[Bug 966122] Re: White rectangle in top left corner

2012-04-02 Thread Pete Goodall
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 940603 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/940603

I am seeing the exact same thing, and have so for a while. From what I
can tell it has to do with Chrom{e,ium} 18.x and notifications. The
white box appears when I have a gmail notifications specifically. I
have been seeing this for a while, and have been trying to figure it
out. From what I can tell it is not a window as you can click through
it and I can't use Alt-grab to move it. It simply seems to be a region
of the screen that won't repaint. Video memory corruption? Ah, I also
noticed it has a drop shadow, so it kind of acts like a window - or
maybe compiz is simply treating it as one.

For troubleshooting I exited Chromium (18.x) and the white rectangle
doesn't go away. Even exiting all apps doesn't make it go away. It
does go away if I logout and back in again. I then installed the stable
version of Chrome (which was at the time 17.x). I didn't see this for a
while, but it returned when Chrome was upgraded to 18.x. Further, I
noticed it appears after a gmail notification comes up. Specifically, I
had several gmail notifications appears in a row and the white rectangle
appeared. I exited Chrome, logged out and back in again and tried to
reproduce by having several people ping me in IRC (I am using a web-
based irc client) but couldn't make the rectangle appear. This morning
I got a single notification from gmail and the white rectangle appeared.

This appears to me to be a problem with Chromium, but I'm struggling to
get good troubleshooting information as I can't get any information on
the window.

[Bug 940603] Re: white box randomly shows up at top left corner blocking applications from using stuff under it

2012-04-02 Thread Pete Goodall
I can't seem to get the rectangle on the white box with the same
dimensions. Also, I've tried using Super-d when the blue rectangle
looks like it is where the last Chrome notification came up and I get no
output in ~/.xsession-errors. I'm not sure what super-d is supposed to
do as it never seems to have an effect on ~/.xsession-errors. Should I
be running compiz from the command line? Did I miss a step?

[Bug 949024] [NEW] The same region of my screen goes blank

2012-03-07 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I haven't figured out when exactly this happens, but it happens
frequently. At some point I notice a white rectangle overlaid in the
upper right corner of my screen. It doesn't seem to be caused by any
application because quiting all applications doesn't make it go away.
The only way I can make it go away is to either logout and login again,
or restart compiz from a terminal. I run:

`compiz --replace /dev/null 21 `

In a terminal to restart compiz. Even after doing this the blank white
rectangle will re-appear at some point later. Sorry I can't pin point
how to reproduce, but let me know if there something more I can get you.

[Bug 949040] [NEW] After disconnecting a second monitor compiz can't find certain apps in the current workspace

2012-03-07 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I plug in my monitor into the VGA port and have Chromium running with
multiple windows. I drag some of the Chromium windows to the secondary
display then later on I disconnect the secondary display without moving
those windows manually back to the primary display. It use Alt+Tab to
go to another application window (not Chromium) and when I got to
Alt+tab back Chromium doesn't show up. It does show up in the launcher
on the left, so I can switch to windows that way but it still doesn't
work in Alt+tab.

For some reason if I switch to another workspace and then back to the
first workspace it now recognises Chromium. I've used Chromium as an
example, but I have seen this with LibreOffice and Firefox.

[Bug 947025] [NEW] Windows maximise only on the secondary display

2012-03-05 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Often when I try to maximise a window that is on the primary display it
will move to the secondary display instead. Here is what I did just
now:

I have a Chromium window that I want to move from the secondary display
to the primary display, so I drag the window over to my primary display,
and drag the title bar to the top of the screen.

Result: The window maximises, but on the secondary display instead.

Same scenario, but instead of dragging the window to the top I use the
window controls to maximise the window.

Result: The window maximises, but on the secondary display instead.

Same scenario, but I try to maximise on half the primary display by
dragging to the left (or right). I'm doing this just to test really.

Result: It works as expected and the window changes dimensions to fit
in the left (or right) half of the primary display.

Workaround:
If, after dragging the window to my primary display, I resize the window to
make sure that it fits fully w/in the dimensions of the primary display it will
maximise on the primary display as expected. Therefore, I suspect the problem
is that some part of the window is hanging off-screen and Compiz assumes I want
to move the window to the other display. This is a poor assumption, and quite
honestly very frustrating. My secondary display is quite a bit larger than the
primary and this means this scenario happens frequently.

