ubuntu-restricted-extras-java is not from the official ubuntu

whoever distributes this, telling them not to overwrite the official
copyright file of ubuntu-restricted-extras.

[Bug 359934] Re: Java is not included in ubuntu-restricted-extras

2009-10-15 Thread Sarah Hobbs
If people are downloading debs via direct download, and double clicking,
they're doing it wrong. We deliberately have a very clear add/remove
programs section, which is the simplified version of synaptic, and what
people should be using. It is built for beginners, and is easier to use
than search+find+download+double click - not to mention, gives
descriptions for software before downloading them.

If we have documentation about needing to direct download and double
click to get software packages which are easily available in the
standard repositories, this needs to be changed. Please point these
links out if you have seen them.

[Bug 367287] Re: kubuntu-restricted-extras should depend on lame

2009-04-26 Thread Sarah Hobbs
No problem.

The source package is different to the binary package. Some packages
build many binaries. For something like clamav, a virus scanner, the
following binaries are produced: clamav-base, clamav-docs, clamav-dbg,
clamav, libclamav-dev, libclamav6, clamav-daemon, clamav-testfiles,
clamav-freshclam, clamav-milter.

What you're searching for and installing is the binary, not the source.
However, in launchpad, we go by sources. If you ran 'apt-get source
kubuntu-restricted-extras', you'd find it wouldn't exist.

[Bug 295713] Re: pidgin ends (instead of minimizing) when closing buddy list

2009-04-07 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Confirmed. This is extremely annoying as the icon in the tray is now
gone by default. This really needs to minimise to the notification
panel (particularly as pidgin has a bad habit of appearing on all
desktops, which i'm sure is a separate bug).

Confirmed with a new pidgin config, and a dist-upgraded config.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG

2009-03-26 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Vadim, you'll want someone like Mark commenting on this, or a member of
the DX team. Any other developer won't cut it (as we're effectively
users in this instance, and many of us don't like these changes either).

Also, i'm not sure this *particular* bit was mentioned at UDS - I
remember seeing the mockup of what they planned for notification, with
the black boxes, but I don't recall hearing them talk about, let alone,
show mockups of, cleaning up the notification area. This is likely why
no one blogged about it (at least that i saw) - perhaps they all missed
it too, or it just wasn't there.

Either way, I'm sad to say that this hasn't been handled well by
Canonical, and, unless the DX team decide to go and break even more
freezes (such as the UI freeze), we'll be stuck with it like this for
Jaunty. One can only hope that there is a better result in Karmic, and
that not too many users are lost to other distributions, due to the
regressions they see in Ubuntu.

[Bug 340315] Re: [Dell Inc. MM061] hibernate/resume failure (i386)

2009-03-13 Thread Sarah Hobbs
I tested all the way down until 2.6.28-8.23-generic, and all of them
don't hibernate correctly. According to my installer logs, 8.26 got
installed, and hibernate was working.

However, the install was done on ext4, with an ext3 /home, which was
converted to an ext4 home later (by copying the files off it, using
gparted on a livecd to format /home to ext4, changing /etc/fstab then
copying the files back again).

I'm already using the 2.6.28-9 kernel normally, and it has this problem
as well.

[Bug 340315] Re: [Dell Inc. MM061] hibernate/resume failure (i386)

2009-03-11 Thread Sarah Hobbs
It broke while going to hibernation as far as I know. It seems to do a
normal boot when one hits the power button to turn it on again.

This happens repeatedly.

Hibernate worked up until the end of February or so - I don't have an
exact date when it broke, as I don't hibernate overly much.
2.6.28-8-generic was the kernel I was using, where it both worked, and
subsequently failed a few days later.

The battery didn't run out, it didn't kernel panic, and I didn't see any
messages either.

I'll test via pm-hibernate in a bit.

Thanks for the response!

2009-03-11 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Using pm-hibernate from VT1 showed the same problem. The only
indications that the hibernate hasn't worked is that it takes a long
time for the machine to power down, goes to gdm when you restart it, and
brings up a crash report after login.

How can I get logs of this? Which ones would you like?

[Bug 336208] [NEW] Screen Profiles does not source the user .screenrc correctly

2009-03-01 Thread Sarah Hobbs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: screen-profiles

Greetings!

At the bottom of ~/.screen-profiles/profile (A symlink to /usr/share
/screen-profiles/profiles/ubuntu-black), there is the line:

source ~/.screenrc

However, the ~ either a) never gets evaluated, or b) gets evaluated
incorrectly, thus the file never gets sourced (and my vim goes in bright
colours as a result!). When changing this to /home/sarah, it works
without a problem.

Thanks!

Lets remove this - the rationale looks sane. If it gets more love in
the future, it can go back into the archives.

[Bug 322355] Re: incomplete ubuntu-restricted-extras installation with preseed

Hey there,

I believe you would be seeing
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pkgsel/+bug/315363 which
has since been fixed for jaunty cds, but not earlier releases.

Ubuntu Restricted Extras has traditionally not listed packages as
dependancies, so that people can remove whichever packages they wish,
and still keep the metapackage.

[Bug 319776] Re: don't allow shut down if there are other user with opened sessions

2009-01-21 Thread Sarah Hobbs
On intrepid, Gnome no longer offers the option that a non-superuser can
shut down, only log out.

For the superuser, 'shut down' just logs you out, and takes you back to
gdm, when others are logged in. (Perhaps there should be an explanation
here). Presumably one can then force shutdown from gdm.

Looks like hibernate and suspend also don't work for non-super-users.

It sounds like you accidently gave your friends administrator
permissions, in which case, they should be able to administer the
machines like you?

[Bug 310754] Re: Merge dput 0.9.2.36 from debian unstable (main)

2008-12-22 Thread Sarah Hobbs
patch looks fine, although I suspect some of these changes should
probably go to debian as well.

I'm also unconvinced about changing the default host - this has been
uploading directly to ubuntu since edgy, and seems to work for a lot of
people. I know that various people who are less confident (or take less
risks) decide to manually change it themselves - but I suspect that
these people are fewer than those people who are confident, and want it
to Just Work, like it has done so previously. Having things work out of
the box is usually a good idea!
