[Bug 1946507] Re: Ubuntu Install Setup Freeze

2022-03-02 Thread falstaff
It seems that Ubuntu 20.04.4 gets stuck at the same step with the same
traces appearing in the kernel log. Since the installer uses the same
kernel (5.13) it likely is caused by that kernel version. Ubuntu 22.04
(nightly as of 20220301, which seems to come with 5.15) seems to work
fine here.

[Bug 1946507] Re: Ubuntu Install Setup Freeze

2022-03-02 Thread falstaff
Similar hang on a T440s trying to install Ubuntu 21.10. The system
currently has a fresh Windows 11 copy on half of its SSD hard drive. It
seems that ntfsresize causes the kernel to hang. Trying to install
Ubuntu gets stuck in Step 4. Install logs attached.

Hardware wise, the system seems to work fine.

[Bug 1879382] Re: mysqld not starting after upgrade (apparmor)

2020-05-18 Thread falstaff
As the log actually states, the problem was that another instance of
mysqld was using the port:

Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Address already in use

I am still leaving this issue open as the appamore DENIED operation
might be something which should be fixed in the apparmor profile.

** Summary changed:

- mysqld not starting after upgrade (apparmor)
+ mysqld DENIED audit messages for /proc/sys/kernel/random/boot_id (apparmor)

Observed the same issue on Ubuntu 16.04.4 with a Dell R440 and a RAID 5
consisting of 3 10k SAS disks. Using 16.04+UCA-Pike resolved the issue
just fine.

[Bug 1342580] Re: tftpd-hpa doesn't start on boot

2015-01-05 Thread falstaff
The proposed fix (from #1 as well as the corrected version from #5) does
not solve the problem for me. Actually, when I look at what time the
system tries to start the tftp-hpa process, it makes it even worse: The
process gets started earlier (around ~11s vs ~13s)! Also, the relevant
errors look somewhat different (IPv6 resolve error). Fwiw, I use
/etc/network/interface to configure eth1 statically.

A workaround for my case was to bind to the IPv4 address explicitly:

In /etc/default/tftpd-hpa:

TFTP_ADDRESS=0.0.0.0:69

[Bug 1318551] Re: Kernel Panic - not syncing: An NMI occurred, please see the Integrated Management Log for details.

2014-08-03 Thread falstaff
The Kernel installed in our environment is compiled using GCC 4.8.2
(check dmesg | head). Hence I don't think this is related.

We had the kernel panic again last week (see attachment). We added the
hpwdt module to blacklist, which hopefully works around this problem. We
also updated the BIOS, but not sure whether this would have solved the
problem. Since its a production server, I cannot do any further tests to
help solve this problem, sorry.

2014-07-30 Thread falstaff
We see this or a similar issue on a DL360 G7. As visible in the stack
trace, we are using VirtualBox. However, I think this is not related
since we used the same version on a earlier Kernel. We also upgraded to
latest VirtualBox version after the last crash, however the system
crashed again since then.

[Bug 1091464] Re: Unable to chainload Windows 8 with Secure Boot enabled

2012-12-19 Thread falstaff
On my Samsung Series 9 device I do have the exactly same behavior.

I documented this in my blog post:
http://falstaff.agner.ch/2012/12/18/ubuntu-12-10-and-windows-8-with-secure-boot-mode/

However, I observed that my original Windows Boot Manager has a slightly
different file path:

Boot0008* Windows Boot Manager HD(2,96800,32000,f1fdeac1-d057-4f3b-
9f66-6f74eb3b469b)File(\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi)

compared to Grub:
/ACPI(a0341d0,0)/UnknownMessaging(12)/HD(2,fa800,96000,372001a2fb07f544,a3,ff)/File(\EFI\Microsoft\Boot)/File(bootmgfw.efi).

However, the same menu entry works if I disable Secure Boot. It looks
like this slightly different file path only leads to an error when UEFI
tries to check the signature

[Bug 1024383] Re: invalid Windows EFI entries in GRUB

2012-12-18 Thread falstaff
I made a script which creates working boot entries for Windows 7/8 as
long as the EFI system partition is mounted at /boot/efi (which normally
happens):

https://gist.github.com/4330598

Use it like this:

$ wget
https://gist.github.com/raw/4330598/adaf598a78d568dbfada596441bdfad3b4dd3f97/25_windows_uefi
$ sudo su

# chmod +x /etc/grub.d/25_windows_uefi
# echo GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true /etc/default/grub # disable broken

# update-grub

[Bug 897008] Re: HDMI: no sound

2012-11-26 Thread falstaff
After installing Ubuntu 12.10 on a system with a ATI Radeon HD 4650
(RV730) I had no sound over HDMI. The HDMI adapter wasn't in the list
of chooseable output devices for Pulseaudio (Sound configuration), so
this works correctly for 12.10.

