[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568779] Re: [i855] 10.04 rc boots into black/blank screen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 541511 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 A couple of days ago I took the plunge. I upgraded the ubuntu system, that I used since 8.04LTS first came out, to 10.04.1LTS. BIG mistake. The two huting issues for my Dell Latitude D400 were: 1. The wireless network didn't cooperate until I installed some restricted package available on the Live CD. 2. The Intel 82852/855 GM/GME doesn't work unless I went ahead and used VESA with 8-bit depth. Bad news. Does anyone have a SIMPLE workaround for the GRAPHICS issue so that my resolution experience improves to 24-bit depth? There are other problems, but I'll leave those out of the picture ;-) for now! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607071] Re: X server segfaults when using XTest
Could this be related to a problem I'm having with the command xte in 10.04? This works prefectly in 9.04 and 9.10 but just does nothing at all in 10.04. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429102] Re: [i945gm] Huge font size in KDE and GDM. Makes KDE unusable 8.04-9.10.
Updating the description to make it more clear. ** Tags added: hardy jaunty ** Description changed: Using 09.10 alpha 6 LiveCD on a Medion MD 97900. Display makes 2 entries in lspci : Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics After Kubuntu started to initialize normally, the desktop shows two otherwise blank windows and a taskbar overlayed with fragments of extra huge characters. If some clicking is made to start something, the desktop changes to thin stripes. The system finally dies, not responding to any click. Ctrl-Alt-F2 and I extracted the attached logs. Strangely enough, there seems to be no problem with Ubuntu (Gnome) LiveCD. Update : Please note that this laptop isn't mine and that I'll be away on october 3rd for 15 days. When Kubuntu-desktop is installed on top of (G)Ubuntu, the said problem occurs not only while a KDE session runs but as soon as the Display Manager starts (which the kid blindly worked through anyway). This is probably because KDE stomps on Gnome instead of gently sitting next. Update #2: Problem is a font size. Title updated. Problem appears in GDM too and in all 8.04-9.10 releases. - Side story : - As there is an apparently 2 years-old problem with iwl3945 not enabling the WiFi controller when the button is pressed, preventing any use of the WiFi, and not counting the issues in more entries for iwl3945 ... - ... the kid I'm striving to help, or try to, wants to use Windows, or Suse if the WiFi's fixed. - Update: - This WiFi problem was worked around with a BIOS WiFi always-on setting, but that's obviously not the correct solution and someone should care about getting that button problem fixed. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu development version, this would help us a lot. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570879] Re: OpenGL graphic errors in google earth
Hmmm... ok - somehow i can't reproduce the working state with nomodeset any more now, after hibernating ... of course i forgot the add the command line to the kernel when it booted, but of course it is now nevertheless in effect again (after switching to the old ram state image...) so googleearth i think worked _once_ with full 3d support after a clean nomodeset boot ... but i couldn't put my signature on it any more now. just before, it allways complained about not beeing started in DirectX mode and asked to switch to DirectX, which i affirmed, but then it was somehow still in compatibility graphics mode and running quiet slow (earth rotation) after unchecking compatibility mode in graphics options and restarting a few times, now when i start it the _whole_ application is unuseable slow. (i.e. even the menus react only with a 10s delay) i realize direct rendering whatever it really means these days is somehow only halfway enabled ... the (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0 line from the xorg.0.log, which i pasted in comment 37 has diappeared from the log and instead (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable is there now. /usr/bin/glxinfo from the mesa-utils package reports direct rendering: Yes ONCE ... compiz seems to be working with it but googleearth not... (so compiz works with dri1 as well but googleearth (wine?) requires dri2, which is buggy ???) ja... i don't know.. but hopefully somebody can shed some light on this and/or make use these infos ... -- OpenGL graphic errors in google earth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570879 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570879] Re: OpenGL graphic errors in google earth
