[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877051] Re: dual monitors not recognized

2011-10-19 Thread krackersk
They worked from the live CD because you were using the open source
Nouveau driver. I couldn't set up the nvidia driver either for dual
monitors but when I did a fresh install without the internet (and hence
no binary drivers), dual monitors worked fine.

Quite a few people are having a problem with nvidia drivers and dual
monitors, check out this thread.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877931] Re: package nvidia-173 173.14.30-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-173 kernel module failed to build

2011-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 576648 ***

This bug is due to the kernel being upgraded to a version that the
Nvidia driver in Ubuntu 11.04 does not support.

You can avoid this bug either by reverting back to the kernel version
2.6.38 that Ubuntu 11.04 is meant to use, or by upgrading to Ubuntu
11.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-19 Thread d3ngar
Yes, when it says 'fix released', I would like some information of when
this fix makes it to the end customer.

I have tried re-installing ATI drivers (as per Max Patzlet) := After re-boot I
don't see anything. Had to re-install fglrxdefault packages
I then tried the AMD drivers 11.9 := Same as above. Nothing loads up and I had
to go into recovery mode and install the drivers I previously purged.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with a Radeon Mobility HD 3600 or something.

Thanks,

Chris

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876179] Re: Nvidia - dual-screen setup almost impossible

2011-10-19 Thread Casper Bang
To add to Nathan's previous description regarding auto-reset, it is
*sometimes* possible to enable/disable multiple monitors without a
reboot, but it requires one to try to perform the change (hitting Apply)
twice. Occasionally the composition manager will crash entirely though,
removing window decorations and generally leaving the UI unresponsive.

Oddly enough, I *was* able to enable TwinView without the above issues,
when using Gnome 3, so the issue must somehow be related to Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-19 Thread Steffen Sindzinski
This only means that the fix is released, not that it is available. So
far you would have to install fglrx from the ATI website manually. This
means download and compile, see wiki for more information. Best is over
an existing fglrx so that all the xorg stuff is right. So you should
have installed version 11.9 before by additional drivers function. Just
uninstall the old fglrx and double click on the new one for installing.
Do the same with the control center. The earlier mentioned way to purge
is not recommended by me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-19 Thread Alexandre Jasmin
Thanks Seth. Installing the deb in comment #492 finally enables touchpad
scrolling on my Asus 1830T. Edge scrolling work fine now.

Two finger scrolling is a bit more difficult. Perhaps I'm just not
familiar with the gesture and the touch pad is so small. I haven't
fiddle with the other settings yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877905] Re: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly

2011-10-19 Thread sybille
I believe I am experiencing the same problem, and it has been reported by
another user on the Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1864567

The symptom is that no GLX application will run.

For example, compiz reports:
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

And, glxinfo reports:
X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib
length error)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
Serial number of failed request: 17
Current serial number in output stream: 17

However, there are no errors reported in my Xorg.0.log, including loading of
GLX:
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_make_current_read
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_swap_control and GLX_MESA_swap_control
(II) AIGLX: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap backed by buffer objects
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0

As reported in the Ubuntu forums thread, the two users there are running
the 2.6.38-12 #51~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP kernel, one with pae and one
generic.

The problem appears with both the intel i915 driver and radeon driver.

Reverting to the prior versions of xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core
does restore GLX functionality, so it seems that the update is causing
the problem.

2011-10-19 Thread d3ngar
Hi Steffen,

I would like to do that, but I'm not completely sure how.

I tried the steps outlined here (
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI?highlight=%28ATI%29
 )

Unfortunately this means that I get NO picture at all... I then have to boot
into recovery mode and reverse all the changes.
I did purge the old packages before though.
I also tried to replace the xorg.conf with the one created during install
(as you say: 'so that all the xorg stuff is right'). This also had no effect
: blank screen!

