[Bug 1577197] Re: Pulseaudio bluez5-util.c: TryAcquire() failed - Operation Not Authorized

2016-12-22 Thread Sabin Iacob
so, in order to get sound I have to:

* start blueman applet (default applet connects to ... something on the
headphones, because they say "device connected", but not to some audio thingy,
or at least pulseaudio doesn't pick it up unless I use blueman and tell it to
connect to the audio sink on the headphones)
* start headphones
* sometimes open sound settings and click on the headphones so the sink shows
up - it's listed in sound settings, but doesn't show up in pacmd list-sinks
* run a2dp.py

awesome!

Does anyone have a way to automate this, or at least remotely stab a
pulseaudio developer?

[Bug 1577197] Re: Pulseaudio bluez5-util.c: TryAcquire() failed - Operation Not Authorized

2016-12-20 Thread Sabin Iacob
in my case I have to do rmmod btusb; modprobe btusb

it looks to me like every new release of Ubuntu manages to break Bluetooth
audio in some way that is new and creative and ever-increasingly difficult to
automate away:
 * 14.10 and before - volume wouldn't be restored, sink wouldn't switch; solved
by having a script listen to dbus for a headphone connection event and tell
pulseaudio to set the default sink and restore volume
 * 15.04 - no sound unless I disconnected and reconnected again; put that in a
script
 * 15.10 - needed to connect manually, but at least the rest worked; solved by
having a script look if the phones are connected, do a l2ping to see if they
are available and connect; occasionally I'd have to rmmod btusb; modprobe btusb
 * 16.04 - this issue; I only managed to upgrade yesterday, I still haven't
found a pattern to this madness

[Bug 1498459] Re: "Notifications on welcome screen" setting not implemented

2016-04-20 Thread Sabin Iacob
Isn't this in locking and unlocking -> notifications and quick settings?

somewhat related, notifications still flash on the screen when they are
created, regardless of that setting - so someone looking to log in to
some service while I'm away can see the code sent by SMS for ~2s even if
the screen is locked

[Bug 1402401] Re: Xorg freeze when switching to text console and back

2015-03-01 Thread Sabin Iacob
More info: when freezes happen, I can move the mouse, but no window
responds; also, switching to a text console works once (it takes about
15-20s to do it).

I was able to run dmesg this time, and it ends with the attached
backtrace; Xorg.0.log says nothing, X thinks everything's fine; it even
logs I'm switching to a text console:

[183594.768] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

Attempting to get back to X (Alt-F7) or to restart lightdm results in an
unusable computer (this time ctrl-alt-Fx no longer works, I have to alt-
sysrq-{s,u,b});

Xorg.0.log.old (the log after restart lightdm leaves me with an
unusable machine) ends with this:

[183854.910] (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0
[183854.912] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0,
position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none

[Bug 1270676] Re: SD Card Reader broken on UX302LG

2014-12-14 Thread Sabin Iacob
Many thanks, Oleksij!

Since there seems to be no answer to your email from kernel people, I
took the liberty of extracting the source from that diff and packaging
it using DKMS.

https://launchpad.net/~iacobs/+archive/ubuntu/au6601 (the package is
called au6601-dkms)

I only uploaded a package for utopic / 14.10 because that's what I have
and could test (also, 14.04 had no video on my UX302L (known bug), so I
doubt there are many folks on 14.04 - it's kinda hard to install without
a display), I'll add packages for other releases if anyone requests
them.

[Bug 1402401] [NEW] Xorg freeze when switching to text console and back

2014-12-14 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

Sometimes the computer becomes unresponsive after switching to a text
console and back; this seems to be an Xorg and / or kernel driver crash
(there is a backtrace in dmesg that seems to be from Intel drivers).

