[Bug 2067854] Re: Hard freezes requiring power cycling - Ubuntu 24.04 fresh install

2024-06-05 Thread Peter
There is issue with NVIDIA in ubuntu and in debian, i figured exactly
the issue - it freezes when adaptive mode is set on graphics card, after
some time once graphics want to rest - screen freezes. Keeping card at
full power keeps system stable. Clearly some power management bug.

[Bug 2067202] [NEW] Qt6 packages seem to be missing pkg-config files

2024-05-26 Thread Peter Rockett
Public bug reported:

The qt6-base-dev package is missing the pkg-config .pc files (that do
exist in the corresponding Debian packages and also existed in the Qt5
version of this package). The result is that building gnuplot 6 breaks,
for example.

(Thought I had filed this already bu can find no mention.)

[Bug 2064563] Re: Broken default installation of nix-bin and nix-setup-systemd

2024-05-24 Thread Peter Valdemar Mørch
In addition, nix environment variables don't get set up when one logs in
via ssh.

 I As the OP points out:

> nix-setup-systemd also ends up setting up the NIX_PATH to per-user dir above
> making the assumption that it was completed in this file:
>   - `/usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf`

It also sets up NIX_REMOTE and modifies PATH.

The problem is that /usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf is sourced by
systemd-environment-d-generator(8) that parses them and updates the
environment exported by the systemd user instance (see
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/latest/environment.d.html).
Which means the environment variables are set for processes started by
the systemd user instance (only).

And not when you login via ssh.

Because of this, nix works (except for the problems presented previously
in this bug) only for the desktop session, and not when logged in via
ssh.

[Bug 2060268] Re: Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver

2024-05-24 Thread Peter Würtz
Isn't this also a Gnome settings bug? Even with the presence of an
erroneously detected extra monitor, shouldn't we be able to simply
deactivate it / configure the desktop to not span across both monitors?

The Settings > Displays GUI doesn't seem to work correctly. The
"Unknown" monitor is reported as being inactive, although we can see the
effects of e.g. the mouse pointer getting lost on the right.
Activating/deactivating the "Unknown" monitor also doesn't work.

2024-05-22 Thread Peter Sabaini
Fabio, can I ask you to provide some detail on the setup.

- Can you confirm which NFS client you are using?
- Would you be able to share logs. Ideally provide an sosreport, but if that is
not feasible /v/l/kern.log and /v/l/syslog would be great

Thank you.

After several hundred package updates over time this problem is no
longer occurring, I suspect that it was something buggy in the XML
library used by FotnConfig.

[Bug 2063547] [NEW] Deprecated locale.format() in indicator.py

2024-04-25 Thread Peter Kokot
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu: 24.04

The locale.format() function has been deprecated in Python 3.7 and
removed in 3.12. Instead locale.format_string() can be used in the

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-04-24 Thread Peter Ryan
Thanks - this fix appears to have resolved my lag issues.

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.04 LTS
$XDG_SESSION_TYPE: x11
nVidia: 535.171.04

Mobo/CPU: MSI MAG B550M BAZOOKA / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Video card: MSI GeForce GT1030 2GB PCI Express

Mostly this was affecting Gnome terminal for me, but just prior to
applying this patch (thanks again!!) I used GnuCash and that lagged too.

[Bug 2058415] Re: Reading binary data in paraview broken by libexpat1 update

2024-04-23 Thread Peter Heywood
VTK has been patched upstream to correctly handle AppendedData elements
in .vtu files with the updated/patched libexpat1:

https://gitlab.kitware.com/vtk/vtk/-/commit/db8f9efca220c9d16a30958e179abae3379d0011

https://gitlab.kitware.com/vtk/vtk/-/issues/19258

This will need backporting to older VTK releases on ubuntu's where
libexpat1's fixes have been backported, which if I'm reading the ubuntu
package release dates correctly is Jammy(security, updates), Mantic
(security, updates) and potentially Noble (release).

