[Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root

2016-09-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
It's actually dead since upstream archived the project several years
ago. XFCE should have took it up, or moved to another tool.

Anyway, you shouldn't need to run it as root.

I think you can replicate the problem by using the fr_FR.utf8 locale.

[Bug 989496] Re: UnicodeDecodeError during backup due to non-utf8 translation

2013-08-08 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I think I have found a fix.

The bug does not happen only with invalid UTF-8 filenames, you simply
need UTF-8 filenames and a UTF-8 locale.

For example, in collections.py:810, there is:
log.Debug(_(File %s is not part of a known set; creating new
set) % (filename,))

On my system, when this fails (see error below), the _() string is a str object
encoded in UTF-8; filename is a unicode object. The error below happens while
Python encodes filename into an ASCII str object. If the _() string is a
unicode object too, no encoding into a str object happens at this stage, and
everything works. This can be achieved by setting gettext up differently in
__init__.py, by passing unicode=True to gettext.install(). This is the solution
recommended by the author of gettext for Python:
http://www.wefearchange.org/2012/06/the-right-way-to-internationalize-your.html

This change requires a few modifications in other places so that only
unicode strings are passed to the logger. I'm attaching a diff of quick
and dirty changes I applied to demonstrate the idea.

Any chance to get some attention for this bug? This makes duplicity
completely unusable on my system for more than a year.

[Bug 1050509] Re: Duplicity doesn't handle non-utf8 filenames well

2012-09-13 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Much thanks for taking care of this regression here and in the other
bug! I still think this bug deserves a fix, or at least a better logging
of the problematic file. If for some reason a user ends up with a file
with an invalid name, there's no way of finding out this is the problem
from the GUI, let alone identify the file and fix its name. So backup is
impossible.

[Bug 989496] Re: UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0xd1 in position 117

2012-09-05 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The ä character in itself should not be a problem. It's probably not
in the right encoding, but you don't see the problem because the text
editor you used to read the file (gedit?) has automatically chosen the
right encoding. You can open the text in LibreOffice and select UTF-8
for encoding to make sure the characters are correct.

If that's not the case, install the convmv package and use it to convert
the invalid filenames to UTF-8. You have to know the encoding the
filenames are using. Testing several settings is possible without any
risk for the files as long as you do not add the --notest option.

[Bug 1025094] Re: Change Advanced User Settings Window is taller than my screen and I can't press 'ok'.

2012-07-26 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The obvious information to provide is the size of your screen in
pixels...

Anyway, gnome-system-tools is deprecated, replaced by the new GNOME
control center, so I don't think this will be fixed, sorry?

[Bug 967830] Re: gnome-shell crashes on empathy chat window open

2012-06-05 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Developers need a proper backtrace with symbols to debug the problem.
The backtrace that is attached does not have them.

Could you enable Apport, reproduce the problem, and file another bug
using the dialog that pops up after the crash? Then, just mark this bug
as a duplicate of the new one. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport#How_to_enable_apport

Thanks!

[Bug 805700]

2012-04-13 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
(In reply to comment #27)
Thanks, Chris. That's what 'bisect' means! :)

Can you or anyone tell me how to 'download the source for both of those into a
single git tree and recompile both'? I am willing to help further, but I
 don't
have time to spend hours or days working out how to do this by myself - please
do not just point me to a tutorial.
You just need to grab Linus's git tree, all versions are there. So you should
run:
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git

You can see the tags corresponding to versions here:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=tags

Good luck! ;-)

[Bug 947784] Re: Remade username doesnt ask keyring to make password

2012-03-16 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
So this is the real bug, not the other way round.

Anyway, I don't think the chances are high that anybody will fix this
kind of relatively minor bugs in 10.04. People are already too busy with
recent versions to backport such fixes to versions that are in
maintenance mode. Users management has changed much in new versions, so
it's not worth fixing something that has disappeared since then. Sorry.

2012-03-13 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I no longer use Ubuntu, and if you ask me I don't really care. And I
couldn't guess from the original description whether the user files were
removed or not.

