[Bug 1712089] Re: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyUnable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
"Wayland" doesn't appear to care how many bugs they have created with their philosophical decision to not allow actions like "sudo synaptic" starting a graphical application from the command line. [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
I tested http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ Wallpaper badly garbled. Images from ubuntu O.K., but any text sent by ubuntu badly garbled unreadable. Fix in comment #41 works fine. Do note, 14.04 LTS had been running fine until 1/29 update screwed up network, so I re-installed 14.04 Surprise, 14.04 now garbled too. Fix in comment #41 worked fine. It's a bit of a struggle. [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip
My comments on entry #13: gedit 20-intel.conf Copy in the lines starting with Section and ending with EndSection: [code] Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection [/code] save quit sudo cp 20-intel.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d enter your password Check to see if the entry made it into the directory O.K.: cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf Now /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is read once on boot so you have to reboot for it to take effect. What this configuration does is tell X11 to use the method "uxa" an older section of code, since on this pc the newer code "sna" screws up. If this configuration doesn't work for you, then delete the 20-intel.conf entry in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d Now Xenial and Wily install .iso's are a real bear to read on this Lenovo M58p because of the garbled text. [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Comment #36, this is a desk top so the display is hooked to the VGA port. I think there's only one display port on this Lenovo M58p. Interesting, boot with Wily kernel, Background Wallpaper hashed Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails hashed Files Pictures displays same jpg fine command line Gsettings fails screen all brown does not display the desired jpg gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg' Reboot with Utopic kernel Background Wallpaper still hashed Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails fine Wallpaper displays just like Files Pictures gsettings still fails: brown screen instead of the desired jpg with Utopic kernel, Settings Appearance Wallpaper works fine. How come with Wily kernel Files Pictures jpg's display fine but Settings Appearance Wallpapers is hashed? What's the difference in the code to display with Files vs. Settings Appearance? Thanks for looking at the bug. I switch between Mily looking for bugs, and LTS when I can't get something done with Mily because I can't read the screen. [Bug 1492603] Re: Unity buttons off left side of screen with 9/4/2015 update
I typically use 1280 x 720 resolution easier for me to read. That's a resolution where after last week's update the screen is shifted left, black margin on the right, and unity buttons fall off the left. Hide is off. If I change to 1368 x 768 the unity buttons are visible. The monitor will actually support 1920 x 1080 but I'd have to use a magnifying glass. Looks like X doesn't support resolutions it used to for this hardware. Wily Display options in settings: 1920 x 1080 1360 x 768 1280 x 960 1280 x 720 my preferred for readability 1024 x 768 800 x 600 If I shift back to a Wily a month old works with that level kernel. Looks like X + linux has dropped support of 1280 x 720. BTW, at the moment this is 14.04 LTS. Runs great. [Bug 1490543] [NEW] gsettings fails to set wallpaper
Public bug reported: until recent updates, gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg' reset wallpaper to the desired picture. Most of the time Wily boots to a horizontally hashed wallpaper which used to be corrected by doing gsettings once or twice or three times, now I have to go to settings > wallpaper > to set the jpg several times until it clears up. Now gsettings fails, gets the original brown screen. gsettings is broken failing to set the desired wallpaper. [Bug 1406802] Re: Vivid Unity Wallpaper horizontally hashed
I run standard Ubuntu and am not familiar with MATE. A couple years ago I may have tried it briefly in another Linux distro. I forget. Months ago I tried Lubuntu which as I remember didn't have the hashing problem. I think it uses LXDE. There's Kubuntu, Gnome, ... however many variations of Ubuntu.I've tried NEXT a couple of times but it didn't do much so I don't know if it has the problem. Now there's Snappy I' ve no clue what desktop it has or just command line?. I use out of the box Ubuntu U+1 looking for bugs that would be applicable to the most (?) users. Unity has had lots of bugsincluding this one.. How is MATE installed? Can I switch between Mate and Unity desktops or do I do an install? How is MATE removed after testing it? example re-installing standard Ubuntu or just starting Unity? Thanks. BTW, my impression this bug is closely tied to xserver or to how Ubuntu Unity is using xserver. I have other pc's with different hardware and different video chips that don't exhibit this problem. This Lenovo M58p has an Intel 64 bit dual processor 3 GHz and is the fastest of my pc's. All is not great with 15.10 on the other pc's example an Intel 32 bit 3 GHz Compaq which has annoyingly slow video with 15.05 and 15.10 but 14.04 video is quite usable. [Bug 1406802] Re: Vivid Unity Wallpaper horizontally hashed
Wily 15.10 is much better than 15.04. About half the time Wily comes up O.K., if not maybe one set wallpape fixes it. There've been Wily xserver updates to xserver - one of the xserver updates made hashing wallpaper worse, next update now much better than 15.04. Of course 14.10 and preceding levels of Ubuntu are fine. I've seen mention of a BIOS update perhaps could affect this, perhaps not. If the update process screws up I've got a dead computer. [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Bios update is in 1404247 - if it screws up I've got a dead computer. 1410 and before run just fine. November and before 1504 ran fine. Win7 just fine. (Well, pretty slow it's Microsoft) 1504 December and on to now pretty bad. I have to set wallpaper multiple times. Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks.