Many thanks for the successful investigation!
Running the ppa test kernel I can't reproduce the problem anymore. :-)

I use two cifs servers running Debian 11, with a couple of shares. With both
standard kernels (6.5.0-27, 6.5.0-28) copying inside a share fails immediately
on any server.
My fstab mounts look like this:

[Bug 2062063] [NEW] ULTS 24 linux 6.8.0-22 SOF sound chips wrong name of fw package

2024-04-17 Thread Peter Grandi

Binary package 'linux-modules-extra'.

With a Skylake Intel sound chip I get:

[5.911304] sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl :00:1f.3: Check if you have

The actual Ubuntu package to install is called "firmware-sof-signed" rather

[Bug 2061684] Re: ULTS 24 linux 6.8.0-22 modules misversioned

2024-04-17 Thread Peter Grandi
So there are news after yet another reboot after several hundred package
updates, but not of the kernel (AFAIK).

Both 'modprobe rtw88_8821ce' (the "official" modules) and 'modprobe
rtw_8821ce' (from 'rtw88_lwfinger') succeed.

I think that the 'kmod' package is the same as before
('kmod_31+20240202-2ubuntu5') so I wonder what else has changed.

[Bug 2061667] Re: Noble 'autofs' 5.1.9-1ubuntu3 buffer overflow

2024-04-17 Thread Peter Grandi
«In the meantime, you can also try debuginfod»

Interesting, thanks for mentioning this.

«reproduce it finally after I added "strictexpire" to /etc/auto.master»

That is really weird, I think I was not using that (or "ignore").
Your intuition that was a factor seems to have worked because:

«PPA has a patched version for noble»

Works here both on kernel 5.15.0-102 (which I had to use for a while
because of other issues) and 6.8.0-22 (which I have gone back to).
Thanks for looking at this.

I will add the config files later. In the meantime this might be useful,

[Bug 2061995] [NEW] ULLTS 22, 24: FontConfig broken by including ".conf" file

2024-04-17 Thread Peter Grandi
Public bug reported:

This happens to me on both ULTS 22 and ULKTS 24 on FotnConfig in
somewhat different ways:

* In ULTS 24 if there is a file '/etc/fonts/local.conf' then all fonts
are rendered as if the font were not hinted or 'hinting' were 'false'.
This is not noticeable if antialiasing is on, and most users default to
antialiasing.

* In ULTS 22 if there is a file '$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf'
then some fonts are no longer found, or get rendered with rectangular
shapes. I guess not many users customize their font settings.

A telling example from ULTS 22:

$  cat /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-antialias.conf

false

$  cp -p /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-antialias.conf
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf
$ fc-list 'dejavu sans mono' family
$  rm $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf
$ fc-list 'dejavu sans mono' family
DejaVu Sans Mono

This happens also with a skeleton
'$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf' (or '/etc/fonts/local.conf')
too:

$  cat > $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf

$ fc-list 'dejavu sans mono' family
$  rm $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf
$ fc-list 'dejavu sans mono' family
DejaVu Sans Mono

None of these anomalies happen under ULST 20.

My impression: symptoms vary and are weird, so probably it is something
like a buffer overflow when reading the ".conf" files or the use of not-
initialized memory.

[Bug 2061685] [NEW] ULTS weird behaviour 'screen' 'tmux' (likely kernel error)

2024-04-15 Thread Peter Grandi
Public bug reported:

It is hard to provide evidence but the story is:

* I start 'tmux' or 'screen'.

* Everything works nicely until later, after I switch tabs/windows
within them.

* Then all my inputs behave as if I kept pressing the 'Ctrl' key, so
when I type "v" what is actually receive is Ctrl-v.

* If I reboot into kernel 5.15.0-102 with the same "root", that is the
same 'tmux' and 'screen' binaries, this does not happen.

* Apparently it does not happen inside an X terminal like 'xterm' or
'sakura', so I guess it is some weird bug in the console tty
"discipline" (to use an old UNIX term).