The mentioned parameter radeon.audio=1 added the entry in the
Pulseaudio configuration (Sound configuration) and the HDMI audio output
works so far flawless.

[Bug 867806] Re: df -h permission denied error

2011-11-24 Thread falstaff
This still happens to me as soon as an User is logged in. It has a nasty
side effect in munin, which tries to get harddisk usage using df. df's
return value in that case is not 0, so the result is not being
processed. While it's possible to fix that in munin, its nevertheless a
bit strange that df return's that error and therfore return 1 as error
value.

[Bug 453807] Re: nm_vpn_connection_connect_cb(): VPN connection 'xyz' failed to connect: 'No VPN secrets!'.

2009-12-02 Thread falstaff
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 360818 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/360818

I experience this problem too, and its getting really anying. Therefor I
started to debug this problem by myself. If have no idea of
NetworkManager by grepping through the source I found out that the
message is generated from nm-openvpn-service.c.

I compiled the network-manager-openvpn service by cloning it from the git
repository and install some additional packages (namely libdbus-glib-1-dev
libnm-glib-dev intltool libtool autoconf libgtk2.0-dev libglade2-dev
libgconf2-dev libgnome-keyring-dev). Then I executed this...
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr/bin/ --libexecdir=/usr/lib/network-manager-openvpn/
make

This then compiled the service and i could stat it by invoking

sudo ./src/nm-openvpn-service

The applet then uses this newly compiled service. I added some debug messages
and found this out:
The function real_connect calls nm_connection_get_setting, which contains the
settings for the choosen vpn. Later then, the settings are verified, and it
fails when he tries to verify the secret. Even if there is no secret set at the
applet, the applet sets a secret property with the name no-secret to true.

I added right after the nm_connection_get_setting call this code:
tmp = nm_setting_vpn_get_secret (s_vpn, NM_OPENVPN_KEY_NOSECRET);
nm_info(No Secert Property: %s, tmp);

Each time when it worked, this code returns that:
** Message: info No Secert Property: true

But most of the time, everytime it fails, this code returns that:
** Message: info No Secert Property: (null)

The property is sometimes set, and sometimes not! I do have no idea why
this can happen, but I suggest there is a race condition somewhere. I
would have to debug the nm_connection_get_setting, which belongs to
libnm-util1. Would nice if a developer with more know how in this area
could have a look why this property is not set sometimes. Or give me
hints what I could test/where to search exactly...

Hi,

I attached nsswitch.conf. The config in question in smb.conf is commented out:
# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names

; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

I think I have a copied version of smb.conf from an older instalation,
but I did not experienced such hangs. I discovered that starting the
samba daemon also takes a long time...

[Bug 479614] Re: net usershare info takes too long (was: Nautilus hangs from time to time)

2009-11-12 Thread falstaff
I found out what was wrong:

I copied the smb.conf from my old setup, where I used KVM and had
several vnet's. This line in smb.conf allowed me to share files only
with my virtual machines:

   interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 vnet0 vnet1 vnet2

I did not setup kvm that way again, therefor I had no vnet0-2.
Whireshark showed me that the net command (and I suppose the samba
daemon did the same) did DNS requests asking for the IP of this non
existent devices (IN A requests for vnet0, vnet1 and vnet2, is this a
volitional behaviour?). I removed those non existent devices and the bug
is gone now. But anyway, shouldnt call nautilus-share such programms
asynchronious then?

[Bug 457899] Re: Impossible to add shared physical device

2009-11-12 Thread falstaff
I have this problem too. I have a karmic host and a karmic client. I
connect over ssh to the server. The server has br0 configured as bridge.
But I don't get the Shared physical devices listed in the GUI.

I edited the config files of the domain directly and added theses lines:
interface type='bridge'
  mac address='00:16:3e:1a:b3:ca'/
  source bridge='br0'/
/interface

This works like a charm, but would be nice to have a GUI to do that...

I found an interessiting blog articel about that problem:
http://ramblings.narrabilis.com/wp/virt-manager-cannot-select-shared-physical-device-when-configuring-network/

A default server installation doesnt have a hal daemon/dbus daemon
installed, has it?

