[Bug 989496] Re: UnicodeDecodeError during backup due to non-utf8 translation
I think I have found a fix. The bug does not happen only with invalid UTF-8 filenames, you simply need UTF-8 filenames and a UTF-8 locale. For example, in collections.py:810, there is: log.Debug(_(File %s is not part of a known set; creating new set) % (filename,)) On my system, when this fails (see error below), the _() string is a str object encoded in UTF-8; filename is a unicode object. The error below happens while Python encodes filename into an ASCII str object. If the _() string is a unicode object too, no encoding into a str object happens at this stage, and everything works. This can be achieved by setting gettext up differently in __init__.py, by passing unicode=True to gettext.install(). This is the solution recommended by the author of gettext for Python: http://www.wefearchange.org/2012/06/the-right-way-to-internationalize-your.html This change requires a few modifications in other places so that only unicode strings are passed to the logger. I'm attaching a diff of quick and dirty changes I applied to demonstrate the idea. Any chance to get some attention for this bug? This makes duplicity completely unusable on my system for more than a year. This is with duplicity 0.6.21 on Fedora 19. [Bug 989496] Re: UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0xd1 in position 117
The ä character in itself should not be a problem. It's probably not in the right encoding, but you don't see the problem because the text editor you used to read the file (gedit?) has automatically chosen the right encoding. You can open the text in LibreOffice and select UTF-8 for encoding to make sure the characters are correct. If that's not the case, install the convmv package and use it to convert the invalid filenames to UTF-8. You have to know the encoding the filenames are using. [Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root
Sorry, I should have made clear I was speaking from an upstream (GNOME) point of view. I've not said Ubuntu wouldn't fix the problem (even if I know they won't). Ubuntu ships a version of users-admin that's more than a year old, so even if I fixed things upstream you wouldn't notice. My advice (to Ubuntu) is that they move to the new GNOME control center users applet. As for the specific problem of running as root, AFAIK any newly installed system comes with a non-root admin account. And something I *did* fix in users-admin when it was still developed is that it will not allow you to remove the last admin account. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685215 Title: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/685215/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation
Matthew: the automated codec installation already exists in Totem actually. Just try to open a AAC file, and it will prompt you to install the codec. The Fluendo DVD plugin should just be registered with the correct information (to say: hey, I read encrypted DVDs), and Totem should query for such plugins. This is probably not done ATM upstream because only Ubuntu sells the Fluendo plugin by default, but would likely be easy to do. AFAIK, Totem is already smart enough to start playing right after the codec has been installed. [Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation
OK, the problem is, Fluendo doesn't sell a codec, but a full-fledged DVD player that competes with Totem. So we can't install the required codecs transparently. Something to check, though, is whether installing their DVD player is enough to allow GStreamer apps like Totem to read encrypted DVDs too. I suppose it's the case. This would mean the Fluendo DVD player package could be technically advertised as a plugin, which would allow it to be installed from Totem. I don't remember the rationale for that restriction, if there is one. users-admin is a cross-platform tool, so one would have to check that all platforms allow upper case letters before making such a change. Anyways, the gnome-system-tools are deprecated now, and nobody is working on them, so I don't see this change happening. [Bug 879453] Re: users-admin tool enforces policy it has no authority over
The control center User accounts applets is the successor, but it doesn't show groups to the user. Ideally, choosing whether users are Admins or Normal should be enough for everything. If people need to user groups, they must be able to use the command line, because only these operations require it anyway (and are only hacks). users-admin still lives and can be used by admins that would need to set user groups, but it's not really good for that since e.g. it doesn't handle LDAP nor mass configuration. [Bug 692568] Re: Printer shouldn't be paused after hp CUPS backend failed
Sorry, I don't have these printers offhand, and anyway the bug is not easy to reproduce. I think it would be simpler to look at the code and see what error codes lead to suspending the printer. IMHO, there are almost no reasons to stop the printer: if an error occurs, kill the current job, or maybe all jobs waiting in the queue, but don't prevent new tasks from being printed unless you're absolutely sure that will result in serious damage/waste. There's also an issue that in corporate environments, it's probably OK to suspend printers to avoid people sending jobs that won't work and will waste paper, while in home desktops, people would prefer to be allowed to print, and check the result. This could probably be fixed in the GUI by showing a Printer is suspended due to failure notification, with a simple way to resume it if the user has admin rights. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692568 Title: Printer shouldn't be paused after hp CUPS backend failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/692568/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

;-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/855387 Title: unity greeter Login action wrongly translated To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-pack-gnome-fr/+bug/855387/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 87101]
(In reply to em_te from comment #81) Another (more difficult) way is to first launch the attachment as editable and then set the readonly flag 10 seconds later. This is more likely to confuse apps and users than anything. OpenOffice should be fixed to have a easier to understand GUI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/87101 Title: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/87101/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