wow - unexpected things happening here after hibernating again and this time putting the nomodeset boot option on the kernel command line again googleearth is working again... the earth are in the application it's flickering a little bit when i move it over or hide it below other windows but that's no problem at all. when it's minimized the flickering stops and i can use other ass on the same desktop. when it's in the foreground and not mooved the application behaves as expected - works like a charm (tm) - the earth is spinning at enormous speed :-) glxinfo reports still the same, xorg.0.log is has not changed, nothing has changed except the graphics card initialization, i guess but how can googleearth be possibly finding this out ? the googleearth was not started in 'DirectX' mode message doesn't appear any more. (so now compiz works with dri1 as well but googleearth (wine?) requires that the graphics card initialisation is not messed with when using dri1 and doesn't work with dri2 - or something like that ... :-)) -- OpenGL graphic errors in google earth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570879 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 620278] Re: random Xorg crash
Hello, So, here is my report - not exactly the one we assumed : however : last friday evening, reading briefly the doc, I understood that attaching gdb to X was dead simple, so I tried - and X froze - completely - it was late, thus I dropped it, and resumed the debug session now. It kept freezing. meanwhile, looking closely to the situation, I noticed that the doc mentions attaching to /usr/bin/Xorg; however, on my Ubuntu 10.04 (I have two desktops at home, one x86_64 and one i686), ps -ef|grep X shows /usr/bin/X running, not /usr/bin/Xorg; I verified more closely : /usr/bin/X is brought by xserver-xorg, which claims : This package depends on the full suite of the server and drivers for the X.Org X server. It does not provide the actual server itself. Really ? whereas /usr/bin/Xorg is brought by xserver-xorg-core : and we have xserver-xorg-core-dbg, but no xserver-xorg-dbg, which can explain why, before freezing X, gdb claimed it found no symbols when attaching to X ... comparing X and Xorg : -rwsr-sr-x 1 root root10,520 2010-04-09 04:07 /usr/bin/X -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1,901,280 2010-07-21 15:08 /usr/bin/Xorg two completely different executables : one with the sticky bit set, and so tiny ! This situation looks messy : don't you think ? I just connected through VPN at work : on CentOS 5.5, it's definitely /usr/bin/Xorg - which seems consistent with today's fashion (I am an old timer, remember ? I knew X11R6 on HP-UX and SunOS, not to mention Solaris) just to give it a try, in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, I replaced ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X with ServerCmd=/usr/bin/Xorg and restartedkdm ** Attachment added: output from : gdb /usr/bin/X 21 | tee gdb-X https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/620278/+attachment/1511275/+files/gdb-X -- random Xorg crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620278 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 620278] Re: random Xorg crash
(continuation) Oh I am sorry ! I assumed I could attach a file independently from the edit session ! apparently not ;-) so, now, kdm started Xorg and not X (as it should be ? you tell me !) I did not had any further luck with gdb : attaching it to Xorg, my screen froze as well - I guess I am giving some work to somebody here ... anyway : you may compare the two gdb logs I attached : let me be accurate : X froze when I pressed Enter at the end of the attach line in both cases; then I connected from my i686 desktop, killed gdb, and fortunately this released X/Xorg; it's interesting to see that with Xorg, many (but the normal ones) .so are loaded; and with X, /lib64/ld- linux-x86-64.so.2 only is loaded. To my humble point of vue, Xorg seems to be the healthy one ? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433699] [NEW] Failed to set gfx for Geode on Jaunty (fresh install on Fit-PC 1)
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This is related to my previous enthusiasm mentioned in bug 214119, in which I found a workaround to make gfx (AMD Geode) for the Fit-PC 1 (fit-pc.com) work on Hardy. This does not work with fresh install on Jaunty, which I performed twice just the other day on the exact same unit as I did Hardy. Boot halts, grey prompt saying ' (EE)Geode(0): GPIO pins are in serial mode. Assuming no DDC ' Next grey prompt offers to 'Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session only' + a 'Review logs' and 'Edit configuration'. I go with the first option: 'It appears that the screen number (x.x) is already in use' I can then get a 800x600 res. Someone know a fix? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 622420] [NEW] Unpluging external screen, in a dual screen setup, causes X to lock up