[Bug 479614] Re: net usershare info takes too long (was: Nautilus hangs from time to time)

2009-11-12 Thread falstaff
Hi,

I attached nsswitch.conf. The config in question in smb.conf is commented out:
# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names
# to IP addresses
; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

I think I have a copied version of smb.conf from an older instalation,
but I did not experienced such hangs. I discovered that starting the
samba daemon also takes a long time...

[Bug 479614] Re: net usershare info takes too long (was: Nautilus hangs from time to time)

2009-11-12 Thread falstaff
I found out what was wrong:

I copied the smb.conf from my old setup, where I used KVM and had
several vnet's. This line in smb.conf allowed me to share files only
with my virtual machines:

   interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 vnet0 vnet1 vnet2

Sorry, and thanks for your work!

[Bug 479614] Re: net usershare info takes too long (was: Nautilus hangs from time to time)

2009-11-11 Thread falstaff
Hi,

My setup is a typical home setup, no domain server or something like
that, local user accounts. I have a D-Link DIR-855 Router at
192.168.220.1 which also acts as DHCP and DNS-Server (DNS-forwarding or
something like that). That router has also the ability to share an
attached USB-Harddisk (SMB?), altough, I have no harddisk attached and
dont use this feature. But I couldn't find a disable option...

I started strace on net usershare info:
$ time strace net usershare list 2 strace.txt

real1m24.027s
user0m0.020s
sys 0m0.040s

I attached the output. He waits for a longer period of time at each
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 5000-line.

When im offline (not connected via Ethernet/WLAN), the command is
allways very fast (and therefor nautilus doesnt hang...)

[Bug 479614] [NEW] Nautilus hangs from time to time

2009-11-09 Thread falstaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I boot up my laptop and start Nautilus for the first time it always
hangs several seconds (~30 seconds). Then it often works for some
minutes, and suddenly (especally when i type letters to select a folder)
he hangs again. While nautilus hangs, i started several times gdb and
printed a backtrace, he prints allways the same backtrace (see
attachment). This bug could be a duplcate of several other bugs
reporting hangs in nautilus, but they often lack information to descide
if this is true... therefor I opened a new one.

The stacktrace lacks some method names, can I do something to print more
method names (load symbols?) I can provide more information if you
need, the problem is reproducable all the time (and really anying btw
:-))

[Bug 457614] [NEW] Cryptsetup is started twice on startup

2009-10-21 Thread falstaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

I tried to use cryptsetup in karmic with a encrypted file (via losetup).
Cryptsetup supports this kind of configuration, my /etc/crypttab line looks
like this:
# target name source device key file options
container /home/user/myimage.img nonecipher=aes,check=ext2

However, I couldn't decrypt the file on startup. I started debugging
this problem and noticed that the startup function do_start from
/lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions is called twice, once from Upstart
(/etc/init/cryptdisks-enable.conf) and once from old init.d script
(/etc/rcS.d/S26cryptdisks-early). This leeds to the problem that the
first running script uses /dev/loop0 and the second /dev/loop1. The
first tries then to decrypt it, but the file isnt connected to
/dev/loop0 anymore, because the second losetup command which created
/dev/loop1 took the file. In the end, the file wasnt decrypted after 6
tried (two times 3 tries, for each startup script).

In my opinion, the upstart script doesnt work properly, it doesnt
support the noearly option from crypttab anyway (the old init.d script
is running twice, once with a early parameter (INITSTATE=early)...

[Bug 455024] [NEW] resize2fs: memory allocation failed while trying to resize

2009-10-18 Thread falstaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

When I try to resize a big EXT3 filesystem on a RAID5 (/dev/md0) from
5TB to 7TB i get this output:

# resize2fs -p /dev/md0
resize2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
Resizing the filesystem on /dev/md0 to 1709329888 (4k) blocks.

resize2fs: Memory allocation failed beim Versuch, die Größe von /dev/md0 zu
ändern
Please run 'e2fsck -fy /dev/md0' to fix the filesystem
after the aborted resize operation.

Note: Im using Ubuntu Hardy due to its LTS. But I installed the packages
from Karmic, because they had no special dependencies, I could install
them without any problem. The message above is from this updated
e2fsprogs version (note the version). I get the exactly same message
from the original e2fsprogs, except the last two lines (Please run...).

I use 4KB Blocks, so EXT3 should be able to address 8TB...

