[Bug 882536] [NEW] Huge performance regression in broadcom wl driver

2011-10-27 Thread hexion
Public bug reported:

I noticed a huge performance regression in the wl.ko driver provided in Natty.
The regression wasn't present a few weeks back, so it could be the case that
the version bmcwl-kernel-source in natty was fine and the regression was
introduced in natty-updates:

apt-cache policy bcmwl-kernel-source
bcmwl-kernel-source:
  Instalados: 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu3.2
  Candidato:  5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu3.2
  Tabla de versión:
 *** 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu3.2 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/restricted i386
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/restricted i386 Packages

I compiled the latest upstream version (5.100.82.112 /
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php) and the speed improvement
was noticeable (more than 300%).

Could 5.100.82.112 be pushed to natty?

[Bug 521175] Re: Plymouth AND Automatic Login enabled system freezes

2010-02-15 Thread hexion
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 518352 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/518352

Wow, I'm nobody to teach anyone lessons but... ok, let's analyze this
closure you just did:

- You didn't wait for the user that reported the issue to confirm whether
adding 'splash' solves the problem.
- You didn't even ask the rest of the people (that have confirmed the issue) if
they have that option disabled too.
- You didn't wait not even 30 minutes to let anyone reply before you closed as
duplicate. Confirmation, hello?
- The descriptions in both bugs don't even match. Nothing there related to
autologin just to put a minor example.

Now just think for a second the amount of time these testers (specially
vmc) have spent in giving you shitloads of information for you to
incorrectly close this in 2 minutes for a minor suspicion of similarity
with another bug (which fails to make complete sense in my humble
opinion).

And that's with a good tester that's punctually giving you all the
information you request (i.e. if he/she is now annoyed for your lack of
attention, you might have lost one of the few good testers in da house).

This was affecting my system too.

/dev/sdb was the descriptor for a external drive that's no longer

My /boot/grub/device.map looked like this:

(hd1) /dev/sdb

I removed the second line and the problem disappeared.

Using intrepid updated at 09 August.
I can't see no errors at all. The image just goes blank and won't show even
changing to another TTY.
The system seems to work, can hear gnome's login sound.

Booting up with splash shows the splash but then the image goes blank when
changing resolution after boot up process.
Booting up without splash won't show any image even during boot up process.

Using hardy's kernel works perfectly (2.6.24-20)

[Bug 194645] Re: keyboard layout switching combination does not get saved

2008-07-01 Thread hexion
This bug is present in Ubuntu Hardy.

Steps:

- Install hardy out of the box (not modifying xorg.conf)
- System-Preferences-Keyboard
- There, add 2 layouts. I.e., the spanish one and the UK one.
- Set a combination to change the layout, for examble, scroll button

It will work as expected.

- Reboot and try again.

It doesn't work, pressing that button won't change the layout.

- Go again to System-Preferences-Keyboard and disable/reenable the button
for swifting the layout. Then close the config application.
- Try again, now it works ok (until next reboot).

[Bug 57707] Re: System crashes totally many times when acceding to vfat partitions

2007-12-03 Thread hexion
My problems with these kind of freezes went lower until almost
dissapear, but were still there with edgy, feisty, and now with gutsy.

I read some info in a webpage, and tried one last thing:
sudo tune2fs -e continue /dev/MYEXT3PARTITION

The reason is that I think I can have random little issues with my
hardware (I don't know if with my HDD or the adapter), and by default if
the kernel finds anything bad it's set to panic itself. That option sets
the partition to not panic the kernel.

Till now, I haven't experimented any other freeze from then.

[Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login)

2007-10-08 Thread hexion
Hi there...

I don't know if this has been already addressed, but in case not, here
you've got some info:

It's already solved upstream:
http://smspillaz.wordpress.com/2007/10/05/compiz-fusion-community-news-edition-15-for-october-5th-2007-3d-fixed/

The desktop window is no longer set as fullscreen as this can cause
problems with panels

So, I think the changes should be backported (due to the upstream
freeze).

BTW, it has nothing to do with gnome-panel... just compiz.

[Bug 146332] Re: bug-buddy crashes java applications (i.e. eclipse)

2007-09-28 Thread hexion
Hi.
I had to uninstall it today because I need eclipse for my project and it's the
only workaround that works.
Till today I was using up-to-dated gutsy version (2.18.1-2ubuntu1).