Anyway, I was completely mistaken by your report. There's no bug at all, just
try what I asked you:
What happens if you create a completely new user?
When creating a new user, the keyring password is set to be the login password,
so the password is never asked. It's been like that for ages, and it's not
specific to re-creating users.

[Bug 947784] Re: Remade username doesnt ask keyring to make password

Did you check the folder was actually deleted? This makes no sense to
me, if the files are gone the keyring configuration is gone too; the
users tool has no power on this. What happens if you create a completely
new user?

The question is, do you remove User123's home directory? If not, then
the exact same configuration will be used by the recreated user. That's
not a bug.

[Bug 805700]

2012-02-18 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
(In reply to comment #21)
Thanks, Milan - yes, that info is worth a lot. :)

So .. the Lucid version of Xorg correctly loads the 'intel' driver for kernel
2.6.32.28 (probably need to repeat test with the current Xorg?)

It is likely (but to be confirmed) that Xorg incorrectly loads 'vesa' for the
 following kernel ..
 [DIR]v2.6.35.7-maverick/29-Sep-2010 11:26 -

(which is about 90 versions later)
So, what's the last version you can test that works? Also, why do you say to
be confirmed? The info is only interesting if you're absolutely sure you're
right. ;-)

2012-02-12 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Could somebody report this to Intel developers? The mail sent to the
kernel mailing list seems to have been missed. You can file a bug to the
X.org bug tracker at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg

Feel free to paste a link to the mail, which has detailed information:
http://markmail.org/message/msojtkj4o4klho3t?q=lkml+list:org.kernel.vger.linux-kernel

If you don't do that, the bug will likely persist in 12.04, as it seems
to be still present in kernel 3.2. ;-)

Check with 'mount' that / isn't mounted read-only. The best option is
probably to set a root password by running 'passwd' as root user in
recovery mode, and then to reboot in normal mode, log in as root, and
add your user to the sudoers group.

[Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root

2011-11-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Sorry, I should have made clear I was speaking from an upstream (GNOME)
point of view. I've not said Ubuntu wouldn't fix the problem (even if I
know they won't). Ubuntu ships a version of users-admin that's more than
a year old, so even if I fixed things upstream you wouldn't notice. My
advice (to Ubuntu) is that they move to the new GNOME control center
users applet.

As for the specific problem of running as root, AFAIK any newly
installed system comes with a non-root admin account. And something I
*did* fix in users-admin when it was still developed is that it will not
allow you to remove the last admin account.

[Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation

2011-11-25 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Matthew: the automated codec installation already exists in Totem
actually. Just try to open a AAC file, and it will prompt you to install
the codec. The Fluendo DVD plugin should just be registered with the
correct information (to say: hey, I read encrypted DVDs), and Totem
should query for such plugins. This is probably not done ATM upstream
because only Ubuntu sells the Fluendo plugin by default, but would
likely be easy to do.

AFAIK, Totem is already smart enough to start playing right after the
codec has been installed.

For the technical details, see:

[Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation

2011-11-25 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
OK, the problem is, Fluendo doesn't sell a codec, but a full-fledged DVD
player that competes with Totem. So we can't install the required codecs
transparently. Something to check, though, is whether installing their
DVD player is enough to allow GStreamer apps like Totem to read
encrypted DVDs too. I suppose it's the case.

This would mean the Fluendo DVD player package could be technically
advertised as a plugin, which would allow it to be installed from Totem.
Users would be able to use Totem as usual, or start the newly installed
Fluendo player if they prefer.

2011-11-14 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Window manager warning: Failed to read saved session file
Maybe you have a saved session in LDAP accounts that doesn't include
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1? Please try with a completely clean home.

If that doesn't work, you should start polkit-gnome-authentication-
agent-1manually on a LDAP account, and see if it crashes or says
something.

Hm, sorry, I can't really help as I'm no longer using Ubuntu. Have a
look at /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-authentication-agent.desktop,
and check everything is right there. You may want to copy this file to
~/.config/autostart, but it shouldn't be needed.