[Bug 831436] Re: Upon opening GNOME Activity Journal never gets past Loading journal

2011-08-31 Thread Pete Goodall
Log file attached. I didn't restore the old db, but now that the fresh
db must have some content I'm getting the same hang. Please let me know
if you need a log from both the original database (with lots of content)
and this database (with little content).

[Bug 831436] Re: Upon opening GNOME Activity Journal never gets past Loading journal

2011-08-26 Thread Pete Goodall
So I stopped in the zeitgeist daemon (`zeitgeist-daemon --quit`), backed
up my zeitgeist database (~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite) and
deleted my zeitgeist database. Then I started zeitgeist-daemon again
(`zeitgeist-daemon --replace`) and started gnome-activity-journal. Now
gnome-activity-journal starts fine, but of course I have no history.

I stopped zeitgeist-daemon, restored my backup of the zeitgeist database
and started zeitgeist-daemon in debug mode this time (`zeitgeist-daemon
--log-level=DEBUG --replace`) and piped stdout and stderr to a file. I
see the former behaviour in gnome-activity-journal (stuck at Loading
Journal) and as I watch a tail of the log file I see after about 10
seconds a bunch of dbus timeout errors.

I will attach the log file. According to zeitgeist-daemon the database
is fine:

[DEBUG - zeitgeist.sql] Core schema is good. DB loaded in
1.32012367249ms

...but I'm getting dbus timeouts:

[ERROR - dbus.proxies] Introspect error on :1.316:/org/gnome/zeitgeist/monitor/1
: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not rec
eive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a rep
ly, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired
, or the network connection was broken.
[DEBUG - dbus.proxies] Executing introspect queue due to error
[ERROR - dbus.proxies] Introspect error on :1.316:/org/gnome/zeitgeist/monitor/2
: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not rec
eive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a rep
ly, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired
, or the network connection was broken.

That is just a sample. I get that several times in the log. Is this a
problem with dbus then? Any thoughts?

Btw, this was milestoned for 0.8.1, but I'm now running 0.8.1:

$ dpkg-query -W zeitgeist*
zeitgeist 0.8.1.1-1
zeitgeist-core 0.8.1.1-1
zeitgeist-datahub 0.7.0-0ubuntu3

[Bug 828593] Re: Gwibber window scrolls too fast when using the scrollbar

2011-08-24 Thread Pete Goodall
The effect is (IMHO) rather jarring. It makes it very difficult to
scroll through the updates because it is constantly jumping. For me, at
least, this is unusable. I don't know if anyone else sees it that way.

[Bug 823594] Re: ubuntu-bug xorg ironically causes apport to freeze and leave junk on the display until it's killed off

2011-08-24 Thread Pete Goodall
@Bryce - I ran the script attached as requested and the script completed
with no errors, but also no dialogs. I don't know if this is what you
expect or not, but the output is below.

$ ./source_xorg.py  /dev/null
 lsb_release -sc
attach_gpu_hang_info
attach_xorg_package_versions
attach_dist_upgrade_status
attach_graphic_card_pci_info
attach_hardware

attach_input_device_info
 xinput --list
 gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals
 setxkbmap -print

I just tried reproducing the bug and it no longer crashes. However, I'm
not positive I used the same options (so maybe that changes the tests /
questions?)

[Bug 831436] [NEW] Upon opening GNOME Activity Journal never gets past Loading journal

2011-08-22 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

When I open GNOME Activity Journal I see a Loading journal message,
but that message never goes away. At the bottom I see there is activity
show on the graph, but it never loads in the main window. This also
means I don't have access to the configuration button. In the terminal
I see this message:

Using the zeitgeist module from /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/zeitgeist
/usr/share/gnome-activity-journal/src/main.py:206: Warning: g_object_set_qdata:
assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
  self.show()

This is the only clue I have, but haven't found out what is causing this error
(or even if it is relevant).

[Bug 828586] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse no longer works, but is listed as Connected

2011-08-18 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I upgraded some of the bluetooth components and now my
bluetooth mouse doesn't work. When I click on the bluetooth indicator
and mouse over Bluetooth Laser Travel Mouse I see the option to
Disconnect (indicating the system thinks it is currently connected).
I tried restarting the bluetooth service with `sudo service bluetooth
restart` and that does not resolve the issue. I then tried removing the
device from the configured devices list in the GNOME Bluetooth Settings
and re-added it but this still did not resolve the issue. Any hints on
which log I can supply for more information would be helpful. I cannot
seem to find any information on why the system thinks the mouse is
connected, but the mouse has no effect what so ever.

