[Bug 1496136] Re: Software-center fatal design flaw
Insulting someone who took time out of their 7 day work week consisting of 10-14 hour days is always great fun and dramatically improves the quality of final product. (Yes, that is why it took so long to respond.) Your retort made five critical mistakes though. 1) Assumed because something was posted on-line it was bug free. 2) Assumed it wasn't looked at. 3) Did not actually read & follow the bug report steps. 4) Conducted an invalid test. 5) Assumed "offline" was the same as "no network." The design is critically flawed. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#standalone-package If one of your repositories contains a package with the same name but a higher version number, there should be an extra bar below the installation state bar, with text of the form ‘Ubuntu has a newer version.’ (without quotes) or ‘“Other Repository Label” has a newer version.’ (with quotes). Activating the adjacent “Newer Version” button should navigate to the software item screen for the newer version. The instructions for the bug report specifically stated to test in a VM which was created with the network device box unchecked so no network device was available. Network calls made while there is a valid network device but no current network connection behave as expected. Network calls made when there is physically no network device or drivers loaded throw exceptions and/or fail unpredictably. No where in the design does it say how to behave when no network device has been installed on the machine. Because it wasn't in the spec, TDD against the spec would never test it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1496136 Title: Software-center fatal design flaw To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/1496136/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1496136] [NEW] Software-center fatal design flaw
Public bug reported: I know this bug will simply rot until support for the product is dropped, like 98.5% of all Linux bug reports, but __please__ don't let a 12 year old design the next software installation tool. Fatal Flaw: Choose a machine which has no network connection (or create a VM which has no network connection) Install ubuntu, any version where software-center is default. Insert a thumb drive with a .deb on it and do what you have to so contents of thumb drive are displayed. Double click your .deb (doesn't matter which one) Notice the "install" button remains greyed/grayed out. I have a .deb which has zero external dependencies. It installs and runs on Ubuntu 12, 14, and 15 both 32 & 64-bit flavors. It is an application which was written for machines which have no network connection. The install button should only be greyed out if the package provides a dependency list. Truthfully it should never be greyed out. It should allow a user to attempt installation, then error out if dependencies cannot be satisfied. Self contained kiosk type applications (a growing use of Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular) cannot be installed by mere mortals unfamiliar with terminal hacks and unwilling to perform them. [Bug 1051745] [NEW] 12.04 LTS completely broke LS-120 support
Public bug reported: I don't know exactly which round of updates broke this, but now my LS-120 won't mount _any_ backup media I have for it. I even installed a brand new factory sealed drive. Works fine when booting Windows XP or DOS. Boot Ubuntu, insert the same super floppy and it just sits there clicking. Never fails, never returns, never allows eject. I even physically unhooked my floppy drive in case Ubuntu was getting confused. No dice. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1051745 Title: 12.04 LTS completely broke LS-120 support To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1051745/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 719013] Re: Unable to high level format LS-120 Super Floppy
After the last round of updates, the LS-120 refused to mount any media. [Bug 719013] Re: Unable to high level format LS-120 Super Floppy
Your bug is much more deeply rooted. I just booted MS-DOS 7.1 this morning. Under it I can both read my floppy drive A and format my LS-120 drive D. When I boot Ubuntu I cannot do even one thing with the floppy. It shows up in the folder manager but you can click on it all you want, nothing happens. I can insert a super floppy into my LS-120 and have it eventually appear in the left column, double click on it, and open it. This status should NOT be incomplete. I have provided ALL information. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/719013 Title: Unable to high level format LS-120 Super Floppy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/719013/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 719013] Re: Unable to high level format LS-120 Super Floppy
What happens when you execute the following at a terminal: sudo superformat -v 3 -B /dev/fd0 HD My floppy drive lights up NOT my LS-120. Acutally I have. Per your request: Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? I told you I have no ability to put another OS on this machine nor do I have limitless download from my ISP. Having had Fedora on here once a year ago I'm certainly not going to install it. Aparently I'm not making myself clear. I have a FLOPPY DRIVE hooked up to a floppy cable. My LS-120 is hooked up to IDE. My hard drive and DVD are SATA. Per your earlier statment: the kernel seems to have recognized the floppy drive, and in turn, your drive was mounted at /dev/fd0 that seems to be the rabbit hole we are going down. fd0 is NOT my ls-120, it is an actual floppy drive. It appears in the folder manager but is completely disfunctional from there. The LS-120 only appears there when it actually has a disk inserted.