Thanks,

Chris

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-19 Thread Steffen Sindzinski
For me it works ok. I have got a 5750. Are you sure you installed the
correct preperitary driver of the ATI web site? You probably have the
open source driver running. The version should be 2:8.892 as shown in
synaptics and must be enabled by xorg, means shown active in the
additional drivers dialog. I just had some trouble to install the
compiled drivers by the softwarecenter. Not it is installed and still
cannot find the control center in unity. I have to call it manually.
Dont know why. Maybe it does not work with manually installed
applications. BTW Gnome Shell is still less mature that unity. A lot of
functions is missing. To make it work one has to install a lot of stuff.
Best is the ppa by webup8.org and follow their hints. For me I rather
stay at unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877905] Re: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly

I noticed this bug because immediately after the update desktop effects
stopped working.

The affected system is a Toshiba Portege M700 tablet (Intel i965 video
driver). As with the other people who have reported this bug, reverting
xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core back to the previous versions
corrects this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877820] [NEW] Can't get X running on 27 iMac (Radeon gfx) in 11.10

2011-10-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have tried a clean install of ubuntu amd64 on an 2009 (early 2010?)
imac 27 with ATI/Radeon graphics. Install works fine, but there is no
way I can get X running. A default boot gets some of the way, then
presents a blank screen, which I can't get past (the OS still appears to
be running though) I have tried the nomodeset radeon.modeset=0 kernel
options, but there is no failsafeX in the recovery menu anymore, which
got me through last time. I have tried dropping into a shell to install
the fglrx drivers via jockey-text, but this doesn't seem to work either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878182] [NEW] update to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8_amd64 breaks all opengl support (intel chipset)

2011-10-19 Thread Celsius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 64bits

an update of xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core arrived today that,
once I had restarted my laptop, made compiz crash (and going into
fallback mode) and no other application using opengl was able to run
(e.g. glxgears). compiz-check was failing too.

After some googling, I found several threads related to the crash report
from compiz, and tried some solution. the only one that worked was
forcing xserver-xorg-core version to 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7 (lucid) instead of
the latest 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8 (lucid-updates)

After downgrading, everything works fine again (at least compiz,
glxgears)

The error message from compiz (and compiz --replace) is:

compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877695] Re: Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

2011-10-19 Thread Jeff Lane
** Summary changed:

- [Latitude E6510] Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with
nouveau
+ Desktop does not revert when unplugging external VGA with nouveau

** Description changed:

- Testing the E6510 with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither external
- VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from nvidia_current. I
- have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work with nouveau.
- However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau. BUT the problem
- arises when you unplug the external display.
+ Testing the E6510 (7383) with Oneiric. I have discovered that neither
+ external VGA nor Display port work with the nvidia driver from
+ nvidia_current. I have also discovered that DisplayPort does not work
+ with nouveau. However, External VGA does seem to work with nouveau.
+ BUT the problem arises when you unplug the external display.

I've managed to recreate this every time by doing the following:
  1: Verify you're running nouveau
2: plug in a monitor via external VGA on the 6510.
3: Verify desktop has been extended. I do this simply with CTRL+ALT+Arrow to
open the switcher. When configured for dual desktops, you'll see each quadrant
split into two with a blue bar under the Primary desktop.
  4: Unplug the monitor
5: wait a few seconds and then do CTRL+ALT+Arrow to open the switcher and
notice that the desktops are STILL split into two as though the monitor was
connected.
6: open something that creates secondary popups. Typing ubuntu-bug xorg in a
terminal window does great. You'll notice that while the main apport window
may or may not appear on the visible screen, if you open the switcher again,
you'll notice that popups are appearing on the extended display, and without
the external monitor, there's no way to get to them.

You can further confirm this by plugging the monitor back in and you'll
see the popup once that monitor comes online.

This is a blocker as well because once this happens, the only way to
restore usablility is to reboot. I tried unity --reset and tried simply
logging out and back in to restart X. Both cases resulted in the system
  freezing, necessitating a reboot anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 721453] Re: nvidia-settings should depend on pkg-config and python-gtk

2011-10-19 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
Pau:
Did you by any chance test with just python-gtk2 and not pkg-config?
Python-gtk2 is needed for some Ubuntu-specific stuff, but Debian doesn't
include pkg-config either and developers over there aren't seeing a problem.
Did you bring up pkg-config because of code inspection or because it actually
gave an error about it? There is a fallback in the code for if pkg-config isn't
present.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] [NEW] System unusable after update

2011-10-19 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

I have JUST ran an update. Now, once the system has booted I am
presented with nothing but a blank screen. I cannot change consoles or
do ANYTHING with the machine unless running X in failsafe mode (which I
am doing now).