[Bug 828593] [NEW] Gwibber window scrolls too fast when using the scrollbar

2011-08-18 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Trying to read down my list of posts in Gwibber is very difficult
because of a number of bugs. The one I'm reporting here is using the
scrollbar to scroll through the list is in no way smooth and skips in
big jumps. The effect is I cannot read while scrolling, and because it
jumps so jarringly quickly I don't know if I have missed any posts. We
need to implement smooth scrolling.

[Bug 828599] [NEW] Scrollwheel doesn't actually scroll the view of posts in Gwibber

2011-08-18 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

When trying to scroll through the posts in the Gwibber window I tried
using a scrollwheel (actually the middle button on a Lenovo trackpoint,
but it acts like a scroll wheel). Though the orange positional
indicator on the rights slowly down the view in the window doesn't
actually move. The only way to scroll is to use the keyboard or use the
scrollbar (and I already filed a bug that using the scrollbar is no
usable).

[Bug 825250] [NEW] Remove Force fallback mode when not using GNOME Shell

2011-08-12 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

If you go to the GNOME Control Center and start System Info there is a
Graphics option. Inside there is an option to Force fallback mode. I
have been using this to try using Ubuntu 2D, but the option only works
when logging into GNOME Shell. Therefore, to avoid confusion we should
not display this option when not using GNOME Shell. Yes, this is
somewhat advanced but we have a very technical audience and this could
cause a lot of confusion and wasted time.

[Bug 820850] [NEW] Ubuntu One Music Store misidentifies some purchases as removed

2011-08-04 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Some of my first purchases from the Ubuntu One Music Store are showing
up in the Downloads section of the U1MS as removed from my library, but
the tracks are still present. Why does U1MS think these tracks don't
exist in my library if they do? How do I tell U1MS these tracks do in
fact exist? I don't want to click the re-download link as that would be
a waste of one of my re-download tokens.

[Bug 821120] [NEW] Ubuntu One Music Store duplicates previously purchased tracks when purchasing full album

2011-08-04 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I previously purchased one song from an album. I liked the track and
decided later to purchase the entire album. Now I have two copies of
the same track in my Library. Both the single track and the album were
purchased through Ubuntu One Music Store, so U1MS should be smart enough
not to duplicate that previous purchase.

[Bug 819682] [NEW] apport-gtk crashes when trying to report an xorg bug

2011-08-02 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I was trying to report a bug on xserver-xorg-video-intel and when
apport-gtk gets to step 14 (afaict) a dialog appears but doesn't draw
properly. From there the bug reporting procedure doesn't continue and
it never gets to the point where the browser opens up. As there are a
lot of questions asked when reporting xorg bugs I suspect the process
never gathered enough information to get to that point. Here is the
last thing I saw in the terminal:

** (apport-gtk:2144): WARNING **: expected enumeration type GtkWindowType, but
got GtkMessageType instead
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/overrides/Gtk.py:353: Warning: value

[Bug 819684] [NEW] No video after logout on Lenovo x220

2011-08-02 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Not every time, but many times when I logout the screen goes blank and
never comes back. I try switching to a text login (i.e. vt2) and I
still get nothing. The only way to rectify the situation is to switch
to a text vt - even though there is no video - and press the power
button to initiate a controlled shutdown (not a hard power off). Not
sure what trouble shooting information I can get you so please let me
know if you need additional information.

[Bug 818018] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon refuses to start

2011-07-29 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I have just done a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 from the daily live CD
from 29th July 2011. After installation, I could not connect to any
wireless network or even my mobile broadband connection. I restored my
home directory to see if maybe it was just the lack of a keyring and
that still didn't help. Checking the wireless connections I noticed
that a) none of my previously saved networks were listed and b) the one
I had been trying to connect to was listed, but had no password filled
in. I filled in the password for the WPA2 network and connected just
fine. I checked seahorse to see if the password was saved and was
informed seahorse couldn't connect to gnome-keyring-daemon. When I try
to start the gnome-keyring-daemon from the command line, here is what I
get:

$ gnome-keyring-daemon
gnome-keyring-daemon: error getting process capabilities, aborting

I'm not sure how to debug this, so please let me know what other
information I can give you.

