times until it gives up and everything continues normally past that. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- initrd no longer activating encrypted filesystems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 271373] [NEW] xrandr commands REALLY slow to complete
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xrandr I upgraded to Intrepid on Friday, and since then my monitor configuration has been a mess. I've hot a laptop connected to a dock. The dock has two external monitors connected. First observation, the primary screen selection has changed since Hardy. Although it's still the same two outputs active by default (TMDS-1 and LVDS), the login prompt appears on LVDS, which has its lid shut. Oh well. I can work around that. That's not this bug. When I login, I open a terminal and execute the same script I've run for the past several months to properly enable my external monitors: xrandr --output LVDS --off xrandr --output TMDS-1 --off # (this was added recently to try to work around this problem) xrandr --output VGA --auto --pos 0x0 --fbmm 537x345 xrandr --output TMDS-1 --auto --right-of VGA --fbmm 537x345 Executing this series of commands takes about 3 minutes to complete, rather than the previous 20 seconds or so. The screens flicker several times more than they used to. At two points it actually looks like it's done thinking (waits for 20 seconds or so), then continues where it left off. [Bug 117742] xine can't load smb:// urls from nautilus' Open With...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xine-ui I have many video files stored on a remote system which I access via SMB/CIFS. I know that Xine-ui supports these because I can drag the icon from Nautilus onto the video window, and they play perfectly. What I cannot do is associate the file with Xine so that double-clicking it opens in Xine. Firstly, Nautilus seems to disregard file association rules for non-local files. I'll set that aside and take it up with the Nautilus devs later. Main problem: when I specify to open the file with Xine, it opens Xine but forgets to open the file with it. I don't see any errors or indications of what it tried to do. This problem affect Gentoo's version of xine-ui as well. [Bug 113868] Re: bump xrandr to 1.2
xserver-xorg-1.3.0 and xrandr-1.2 hit gutsy sometime yesterday. I've deleted my xorg.conf and successfully started gdm! This is pretty exciting :-D Only problem so far is that it didn't auto-recognize my synaptics touchpad, it loaded the regular mouse driver. I'll file another bug for that. FYI - I'm using a Radeon 9250 mobile graphics chip. It loaded the radeon driver and got the resolution correct and DRI even works. Next step is testing the output hotplug stuff, which I *think* should be in this release. -- bump xrandr to 1.2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 113868] bump xrandr to 1.2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xrandr xrandr 1.2 has been our for several months now and I was surprised to find that it wasn't in feisty. Can we get this new version for gutsy? 1.2 allows you to up-size your X screen greater than the size it started with. This is extremely useful for laptop users who start the system on the local flat panel and plug into a dock later with a larger screen. Also to keep in mind, xorg-server 1.3 was release earlier this month (May) and it allows input and output hotplug. It will auto-configure input devices and displays at runtime without restarting the X server. That will be a huge improvement for Ubuntu to have. ** Affects: xrandr (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- bump xrandr to 1.2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 109275] Single user mode starts too many services
Public bug reported: I feel that single user mode in Ubuntu is either poorly named or just doesn't do the right stuff. There is FAR too much started in runlevel S: * netwokring. How can a system be single user when you have a network interface up? * ipsec * portmap (if nfs-utils is installed) * pppd * pcmciautils - I don't plan to use my pc card slots while in single user mode. * X11-common * udev. It loads all kinds of stuff via hotplug events, i.e. your network interfaces. I don't want my wireless adapter up when I'm trying to do system maintenance. Single user mode should be locked down so that only one console is opened and there is no other means of accessing the system. This is intended for extreme situations since there is no password required to get here. If you want all this stuff to open in some optional runlevel I'd think it would be better to have a runlevel 3 with all the normal everything except X. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Single user mode starts too many services https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109275 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105026] Re: seahorse bump to 1.0.1
Seahorse 1.0.1 seems to have found its way into Feisty last night so looks like I won't have to do that stuff after all. Unfortunately the new version doesn't solve my bug so I'll have to take that up with the Seahorse devs. Maybe I'll file another Ubuntu bug with a link to the Gnome bug if anyone is interested. -- seahorse bump to 1.0.1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 84221] ubuntulooks causes massive memory use at startup for Firefox 3 trunk build
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks See this bug at Mozilla: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=367509 There seems to be some issue with the ubuntulooks engine that causes Firefox 3 trunk builds to show memory leak behavior when FF starts. When I launch a Firefox trunk build all my ram gets consumed and then my swap more slowly, then eventually all the memory usage drops off and Firefox opens. The problem goes away completely when I change my theme to clearlooks. Also, my performance in Firefox seem MUCH better with clearlooks than it did with ubuntulooks. The UI is much more responsive and Google Maps scrolls faster. There is a backtrace for the offending thread in the Mozilla bug but I don't know how much it will help. ** Affects: ubuntulooks (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- ubuntulooks causes massive memory use at startup for Firefox 3 trunk build https://launchpad.net/bugs/84221 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 52426] Re: Upgrade to current upstream stable release (3.2) requested
I've run into 5 plugins in the past week which seem to be 3.2-only, so I'm about to remove edgy's Eclipse-3.1 and download a new version directly from the website. It'd be really nice to get the new version in for Edgy, but if not then I really would like to see it for edgy+1!
