[Bug 1923305] [NEW] LibreOffice 6.4 OpenType Features unusable

2021-04-10 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

When using OpenType features (Format - Character - Feature) from a
capable font like EB Garamond 12, LibreOffice automatically enables a
fractional style, which essentially makes all numerics unusable, and
there's no obvious way to disable this in the GUI once you've opened the
Features dialog.

There are two workaround, as all OpenType features get disabled when
selecting another font, and back again.

And, of course, one can remove :frac=1 manually from the font name
field.

This has however been fixed in LibreOffice 7.0 onward, but somehow
wasn't cherrypicked into 6.4.x, even though the change seems trivial:

https://github.com/LibreOffice/core/commit/d28c9d56df8a2629321bda116a6d2dcfa587d160

Please consider including this cherrypick in a future package for Ubuntu
Focal.

The patch won't apply directly due to a filename typo getting corrected,
which needs to be uncorrected in the patch:

vcl/source/font/OpenTypeFeatureDefinitionList.cxx
vcl/source/font/OpenTypeFeatureDefinitonList.cxx

[Bug 932834] Re: Enable equalizer

2014-12-06 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
As I've noted before, Trusty already has the equaliser module available
in the standard pulseaudio package:

$ dpkg -L pulseaudio | grep eq
/usr/lib/pulse-4.0/modules/module-equalizer-sink.so

So at least in Trusty this is actually fixed. All the critical hard to
fix blumping is now in position.

Having a GUI frontend for it, is a completely different matter, which
has nothing to do with this bug, and has nothing to do with pulseaudio
(to which this bug applies).

If one were to have a proper equalizer GUI frontend in Ubuntu, it would
have to be integrated into unity-control-center's sound panel:

$ dpkg -L unity-control-center | grep -i panels | grep -i sound
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/unity-control-center-1/panels/libsound.so

So for that a feature request would have to be filed against the unity-
control-center package.

[Bug 1387303] Re: regression: gnome-keyring components can't be disabled anymore

2014-10-30 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
This issue isn't about whether gnome-keyring is useful or not.

But there are indeed many reasons for not wanting to use it for anything
but secret store indeed, some as listed by Dmitri.

The fact that gnome-keyring doesn't implement some of these features is
rather inherent to the process, where either SSH or GPG need to advance,
before GNOME is in a position to follow them. Resulting in natural
lag. The fact that GNOME Keyring is only a small part of GNOME doesn't
make it any better with regard to prioritization.

The fact that GNOME (Keyring) is a usability focused project is indeed a
valid reason to prefer the real ssh-agent or gpg-agent as they are
security focussed projects and presumably should be more trustworthy.

As for the remark about pkcs10, I'm not sure that actually being used by
anything. The main use-case for it seems to be Firefox/Thunderbird which
use NSS, which doesn't seem to be hooked up to GNOME Keyring's PKCS10
component by default.

Regardless of defaults, if I understand well, the following will revert to the
old behavior:
echo manual /etc/xdg/upstart/gnome-keyring.override

Allowing any user to disable to individual services like so:
echo 'X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false'
/etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring-gpg.desktop
echo 'X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false'
/etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring-ssh.desktop
echo 'X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false'
/etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring-pkcs10.desktop

[Bug 1387303] [NEW] regression: gnome-keyring components can't be disabled anymore

2014-10-29 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

GNOME Keyring is by default a rather invasive service, which meddles
with security sensitive processes invasively. This may or may not be
wise depending on a users situation.

One particular case is GNOME Keyring's gpg-agent implementation, which
is incomplete and therefore doesn't support GPG's OpenPGP smartcard
support. gpg simply fails (with smartcards) when GNOME Keyring is
impersonating gpg-agent...

So to be able to use OpenPGP smartcards on Ubuntu, one needs to disable
GNOME Keyring from impersonating gpg-agent, which for quite some time
now has been trivial to effectively do:

echo 'X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false' /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-
keyring-gpg.desktop

With GNOME Keyring's recent update (3.10.1-1ubuntu4.1) in Trusty, this
seems to have been broken by the addition of:

/usr/share/upstart/sessions/gnome-keyring.conf

So it seems the /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring files are either being
ignored, or the started process is supplanted by the process started by
the upstart session config.

What is unclear to me is what the upstart session configuration is
supposed to achieve? And if it is meant to supplant the xdg/autostart
files, those should probably have been removed to prevent them from
causing any confusion as to how gnome-keyring is started/managed.

Presuming the upstart session is meant to stay, I would suggest to
remove the /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-keyring-*.desktop files to prevent
confusion as mentioned above. And in my opinion a mechanism should be
provided so users can control which gnome-keyring components '--
components=pkcs11,secrets,ssh,gpg' are activated using some
configuration file in /etc, as files in /usr aren't meant to be user
edited.