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I have a ThinkPad X201 with Arrandale graphics. When I plug in an external screen via the docking station DisplayPort or directly to the laptop (undocked) via the VGA port, I can manage my dual screen with no issues at all with one exception. If I either unplug the external screen or if I go to gnome-display-properties tool and turn off the laptop screen. If I do that, the laptop screen goes black and flickers (looks like X is trying to recover or something) but nothing happens. After 20 or so seconds, the system locks up completely. Please note that this was happening since Alpha 2 of Maverick but I chose to wait thinking the latest Xorg release will fix this. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554839] Re: Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings
Not sure if it helps to debug this bug but I had same issue with Debian Squeeze where two buttons reseted xset settings: Fn+Down and Fn+Up (lcd brightness). I solved it by disabling HAL in debian, however as far as I know Ubuntu 10.04 should not use HAL any more. However one side-note, after HAL disable, xev start showing different keycode in some reason. So in my case with HAL I was using xset -r 236, after (without HAL) it was xset -r 237. -- Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554839 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 620581] Re: Reduced screen resolution choices after update
Oops - misunderstanding ... The problem appeared - possibly as a result of a recent update. It affected the output from xrandr, and that, or some other effect of the problem meant I had an effectively unusable system. I have seen the same effect before on earlier versions - and had to reinstall to get round it. It is too rare for me to correlate it with version or particular hardware. The problem went away while I was investigating it - there was no update to make it go away; I think something I did cleared something. But since I cannot identify either something it doesn't help anybody much. But nor does a misunderstanding. My var/log/apt record shows the Xorg update that triggered the problem (dated 18 Aug) and the absence of any update since. I suspect something in the update caused my problem. ** Attachment added: var-log-apt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/620581/+attachment/1511737/+files/var-log-apt.tar.gz ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Incomplete -- Reduced screen resolution choices after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855gm] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
On Dell Latitude D400 laptop, with 1GB RAM. Initiated an upgrade, from 8.04lts to 10.04.1lts, a few days ago. Uses the Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics controller. After the upgrade was completed: At the end of the boot process, while the X-server is started, I get a blank screen and everything freezes. To alleviate the problem I switched from using the Intel driver to the vesa driver (8-bit depth) by modifying the xorg.conf file and rebooting. That allows me to boot fine, but the graphics experience isn't pretty. To alleviate the graphics problem I reinstalled the Intel drivers from the PPA. I used the following overview page: https://edge.launchpad.net/~raof/+archive/aubergine The reinstallation of the Intel driver made NO difference to the situation. -- [i855gm] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605414] Re: Nouveau in Ubuntu does not work on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M
Bah! According to those logs everything appears to be working fine. They do indicate that you've got an external monitor plugged in to what the card believes is an HDMI port, though. Do you have an external monitor plugged in? If so, could you try booting without it plugged in? If not, this could well be a part of the problem. Secondly, it looks like vga16fb is loading for you; that has, in the past, interacted badly with nouveau. We've made some kernel changes that should prevent vga16fb from loading. If you test a more recent LiveCD you might find that this is fixed. -- Nouveau in Ubuntu does not work on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605414 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 622484] [NEW] [RV250] Screen artifacts on X (vertical green bars)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati Ubuntu release: 10.04.1 LTS Package version: 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu5 Before Lucid Lynx I was affected by Bug #413259 and Bug #444139, since Lucid my graphic card is working quite perfectly. But sometimes (maybe every day - when I work for some hours - once), I get screen artifacts - vertical green bars in one application-window (please just look at the attached screenshots). I tried to find out how to reproduce this bug for some months now - but I still can't tell. I saw those green bars in Evolution and Firefox, but these are also the applications I use most (so I can't tell for sure that other applications aren't affected). The sreen artifacts stay if I just move the cursor but mostly dissapear when I open another window - so it wasn't easy to get a screenshot... I suppose these screen artifacts dissapear when the affected window gets redrawn.