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I can mount cifs shares with kernel 6.5.0-27, but when copying files from the
share to the same share the process is killed everytime. Same effect using bash
"cp" or KDE kio copy via Krusader.
Running with kernel 6.5.0-26 anything works perfect.

[Bug 2061202] Re: rust-glib-sys fail to pass autopkgtests

2024-04-13 Thread peter green
I had a look at this and I discovered multiple issues.

The first is that the package fails to build because gir-rust-code
generator needs a time64 fix that ubuntu doesn't currently have. Said
fix is available in Debian experimental, you should just be able to sync
it.

The second is tests failing due to a missing header include, I fixed
that with the following patch.

Index: rust-glib-sys-0.19.0/tests/manual.h
===
--- rust-glib-sys-0.19.0.orig/tests/manual.h
+++ rust-glib-sys-0.19.0/tests/manual.h
@@ -2,6 +2,7 @@
.
 #include
 #include
+#include
.
 // included in Gir on all platforms even though it is only present on windows
 #ifndef G_WIN32_MSG_HANDLE

The third is a cross-validation failure.

 cross_validate_layout_with_c stdout
Layout mismatch for GStaticMutex
Rust: Layout { size: 8, alignment: 8 }
C:Layout { size: 48, alignment: 8 }
Layout mismatch for GStaticRWLock
Rust: Layout { size: 40, alignment: 8 }
C:Layout { size: 80, alignment: 8 }
Layout mismatch for GStaticRecMutex
Rust: Layout { size: 16, alignment: 8 }
C:Layout { size: 64, alignment: 8 }

It seems that these types have a discrepancy between their defintion in
C and in gir. Furthermore it seems that gir-rust-code-generator only
generates bindings for these types with the glib2.0 from
noble/experimental, not with the glib2.0 from sid.

I'm not sure where to go from here, the test code in question is
generated by gir-rust-code-generator, which is run during the build, so
editing it manually would be awkward. I tried to exclude the symbols in
question from rust code generation but that caused the rust code
generation to fail.

[Bug 2058415] Re: Reading binary data in paraview broken by libexpat1 update

On Jammy, the update from 2.4.7-1ubuntu0.2 to 2.4.7-1ubuntu0.3 causes
simialr XML not well formed (invalid token) errors for files which
contain binary data. Downgrading to 2.4.7-1 resolved the issue.

[Bug 2058409] Re: Install of tevlive-full hangs: tex/context/base/mkiv/l-sandbox.lua:180: module 'socket.core' not found

2024-03-26 Thread Peter Benie
The postinstall runs fails because luatex now has the 'socket'
functionality disabled by default. [CVE-2023-32668]

The upstream source for mtxrun has --socket added to the luatex command
line to reenable the functionality while running 'mtxrun --make'. See
lines having '--socket' in https://source.contextgarden.net/mtxrun.lua

I think that there are two bugs here:
1) The mismatch between luatex and context regarding --socket, and
2) The post-install hangs indefinitely rather than returning an error.

Same here, but please have in mind that the above solution only works
for the default entry in grub, if you want to be sure use
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=i8042.nomux (=1 is obsolete according to docs) so it
also works for the older kernel.

But thanks for the solution whover came up with it the first time!

2024-02-25 Thread Peter Walsh
Public bug reported:

When using pipewire and realtime kernel if pipewire crashes it appears
to not reload with the group and then requires a restart of the computer
to reload group.

Also with 24.04 installation the user isn't added to pipewire group.

Shouldn't an update be released that adds the workaround(s) mentioned
above (the Kernel boot parameters i915.enable_dc=0 or/and, if necessary,
intel_idle.max_cstate=$MAX_CSTATE_THAT_WORKS)?

So the Ubuntu 22.04 experience is improved for users with Intel graphics
while the kernel regression is tracked down and patched?

2022-05-27 Thread Kevin Peter Gade
Yes - Disabling Secureboot worked in order to get acpidbg working
(killed my touchpad mouse however that is another topic).

Output from both commands here:

[Bug 1956177] Re: battery not detected by ACPI

2022-05-24 Thread Kevin Peter Gade
Hello.
I have tried to follow above instructions carefully, recompiling my own file.
However for me its not working, unfortunately battery is still not recognized.

