[Bug 742164] Re: detects bad alignment but doesn't correct it

[Bug 1106780] [NEW] precise ldc 0.9.2+hg1655-0ubuntu4 depends on nonexistent libllvm2.7

2013-01-27 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

On current Ubuntu Precise:

mbp@joy% sudo apt-get install ldc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 ldc : Depends: libllvm2.7 but it is not installable
   Recommends: libtango-ldc-dev but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

There doesn't seem to be any libllvm2.7 in Precise? This may need to be
rebuilt against a later llvm (if it's compatible.)

[Bug 597236] Re: netstat statistics overflow

2012-08-26 Thread Martin Pool
Re-confirmed in Precise.

The patch from Debian has been merged to upstream http://net-
tools.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=net-tools/net-
tools;a=commitdiff;h=f1f89328cccf92824ab436fa43068603eb43e34d.

Since the last upstream release was eleven years ago, I don't think it's
a good idea to wait for the next one. Maybe Ubuntu and Debian could
cherrypick this fix or take a snapshot from trunk?

[Bug 971174] [NEW] segfault on exiting trivial program linked to dmalloc

2012-04-01 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

see http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-devel-
disc...@lists.ubuntu.com/msg13281.html for context:

This trivial program:

#includedmalloc.h

int main (int argc, char *argv[]) {
malloc(1);
return 0;
}

compiled with

gcc -o tst tst.c -ldmalloc

crashes on exit:

#5  0x77af11fa in ?? () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5
#6  0x77af1a72 in dmalloc_free () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5
#7  0x77771ba4 in vfprintf () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
#8  0x77831580 in __vsnprintf_chk () from

#9  0x77aebf7e in loc_vsnprintf () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5
#10 0x77aec022 in loc_snprintf () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5

#13 0x77af1a72 in dmalloc_free () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5

#17 0x77aec022 in loc_snprintf () from /usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5

I guess dmalloc is out of date with something that changed in libc.

I tested on Precise; apparently it is also broken on Oneiric.

The user reports upstream is unresponsive.

Perhaps dmalloc should be removed from Precise, if it's not too late?

interacting with programs inside the terminal, so it has a enable menu

[Bug 956655] Re: libvirt dnsmasq causes runaway chain reaction

2012-03-16 Thread Martin Pool
mbp@joy% cat /var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
server=10.0.3.1
server=192.168.178.1
server=10.0.3.1
server=192.168.178.1

I think this is an interaction between a few things that are themselves
reasonable:

 - network-manager depends on dnsmasq, and makes it the default nameserver in
/etc/resolv.conf
 - lxc also sets up a dnsmasq for the guest, forwarding to the host
 - lxc(?) inserts into dhclient.conf
   ./dhcp/dhclient.conf:prepend domain-name-servers 10.0.3.1;
 - so the host ends up querying the guest, which loops back to the host

This might be just something in my own set up, and obviously I can avoid
it here, but it does look like it could bite others.

[Bug 956655] Re: libvirt dnsmasq causes runaway chain reaction

2012-03-16 Thread Martin Pool
It's arguably a dnsmasq/lxc problem that this can occur, but I think the
most relevant problem is Launchpad's setuplxc changing my dhclient
configuration.

I guess this was done so that the host could see launchpad.dev or
whatever.

But:

 - changing basic networking of the host without warning people seems rude to
say the least

[Bug 956732] [NEW] x201 iwlwifi drops out under heavy load

2012-03-16 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

On a Thinkpad x201, on today's Precise:

wifi works reliably in general, but under heavy load it will fail:
receiving no traffic, but not giving any obvious errors

To produce enough load, I started downloading several Ubuntu ISOs from
remote servers. This works for a variable period of time, sometimes a
few minutes, topping out at 2MB/s, which is about my ADSL peak speed.

At moderate load it can work all day, including across suspend/resume
cycles, so at least the symptoms are different to bug 948235 and bug
956401, though perhaps the cause is the same.

Running 'sudo rmmod iwlwifi sudo modprobe iwlwifi' gets it working
again.

This seems like it might be a regression but I'm not sure. I'll try an
old kernel.

[Bug 956732] Re: x201 iwlwifi drops out under heavy load

2012-03-16 Thread Martin Pool
It looks like (bearing in mind this is somewhat intermittent) that this
problem does not exist in the upstream kernel:

Linux joy 3.3.0-030300rc7-generic #201203101735 SMP Sat Mar 10 22:36:28
UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

(at least, I have downloaded a few hundred MB at 1.5MB/s over wireless
with no problems yet.)

actually, the upstream kernel does eventually suffer the same problem

[Bug 956655] [NEW] dnsmasq spams out thousands of queries

2012-03-15 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

I've repeatedly seen dnsmasq get into a situation where it repeatedly
spams out many many queries. I'm not sure why; perhaps it's got into a
state where it's sending queries to itself? I'm not precisely sure how
to reproduce it but it's something to do with my machine suspending and
resuming and/or bringing up/down wired and wireless interfaces.