[Bug 1004992] Re: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (floppy spins but never mounts)
Sebastien, Yes, the problem is specific to floppies. You know, another part of the Linux world maintained by Apple removed support for parallel ports because they believed in their infinite wisdom that parallel ports didn't exist any more, despite the fact MicrCenter had 30 different motherboards listed as in-stock on that very day which had PP. Your view of the floppy is just as well informed. Despite what you believe the floppy, and more notably the Super Floppy is still in wide use by professional writers who happen to make up a large section of the Linux community. I haven't had a chance to test with external CDR yet, but I believe it is all USB removable media drives. Most likely broken when they fixed thumb drive support. Jan, I assure you there was a floppy in the drive. I removed and replaced it many times. Computer did not mount. Rebooted to Windows worsta and was able to copy the files from that same floppy still in that same drive. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1004992 Title: Does not detect hotplugged storage device (floppy spins but never mounts) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/1004992/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 496435] Re: upgrades of the grub-pc package can overwrite wrong MBR
Leo: Exactly how many user level people will understand a disk ordering other than what they see in their BIOS boot display, assuming they actually watch that display? If a user has only one disk, or had no two disks the same size, they might be able to figure out that BIOS disk 0 is /dev/sdc to grub, but, if they have two or more disks of the same size (common with machines having 250G and 1TB disks for some reason) they cannot identify which one _should_ really boot because grub tosses 3 coins and counts the number of heads at each boot when it chooses which like sized device goes first. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496435 Title: upgrades of the grub-pc package can overwrite wrong MBR -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 496435] Re: upgrades of the grub-pc package can overwrite wrong MBR
Colin: BIOS ordering is NOT a Red Herring. I'm not abusing you, I'm attempting to educate you since there appears to be a shocking amount of ignorance on the issue. FeeDOS, Windows, OpenDOS, PC DOS 2000, and OS/2 all do BIOS ordering and do it correctly. When your user base has a second OS installed, what are the odds it is on this list? Better question. Why does the grup in OpenSUSE 11.4 respect BIOS ordering and the one with Ubuntu does not? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496435 Title: upgrades of the grub-pc package can overwrite wrong MBR -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 496435] Re: upgrades of the grub-pc package can overwrite wrong MBR
The thing which is needed is agreement with the BIOS because ONLY THAT CAN PROVIDE CONSISTENCY WITH THE OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS. They ALL respect the BIOS, even the boot order changes done in PROM or at boot time via a hot key. Claiming BIOS ordering is irrelevant is simply demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge regarding the booting of every other PC based OS. If you could actually learn about BIOS ordering you wouldn't need further conversation on this issue because you would actually FIX the problem. By ignoring the BIOS drive ordering, if you magically happen to cobble together something which gets the boot drive and partition correct (so far, not a big worry), you reek havoc on the other operating systems. Most people who run multiple operating systems keep spare FAT-16 and/or FAT-32 partitions around lying around for data transfer. These partitions typically appear before their removable devices and appear in a BIOS predictable order. When you try to magic-magic behind the scenes, this changes the drive mapping order and their boot scripts, which worked perfect prior to the installation of Ubuntu-grub, no longer work. It is obviously not impossible to honor the BIOS mapping at boot time since it appears the boys and girls working on OpenSuSE 11.4 managed to do it. FreeDOS boots and works like it should. The FAT-32 transfer partitions all are mapped correctly, and yes, my BIOS selects the drive it boots from.