The rest of the system worked fine, I could SSH into it and restart
Xorg. I had an (html5) Youtube video playing in Firefox when the lockup
happened, I'll try to see if that was the culprit (I switched a few
times to text console and back after restarting X and all was fine, but
I didn't have a video running)

[Bug 1175731] [NEW] maximum volume when device connects, can't adjust unless I open sound settings

2013-05-02 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

Pretty much what the subject says

Expected behaviour when an audio device connects:

* sound switches to the device
* volume is restored to the value it had before disconnecting (or 100% if there
is no stored value)
* volume control indicator controls the volume for the Bluetooth device

What actually happens:

* sound switches to the device
* the volume is at 100%; however, in sound settings the previous value is
preserved, it's just not applied
* the volume control indicator controls the builtin audio, not the Bluetooth
device
* after manually selecting the BT device in sound settings, the volume control
indicator is able to control it; the previous volume is still not restored
until volume control is actually used

this patch should fix it (for now); I also took the liberty to use

eval(string_fetched_from_the_internet) is a... startling decision.

also, it seems Google is returning 403, so that route is not working at
all:

Re: [Bug 986675] Re: [n10] GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported, compiz worked perfectly before upgrade (from 11.04)

2012-04-26 Thread Sabin Iacob
So it may have been an update-alternatives failure (they keep changing
the name, before it was gl_conf, now it's a RSI-inducing
x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf), and switching to / from the nvidia stack
fixed the links.

What's weird is that it's been failing partially somehow (I _had_ OpenGL
support, just without one of the features needed for unity), and nothing
else was complaining / exploding (which should happen in case a .so file
isn't where it's supposed to be, right?). It looks like something the
post-install script can double-check.

[Bug 986928] [NEW] zeitgeist-daemon crashes with zeitgeist-daemon.vala:473: Unable to upgrade from schema version 3

2012-04-22 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

The end result is that none of the search options in dash work

The issue is solvable by removing $HOME/.local/share/zeitgeist, but it's
pretty hard to diagnose for the casual user; to find this out I had to:

* kill unity-applications-daemon
* start it in a terminal, see it complains about zeitgeist-daemon
* start zeitgeist-daemon, see the error message in the subject, fumble around
on the internets for half an hour, attempt to purge/reinstall zeitgeist
* finally start zeitgeist-daemon --log-level=DEBUG, see this:

[16:45:33.549992 DEBUG] utils.vala:59: DATA_PATH = $HOME/.local/share/zeitgeist
[16:45:33.550419 DEBUG] utils.vala:78: DATABASE_FILE_PATH =

[16:45:33.555311 WARNING] zeitgeist-daemon.vala:473: Unable to upgrade from
schema version 3

... and guess it doesn't like the database, remove the whole thing just
to be sure

At least an informative message would be in order, if removing some
obscure data automatically is not an option.

 Hey iacobs,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

I did some testing, there is a band aid in oneiric but it's not fixed:
display-properties won't let me set up the monitors the way I need them,
instead forcing me to put them on top of each other (highly awkward to
use if they are _next to each other_ on my desk)

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
 close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

I'm not sure what to do; there is a solution, but I feel it's inadequate
as it doesn't address the underlying problem, which is compiz using a
single texture for the whole desktop (tiling the desktop to fit the
video texture size or using a separated texture on each monitor are the
two most obvious solutions to someone like me, who doesn't know anything
about graphics programming)

window's opacity when using compositing, couldn't find one these days;

[Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays corrupted with thick slanted lines

2011-10-04 Thread Sabin Iacob
may I say that crippling options so that we can't use external monitors
at their native resolution is not a solution? the solution to this
problem is breaking the desktop into tiles smaller than max texture
size, doing compositing/transforms and then combining them afterwards
for display (or something more clever someone who is an actual graphics
programmer can come up with, this seems the most straightforward
approach to me)

rant
and no, saying screw you, get a real computer is not a solution either; my
Atom 570 netbook has plenty of power (dual core + HT = 4 virtual cores) in a
small, cheap and light package, I'm not giving it up for a 4 kg 17 inch monster
with the nvidia mobile card du jour (it also has a nvidia ION2 which eats about
as much power as the rest of the system); it's sad that Intel chose to cripple
both the video card (2048x2048 max texture size) and the CPU (can't address
more than 2 GB of RAM -- maybe they have a thing for 2^11), but the former can
be overcome by smart programmers and the latter by SSD (seek times approaching
zero make swapping significantly less painful)
/rant

OK, got it on a netbook and 2048+ wide extended desktop. The terminal
window is drawn without opacity (it's rectangular, the not-rounded-

What's more, on unity-3d, when I get a screen that wide, the desktop
 basically breaks and plays dead.

