[Bug 1180899] Re: Update list hides important details
OK, there are three pieces of information that is present in all packages: the package name, the description synopsis, and the extended description, and there are restrictions on how they interact. (Not actually restrictions as in MUST NOT in the RFC 2119 sense, but a strong SHOULD NOT). The Policy does not talk about the actual name. 3.1: The package name must be unique. 3.4: The description as a whole must be descriptive. (Duh.) The description synopsis should contain the most important information for such cases when the extended synopsis is not displayed, such as the “apt-cache search” output, one line per package. 3.4.1: The description synopsis should not be redundant when displayed along with the package name. I interpret the “Remember that in many situations the user may only see the synopsis line - make it as informative as you can” part as “the synopsis line must be reasonably descriptive in absence of the extended description”, not as “the synopsis line can be displayed without the package name in sight”. 3.4.2: The extended description is not a continuation of the synopsis; it needs to stand on its own. Presumably, it is displayed in a separate pane or as a separate text section. Also presumably, getting the extended description requires some user effort. For the Update Manager, I think we can agree the extended description is mostly irrelevant: it makes no sense to display it for all packages. Its place is in the details pane, along with the relevant changelog excerpt. The question is about the package name and the description synopsis. You defend the position that the description synopsis is sufficient. However, the synopsis cannot contain the package name, by 3.4.1. And many packages have actual name as the package name, so, in general, the synopsis will not contain the actual name. It follows that, until and unless a new field containing the actual name is added, we need the package name displayed at all times, because it’s the closest that we have. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1180899 Title: Update list hides important details To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1180899/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1180899] Re: Update list hides important details
I will quote once more from the Policy. 3.4, The description of a package: The description should describe the package (the program) to a user (system administrator) who has never met it before so that they have enough information to decide whether they want to install it. In other words, it’s the phrase with which a package introduces itself: “Hi! I’m [firefox], a [Safe and easy web browser from Mozilla].” “Hello! My name is [bzr], I am an [easy to use distributed version control system]”. Note how the description extends on the package name and does not (and need not) make sense without it. When I installed Ubuntu for the first time, I knew no preinstalled packages by name and it might be convenient if they introduced themselves at first, second, maybe fifth update. Now that I’ve been using Ubuntu for 6 years straight, it’s getting silly. If you want to argue that bzr should be named bazaar, no problem. File a bug against bzr, so that it be renamed and bzr made a transitional dummy package. But please do not ask that bzr be *described* as “Bazaar”: this description says nothing to help me decide if I want it. The solution is not to put program titles into the description, it is to show package names *along with* the description. BTW lintian complains not only at package name included literally in the synopsis line, but also with minor changes, e.g. in letter case. So e.g. putting the word “Firefox” in the synopsis won’t fly.

[Bug 299158] Re: Liberation Mono, Droid Sans Mono: Combining diacritics out of place
I’m on Ubuntu 13.04, for me, pango-view --font='Liberation Mono' test- diac renders incorrectly (with the acute over e, not a). It’s not only gnome-terminal that is affected — gedit, mousepad, xterm, firefox too. Precomposed letters with accents are a workaround, but it only works for Latin and Greek letters. For Cyrillic and other scripts, precomposed forms do not exist in Unicode. For consistency, I prefer using combining accents exclusively, and reporting any bugs that arise. I believe, when a character is absent in a font, pango takes it from another font that does have it. Does this behavior extend to combining diacritics? If so, reproducibility of this bug depends on which other fonts are installed, and which font gets selected to provide the incorrectly positioned combining acute accent as fallback. [Bug 1180899] [NEW] Update list hides important details
Public bug reported: Since Ubuntu Raring, update-manager no longer shows any useful information by default. I click the Update Manager icon in the indicator area, select “Show updates”, it shows a list of application names and “Xubuntu base”, with download size in the right-hand column. To see exact package names and changelogs, I have to expand the “Xubuntu base” node, expand the “Technical description” area and click through each package. This new display format is a regression for me. In Precise, the list was flat and displayed application names (package descriptions), package names and download size, all in the main list, which only required me to scroll through to see the list of updates and quickly decide if I want to update now or defer until a more convenient moment; in the new version, I am confused by multiple packages that have identical descriptions. As a user familiar with package naming conventions, I would like to see the package names and possibly versions (both installed and available), in the list of updates. On the other hand, the download size of each individual package is of low importance to me, as I have a fast and unlimited Internet connection. I therefore suggest that the list of columns should be configurable (even if via dconf-editor only), and that columns be added for package name, installed version and available version. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1180899 Title: Update list hides important details To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1180899/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 135874] Re: [needs-packaging] StepMania