I had to abandon Ubuntu for OpenSuSE 11.4 which doesn't have this issue. The root of the problem is that Ubuntu DOES NOT RESPECT BIOS ORDERING but just about everything else does. What Ubuntu appears to do is quite stupid, it appears to ASS-U-ME that your largest drive is your boot drive, rather than a data drive. When it encounters two or more largest drives of the same size, it appears to toss three coins and count the number of heads which came up, choosing that number as the current boot disk. grub currently only works on a single disk machine. This is an education issue with the support team, nothing more. This is a bug tracker for software. If you have questions about how to package applications for Debian/Ubuntu, you can find a number of people who can help you in the #ubuntu-motu IRC channel on Freenode IRC. I should note that I also offered a solution at the end of comment #7 for the bug in your packaging. and this is a bug brought on mostly because people think it will look good to have package a maintaner on their resume as long as they only have to produce Microsoft quality work. It compiled one time, the first screen came up, ship it. I have provided you the if statement which needs to be in Debian rules. You need to replicate that once for each -qt-sql-database configuration switch. That's it. If you really think you will be able to continue this level of non- support now that ubuntu is adoption Qt instead of Gtk+ for it's standard development library, you have another thing coming. The bulk of those applications Ubuntu wants to bring in require reliable single database compilation, mostly SQLite, but many require compile in/embedded mysql. You offered an unreliable hack. I offered you the actual code. ifeq (-qt-sql-sqlite , $(findstring -qt-sql-sqlite , $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-sqlite.install fi ifeq (-qt-sql-mysql, $(findstring -qt-sql-mysql, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-mysql.install fi ifeq (-qt-sql-odbc, $(findstring -qt-sql-odbc, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-odbc.install fi ifeq (-qt-sql-psql, $(findstring -qt-sql-psql, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-psql.install fi ifeq (-qt-sql-tds, $(findstring -qt-sql-tds, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-tds.install fi ifeq (-qt-sql-sqlite2, $(findstring -qt-sql-sqlite2, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-sqlite2.install fi And don't forget the at the end of sqlite or you can get a false match with sqlite2 thanks to that backward compatibility issue. -- Roland Hughes, President Logikal Solutions (630)-205-1593 http://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com http://www.infiniteexposure.net No U.S. troops have ever lost their lives defending our ethanol reserves. If you have questions about how to package applications for Debian/Ubuntu, you can find a number of people who can help you in the #ubuntu-motu IRC channel on Freenode IRC. I should note that I also offered a solution at the end of comment #7 for the bug in your packaging. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to qt4-x11 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731504 Title: Qt will not static compile SQLIte -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 731504] [NEW] Qt will not static compile SQLIte

[Bug 731504] Re: Qt will not static compile SQLIte
Well, I followed the instructions posted EXPLICITLY and I can tell you that the various *.install things were not mentioned in any way shape or form for modification. So this is a bug. You EITHER fix the *.install packages to be CONFIG aware (as they should be) OR you fix the documentation. It's still a bug. ** Changed in: qt4-x11 (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to qt4-x11 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731504 Title: Qt will not static compile SQLIte -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 731504] Re: Qt will not static compile SQLIte