As I read, java vm is hiding its bugs by catching their own segfaults. Bug
buddy also catches them and thus make eclipse crash.
So what they did to solve is just catching the applications that don't catch
the signals themselves.

I suffered from crashes many times a day while changing from an opened file to
another (not the bug of libgtk2.0, that was due to the tooltips).
After uninstalling bug-buddy there's no more crashes (till now).

If I can help in any other way, make me know.
Regards.

[Bug 136598] Re: xserver-xgl on gutsy doesn't work

2007-09-01 Thread hexion
I can confirm this bug.
Everything was running well till I upgraded xserver-xgl.

Now, XGL is started but without any acceleration.
From Xorg.0.log:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed
(/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(II) Loading local sub module GLcore
(II) LoadModule: GLcore

So AIGLX is started (it shouldn't). Note, I'm using the same xorg.conf
as in my other partition with Feisty. There, XGL, fglrx, and compiz work
without issues.

I tried to modify my xorg.conf to add AIGLX off.. (I used
Composite 0). Doesn't work yet, but I saw in the logs that AIGLX
wasn't started.

I tried also to downgrade to the previous version... no can do.

[Bug 128232] Re: Eclipse SEGFAULTs in libgtk-x11: gtk_tooltips_set_tip()

2007-08-31 Thread hexion
Vanilla eclipse (3.3 version) doesn't crash here.

It wont work with the default VM (/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java) , so
install another and start eclipse with it:
In example, after installing sun-java6-jdk package:

/opt/eclipse3.3/eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Yes, I know, installing 3rd party packages doesn't help ubuntu's development
process... BUT many of us need eclipse TO WORK, and simply cannot wait another
2 months for this to be fixed.
The other alternative is to install again Feisty and stop testing Gutsy... so
this is less bad

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-29 Thread hexion
Mario, when you've got the workaround, post here the module lirc_gpio.ko
(compiled for 2.6.22-8-generic). I'll write it to /lib/modules/ and try
to load it. If it does, I'll test it with irw command.

If all of that works, then I'll make the final test by undoing the
changes to bttv I did and testing again with irw.

BTW, if you make this work exporting those functions into lirc's source,
I'll take a look at the code. I'm curious about how you will do it :)

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-26 Thread hexion
Is that possible? Lost functions are provided by an external module
(bttv), so if you want to implement those functions inside lirc_gpio, it
should have access to the internal implementation of bttv. And that
would require to export all the variables and functions that those 2
functions use, to be visible by lirc_gpio...

Mmmm... I don't think it's a good idea. It's a lot simplier just adding
that code to those 2 files in the kernel sources, IMHO.

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-26 Thread hexion
I think you didn't understand...

Well, this is a problem with lirc, but it's because linux developers
have dropped some functions from the BTTV module. There's a new API to
be used, but lirc developers haven't change the code to adapt it.

It's unlikely that they fix it before Gutsy is released (and maybe
before Gutsy+1 even), so, in order to fix the problem I added the
dropped functions in the kernel files.

What I wan't is to add these lines in the kernel source, so BTTV module
is built with support for lirc_gpio. So, the package affected is linux-
source, not the headers.

Regards.

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-24 Thread hexion
After reading posts in the mailing list of Lirc, and the bug you filed
in launchpad, I started thinking about how to solve this problem.

Well, I got it Now I'm running Lirc with 2.6.22 kernel using lirc_gpio
module.

I simply added the functions droped in the source code, recompiled some
modules, installed them and recompile Lirc.

Of course this is a temporal fix till Lirc devs adapt the code to the
new API, but it's unlike that that's done before Gutsy is frozen, so
this patch should do the trick.