I followed these steps:

1) install acpica-tools
sudo apt-get install acpica-tools

2) Grab the DSDT of your device
sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat

3) Decompile the dsdt.dat
sudo iasl -d dsdt.dat

4) Open the dsdt.dsl with whatever editor tickles your fancy
sudo xed dsdt.dsl

5) Delete everything with a * in front, first line should be "DefinitionBlock"
(For me that include Firmware Error (ACPI) in line 1 and 2 - if that could
matter:
Could not resolve [^GFX0.CLID], AE_NOT_FOUND (20190509/dswload-388)
Could not resolve [^GFX0.CLID], AE_NOT_FOUND (20190509/dswload2-369)

6) Raise the last number in Definition Block by one
e.g.:
DefinitionBlock ("", "DSDT", 2, "FUJ ", "FJNBB6D ", 0x010C)
   ↓
DefinitionBlock ("", "DSDT", 2, "FUJ ", "FJNBB6D ", 0x010C0001)

7) Search for the string "OperationRegion (ERAM"
for me it was at line 18751; your mileage may vary

8) Replace the entire line with this one:
OperationRegion (ERAM, EmbeddedControl, Zero, 0x0100)

(I had OperationRegion (ERAM, SystemMemory, 0xFE508300, 0x0100) to begin
with)

9) Save and Exit

10) Recompile the dsdt.dsl (Note: This WILL show loads of warnings and
optimizations
This will give you a dsdt.aml that should work.

I did that with: sudo iasl -ta dsdt.dsl and got the aml file just with
warnings.

11) Proceed as above

sudo cp dsdt.aml /boot/
sudo cp 01_acpi /etc/grub.d/
chmod 755 01_acpi
sudo update-grub
reboot

Still just the same :/
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

PS. BIOS v. 1.12 (freshly update through Windows, Fujitsu DeskUpdate).

Br. Kevin

[Bug 1973402] [NEW] screen keyboard and auto-rotation does not work on Lenovo YOGA 510-14ISK

2022-05-14 Thread Peter Nentwich
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

The screen-keyboard on Lenovo YOGA 510-14ISK (which is a convertible) does not
open automatically nor when accessed via settings/accessibility.
Only when trying to report the bug, the screen-keyboard opened after typing
 - but it did not respond to tapping.

(in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS it worked fine on this machine)

I don't know if the second error is related to this: auto-rotation on Lenovo
YOGA 510-14ISK doesn't work either after upgrading to 22.04 and the
"rotation"-icon is not displayed in the top right menu either.

[Bug 1971752] [NEW] Toggling F11 for fullscreen reduces the restored window size

2022-05-05 Thread Peter Ryan
Public bug reported:

When I open a Gnome Terminal window at a given size (say 80 columns x 24
rows), press F11 to go full-screen, and then press F11 to restore the
window to it's original size, it will be a bit smaller! It will lose
both height and width.

If I keep toggling with F11, the window will reduce to 3 lines and...
I'm not sure exactly how many columns, but it's less than it had.

[Bug 1970987] [NEW] Laminar web UI mostly missing, wrong chartjs version

2022-04-29 Thread Peter Hartley
Public bug reported:

I installed the laminard package (laminard_1.1-1build1) on Ubuntu
22.04LTS on a Raspberry Pi 3 (64-bit ARM). But most of Laminar's Web UI
is missing when you go to http://localhost:8080 (you just get a grey bar
across the top of the screen).

Using browsers' "developer tools" mode, the Web UI's Javascript is
erroring trying to use 'Chart.scaleService', which is a Chart.js 2.x API
that was removed in Chart.js 3.0.

The Chart.js version in question is compiled into the laminard package
at package-build time. Looking into the Ubuntu/Debian changes to this
package (laminar_1.1-1build1.debian.tar.xz) there is a patch that
changes upstream's fetching of Chart.js 2.x specifically, to a reference
to a local-to-the-build-host copy of Chart.js with no version checking.
If the build host had a 3.x copy of Chart.js in that location, then that
would explain the failure: the package would build without any visible
failure, but the Javascript would fail at runtime with the symptoms
described.

