Related to this bug #1117730 ?

PS It sucks that nm-applet which has been working fine for many years
suddenly becomes unusable and it takes years to fix the bugs. Not cool.

[Bug 971878] Re: [ThinkPad W510, Conexant CX20585, Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem

2012-09-09 Thread Zoubidoo
@Elijah, Christoph

If more people prefer the amplification to be off by default, that's
fine by me.

After a quick google I do get the impression that quite a few people are
frustrated with not getting their hardware's max volume.

[Bug 971878] Re: [ThinkPad W510, Conexant CX20585, Speaker, Internal] volume slider problem

2012-09-07 Thread Zoubidoo
How about an amplification on/off switch in the sound preferences?

Some people want this changed, others don't. Can we find a compromise?

Here are the two cases:
1) People who can't get enough volume and have to fiddle in settings *every
time* they want to move the volume into the amplified zone (more than 100%)

2) People who are frustrated with the volume slider only useful up to 30%.

If the amplification is on by default, it will satisfy those who want the full
volume range. Those who are frustrated by the only-30%-useful slider can reach
into settings to disable amplification. It'd be a stored setting, so there's
no need to fiddle again.

Seems straightforward - am I missing something?

[Bug 555573] Re: [g41] GPU hung: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error

2012-01-04 Thread Zoubidoo
This bug was reported on 2010-04-05 and as of January 2012 it's still
not fixed.

It's still unassigned and not linked to any upstream bugs.

At least 60 other people are observing the problem. Hardly a rare bug.

In my particular case the system became so unstable with X server hangs
that it forced me to change to a non-LTS release.

Anyway this kind of thing shouldn't be happening - it makes ubuntu look
unstable. Think of all those people who have the problem but are unable
to track down this bug report.

In future it's probably best to say this hardware is not supported.

[Bug 902173] [NEW] Completely broken in 10.04 x64 Cannot edit subtitle text.

2011-12-09 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

gnome-subtitles 0.9.1-2
libmono2.0-cil 2.4.4~svn15184
Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS x86_64

Completely broken:
Cannot edit subtitle text.
Create a few subtitles without text, save, then cannot load that srt file:
Unable to detect the subtitle format. Please check that the file type is
supported.

To reproduce:
$ gnome-subtitles
click new (also saving the srt does not help)
click on text box to edit - nothing happens.

Not much use this program if you can't add subtitles ;-)
Not much use this program if you can't load the files it itself created.

Perhaps a mono upgrade broke everything?

[Bug 834880] [NEW] New actions to increase decrease volume, skip to next track

Also confirming for Dell Vostro 1500 with 32-bit Maverick.
The workaround (Shutdown and restart with external microphone plugged in) works

This is clearly a software problem and made me look bad when I was

Does anyone have any suggestions for upstream bugs?

[Bug 435990] Re: fox fatigue: getting progessively slower until unusable

2010-11-06 Thread Zoubidoo
@drew: running a trace for lengthy periods is simply not practical for
me.

Here is an update:

Firefox has been running for 1 week and it has been getting
progressively slower. I have closed all tabs so that I have only one
window open. This window has only one tab and there is nothing rendered
in that tab (it's blank).

*** Firefox is *continuously* using 28% of the CPU (Intel
t6...@2.20ghz). ***

So what is firefox doing? If you don't know, it's time you guys added
some instrumentation. What's the point of having new features if it
runs like a dinosaur and we all migrate to Chrome?

Platform: firefox 3.6.12, but this has happened with all versions since
at least 3.5.3. Extensions as above.

[Bug 662630] [NEW] festival: can't open /dev/dsp

2010-10-18 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: festival

When running festival from the command line it has trouble accessing the
sound device reporting can't open /dev/dsp

After troubleshooting I found that this problem has been around since
Dapper and still occurs in Lucid. But the workaround is very easy:

Create ~/.festivalrc with the following content

;use ALSA
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Method 'Audio_Command)
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Command aplay -q -c 1 -t raw -f s16 -r $SR $FILE)

Perhaps we could update the festival package so that no troubleshooting
or workaround is necessary.

[Bug 650901] [NEW] NetworkManager steals focus

2010-09-29 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

NetworkManager steals focus when it pops up a window. This occurs when
it fails to connect to an AP and pops up with a Wireless Network
Authentication Required window.

If the user happens to be typing at that time, the text will be
redirected into NetworkManager. If the user happens to be doing a sudo,
it might be a password which is a security risk.

Failure to connect should be handled differently, for instance a
different icon in the panel.

[Bug 435990] Re: fox fatigue: getting progessively slower until unusable

2010-08-28 Thread Zoubidoo
@drew: If you read the rest of the bug description you'll see this isn't
about a crash. So a backtrace is not possible and an strace would run
into the gigabytes.

The flash/java versions are not particularly relevant because this bug dates
from at least release 9.04 so the versions have changes several times without
affecting the bug. But for completeness:
openjdk-6-jre 6b18-1.8.1-0ubuntu1
flashplugin-installer 10.1.82.76ubuntu0.10.04.2

The extensions in use have already been listed above. For completeness
here they are again: flashblock, adblock plus, downloadhelper.

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem. Good luck
with that. I don't think this bug will be understood until we have some
way of seeing where the CPU cycles are going. A useful step forward
would be to see if the cpu being hogged in one of the extensions or in
firefox, and if it's in firefox what part. Suggestions to achieve that
would be helpful.

To reproduce: run qiv on a jpg image from a terminal and press f a few
times. Watch the terminal. (It doesn't work with all jpgs, try a few
different jpgs if necessary).

In .xsession-errors I'm getting:

Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0
timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.
Window manager warning: Treating resize request of legacy application 0x4800040
(qiv: Deskt) as a fullscreen request

Could qiv be using deprecated library calls?

qiv 2.2.2-1, up to date Ubuntu 10.04 on 32 bit hardware.