[Bug 791169] Re: Picture disappearing when Display Port is connected

2011-06-13 Thread Pete Goodall
Fwiw, I had the same problem, but also couldn't get things working in
Windows. I updated the Intel drivers in Windows and now it works in
Ubuntu. The updated drivers must be updating the firmware or something.
Frustrating that one needs to update in Windows, but at least it is a
plausible workaround for now.

[Bug 794013] [NEW] When in dual-screen mode desktop is not painted / repainted with second generation Sandy Bridge graphics

2011-06-07 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When connecting an external monitor the panel appears at the top of the
external monitor, but the desktop area is completely black. In
addition, there is a black strip at the top of my primary screen. As I
mouse over the launcher on the left the tool tips appear and never go
away and some of the icons are scrambled. Will attach a screenshot
that will likely demonstrate the conditions.

I tried using the Ubuntu, Ubuntu Classic, Ubuntu Classic (No effects)
and Unity 2D sessions and only the Ubuntu session exhibited this
behaviour. Dual monitors worked fine in all the other sessions, so
afaict this is not a problem specific to xorg, the Intel drivers or
compiz (though I can't conclude it doesn't involve those components).

Please let me know what other information would be useful.

[Bug 788532] [NEW] U1 music store plugin severely delays banshee startup

2011-05-26 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Everytime Banshee starts a blank window appears, then after a few
seconds it turns grey and stays grey for about 20 seconds, then finally
the UI populates. I ran Banshee with --debug and piped the output to a
log file using tee. I watched the log file while Banshee starts and as
soon as all the plugins are loaded the U1 music store plugin start
iterating over every music file I have purchased checking whether it has
been copied to ~/Music. If the file already exists then the log says
something like not copying because this file already exists in
${HOME}/Music/. During this exhaustive check is when Banshee's window
goes grey (which is I think Compiz telling me the window is not sending
updates and inactive). As soon as those checks end, Banshee paints the
window and I can use Banshee.

I thought maybe the problem was that the files didn't need to be in
~/Music, so I deleted any files in ~/Music that were already in
~/.ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One/. On next startup the log file
showed the check w/o the not copying messages and Banshee started
somewhat faster (but by no means fast). I noticed I missed one file so
I deleted that file in ~/Music and reran Banshee and watched the log
file. This time again all the files were back in ~/Music and Banshee
took forever to start.

This may have one other side effect. I noticed that many of my
purchased songs show up multiple times in my Library. For instance, I
purchased a song call Hello by Martin Solvig and that appears in my
library five times. Looking in ~/Music I see the file has been copied
multiple times so I have the same file name with (n) appended to it. If
I delete the dups they just reappear over time.

This all seems very broken and wrong.

1. Why does the U1MS plugin need to check every time for purchases it has
already recognised?
2. Why do the files need to be copied to ~/Music when it could just watch
~/.ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One/
3. Why do I keep getting multiple copies of purchased songs even after I
delete the duplicates?

Will attach my latest log file.

[Bug 788532] Re: U1 music store plugin severely delays banshee startup

2011-05-26 Thread Pete Goodall
OK. The problem was that I had checked the option to copy music to my
library when importing. I unchecked that option and cleared out all
the duplicate files in the file system as well as in my music library.
Now startup is much faster. I guess the base bug is invalid, though
this is still pretty broken behaviour. Seems like a problem in Banshee
where it shouldn't import a file multiple times.

[Bug 753326] [NEW] two-finger scroll no longer works

2011-04-07 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: utouch

I had to re-install Ubuntu on my laptop. Before installing I was able
to scroll using two fingers instead of using edge scrolling. Now, with
the reinstall when two-finger scrolling is enabled I get no scrolling at
all (edge or two-finger). I noticed that utouch wasn't installed by
default, so I installed utouch and it still does not work (have rebooted
since then). Previously I didn't really need to install anything to get
this working (afaik) so I can only conclude this is a regression.