The currently packaged version is compiled without ffmpeg and theora, and so does not play background videos. Long story: The original tarball contains a build.sh script that pulls in ffmpeg rev 8448 from svn.mplayerhq.hu. That svn repository, in turn, contains a svn:external that refers to svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/libswscale — in other words, the *current* version of libswscale. As a result, libswscale fails to compile. The configure script then detects that not all of ffmpeg libraries are available, and disables the use of ffmpeg. The ffmpeg.patch attempts to fix this by modifying autoconf/m4/video.m4 to accept any ffmpeg versions. In theory, this would allow to build stepmania with ffmpeg libraries installed on the system. However, for this to work, the configure script must be updated via autoconf/automake, and the original tarball does not include an autogen.sh script to accomplish this (although upstream svn repository does). With the original configure script, the system-installed ffmpeg libraries do not pass the version check, and are disabled. To sum it up, there are two ways to build a fully functional binary: * Change the build.sh script to pull ffmpeg revision 8448 without libswscale, and then pull libswscale revision 22713 (which was current at the time ffm...@8448 was committed). Build via build.sh. * Use autogen.sh from the stepmania svn repository to update the configure script. Build via ./configure ./make. I should also note that this particular version (cvs-2007-11-07) has the desirable property of being close enough to the version used in Pump It Up PRO — the theme from PIU PRO can be adapted easily enough not to crash this version of Stepmania. I imagine this will also be the case with Lucid when it goes stable. -- Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
I have added another patch that adds gconf settings for corner taps. Available in my PPA for Lucid only. As for changing defaults, I don’t really have a strong opinion. [Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
Alex Dicks wrote on 2010-03-16: Perhaps the defaults for those keys could be changed to give the Jaunty behaviour back? And then users who started using Ubuntu during the Karmic era will file a bug that Lucid changed the defaults and broke their habits, just as we are blaming Karmic here. Alvaro Kuolas wrote: This is only a Debian/Ubuntu patch that causes so much trouble? No, what causes the trouble is upstream development in GNOME. === In fact, I am not fully content with my patch, for two reasons. First and foremost, the Synaptics tap-to-button mapping is only updated whenever gconf settings change for button assignments, the master tap- to-click on/off switch, or the left/right-handed switch. The right thing to do would be to watch for every DeviceMappingNotify on every input device, so that if the user remaps buttons via e.g. xinput, taps continue working without the user having to go disable/re-enable them. I have not yet managed to get that working, and that is going to be a large change that is better off in the next development phase. Second, Ubuntu includes corner taps in the definition of tap-to-click, as opposed to GNOME who don’t. This means that in Ubuntu the corner-to- button mapping needs similar treatment — for device button mapping and for customization. I will do an update as time allows.

OK, here’s a status update. The patch I sent upstream has passed peer review, but GNOME is currently in feature freeze in preparation for 2.30 release. I have filed for a freeze break, but only received one “not totally against” reply so far, so I’m not confident a break will be granted. So I’d like to ask if this patch can be accepted into Lucid as a debdiff. If so, how would I go about submitting it, apart from providing the patch itself? ** Patch added: Add tap-to-click gconf settings to gnome-settings-daemon http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39740497/0001-Add-tap-to-click-button-settings.v7.patch ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 311434] Re: Add UI toggle for show controls for un-maximized windows
I will second this feature request. My use case is: * A netbook with a 1024×600 screen. * GNOME panel on top, 24px high. * Remote desktop connection to another machine. Since screen estate is at a premium, I start the connection with: rdesktop -Dg 1024x576+0+24 server.ip (-D to remove window decorations, -g to set window geometry). In this setup, the rdesktop window is not considered maximized and does not get a window-picker-applet title; but, because of -D, it does not have a title of its own. At the same time, it is highly desirable to see the window title text because it contains the name of the server connected to. -- Add UI toggle for show controls for un-maximized windows https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311434 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
OK, I looked a little further, here’s my understanding. * The touchpad is first configured with xorg.conf, hal policies and the code in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. * When GNOME starts, the gnome-settings-daemon kicks in. It has a mouse plugin that resets TapButton# settings every once in a while, and on each change of the tap_to_click gconf setting. It does that by changing the Synaptics Tap Action property, replacing the 5th, 6th and 7th values with (0,0,0) or (1,3,2) to disable or enable tap-to-click, respectively. * The Synaptics Tap Action property is documented in synaptics(4): “order: RT, RB, LT, LB, F1, F2, F3.” So, 1-finger tap is set to button 1 (left), 2-finger tap to button 3 (right), and 3-finger tap to button 2 (middle). * The xserver-xorg-input-synaptics patch 104_always_enable_tapping.patch is irrelevant because it would only affect the initial setup, which is overridden by gnome-settings-daemon mouse plugin. * The xserver-xorg-input-synaptics patch 105_correct_multifinger_click.patch is irrelevant because it is commented out, and because it dealt with gestures like “put 2 or 3 fingers on the touchpad and click the physical left button” rather than “tap with 2 or 3 buttons”. * The Jaunty version of gnome-settings-daemon does not include the tap-to-click code, which explains why the bug appeared in Karmic. I have created a patch for gnome-settings-daemon that adds three gconf settings and passes their values into Synaptics Tap Action property, and submitted it to the GNOME Bugzilla at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598820#c10 . ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #598820 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598820 -- Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 322695] [NEW] Cite.php: a space appears after each reference marker
Public bug reported: Version info: Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10, MediaWiki 1:1.12.0-2ubuntu0.1, mediawiki-extensions 1.4 When a ref/ref tag is used in a MediaWiki article to add a footnote, an extraneous space appears after the footnote marker. This may cause the following punctuation to be line-wrapped incorrectly. To reproduce: * Create and save a page containing the following markup: == Lorem ipsumrefdolor sit/refamet. references/ == Expected: * In the displayed page, the footnote marker is immediately followed by the word 'amet'. Observed: * In the displayed page, the footnote marker appears to be followed by a space and then the word 'amet'. * In the generated HTML, the /sup closing the footnote marker is followed by an HTML comment containing the NewPP limit report, then by a newline, then the word 'amet'. Cause: * The extension Cite.php as packaged is an obsolete version. Specifically, it uses a deprecated method of parsing the contents of ref…/ref that has a side effect of outputting a preprocessor limits report comment followed by a newline, after each footnote marker. This newline is then interpreted by browsers as a space.