.install files are meant to be a static manifest of the files resulting from a build. A mechanism doesn't exist in the Debian packaging system to make the .install files aware of configuration. that statement is quite honestly pure ka-ka. In debian/rules on or about listing line 144 you (whoever you is) ./config.status which happens to contain whatever was passed to configure. #!/bin/sh if [ $# -gt 0 ]; then LDFLAGS='-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions' CXXFLAGS='-g -O2' CFLAGS='-g -O2' /save_sets/rebuild/qt4-x11-4.7.0/configure -confirm-license -prefix /usr -bindir /usr/bin -libdir /usr/lib -docdir /usr/share/qt4/doc -headerdir /usr/include/qt4 -datadir /usr/share/qt4 -plugindir /usr/lib/qt4/plugins -importdir /usr/lib/qt4/imports -translationdir /usr/share/qt4/translations -sysconfdir /etc/xdg -demosdir /usr/lib/qt4/demos -examplesdir /usr/lib/qt4/examples -opensource -fast -plugin-sql-mysql -plugin-sql-odbc -plugin-sql-psql -qt-sql-sqlite -plugin-sql-sqlite2 -plugin-sql-tds -system-sqlite -xmlpatterns -no-multimedia -audio-backend -no-phonon -no-phonon-backend -svg -no-webkit -script -scripttools -platform linux-g++-64 -system-zlib -qt-gif -system-libtiff -system-libpng -system-libjpeg -no-rpath -optimized-qmake -dbus -no-separate-debug-info -verbose -gtkstyle -system-nas-sound -lfontconfig -I/usr/include/freetype2 -qvfb -plugin-sql-ibase $@ else LDFLAGS='-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions' CXXFLAGS='-g -O2' CFLAGS='-g -O2' /save_sets/rebuild/qt4-x11-4.7.0/configure -confirm-license -prefix /usr -bindir /usr/bin -libdir /usr/lib -docdir /usr/share/qt4/doc -headerdir /usr/include/qt4 -datadir /usr/share/qt4 -plugindir /usr/lib/qt4/plugins -importdir /usr/lib/qt4/imports -translationdir /usr/share/qt4/translations -sysconfdir /etc/xdg -demosdir /usr/lib/qt4/demos -examplesdir /usr/lib/qt4/examples -opensource -fast -plugin-sql-mysql -plugin-sql-odbc -plugin-sql-psql -qt-sql-sqlite -plugin-sql-sqlite2 -plugin-sql-tds -system-sqlite -xmlpatterns -no-multimedia -audio-backend -no-phonon -no-phonon-backend -svg -no-webkit -script -scripttools -platform linux-g++-64 -system-zlib -qt-gif -system-libtiff -system-libpng -system-libjpeg -no-rpath -optimized-qmake -dbus -no-separate-debug-info -verbose -gtkstyle -system-nas-sound -lfontconfig -I/usr/include/freetype2 -qvfb -plugin-sql-ibase fi at listing line 27 we find: ibase_architectures := i386 kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64 knetbsd-i386 netbsd-i386 amd64 sparc powerpc #ibase_architectures := none ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_ARCH),$(findstring $(DEB_HOST_ARCH), $(ibase_architectures))) extra_configure_opts += -plugin-sql-ibase else extra_configure_opts += -no-sql-ibase endif so we know that regular if statements work in this rules file. This means that at any point _after_ line 221: override_dh_auto_install: ifeq (-qt-sql-sqlite, $(findstring -qt-sql-sqlite, $(LDFLAGS))) rm debian/libqt4-sql-sqlite.install fi perhaps you just want to echo an empty file instead of the one liner that is there. I don't code script often so syntax could be off a bit, but, there are only a handful of config qualifiers which convert a plugin to a static object and there is no reason the debian rules file cannot automagically fix that since it defines the config. -- Roland Hughes, President Logikal Solutions (630)-205-1593 http://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com http://www.infiniteexposure.net No U.S. troops have ever lost their lives defending our ethanol reserves. [Bug 731504] Re: Qt will not static compile SQLIte
This is a maintainer issue. RTFM. There is an extremely limited number of configuration switches which change the number of files created. Re: [Bug 731504] Re: Qt will not static compile SQLIte
There are only a handful of options which change the actual number of files created. These are well documented. There is no need for you to forsee only to RTFM. -- Roland Hughes, President Logikal Solutions (630)-205-1593 http://www.theminimumyouneedtoknow.com http://www.infiniteexposure.net No U.S. troops have ever lost their lives defending our ethanol reserves. Once you customize a package, making sure it builds is entirely in your hands. If you want to make modifications to how things you are compiled during a package build, you could do fancy things in debian/rules. Go right ahead, but it's not our bug if your modifications don't build. On solving your particular issue, if you're compiling SQLite statically and not building the plugin, you probably just need to disable the SQLite plugin package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731504 Title: Qt will not static compile SQLIte -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