[Bug 956655] Re: dnsmasq spams out thousands of queries

2012-03-15 Thread Martin Pool
So my machine had, every time I booted up, several instances:

mbp@joy% ps wwwax -o pid,ppid,cmd |grep dnsm
 1752 1 dnsmasq -u lxc-dnsmasq --strict-order --bind-interfaces
--pid-file=/var/run/lxc/dnsmasq.pid --conf-file= --listen-address 10.0.3.1
--dhcp-range 10.0.3.2,10.0.3.254 --dhcp-lease-max=253 --dhcp-no-override
--except-interface=lo --interface=lxcbr0
 1779 1 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq -u libvirt-dnsmasq --strict-order
--bind-interfaces --pid-file=/var/run/libvirt/network/default.pid --conf-file=
--except-interface lo --listen-address 192.168.122.1 --dhcp-range
192.168.122.2,192.168.122.254
--dhcp-leasefile=/var/lib/libvirt/dnsmasq/default.leases --dhcp-lease-max=253
--dhcp-no-override
 2780  1385 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq --no-resolv --keep-in-foreground --no-hosts
--bind-interfaces
--pid-file=/var/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dnsmasq.pid
--listen-address=127.0.0.1 --conf-file=/var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
--cache-size=0 --proxy-dnssec
 3242  3179 grep --color=auto dnsm
mbp@joy% ps 1385
  PID TTY  STAT   TIME COMMAND
 1385 ?Ssl0:00 NetworkManager

and it looks like 1752 and 2780 were furiously talking to each other,
and also flooding the network. 1752 was sending to 127.0.0.1:53 and
2780 received that message and echoed it back to 10.0.3.1 plus my
external DNS server:

[Bug 956655] Re: dnsmasq spams out thousands of queries

2012-03-15 Thread Martin Pool
So my machine had, every time I booted up, several instances:

mbp@joy% ps wwwax -o pid,ppid,cmd |grep dnsm
 1752 1 dnsmasq -u lxc-dnsmasq --strict-order --bind-interfaces
--pid-file=/var/run/lxc/dnsmasq.pid --conf-file= --listen-address 10.0.3.1
--dhcp-range 10.0.3.2,10.0.3.254 --dhcp-lease-max=253 --dhcp-no-override
--except-interface=lo --interface=lxcbr0
 1779 1 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq -u libvirt-dnsmasq --strict-order
--bind-interfaces --pid-file=/var/run/libvirt/network/default.pid --conf-file=
--except-interface lo --listen-address 192.168.122.1 --dhcp-range
192.168.122.2,192.168.122.254
--dhcp-leasefile=/var/lib/libvirt/dnsmasq/default.leases --dhcp-lease-max=253
--dhcp-no-override
 2780  1385 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq --no-resolv --keep-in-foreground --no-hosts
--bind-interfaces
--pid-file=/var/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dnsmasq.pid
--listen-address=127.0.0.1 --conf-file=/var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
--cache-size=0 --proxy-dnssec
 3242  3179 grep --color=auto dnsm
mbp@joy% ps 1385
  PID TTY  STAT   TIME COMMAND
 1385 ?Ssl0:00 NetworkManager

and it looks like 1752 and 2780 were furiously talking to each other,
and also flooding the network. 1752 was sending to 127.0.0.1:53 and
2780 received that message and echoed it back to 10.0.3.1 plus my

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2012-03-15 Thread Martin Pool
I don't think this really is actually fixed in Unity in Precise, or
rather, bizarrely, it seems intermittently fixed. This morning, it was
working ok, but now I have to be exactly over the very narrow border to
resize the windows.

I have this on intel arrandale, so I don't think it's connected to the
graphics driver. I do use Chrome, so that does seem to be the common
factor.

Re: [Bug 940603] Re: white box randomly shows up at top left corner blocking applications from using stuff under it

2012-03-12 Thread Martin Pool
Well, I do run chrome a lot, so it does overlap. istr chrome does
create some (should be) unmapped windows for its own purposes and
perhaps that's not what unity's expecting. However, it persists even
after exiting chrome.

[Bug 952563] [NEW] blank display after suspend from resume

2012-03-11 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

same hardware as bug 830355:

after coming back from suspend, the internal laptop display is backlit
but blank. switching consoles, etc, doesn't help. it does reboot on
ctrl-alt-delay and there are blinks of wlan activity so I think it did
wake up.