Note: The files are not patches, they are the source files edited by me.
This is the code I added:

drivers/media/video/bt8xx/bttv.h:
// lirc_gpio support starts

extern wait_queue_head_t* bttv_get_gpio_queue(unsigned int card);
extern int bttv_get_cardinfo(unsigned int card, int *type,
 unsigned int *cardid);

// lirc_gpio support ends

drivers/media/video/bt8xx/bttv-if.c:

// lirc_gpio support starts
EXPORT_SYMBOL(bttv_get_gpio_queue);
EXPORT_SYMBOL(bttv_get_cardinfo);

int bttv_get_cardinfo(unsigned int card, int *type, unsigned *cardid)
{
printk(The bttv_* interface is obsolete and will go away,\n
   please use the new, sysfs based interface instead.\n);
if (card = bttv_num) {
return -1;
}
*type   = bttvs[card].c.type;
*cardid = bttvs[card].cardid;
return 0;
}

wait_queue_head_t* bttv_get_gpio_queue(unsigned int card)
{
struct bttv *btv;

if (card = bttv_num) {
return NULL;
}

btv = bttvs[card];
if (bttvs[card].shutdown) {
return NULL;
}
return btv-gpioq;
}

// lirc_gpio support ends

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-21 Thread hexion
It's still not buildable here.
I followed your instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Feisty
but with no results:
# modprobe lirc_gpio

Also compiling from source don't work. Maybe lirc has to be updated upstream.

[Bug 125384] Re: Lirc GPIO module not buildable on 2.6.22 kernel

2007-07-21 Thread hexion
Sorry, I misunderstood what this patch was for...

After reading some posts in the Lirc mailing list (included yours), I
realized that there's no solution yet since some symbols have been
deleted in the vanilla kernel. I suppose this patch is then to make
lirc_gpio build, it's not intended to make it work :)

Sorry for reopening this bug.

BTW, maybe this info is usefull for you. It's about a bug I filed in
kernel.org regarding the ir_common problem. Devs sent there some usefull
info that Lirc devs should read. I haven't posted it yet in the mailing
list cause I'm too lazy to register by now :)

[Bug 95394] Re: beryl-xgl missing from beryl and beryl-core (feisty)

2007-04-03 Thread hexion
Alex, you can hold a package to avoid upgrading it with aptitude (and
apt-get I suppose)

In example, if you don't want to upgrade beryl, type:
# sudo aptitude hold beryl

Remember, when you want to upgrade it you can unhold it and upgrade OR just
install it:
# sudo aptitude unhold beryl
# sudo aptitude install beryl

To know if there is a newer version, you can check your system's version and
the repo's one with:
$ apt-cache policy beryl

Will I ever be able to understand some MOTU's actions

Well, we don't like the way this package is behaving let's fucking
BREAK it... Yeah, it's broken, we can go to bed proud of the good job

Definition of FIX: Take something that doesn't work (or just works sometimes)
and make it work.
What MOTU does in some cases like this: Take something that WORKS but they
don't like... and just delete it.

[Bug 95394] Re: New beryl packages from Feisty offcial repos. don't work with Ati fglrx driver + Xgl

2007-03-25 Thread hexion
stani, as a workaround you can do this:

- Install a beryl and beryl-core in version 0.2.0~beryl1 (as you did)
$ sudo cp /usr/bin/beryl-xgl /
- Upgrade to the last repository version
- beryl-xgl in missing, so:
$ sudo cp /beryl-xgl /usr/bin

This way, apt-get wont bother with beryl upgrades till next commit and
will work :)

[Bug 91982] xchat-gnome wont start again after setting transparency background

2007-03-13 Thread hexion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

I can't reproduce exactly the steps because I'm unable to open again
xchat.

I was changing the settings. The first one I changed was to set
transparency as background. At that moment, the program crashed.

When I try to open again it won't. Launching it from terminal sends this
output:

$ xchat-gnome
0
The program 'xchat-gnome' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.
  (Details: serial 617 error_code 17 request_code 129 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

 Version:
$ xchat-gnome --version

Running with option --sync results in the same output as above

Yes, I'm using XGL and Beryl with fglrx drivers.

I've changed that key to 0 and also transparency key (above that one) to
0 because it was set to 0.5

Now xchat works. Anyway the bug is still there. If I touch again that
setting it crashes...

Thank you for your workaround :)

[Bug 92039] network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu3 breaks my connection

2007-03-13 Thread hexion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I was running 0.6.4-6ubuntu2 without problems.

After upgrading to the new version, network-admin still detects APs and
let's connect to them but after 3 o 4 seconds the connection is dropped
(I noticed that with a ping to the router).

Both uninstalling network-manager or downgrading to 0.6.4-6ubuntu2
packages solved the problem.