[Bug 745780] Re: multiple prompts from gnome-keyring

2011-04-04 Thread Pete Goodall
Ok, working though this I have a work-around, but not a solution.
Someone else can probably come up with a cause. :-) I have two
keyrings: login and default. In the file ~/.gnome2/keyrings/default the
default keyring is set as default, and that is where all my passwords
reside. The problem is that Ubuntu is expecting my passwords to be in a
keyring called login. If I delete the login keyring then the
keyring is recreated, but is of course blank and is *not* set as the
default keyring.

The way I got things working was to delete
~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring and renamed
~/.gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring to ~/.gnome2/login.keyring. Then I
edited ~/.gnome2/keyrings/default to say login is the default. This
might be a roundabout way of doing things, but this worked for me. Now
I just have to figure out why I'm not getting prompted for my keyring
password at all - even though that keyring definitely has a password.

[Bug 745047] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__ENUM()

2011-04-04 Thread Pete Goodall
A bit more information on this bug. It appears this only happens when
Mirror screens is enabled - which is the default behaviour. So
anytime you plugin a new external display or change an existing display
to mirror screens you can trigger this bug. I didn't see it on my
external monitor on my desk because it was setup as an extended screen.

[Bug 750404] [NEW] screen does not adjust correctly when moving an external monitor from left to right orientation

2011-04-04 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I plugin an external monitor and have a window maximised in the
secondary display that has a larger resolution than my primary display.
I open the gnome-display-properties tool and the secondary display is
currently configured to be oriented to the left. I move the secondary
screen to be oriented to the right and click [ Apply ]. Now I see part
of the window that was maximised in the secondary display over in my
primary display, and there is a large black area of my secondary display
that is black. I will attach a screenshot for illustration purposes.
Running `unity --replace` will fix the issue.

Sorry, I realised that screenshot was testing moving from right

[Bug 745780] [NEW] multiple prompts from gnome-keyring

2011-03-30 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

According to bug #637702 I should file a new bug for this. I'm using
Ubuntu 11.04 up to date as of yesterday (29th March 2011). I get
multiple prompts to unlock the keyring Default when logging in. Once
I authorise the first prompt I can connect to the my choses wireless
network and afaict there are no adverse effects to cancel the remaining
prompts. It is not always a fixed number, but I am usually prompted
five times for the password. Occasionally it is just two or four, but
it doesn't seem to be consistent.

When I open Seahorse I see I have two keyrings, login and default, and
default is the default keyring. The login keyring has no passwords
(afaict) but deleting it doesn't help. In fact the login key is just
recreated on next login. I checked for autostart files and have deleted
them from various places (~/.config/autostart/, ~/.kde/Autostart). Not

[Bug 744998] [NEW] unity crashes when an external projector is attached

2011-03-29 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I was giving a presentation and plugged in a VGA cable for a projector.
Unity immediately crashed, but no apport prompt came up. I dropped to
VT2 and ran `DISPLAY=:0 unity --replace` to restart unity. It took
about four times before compiz didn't end in a seg fault. Then during
the presentation unity crashed several more times. Will attach a core
dump from /var/crash/.

[Bug 740090] [NEW] Bluetooth dongle requires restart of bluetooth service

2011-03-22 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

When inserting my bluetooth dongle the bluetooth applet appears, but is
greyed out. When I click on the applet it just says, Turn on
bluetooth. If I click Turn on Bluetooth I get a dialog with a big
Turn on Bluetooth button but clicking the button does nothing. If I
restart the bluetooth service, however, everything works again. Seems
like a race condition to me.

[Bug 740095] [NEW] Need to delete and re-add bluetooth mouse on every reboot

2011-03-22 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Everytime I reboot I have to delete and re-add my bluetooth mouse. When
I oclick on the bluetooth applet I can see the Bluetooth mouse is
configured, but clicking on Connect does nothing (seemingly). If I
open the gnome-bluetooth-properties widow and move the mouse I can see
the mouse is trying to connect. The device flickers on and off
repeatedly as I move the mouse and/or click buttons but never actually
stays connected. I delete the configured mouse device and reconfigure
it and it works fine.

[Bug 730941] [NEW] Some icons disappear on launcher bar

2011-03-07 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

For some reason some icons on my launcher bar keep disappearing. Right
now I can't see the Tomboy and XChat icons, but sometimes everything
below the Ubuntu One icon (three down) disappears. I can't work out
what causes it. The icons still work and I can even right click on them
and the tooltips appear as I mouse over them. I'll attach a screenshot
that demonstrates the current problem.