There were three xserver updates, so I have no idea which one has broken
my system, but one of them has! (apt history should be attached showing
which were updated)

If I can figure out how to roll back an update I will be able to report
which package, so any help appreciated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] Re: System unusable after update

2011-10-19 Thread Eliah Kagan
@Rick
What issue are you referring to specifically? Is there a bug reported for this?
If there is, and the downgrade fixes the problem, then this bug can be marked
as a duplicate of it. Otherwise, a bug describing the problem specifically
should probably be reported, and this could be marked as a duplicate of this
bug.

@Ken Sharp
Since this bug requires more information in order to be worked on by a
developer, including the information that Rick has requested (whether or not
downgrading xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common works around the problem), I
am marking this bug Incomplete. When providing this information, please feel
free to change this bug's status back to New.

Further details... also seen on Thinkpad W510 (6974) running Nouveau...

the desktop can be reverted to single monitor mode by running the
Displays applet... but if you don't know to do that, and expect the
desktop to revert itself, you may never realize the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 878235] Re: System unusable after update

2011-10-19 Thread Eliah Kagan
I have downgraded xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common but the problem
persists.

xserver-xorg-video-intel is the most likely package, of those that have
been upgraded, to have caused this problem. Did you try downgrading
that?

I have also managed to downgrade libimobiledevice2 and libdvdread4 but
all the kerberos stuff is blocked for downgrade by Bug 878263.

That is unlikely to pertain to the video problem that this bug is about.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876711] Re: Screen brightness resets to minmized when screen turns off

2011-10-19 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Bobik-s-

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Next lets try disabling that dell_backlight interface... Please boot
with the kernel boot parameter dell_laptop.backlight=0, verify that
only intel_backlight appears when you check ls /sys/class/backlight,
and then test the idle-timeout, lid-close, and brightness keys behavior
again. Does disabling dell_backlight help?

I' m not absolutely sure but it seems that every patches
(ppa:sergio91pt/synaptics+clickpads, Mohegan #190, ...) send to me a kernel

Does other users of DM1 3130 can confirm ?

2011-10-19 Thread Ghislain Bugnicourt
Hi,
On Ubuntu 11.10, the problem is almost the same.
The only difference is that now Unity 3D works with the vesa driver. Great
thing !
Nevertheless the resolution is still incorrect and the screen is still
unknown.

I'm still forced to use Ubuntu 10.04 ! :)

lock and see the lights on my keyboard react. Usually even these keys
won't work.

Also, some parts of the GUI broke down. For example the sidebar on the
left stopped reacting, as well as the top bar, though I could still open
and move windows, but not close them. This does sound like a X issue
even more.

I attached some logs I captured again right after the crash.

2011-10-19 Thread linrunner
I can confirm this Bug. Desktop effects don't work anymore.

Hardware:
- ThinkPad T60, ATI X1400 with radeon driver
- ThinkPad X200, Intel 4500MHD

Software: Ubuntu 10.04 with all updates, Kernel 2.6.32-34 amd64

The offending package is xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8. After
downgrading to 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6 everything is back to normal.

Regards, Thomas

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877905] Re: After upgrading Xserver video does not work properly

2011-10-19 Thread Jamie Strandboge
** Description changed:

- Once updated the packages Xserver the video does not work properly, and
- games do not open, an error opening the game CounterStrike2D:
+ Regression found in xorg-server in http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1232-1/

- X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal

- Major opcode of failed request: 153 (GLX)
- Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
- Serial number of failed request: 17
- Current serial number in output stream: 17

- If I try to open the Quadrapassel appears the error below:
+ For more information, see the incident report in
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IncidentReports/2011-10-19-xorg-server-security-
+ update-breaks-glx

- The program 'quadrapassel' received an X Window System error.
- This probably reflects a bug in the program.
- The error was 'BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length
erro'.
- (Details: serial 29 error_code 16 request_code 153 minor_code 17)
-   (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
-that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
-To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
-option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
-backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