2009-03-11 Thread falstaff
I can contribute some informations too:

I have a contact which has an avatar (XMPP). When I start pidgin the
above error happens. But when I delete this picture in .purple/icon/,
startup succeeds, and pidigin write the picture again (with the same
filename, 67a550b3ac05c2d900cfba688e9ccfe2a86d840d.png). When I try to
restart, pidgin crashes again

When I now delete the avatar, and copy anothers avatar and rename it to
67a550b3ac05c2d900cfba688e9ccfe2a86d840d.png, the crash happens too...
So its not picture related.

Its somehow avatar/contact related...

Hm, nostra's report might be not related, as far as I could see is the
SD-Card-Reader not from Ricoh... Altough, its a hp laptop too

The bug was fixed after 2.6.28 release, therefor sd card might not work
on jaunty too, im going to test it as soon as beta is avilable...

[Bug 288385] Re: Kernel stops booting on HP EliteBook 8530w

2009-01-25 Thread falstaff
I've installed the latest Kernel from proposed, but it still doesnt work...
$ uname -a
Linux alpha 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Jan 23 13:58:13 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Might be that its another bug on 8530w. Anyway, there are some other outputs
now in dmesg, this two lines doesnt appear anymore:
[3.268250] ACPI: EC: missing OBF confirmation, don't expect it any longer.
[3.774580] ACPI: EC: missing write data confirmation, don't expect it any
longer.

On the Kernel bugzilla they talked about this lines, so it changes
something... Despite of the boot bug, I sometimes had some ACPI-Errors
when I was reading battery temerature, so it might be solve this
problem... :-)

Hm, I read the comments on Kernel Bugzilla once again. As far as I
understand the Fan always on bug is solved by a patch which is only
applied to 2.6.29-rc1 (second last comment). So I think it isn't
included in 2.6.27.7! Can we apply this patch in 2.6.27-11 anyway?

[Bug 316129] [NEW] Pidgin crashes at startup

I belive that there is something wrong with WEP-Key fetching over DBUS
from NM system service... That's why its working when I enter the key in

will be saved in the Settings file under /etc/NetworkManager/system-

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid ibex release

2008-10-15 Thread falstaff
I would love to see OpenOffice.org 3 in Intrepid.

I belive, that when you don't include it, everybody will get it through
PPA and download it anyway. Escpecially the users which really using it
daily! Yes, I know, its okey to use PPA's! I love them too! BUT when a
huge amount of users use a PPA, then the package should be included into
the distribution!

Colin wrote, its far to Risky to include it in this stage of the release
cycle. But what about the users which want to use OpenOffice.org 3 and
therefor use the PPA (which will be a huge amount of users)? Its risky
for them too! Thats why the its risky argument doesnt count for me! I
think its more risky to have a vast amount of users out there, which
uses the PPA just to get OOo 3. You cant just shirk responsibility and
say Ah, its not working? He is using PPA? Not our Problem! when
everybody is affected... So Ubuntu has to take care for the OOo 3
Packages anyway, which leads to the question why not include it!?

When users call for something, it sould be included! If you dont do it,
the users get it at their own way, and the system is probably less
stable. This brings a negative credibility regarding stability also

I would prefer a delay of Intrepid, if it bring OOo 3 with it...

[Bug 226273] Re: Local SDL window does not work

2008-10-02 Thread falstaff
You can use the VNC-Server Display in virt-manager and connect to the
console with a serial console. The QEMU Console is mapped to a
/dev/pts/X device... Works like a charm for me...

However, It would be nice to have the SDL Window working anyway... :-)

[Bug 243942] Re: Nautilus doesn't update title and address bar when clicking twice on open parent folder button

2008-07-21 Thread falstaff
I can reproduce this bug when I use Listview on Ubuntu 8.04.1. I even
can reproduce it with double backspace (which is the shortcut for this
function). I use backspace _very_ often to go the parents folder, and
notice this bug daily, its realy annoying!

[Bug 156542] Re: Fullscreen wine applications disapear from window list on workspace switch

2008-05-18 Thread falstaff
Hello,
I have a similar problem using Pokerstars. When I play a game I do often other
things beside (like writting comments to bugs ;-)). The window pops up when its
my turn to play... So I do something, and suddenly pokerstars pops up, and I do
my choise and continuing working... When I work on the second desktop, the
window disappears! I have to restart pokerstars, I cant find the window
anywhere...

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download Pokerstars Client form www.pokerstars.com
2. Create an account and login
3. Play a game (i.e. Sit Go, Play Money)
4. Wait until the game starts, select another window on the same desktop and
wait. You will see, the window gets focused when its your turn...
5. Do your turn, and change to the second desktop... Wait a while. No
Pokerstars window gets focused on the second desktop! When you change to the
first desktop, there is no Table window...

Thanks