[Bug 1335538] Re: Flickcurl no longer works due to Flickr API Requiring HTTPS

2014-08-27 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Debian seems to have fixed this:
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/f/flickcurl/flickcurl_1.25-3_changelog

And it has passed into Ubuntu Utopic:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/utopic/libflickcurl0

Ideally that package should be backported to Ubuntu Trusty.

Utopic has shotwell 0.18.1, which has the flickr https fix, with a few

[Bug 946480] Re: Remastering Precise fails on resolv.conf

2012-10-06 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
The problem with UCK is that UCK can only be definitively tested/fixed
for a ubuntu release once it has been released, at which point the
repositories are frozen. Chicken. Egg.

Anyhow, there are a bunch of bugs still outstanding. So ideally we'd
need a new upstream release of UCK, though I'm afraid the official
developers seem strapped for time.

[Bug 1035679] Re: Ubuntu Installer crashes during installation

2012-08-17 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Ah, great thanks.

I just tested the daily live cd for today, and it installed just fine
(with ecryptfs enabled).

So I did another updated ISO with UCK, and that still failed.

Conclusion, it's highly likely something is going wrong with UCK.

2012-08-15 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
I just tried it with a vanilla image, and there the bug isn't
reproducable.

However that doesn't prove UCK is the problem here, but it doesn't
disprove it either.

I did a (failed) install with ubiquity --debug, and the larger debug logs are

[Bug 1035679] Re: Ubuntu Installer crashes during installation

2012-08-15 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Also considering the problem seems to be related I'm not sure how using
UCK would break that. Over UCK's history most bugs have been related
to upstream changes with regard to updating kernels/bootloaders/services
(SysV init-Upstart).

Consider this may be a regression introduced by updates, this might turn
out to be problematic for 12.04.1...

Is there any source of semi-official daily 12.04 images (just as they
are built daily before release)?

[Bug 1035679] Re: Ubuntu Installer crashes during installation

2012-08-14 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
So I did a new customized CD with UCK, for which the problem is
reproducable (so it's not a one-time fluke).

Considering that the problem occurs in the Creating User... phase, I
ran the installer again, but now with ecrypfs disabled, and I got no
errors that way. So this is likely an ecryptfs related issue.

Is there any chance some regression with regard to ecryptfs was
introduced?

Is there a way (like a parameter to ubiquity) with which it will show me
what commands it's executing (including the commands output)?

[Bug 1035679] Re: Ubuntu Installer crashes during installation

2012-08-13 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Well, I don't think it is reproducable with the uncustomized cd... As my
current theory is one of the updates for Precise which I pulled in might
be causing this.

I've customized ISOs earlier without any problems, do mind, it's not
weird customization, mostly just pulling in updates and including some
extra packages (think gstreamer-* etc).

Here's the ISO with the issue:

http://files.pcode.nl/isos/broken/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64-20120811-remastered.iso

And a video recording of the installation (7:00-8:00 is the interesting bit):
  http://files.pcode.nl/isos/broken/ubuntu_1204_ubiquity_fail.ogv

It seems to fail at Creating user...

While I realize that you're not going to support all kinds of customized
CDs, I wouldn't mind digging in a bit myself (because there's either a
issue with Ubiquity, or with the Ubuntu Construction Kit (UCK), so
something has to be fixed somewhere).

Would you mind giving me some pointers on how to best debug this issue?

2012-08-11 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

[Bug 851982] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompWindow::id() from getPaintMask() [compizminimizedwindowhandler.h] from unity::UnityWindow::glPaint()

2012-07-01 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
As I've mentioned this is an exceptionally annoying issue, so I've
cherrypicked the fix into the current release version of Unity, and did
a PPA for it:

https://launchpad.net/~pmjdebruijn/+archive/unity-testing

Previously Unity would crash about 50% of the time whenever I closed
Darktable (a photography application), with the fixed Unity version from
the above PPA, I opened and closed Darktable about ten times without any
crashes yet.

So I guess this is confirmed fixed.

I'm currently not maintaining the hpfall package anymore, as all my
systems have an SSD now. It's an extremely simple package, where
hpfall.c is gotten from the upstream kernel tarball. I used to update
hpfall.c with each ubuntu release, using the kernel version from which
the hpfall.c file came.

[Bug 932834] Re: Enable equalizer

2012-04-09 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Are there concrete issues?

Something like the pulseaudio equalizer could be very well used to
compensate to an extent for crappy laptop speakers. So it could
potentially be commonly usable.