This is on a Atom netbook, Intel N10, so it seems consistent that this
issue comes with lower end intel chips.

@Colin can you confirm that U3D still works as expected? @Sabin, you
 too, please?

To me it looks more and more as a hardware / driver issue.

Unity 3D (Compiz, actually) is unusable on dual monitors if the desktop
exceeds the maximum texture size (which, for Intel cards and a few
others, is 2048x2048); Unity 2D is ok if I don't use compositing (apart
from some artefacts that are drawn on the primary monitor when the
secondary/external one displays a menu), gnome terminal is drawn on top
of everything otherwise.

While it may be a hardware limitation (Intel seems to have made a habit
out of this, Atom chips can't use more than 2G of RAM, for instance), is
it really that hard to paint separate monitors in separate textures?
(disclaimer: I don't know what I'm talking about, I know nil about the
way compositing is done).

[Bug 735205] Re: [window management] Alt tab does not switch to the desired application but instead set the urgency flag on the window

2011-08-19 Thread Sabin Iacob
I was thinking it is focus stealing prevention gone astray as well

in my case (Natty, unity-2d PPA) I trigger this behaviour when:
* I click a link in chromium and immediately press alt+tab to bring up the
terminal in order to see something logged
* I am writing an email (thunderbird) and press alt+tab to see something in
another window
* I am editing some text somewhere - pidgin, libreoffice, chromium or firefox
url bar - and I press alt+tab

some means of configuring / disabling focus stealing prevention would be
great IMO

[Bug 776978] [NEW] everything on screen is garbled apart from the top bar (2 monitors, different resolutions, unity, natty)

2011-05-04 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

I'm not the original author of the question, but I've got the exact same
problem (Acer Aspire One, 1280x720 + 1440x900 external); this is the main thing
that keeps me on Lucid (it's the gf's laptop I am experimenting with)

Hello,

I'm working with a portable computer, with another screen attached to
the vga port. I work with both screens.

I updated Ubuntu desktop from 10.10 to 11.04. After the update, both
screens were corrupted, excepted the upper bar. When I've disconnected
the external monitor and rebooted, everything worked file. Each time I
tried to reconnect the external monitor, both screens were unreadable,
excepted (sometimes) the upper bar and the new launchbar at the left of
the screen.

If i shake the mouse on the screen, some fields are redrawn and become
visible.

I've then installed 11.04 from scratch (reformat and reinstall). The
problem is the same.

The screen on the portable computer is 1400x1050, and the external
screen is 1680(?) x 1050

[Just for completeness, my home directory is on another partition. So
if something about displays were written to that directory by ubuntu
10.10 (and is now incompatible with 11.04), I don't know were it is, and
don't know how to remove it.

2010-12-15 Thread Sabin Iacob
@Yuri: (lucid proposed) PPA package is older than g-s-d again

@whoever maintains the Ubuntu package: frankly I find this ridiculous,
this bug has been here for more than a year, there is a fix which works
fine (I have been using it since February, so did others) and we have
seen 2 releases already (ok, first time there was a feature freeze, but
the second time? with a working patch that probably needed minimal
changes?)