The bug title should be altered to include the Files Lens. This is not
a wishlist item, imo. This is broken.

[Bug 571865] Re: syncing tomboy to ubuntu one fails

2011-02-28 Thread Pete Goodall
This bug is definitely *not* fixed. This is a very old and very
annoying bug. My Tomboy notes are amazingly importantly to me, and this
bug screws up years of work. Is someone going to look at the problem?

2011-02-28 Thread Pete Goodall
I'm getting the same error, but with StatusNet. I tried the work around
in the bug referenced in comment #3 and it doesn't work. I installed
gwibber-service-statusnet and restarted the gwibber service with sudo
gwibber-service restart. Still get the crash.

[Bug 723265] [NEW] Ubuntu One constantly loses connection to the server

2011-02-22 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

For some reason the Ubuntu One client is constantly disconnecting and
reconnecting to the server. In addition, it is not downloading my
files. Yesterday I had a fresh Ubuntu 11.04 install, fully updated, and
249 files in my personal cloud. about 45 files downloaded, and then
things seemed to stall. A further 9 files downloaded today, but I keep
getting notifications saying 0 / 199 files to download and that number
never drops.

[Bug 707353] [NEW] [STAGING] Broadcom 4313 firmware fails to load because it is not present

2011-01-25 Thread Pete Goodall
Public bug reported:

I'm using a Dell Inspiron m101z which was certified for use with both
Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. Previously the Broadcom chipset for wireless
used the proprietary drivers, but this card is now apparently
blacklisted and presumably covered by the new mac80211 drivers. The
card does not show up as available, but is idenfied by lspci.

$ lspci | grep Broadcom
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless
LAN Controller (rev 01)

Checking dmesg I can see that the firmware fails to load because the
specific filename is not present:

$ dmesg | grep brcm
[ 11.184346] brcm80211: module is from the staging directory, the quality is
unknown, you have been warned.
[ 11.192457] brcm80211 :03:00.0: PCI INT A - GSI 17 (level, low) - IRQ
17
[ 11.192468] brcm80211 :03:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 11.884891] brcm80211: fail to load firmware brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw
[ 11.884897] brcm80211: Failed to find firmware usually in /lib/firmware/brcm
[ 11.884942] brcm80211 :03:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 11.884962] brcm80211: wl_pci_probe: wl_attach failed!

I have tried installing the proprietary driver, but receive a message
that my card is blacklisted:

$ jockey-text --list
kmod:wl - Broadcom STA wireless driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use)
[auto-install]
xorg:fglrx - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled,
Not in use)

$ jockey-text --enable=kmod:wl
Additional Drivers
Searching for available drivers...

Sorry, the installation of this driver failed.

Please have a look at the log file for details.: /var/log/jockey.log

I installed both b43-fwcutter and b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer:

$ dpkg -l b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name   VersionDescription
+++-==-==-
ii b43-fwcutter 1:013-3Utility for extracting Broadcom 43xx firmwar
ii firmware-b43-i 4.150.10.5-5 Installer package for firmware for the b43 d

The firmware-b43-installer package does install firmware, but none of the .fw
files has the filename the system is looking for:

$ ls -l /lib/firmware/brcm/
total 368
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 269595 2010-11-18 21:20 bcm4329-fullmac-4-218-248-5.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1604 2010-11-18 21:20 bcm4329-fullmac-4-218-248-5.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 97376 2010-11-18 21:20 bcm43xx-0-610-809-0.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root180 2010-11-18 21:20 bcm43xx_hdr-0-610-809-0.fw

I tried making a symlink from bcm43xx-0-610-809-0.fw and
bcm43xx_hdr-0-610-809-0.fw (separately) to bcm43xx-0.fw, but that just
makes the system hang on boot.

Anyway, I'm out of ideas... This may just be a point-in-time bug, but I
figured it should be reported as this is a common chipset and a
previously certified device.

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

2011-01-04 Thread Pete Goodall
Why is this marked as 'Incomplete'? There seems to be abundant
information on this bug and a large number of users affected. I can
reliably reproduce this bug trying to play Big Buck Bunny on a fresh and
up-to-date install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Mini 1012. Haven't tried
the ppa yet, but wanted to at least ask why this is marked as
Incomplete. Didn't see any explanation in the comments.