Seems that many people experienced regresions with this version:

M... seems that it's not exactly the same archive :|
And reinstalling doesn't install an archive with your md5sum.
This is SO strange... : /

[Bug 87687] Re: New git snapshot required for xorg 7.2/feisty

2007-03-11 Thread hexion
Mosphet, can you share that package in the forums, like John did for
i386?

It not for me, my system is i386 and I have his package working
(withouth problems, the system is perfectly stable) but as feisty devs
are not very worried about this problem (at least it's what it looks
like), maybe some people needs that package to make their systems work.

2007-03-10 Thread hexion
Sorry, I shouldn't have pointed that it's a problem with the compilation
of the package before I tried to compile it myself.

I'm not a guru of this, it's just an option I thinked of. I'll try to
compile it and post the results...

[Bug 88240] Re: /usr/lib/libX11.a: could not read symbols: Malformed archive

2007-03-10 Thread hexion
I compiled this source package
http://librarian.launchpad.net/6496868/libx11_1.1.1.orig.tar.gz with:
./configure
make
sudo make install

And the problem is still there... so that means the problem is upstream?
What's the solution then? Feisty cannot be lauched with that package because
anybody will be able to compile anything that uses GTK.

We can always downgrade to the previous (working) version..

[Bug 88240] Re: /usr/lib/libX11.a: could not read symbols: Malformed archive

2007-03-10 Thread hexion
In my computer, fails compiling all the apps I've tried to compile,
including: lirc, gaim, mplayer, and audacious.

I've also reinstalled libx11-6, libx11-dev, and libx11-data. Same
results... I compiled libx11 source code, with same result too.

Please, try to compile this version of Lirc, this is the one that fails here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/lirc/lirc-0.8.1.tar.bz2

Also, please, post the size and date of your libX11.a to see if it's the same
as here. Mine is:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19764048 2007-02-22 12:06 /usr/lib/libX11.a

I have a doubt.. if it's a local problem... how can it be? I just dist-
upgraded from Edgy without problems, I didn't do anything strange..

[Bug 88240] Re: /usr/lib/libX11.a: could not read symbols: Malformed archive

2007-03-09 Thread hexion
It's not to insist too much, but I've just had the same problem when
compiling gaim from SVN:

then mv -f .deps/gntgf_la-gntgf.Tpo .deps/gntgf_la-gntgf.Plo; else
rm -f .deps/gntgf_la-gntgf.Tpo; exit 1; fi
/bin/bash ../../libtool --silent --tag=CC --mode=link gcc  -g -g -O2   -o
gntgf.la -rpath /usr/local/lib/gaim -module -avoid-version gntgf_la-gntgf.lo
-Wl,--export-dynamic -pthread -lgobject-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lgthread-2.0
-lrt -lglib-2.0   -L/usr/local/lib -lX11   ../../console/libgnt/libgnt.la -lnsl
-lresolv
/usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/4.1.2/../../../../lib/libX11.a: could not read
symbols: Malformed archive

That's with version 2:1.1.1-1ubuntu1. With 1.0.3-4ubuntu1 no problem.

I post this comment to clarify that this is not a bug with LIRC, but
with the packages libx11-6 and libx11-dev.

[Bug 87687] Re: New git snapshot required for xorg 7.2/feisty

2007-03-08 Thread hexion
I've read all the post and I can't understand some statements...

- We can't take this patch to the repositories.. because it can fail...

Well... NOW it doesn't work at all. So it's better to have something
that can fail (or not) rather than something that does fail

- Changing this, can bring new bugs and it's too late

No, it isn't. There are many (but really many) users with fglrx driver
that are affected by this issue. And there's time to create a team
(call it as you wish) at the forums to test the new packages and file
bugs. Just creating and sticking a thread asking for support will work..
I'm sure, I would help too.

- There's no time to solve this

Better now than tomorrow :P The alternative is giving no support for
XGL at all in Feisty. And that's not an acceptable alternative for many
users. They surely will search for 3rd party repos (is that the security
everybody wants for them?) or simply stay with Edgy till Feisty+1

At least that's what I think.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacious

Audacious has been updated on March 02 to version 1.3.0
It claims to be more stable than previous version, and with more features. The
so-long-waited tray icon support has been implemented too..

Please, add it to the repos before feisty is launched.