[Bug 582272] Re: resume from suspend-to-ram results in heavy swap thrashing

2010-05-30 Thread Sabin Iacob
after 2 days, regular (heavy) usage and several suspend/resume cycles, I
think I can safely say that the issue doesn't happen with the upstream
kernel; also, there seems to be way less swap usage than before (it
barely went over 600 MB, while in the same period the old kernel manages
to fill 1.5G - that, with 2G of RAM)

going back to the stock kernel, as the nightly one seems to trigger a
bug in udevd which causes it to max out the CPU (at least people on LKML
seem to think it's an udevd bug)

2010-05-27 Thread Sabin Iacob
Linux shire 2.6.34-999-generic #201005261208 SMP Wed May 26 12:12:50 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

The changes I see after a few hours of light usage (web browsing) are:
udevd using about 50% CPU all the time (maxes out one of the two virtual
ones resulted from hyperthreading), swap not being used so far (I found
it strange that swap was being used in the first place, I have 2GB of RAM).

I disabled the script that messes with vm.swappiness, I'll report back
after a few suspend/resume cycles and heavier usage (photo processing,
development).

[Bug 582272] [NEW] resume from suspend-to-ram results in heavy swap thrashing

2010-05-18 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

With default settings (vm.swappiness=60), wakeup after a few hours of
suspending results in heavy swap thrashing (looks like all memory is being
copied to swap and then read back); this is even more problematic for me, since
1. I am on a 2 year old (MLC) SSD, which will eventually take a hit from this
2. it's a JMicron one, which means I see something like 70-80% IOWait, and
everything moves like crap

Setting vm.swappiness to 0 fixes this, but causes me other problems
(with preemptive swapping disabled, IOWait lockups happen if I fill all
the available RAM, and that usually happens when I'm working).

My theory is that some timer goes bananas, and after resuming the
lernel thinks all applications haven't been used for x hours, hence they
should be committed to swap in order to free memory, and then all of
them are being used again, so they need to be brought back...

so far, my fix involves setting vm.swappiness to 0 before suspend, and
back to 60 after resume, I attached the script that does it (place in
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d)

there are enough configuration paths besides Gnome: udev policy,
xorg.conf, even a sesion startup script to run synclient TapButton2=2
TapButton3=3... problem is, gnome-settings-daemon walks all over that
and loads its hardcoded configuration, and then resets whatever you
configured manually using synclient every time an input device is
added/removed.

The most logical step would be to make gnome leave the predefined
configuration alone; if one knows how to change that, it's most likely
someone who knows what they're doing (or has received copy'n paste
advice from someone who knpws what they're doing).

probably the fact that it only affects people with multitouch-capable

[Bug 472490] [NEW] ubuntuone-client crashes after connecting network cable

2009-11-03 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

* put laptop to sleep at home (wireless network present)

network)
* wake it up at work, connect network cable

from the error's content, it appears to be DBus related

nevermind, looked again, seems to be the BadTransition bug (the error
message is quite confusing, why not give me the exception in the first
place?)

[Bug 387189] Re: /dev/null corrupted (/dev/null.1)

2009-08-17 Thread Sabin Iacob
same here on a laptop that I rarely reboot (I just suspend to ram);
after a while, /dev/null is replaced with a blank file, and /dev/null.1
appears; if /dev/null.1 exists, /dev/null.2 is created and so on

[Bug 207135] Re: pulseaudio uses too much CPU

2009-05-15 Thread Sabin Iacob
EEEpc 1000, Intel Atom 1.6GHz, Ubuntu Jaunty

r...@shire:~# apt-cache policy pulseaudio
pulseaudio:
  Installed: 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.1
  Candidate: 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.1 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20 0
500 http://ro.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

pulseaudio uses about 70% with src-linear, had to disable CPU limits
because pulse kept dying (and, as a result, any app playing sound at
that moment jumping to 200% CPU usage)

started happening a few days ago, I think

[Bug 258059] Re: Upgrade to Intrepid broke X (I830WaitLpRing timeout)

2008-11-17 Thread Sabin Iacob
in my case, X works fine for a while and then crashes when I start
Mozilla Thunderbird; subsequent attempts by gdm to restart X fail and
the screen is unreadable (looks like it sets a wrong refresh rate or
smth... all static and lines - also on text console, when switching to a
text console I catch a glimpse of the dialog box that tells me X keeps
crashing (I think))

Sometimes a restart solves the issue and Thunderbird starts fine afterwards,
sometimes it takes 3-4 restarts.