[Bug 577563] Re: Automatic login fails and computer hangs (Lucid)

2011-11-10 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Speaking as the (former) maintainer, this is really a bug in users-
admin, but it's no longer developed since it's been replaced with the
new GNOME control center applet upstream. (The new applet doesn't allow
setting a password-less account.) If the bug had been reported against
the gnome-system-tools, I'd had fixed the bug back in 2010, but now,
it's too late for me... :-/

I don't think the workaround should be added in GDM, because I don't
think it would be easy due to how PAM works.

[Bug 888355] Re: users-admin should not allow creation of users with encrypted home who aren't asked for password on login

2011-11-10 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 577563 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577563

Indeed. But users-admin is no longer developed, since it's been replaced
with the new GNOME control center applet upstream. (The new applet
doesn't allow setting a password-less account.)

I don't think the workaround should be added in GDM, though, because I

bug as duplicate of the other, and moving the other to gnome-system-

[Bug 880772] Re: [network-settings] Please backport gnome2 proxy settings dialog

2011-10-24 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Well, you're right, but that's not really a bug: it's just that the new
dialog isn't completely finished yet. Of course, it would have been good
to avoid regressions like that, but developers upstream are aware of the
problem, and keeping this bug open won't help them to fix it. They won't
bring back the old dialog anyway.

If it doesn't work with Firefox, please file a new bug against that
package, *that* is really a precise bug.

[Bug 879453] Re: users-admin tool enforces policy it has no authority over

2011-10-21 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
I don't remember the rationale for that restriction, if there is one.
users-admin is a cross-platform tool, so one would have to check that
all platforms allow upper case letters before making such a change.
Anyways, the gnome-system-tools are deprecated now, and nobody is
working on them, so I don't see this change happening. Users shouldn't
have to deal with Unix groups on normal systems - if they do, that's a
bug in the relevant packages.

[Bug 879453] Re: users-admin tool enforces policy it has no authority over

2011-10-21 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The control center User accounts applets is the successor, but it
doesn't show groups to the user. Ideally, choosing whether users are
Admins or Normal should be enough for everything. If people need to user
groups, they must be able to use the command line, because only these
operations require it anyway (and are only hacks).

users-admin still lives and can be used by admins that would need to set
user groups, but it's not really good for that since e.g. it doesn't
handle LDAP nor mass configuration. We'd need a tool designed
specifically for that...

[Bug 692568] Re: Printer shouldn't be paused after hp CUPS backend failed

2011-10-17 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Sorry, I don't have these printers offhand, and anyway the bug is not
easy to reproduce. I think it would be simpler to look at the code and
see what error codes lead to suspending the printer. IMHO, there are
almost no reasons to stop the printer: if an error occurs, kill the
current job, or maybe all jobs waiting in the queue, but don't prevent
new tasks from being printed unless you're absolutely sure that will
result in serious damage/waste.

There's also an issue that in corporate environments, it's probably OK
to suspend printers to avoid people sending jobs that won't work and
will waste paper, while in home desktops, people would prefer to be
allowed to print, and check the result. This could probably be fixed in
the GUI by showing a Printer is suspended due to failure notification,
with a simple way to resume it if the user has admin rights.

[Bug 276384] Re: Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring

2011-10-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
That's the same problem. *Conceptually*, pam-mount or any other
encrypting method cannot read something encrypted without the
authentication mechanism providing a secret *that isn't stored on the
computer*. So the authentication device must store the password in some
hard-to-read place itself for this to work, and I don't think it's the
case ATM.

[Bug 125017] Re: change defaults for dialup default route and nameservers

2011-10-06 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
network-admin has been shipped in the gnome-network-admin package
separately for a while.

We should probably keep this bug open until we check it's fixed, but
since I don't maintain the gnome-system-tools anymore, and they've been
deprecated in GNOME 3.0, nothing will be fixed anyway. And some people
from the bug control team have sometimes considered good practice to
massively ask for confirmation with no reason, leading to bugs being
closed automatically. So... In the future, NetworkManager should support
dial-up modems, and maybe that feature has already been merged.