By disabling the building on the pulseaudio equalizer it makes it quite
hard to experiment with it (regardless of any bugs), since a full
pulseaudio rebuild is required to get the equalizer support.

[Bug 946480] [NEW] Remastering Precise fails on resolv.conf

2012-03-04 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

The current UCK version fails on resolv.conf when remastering Precise
Beta1.

As /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf on
Precise.

Since /run is bind-mounted from the host OS, the source and destination
resolv.conf are the same files, thus cp returns an error code, making
uck fail.

Since /run is bind-mounted it makes the entire copy of resolv.conf
superfluous, so it can be removed:

I've just applied that patch to the version of Compiz in Natty, build
locally tested it, and the bug seems fixed. I've pushed my source

[Bug 853253] [NEW] Please sync darktable-0.9.2 from debian wheezy/testing

2011-09-18 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

Currently Oneiric has Darktable-0.9 in it's Universe repositories.
However 0.9 was quite a bumpy release, and has it's share of bugs.

Debian Wheezy/testing has Darktable-0.9.2 in their repos, which has a
LOT of bugs fixed.

Please sync.

[Bug 853253] Re: Please sync darktable-0.9.2 from debian wheezy/testing

2011-09-18 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
I'm a member of the Darktable development team.

Darktable 0.9 was VERY buggy...

Darktable 0.9.2 should have little or no new features.

And as I indicated heaps and heaps of important bugfixes.

We are working on 0.9.3 now, which includes more bugfixes, but will
probably not be available in time. But we'd like at the very least to
get 0.9.2 included instead of 0.9

2011-09-18 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
We have no _pure_ bugfix releases, there is always some minor feature
slippage...

But, we never introduce major changes in point releases. So regressions
are unlikely.

And like I said, 0.9 was a pretty bad release all round (in hind-sight).

[Bug 43105] Re: Fuzzy Font Rendering

2010-06-25 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
I think we're mixing several problems here...

OpenOffice.org and MonoDevelop used to use a badly hinted version of
DejaVuSans-Light, which was the root cause of the problem...

Now the light fonts are nolonger in the base dejavu-sans package, so you
don't have it installed by default anymore...

So I think this bug can actually be closed...

[Bug 585496] Re: The default MP3 profile is broken

2010-06-14 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Well first, this is still a bugfix, since the original intention has
always been to use VBR... The slowing down is just a side-effect.

Then, I highly doubt the quality is similar...

And this brings up another point altogether, since the presets are
called CD Quality, it's way to low quality anyways, for MP3 it should
probably be Q4.

And Q5 for Vorbis. But this is a whole different discussion.

[Bug 585496] Re: The default MP3 profile is broken

2010-06-14 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Huh? The _average_ bitrate is about the same...

But that's the whole point of variable bitrate encoding...

VBR conserves bits when they are not needed (silent pieces, etc), and
uses them whenever the encoding gets hardest...

Constant bitrate does not produce constant quality
Variable bitrate can approach constant quality

[Bug 585496] [NEW] The default MP3 profile is broken

2010-05-25 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

By default the CD Quality, MP3 profile is broken.

It seems to encode to 128kbit CBR, while it intends to encode to VBR Quality 6.
Changing the VBR Quality has no effect at all.

I was told the 'lame' encoding plugin has been deprecated, and it's being
replaced by 'lamemp3enc'.

I attached a patch which changes the default, including the adding of a xing
header. This will make sure Totem and others will properly display the file's
bitrate and length.

I hope this can be resolved in a future update for Lucid.

[Bug 33288] Re: Evince doesn't handle columns properly

2010-05-07 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
I just tried that document too... But I noticed it was generated by
Cairo... which is a graphical library, not a text processor...

So I wouldn't be surprised if the PDF itself is the problem here... But
this is just speculation...

Has anybody tested that PDF in the official Adobe Acrobat Reader?

On a sidenote the sample PDF I first posted moved:

[Bug 127315] Re: F-Spot puts photos in Photos folder not Pictures folder

2010-04-25 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
The current patch (tested with 0.6.1.5) even seems to put photo's in
~/Pictures/Photos/year/... instead of ~/Pictures/year/... when no
location has been explicitly set.

That's right. We just change the base directory.

Heh, you do realize this is really really really broken behavior?

[Bug 568634] [NEW] Ambiance causes odd comboboxes in OpenOffice.org

2010-04-22 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

When using Ambiance or Radiance, the comboboxes (and most buttons) in
OpenOffice.org look odd... It causes a kind of border around the
comboboxes/buttons which shouldn't be there.

It gives a general sloppy feel to OpenOffice.org, the light-themes
themes are the only ones that seem to be causing this effect in
OpenOffice.org.
