[Bug 302941] [NEW] add libgail18 to gdm dependencies

2008-11-27 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After upgrading gdm to version 2.20.8-0ubuntu4, gdmgreeter stopped
working (black screen with mouse cursor on machine boot).

Further investigation (ldd on gdmgreeter) showed, that libgail18 library

dependencies. Manually installing this package resolves the problem.

[Bug 242966] [NEW] snd_pcsp can take precedence of usb soundcard

2008-06-25 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

(Ubuntu Intrepid)

Latest changes in ALSA brought a snd-pcsp driver (and gave its module -2
index), which loads automatically. In my case, it took place of a USB
soundcard (card index 1 changed to 2, after recent changes). As
configuration files (/etc/asound.conf) refer to this card numerically,
sound stopped working.

cat /proc/asound/cards revealed the source of the problem (the snd-pcsp
module).

Suggested solution: blacklist snd-pcsp, which will eliminate this
problem OR throw this module out of the kernel.

[Bug 146682] Re: [Gutsy] wodim does not burn while cdrecord does

2007-12-26 Thread Wit Wilinski
wodim still does not work on Gutsy. It is not suid root, and by defaults, does
not have access to CD drive.
cdrecord found in gutsy's multiverse is set suid root and works correctly. To
make wodim work, one has to (permissions get reset after reboot because of
using udev/hal) chgrp cdrom /dev/scd* AND chmod g+w /dev/scd*

Still, graphical tools using wodim (brasero and nautilus-cd-burner)
claim there is no disk inserted (though CD/DVD writing is possible from
command line!)

[Bug 129887] default snd-usb-audio alsa buffer too low (causes pops and clicks)

2007-08-02 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

Default sound buffer set by ALSA for USB soundcards (in my case 0d8c:0006
C-Media Electronics, Inc. with CM-106 chipset, usb-audio driver,
/proc/asound/cards says:
 0 [Audio  ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio
  USB Audio at usb-:00:1d.0-2, full speed
) is too low for ordinary, 2-channel playback. Sound skips from time to time
regardless of the system load and I/O usage. Seems the latency of PCI/USB bus
is higher than the default buffer size set by ALSA. The configuration which
resolves the problem looks like this (/etc/asound.conf):

defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0

pcm.card0 {
  type hw
  card 0
}

pcm.dmixer {
  type dmix
  ipc_key 1025
  slave {
pcm hw:0,0
period_time 0
period_size 2048
buffer_size 32768
rate 48000
  }
  bindings {
0 0
1 1
  }
}
pcm.skype {
  type asym

  playback.pcm dmixer
  capture.pcm card0
}

pcm.!default {
  type plug
  slave.pcm skype
}

The buffer_size used here might be too large, but I haven't encountered
any problems since using that configuration.

[Bug 124066] closing last playlist tab makes it unable to display any playlist again

2007-07-04 Thread Wit Wilinski

I encountered a problem, where the current playlist (queue of tracks to
be played) disappears and does not appear again. I managed to close the
tab with last playlist, then - even after exaile restart - playlist on
the right side of the window would not appear (there was empty space
instead of playlist widget).

This could have something to do with writing translated(!) colum names
for column widths to configuration file [i'm using exaile with pl_PL
locales].

I got back to a useful state after removing all translated lines from
configuration file, though that might not be the right reason...

[Bug 118944] Gutsy python-tagpy depends on old libboost-python making it uninstallable

Sounds like kernel panic. Could you try verbose boot and tell us, what
error message did kernel print?

[Bug 90097] Re: USB memory stick light stays on after safely remove (KDE)

2007-03-26 Thread Wit Wilinski
'Safely remove' unmounts the device, so the light on the usb-storage
device means nothing. Umount syncs all cached data to the device, so it
can be removed any time, after umount has finished.

