[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 770685] [NEW] there is no optimus support in linux
Public bug reported: Over a year after its release, there is still no Optimus support in Linux, either in nvidia-current or in the nouveau driver. Unless there is a BIOS setting that allows you to turn off the Intel iGPU, the only workaround is to use the Intel iGPU and, if possible, save power by turning off the nvidia card via an ACPI call. It appears that in most cases, to cut costs, the manufacturers don't supply the hardware MUX that allows you to select nvidia graphics, so there is no such BIOS option. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1657660 has a summary of the issue. Apart from being a great annoyance to people who buy a laptop with an nvidia card and discovering it just doesn't work in Linux, this is a big problem because other basic functions like running an external monitor via HDMI will most likely not work (eg see https://lists.launchpad.net /hybrid-graphics-linux/msg00701.html - HDMI is attached via the non- working nvidia card). I don't mind so much about only being able to use the Intel graphics (even despite the driver being less stable than nvidia-current), but not being able to connect an external monitor is a show-stopper for me. Last year it was possible to get a laptop with an i7-series CPU and a working nvidia card, because it the i7 CPU last year didn't have an iGPU. But Sandy Bridge CPUs all come with internal graphics and are now the norm (and if you are buying a performance laptop, why wouldn't you want a SB CPU?), so it is almost impossible now to buy a performance laptop with a working nvidia card (ie working HDMI). Will this slow the future uptake of Ubuntu? I would suspect that it must do at least for users who have performance laptops, since Ubuntu now can't drive external monitors on a reasonably large portion of new laptops. Will people stop using Ubuntu on performance laptops because of this? By the same logic, there must be current Ubuntu users who will be forced to use Windoze just so they can get external monitors working. (Sadly, it looks like I might fall into this category when my company upgrades its laptops soon.) nvidia has stated that they have no plans to support optimus on Linux, but that one day they might have to. Is there a way to give them an incentive to do so, other than by moaning on the nvidia forums (eg http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=144750). I will check the new kernel out. The only difference I could notice that in case of the first login X seems to use tty7 while it's tty8 later (as I've commented already). I had the idea that maybe it's related to my boot problem that no splash, text consoles etc can be seen only some kind of odd bar code like image. Anyway I would be keen to help with bisecting however it can be hard, since the crash sometimes need a hour or so to happen, so I can't be sure exactly (at least not within a sane time) that the given kernel is OK or not. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz
On my setup (Dell 6420 with integrated HD3000; shows as 8086:0126 (rev 09) in lspci; running Debian 2.6.38-2), the bug appears only after a while (so it's hard to reproduce). I tried your new kernel anyway. I got the error just once, after the boot: [ 73.270170] [drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle [waiting on 11744, at 11744], missed IRQ? I will stick with this kernel until the bug happens again (or not ;-)) Just tried neverball for a couple of minutes, it didn't trigger the bug. Note: I don't know if it's relevant, but since I installed this kernel, opening the lid of the laptop will turn the screen to black. The screen remains OK when I close the lid, but when I re-open it, it goes black. It's not off (I still see the backlight), just black. It is then stuck in that state: switching back to textmode won't help. However, if I suspend to RAM and resume, the screen will work again. Before using this kernel, this bug occured exactly 50% of the time (i.e., I could close+open once, and the 2nd time would trigger the bug). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/761065 Title: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty
Of course implementing a setting in gnome-mouse-touchpad would be desirable and I don't understand why they don't. KDE has a nice GUI configuration tab. Anyway, a quick workout in Ubuntu Natty, working in squeeze as well, is to add a tiny script in autostart, working per user: synclient TabButton2=2 synclient TabButton2=2 I seem to recall it has been already mention here and elsewhere. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769650] Re: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME)
You've exceeded your hardware's maximum texture size (2048 x 2048). See LP: #555641 which this is basically a dupe of. Sounds like X switched to software rendering rather than crashing or something equally antisocial, so that's good. The real bug here is that gnome-display-properties apparently doesn't doublecheck the max texture size when compiz is active. It needs to tell the user the consequences of setting the root framebuffer size to be bigger than the max texture size when they try to apply it. ** Package changed: mesa (Ubuntu) = compiz (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/769650 Title: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555641] Re: MASTER: max texture size prevents compiz from running