[Bug 952688] [NEW] two launcher icons for gvim

2012-03-11 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Recent regression in precise:

I ran one copy of gvim, but I have two Vim icons in the launcher.
Clicking either of them raises the gvim window. I haven't had more than
one copy of gvim open during this session. Quitting it makes both icons
go away.

The second icon doesn't appear when it's first launched, only some time
later. I'll try to notice when that is.

This has happened a few times in the last several days.

[Bug 952689] [NEW] blank white windows on top of everything else

2012-03-11 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

There's some kind of bug in Unity where empty white windows appear over
my desktop, and they apparently can't be got rid of other than by
restarting unity. They have drop shadows. Clicks pass right through
them. I don't know how to induce this but it has happened several
times.

[Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up with external monitors (x86_64)

2012-03-09 Thread Martin Pool
Current status in Precise seems to be:

 - works reliably with ` xrandr --output DP1 --mode 2560x1600 --set audio off`
 - fairly reliably **does not** work if I set the external monitor direct to
2560x1600 from the monitors control panel, I'm guessing because that does auto
audio and gets it wrong.

Re:[Bug 923552] Re: no way to create logical volume within lvm

2012-03-06 Thread Martin Pool
I reproduced this in a new VM, which would have had a blank disk.
On Mar 7, 2012 2:02 AM, Colin Watson cjwat...@canonical.com wrote:

 I don't seem to be able to reproduce this in a VM with a blank disk.
 But I notice from your most recent attachments that your disk wasn't
 blank to start with - so maybe that has something to do with it? I'll
 try again once this install has completed.

 (Mind you, I'm using the i386 server image because I didn't expect that
 would make a difference. I might download and try the amd64 alternate
 image if all else fails.)

[Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up with external monitors (x86_64)

2012-02-23 Thread Martin Pool
This is definitely improved but not fixed. Most of the time the
external monitor comes up ok, but sometimes when I switch a running
session on to the external monitor it stays irretrievably blank. Here's
a kernel log with debugging on of those transitions.

I have not yet worked out the pattern or a reliable reproduction.

flipping to a different workspace and then back will make the app get

[Bug 936762] Re: setuplxc jams if your shell is not bash

2012-02-20 Thread Martin Pool
Digging in to this a bit, I think the bug can be said to be in the lxc
templates, where lxc-ubuntu has

do_bindhome()
{
rootfs=$1
user=$2

# copy /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and /etc/group entries into container
pwd=`getent passwd $user`
if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
echo 'Warning: failed to copy password entry for $user'
return
else
echo $pwd  $rootfs/etc/passwd
fi
shad=`getent shadow $user`
echo $shad  $rootfs/etc/shadow

# bind-mount the user's path into the container's /home
h=`getent passwd $user | cut -d: -f 6`
mkdir -p $rootfs/$h
echo $h $rootfs/$h none bind 0 0  $path/fstab

so that copies the pwent, including the shell, with no consideration
whether it will exist

2012-02-20 Thread Martin Pool
So this could be, and maybe should be, addressed in both lxc and
launchpad setuplxc.

* launchpad can work around this by just forcing the user's shell back
to bash or by installing zsh (which would be slightly nicer for me, and
any other users, and make things very slightly slower to download.)

* The lxc-ubuntu template probably needs to take care of this some how.
I don't know how. Perhaps parsing the pwent line, and installing the
right shell? I think it would be inappropriate and dangerous to change
it there.

[Bug 936762] Re: lxc-ubuntu template sets user shell, without checking it's installed

2012-02-20 Thread Martin Pool
ok, having read the actual diff http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
branches/ubuntu/precise/lxc/precise/revision/68 I see you do actually
try to install the shell. I misunderstood your comment #3. Thanks very
much.

[Bug 937285] [NEW] no eth0 arp after resume on x201

2012-02-20 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

(This feels like something that might be intermittent or hard to
reproduce or not the kernel's fault but I'm going to report it anyhow.)

On precise, on a Thinkpad x201, after coming back from suspend this
morning, I can't establish a dhcp lease on eth0. The router is up and I
can connect to it over wlan0 but for some reason not eth0.

tshark shows some traffic (attached), including, oddly, some incoming
traffic.

To avoid networkmanager problems, I also tried directly adding an ipv4
address to eth0, and a route to my gateway, and then pinging the
gateway. I saw a lot of outgoing ARP packets but no responses, and ping
shows 'host unreachable.'

re-plugging the cable doesn't help.

$ sudo mii-tool eth0
SIOCGMIIREG on eth0 failed: Input/output error
SIOCGMIIREG on eth0 failed: Input/output error
eth0: negotiated 1000baseT-FD flow-control, link ok

'ip l set eth0 down' and up doesn't help.

after rebooting, the eth0 connection is flapping on and off, according
to the network panel indicator