[Bug 1970731] Re: iptables empty when using firewalld

2022-04-29 Thread Peter Englmaier
Hi Jamie

Thanks for your answer. I understand that nft sees all, but iptables
only part of the rules.

Best, Peter

[Bug 1970880] [NEW] Kernel "Oops" after page fault while trying to configure wifi in iwlwifi

Recently (last week) I was running 5.13.0-39-generic without problems.
After an update from Canonical the system became unstable, freezing
during boot, or freezing while running a normal app - basically
unusable. Looking at the GRUB menus I notice that the default version of
Ubuntu I was now running was 5.13.0-40-generic. Looking through the logs
I found in kern.log the following kernel Oops (see below at Apr 25

This does not happen with the -39 kernel. It also does not happen if I
disable my Bluetooth/wifi hardware on the motherboard in the BIOS. I am
now running the -40 kernel with Bluetooth/wifi disabled.

[Bug 1967121] Re: Contextual menus are glitching when auto-hide is enabled (right click + windows selector)

2022-04-28 Thread Peter Kristiawan
I got the same bug here. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
Every time I right click on the application icon on the dock and suddenly the
contextual menu shifts to follow the dock when the auto-hide function is
activated.
This is very annoying, especially when we want to click to select the "Quit"
menu, and the result is the "Remove from Favorites" menu instead.

[Bug 1970731] [NEW] iptables empty when using firewalld

2022-04-28 Thread Peter Englmaier
Public bug reported:

Summary:
I am using firewalld/jammy,now 1.1.1-1ubuntu1 on my vpn server. The vpn server
is using wireguard and I could successfully configure zones and policies in
firewalld. Yet, iptables does not show the rules from firewalld.

1) System
root@vpn:~# uname -a
Linux vpn 5.15.0-27-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 14 04:55:28 UTC 2022 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
root@vpn:~# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Release:22.04

All updates installed.

2) What happens:

I am setting rules with firewall-cmd.

These firewall rules are visible with:
   nft list table inet firewalld
but not with 'iptables'.

3) What I expect to happen:

The toutput of
  iptables --list
should also reflect firewalld settings.

4) What happened instead

However, the iptables output shows only empty tables (filter, mangle,
nat).

root@vpn:~# iptables -t nat --list
# Warning: iptables-legacy tables present, use iptables-legacy to see them
Chain PREROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source   destination

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source   destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source   destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source   destination

5) Further information

The ufw firewall is disabled and uninstalled.

According to the release notes of 22.04, the backend has changed to nftables.
I was assuming, that the backend default is kind of transparent to the user,
meaning iptables should still work as normal.

I wonder if on my system is iptables correctly linked to the backend.

Iptables points to xtables-nft-multi:
root@vpn:~# ls -l /usr/sbin/iptables
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Aug 24  2021 /usr/sbin/iptables ->
/etc/alternatives/iptables
root@vpn:~# ls -l /etc/alternatives/iptables
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Apr 25 18:56 /etc/alternatives/iptables ->
/usr/sbin/iptables-nft
root@vpn:~# ls -l /usr/sbin/iptables-nft
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Mar 24 12:58 /usr/sbin/iptables-nft ->
xtables-nft-multi
root@vpn:~# ls -l /usr/sbin/xtables-nft-multi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 224296 Mar 24 12:58 /usr/sbin/xtables-nft-multi

Perhaps this is an issue with the upgrade process of ubuntu.

[Bug 1968845] Re: Upgrade to 22.04 from 20.04 ends with dbus installation asking for a reboot

2022-04-27 Thread Peter De Sousa
Can confirm #10 works for me too. Can be confusing, but luckily I
checked for this bug first. The upgrade will block on the message
"Please reboot your system..." but after waiting some time it unblocked
on its own.