** Description changed: [Problem] Running compiz with dual-head enabled on certain graphics cards does not work. Compiz either errors out and refuses to run, or else fails with a black screen. Compiz displays the desktop as a 3D texture. The maximum texture size is determined by the hardware capabilities of the particular graphics card. Some older or lower end cards have a limitation of 2048x2048, which means if you set up a side-by-side arrangement, the sum of the horizontal resolutions could exceed 2048. Some example max texture limits: Radeon Xpress 200M: 2048x2048 Radeon X1600/X1900: 4096 x 4096 Radeon HD 2400: 8192 x 8192 Radeon HD 2600/4670/4850/4870: 8192 x 8192 GeForce 7300/7600: 4096 x 4096 Quadro FX 4500: 4096 x 4096 GeForce 8600/880/9400/9600/120/130/285: 8192 x 8192 Quadro FX 4800: 8192 x 8192 + i945: 2048 x 2048 GMA 950: 2048 x 2048 GMA X3100: 2048 x 2048 [Workarounds] A. If monitors are rectangular, arrange them above/below instead of left/right B. Turn off compiz [Original Report] I'm using a Lenovo S10-2 netbook (Intel GMA950 chipset, 1024x600 internal resolution). When I connect a VGA display (Samsung SyncMaster 757NF) and set it to span, both screens go black with only the mouse cursor visible. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 765769] Re: thinkpad t400 keys hang randomly
Hello Fabio, currently I won't have some time to test the new Natty. The problem doesn't occur directly after booting up the system, maybe I would have to work one hour to trigger the error and it doesn't make sense to setup my whole development environment for this time. But if I find some time in the next weeks, I will test it. At least when Natty is released I will see automatically if the bug is fixed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled
The last two comments on this bug are contradictory. Checking powertop with the 2.6.38 kernel for natty versus earlier kernels shows for me that the *type* of kernel interrupt has changed but the number of them has not and has increased if anything. I think this bug is serious and getting worse and requires the attention of a kernel developer. It reflects badly on linux in general if power consumption is increasing markedly while performance is not markedly increasing at the same time (which appears the case on the phoronix benchmarks). To solve this requires someone familiar with the kernel to report it on the kernel bugzilla. There has been some discussion of the issue on lmkl but it looks very inconclusive and low priority to me. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 762768] Re: cannot select text with left click with touchpad
hi, just updated my system. xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.3.99+git20110116ubuntu11 was replaced with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.3.99+git20110116ubuntu12. touchpad - behavior did not change. changing AreaLeftEdge from 0 to 2000 JumpyCursorThreshold from 0 to 50 made it possible to select text. (before I got the context menu) the solution is not very good, because with AreaLeftEdge=2000 left side of touchpad is completely blocked. greetings reinhard -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/762768 Title: cannot select text with left click with touchpad ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
I installed Natty Beta2 this weekend on my HP laptop. I run it with an Acer 22 external monitor. I prefer the big screen (to the left) as primary and the laptop screen (to the right) for email and IM. I only had to edit the ~/.config/monitors.xml to set the VGA screen to primary to get the setup I needed. After some updates this weekend, i can no longer get the external monitor to work with Unity. On bootup I get both screens with the login screen on the laptop. If I choose Unity, the external monitor freaks out like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK5AfUzg6UA Mean while the laptop screen has a freely moving mouse, but not much else. If I go into Ubuntu classic mode, I get Gnome 2 and the resolutions work just fine. When I try Unity again it freaks out. I've tried deleting the ~/.config and restarting. That seemed to have helped..until I restarted. The odd thing is that somehow my left is primary was retained even without the monitor.xml. When the view DOES come up it looks like this... http://www.flickr.com/photos/tubatodd/5657189985/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/737891 Title: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
I am actually unable to run *any* resolution on my external monitor, if I disable my laptop LCD in gnome's monitor configuration utility. This is what I am seeing as well, in bug 767319(which is marked as duplicate, though slightly different than this bug's description). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/767319 This bug is critical for anyone docking a laptop or solely using an external monitor. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/737891 Title: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
All, Note that I've filed bug [1] with updated information. On such bug, Bryce pointed out that a newer kernel should contain patches fixing this issue. After installing the newer kernel in the Ubuntu's daily builds the issue was fixed. Unfortunately, I've been unable to bisect the patches to determine which one is fixing this issue. IS someone has a bit a free time and can help with this, it would be awesome. See more information in [1]. Thank you! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 762768] Re: cannot select text with left click with touchpad
hi, more testing with synclient: setting AreaBottomEdge=4331 which is the same as my BottomEdge= 4331 and JumpyCursorThreshold=150 produces a better result. but still have to place first a finger in the middle of the touchpad and then on the left mouse button area. then i am able to select text! two fingers at the same time produce sometimes scrolling. greetings reinhard -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/762768 Title: cannot select text with left click with touchpad ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