[Bug 625707] Re: (qiv:18951): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

2010-08-28 Thread Zoubidoo
Does qiv set _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN?

OOo is not setting _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN so compiz is refusing to
allow it to resize to cover the panel, as it is supposed to. Metacity
appears to have a hack for this as when entering presentation mode it
says Window manager warning: Treating resize request of legacy
application 0x44045cc (OpenOffice) as a fullscreen request.

We have disabled this workaround in compiz as it causes other problems
(with totem, for example).

[Bug 609372] Re: Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML graphics corruption after resume from suspend

2010-08-04 Thread Zoubidoo
Not 100% sure this is the same problem.

I'm observing video corruption when playing videos with mplayer, vlc,
etc. Initially video clips play perfectly, then at some point video
clips appear all corrupted until reboot. The colours are all wrong and
the resolution is too low. I can't show the corruption because a
screenshot only captures a black screen. I have been using suspend but
couldn't say for sure that it's the cause.

The video corruption goes away if I use opengl for video out: mplayer

@Gabe: I don't think this bug report is incomplete. The description is
as complete as it can be. Saying try without flash is about as
helpful as saying switch off your computer for a week. If firefox

resolved much faster.

If there's an add-on for cpu usage tracking that would help progress
this bug, I'll be happy to give it a try.

[Bug 515915] Re: evince hangs on start-up EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)

2010-03-28 Thread Zoubidoo
The problem went away for a few weeks and then reappeared. Waiting 30
seconds to open a 1 page pdf is not normal. During the hanging, the cpu
is idling, so it's not doing some heavy duty calculation.

I have attached a new backtrace with more debug symbols. The program
was interrupted with ^C while hanging.

Note that there are still no symbols no libdbus. Which package is it?

I have these available:

[Bug 515915] [NEW] evince hangs on start-up EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)

2010-02-02 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince is hanging when trying to open a pdf. After a delay of at least
10 seconds (sometimes much more), with no cpu load, it resumes. The pdf
file is present and on local filestore.

I ran strace and the hang coincides with
read(7, 0x9e48540, 2048)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
See below for more strace output.

Next I tried dbus-launch:
$ dbus-launch evince PIIS1097276509006418.pdf

** (evince:24621): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name
'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

But I don't know what that means and if it is related.

This has become such a pain, I use xpdf now.

That is interesting.

I wonder if it could be related to spell checking. I'm going to try

RE: [Bug 435990] Re: fox fatigue: getting progessively slower until unusable

2009-11-17 Thread Zoubidoo

Since we both have the DownloadHelper extension I tried disabling it and
rebooting, but Firefox still gets very slow after a while.

Thanks for trying that. I suspected DownloaderHelper because
downloading many Youtube clips seemed to accelerate the slowdown.
Perhaps it could be flash-related?

It's an annoying bug to troubleshoot because there is no way of reproducing it
quickly.

[Bug 435990] [NEW] fox fatigue: getting progessively slower until unusable

2009-09-24 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Firefox is getting slower and slower over several days usage without
restart. After having had several hundred tabs open, with under 30 at
any one time, the Shiretoko requires more and more cpu to perform the
same tasks. It is most noticeable when switching between virtual
desktops (rendering can take 2 seconds) and when typed text takes more
than a second to appear.

Of course, this problem only arises because the Fox is so stable. Kudos
to the developers.

firefox-3.5:
  Installed: 3.5.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.2
  Candidate: 3.5.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.2

[Bug 365434] [NEW] Instability between upgrade and restart (e.g. Assertion failed)

2009-04-23 Thread Zoubidoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

When firefox is upgraded with apt-get, a firefox restart is required.
But between the upgrade and the (firefox) restart, firefox behaves
abnormally. It is not always practical to restart firefox immediately,
e.g. the user might be writing an email or filling in a form. Errors
include: assertion failed when a URL is entered in the URL bar, right
click not giving context-sensitive menus (e.g. save image when over an
image). Expected behaviour: Firefox should continue to work normally.

To reproduce:
 - start firefox
 - upgrade firefox (apt) without stopping firefox
 - input a URL on the address bar

This happened again today on the release of 3.09

$ apt-cache policy firefox

  Installed: 3.0.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

[Bug 207194] Re: Not Connected? printer popup every 10 seconds or so

2008-08-27 Thread Zoubidoo
If this bug is about the annoying not connected notification then I
can confirm this problem in Hardy.

The shared printer is switched off so the job can't complete. In this
case the not connected notification is correct. But the notification
keeps coming back every 10 seconds even after having been cancelled and
it is quite irritating.

Correct behaviour: Once the Not connected bubble has been cancelled,
do not notify again and change the printer icon to indicate the problem.

apt-file 2.1.0

$ sudo apt-file update
Can't get http://trylegaldownloads.de/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Contents-i386.gz

I checked the location and while there are some files the one above is
absent.

This is different from the assigned debian bug (that is about a proxy issue)

A related debian bug is
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=476961
apt-file 2.1.2 fixes the problem.

So does this fix the problem on ubuntu boxes too? If so how about
getting it released?

RE: [Bug 182716] Re: bcm4306, bcm4309, bcm4311, bcm4312 with b43 : Authentication with AP doesn't work.

2008-08-19 Thread Zoubidoo

Hi Larry and colleagues,

I wonder if we could have an update on this bug.
 - Has the problem been pinned down?
 - Is there a kernel patch accepted or in the pipeline?
 - Do we know yet in which kernel release the problem will be fixed and can we
expect to see it in the repos any time soon?
 - For which cards will the problem be solved?
 - Is there a workaround for everyone who has this bug or does it need to be
case-by-case?

Many thanks,
Z.