I have never had an issue with data loss after umounting a device (while
I had a problem once, when I forgot to umount it;)

[Bug 90097] Re: USB memory stick light stays on after safely remove (KDE)

2007-03-26 Thread Wit Wilinski
IMO turning off the LED on usb-storage device would involve patching the
kernel, so this bug should probably be reported upstream, not in
K/Ubuntu.

I use pretty stock Kubuntu system (just kernel is self-compiled) and
desktop icons for removable devices disappear _after_ umount finishes
(eg. i get an ugly dialog window with a progress bar at 0%, which then
suddenly changes to 100% after umount exits). At this point, all data is
flushed, so the device is safe to remove.

Tested with iPod Shuffle and 2.5 laptop drive in USB2 enclosure.

[Bug 71413] Re: Calendar is set for 1971-11-11 and can't be reset

2007-03-26 Thread Wit Wilinski
Would be good to know if all affected machines have PowerPC processors.
I booted an ibook g3 into kubuntu-livecd once and don't recall any
problems with system clock. Can't check it now, as I sold that machine.

feisty to use 2.5 version)

[Bug 75098] Re: Kubuntu should include nscd DNS cache deamon by default

2007-03-17 Thread Wit Wilinski
What about using pdnsd for that? It was designed as a DNS cache server
and works pretty efficiently.

The only thing, that DNS updates would have to modify /etc/pdnsd.conf
and put only 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf

The file You've provided fixes the problem, indeed.
Garbage is gone, page comes out clean.

[Bug 88258] Re: Kubuntu often fails to shut down properly

2007-02-28 Thread Wit Wilinski
You might be actually right about the kernel package, as this problem
disappeared since I recompiled the kernel using stock kernel.org source (with
suspend2 and ck patches).
It might be as well usplash or initrd, as I disabled these as well.

[Bug 88745] Re: removing libnss-mdnss leaves system unusable

2007-02-28 Thread Wit Wilinski
Actually, it is not libnss-mdns's fault alone.

Who's guilty? /etc/nsswitch.conf
libnss-mdns should REMOVE its entries from this file upon removal.

To manually repair the system, simply change the line starting with
hosts: in /etc/nsswitch.conf to read:

hosts: files dns

But still, libnss-mdns needs a fix in its uninstallation script

[Bug 87791] [feisty/x86] new libX11 with XCB crashes Matlab

2007-02-25 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

Trying to open any window in Matlab7 causes the whole application to
crash. It is probably matlab's fault, as it is an 'old beast' using lots
of depreceated APIs. The error I got is:

MATLAB: xcb_xlib.c:41: xcb_xlib_lock: Assertion `!c-xlib.lock' failed.
Aborted

Temporary fix is to revert to pre-XCB libX11.

[Bug 87791] Re: [feisty/x86] new libX11 with XCB crashes Matlab

2007-02-25 Thread Wit Wilinski
Agreed, that the bug is not within Ubuntu. But how am I supposed to run buggy,
obsolete commercial software in Feisty?
Maybe a choice of libX11 could be included? Or preloading of old libX11 ? Say:
run_with_old_libx11 commercial_application_binary ?

I really doubt that commercial vendors will release bugfixes for their
products. It's probably not only Matlab, but some others closed-source
products, as Cedega, as well

[Bug 87597] each printed page starts with line of 'garbage' (Laserjet 4+ over network)

2007-02-24 Thread Wit Wilinski
Public bug reported:

The printing system in feisty got broken by one of the most recent
updates (last few days). Each page (checked both ljet4 and hpijs
drivers) prints with a line of ASCII garbage (some data not understood
by the printer).

Prints are fine on Kubuntu 6.10 with the same settings.

I've got a Laserjet 4+ printer running over ethernet with HP JetDirect
module. It used to work fine on feisty until one of recent upgrades.
After it got broken, I tried downgrading *cups* to 1.2.7, but it didn't
help. It could be something with openprinting PPD files, but I'm not
sure whether it is the cause...
