[Bug 495361] Re: [Xubuntu] No window manager at startup

2009-12-11 Thread Jerome
My bug description was a bit incorrect. Sorry about that.

I do mean
- no window borders (title, maximize, close,...)
- window top left of screen
- focus when mouse over the window (instead of clicking)

But the panel was there. (The only difference is the virtual desktop
selector showing 2 desktops instead of 4.)

I do select Xfce-session in gdm. (I got two of them, by the way.)

I peeked into ~/.xsession-errors but should have copied it before
rebooting twice, for now it is erased. Anyway I remember it saying the
window manager was already launched. I'll copy it when it happens again.

2009-12-11 Thread Jerome
I did the upgrade more than a month ago and this xfwm4 issue just
happened twice in the last two says.

Besides, I don't think I actually need to remove all those files. The great
majority of them have nothing to do with the issue.
(I suppose it would rather be an rm -r.)

I'll keep it as it is until it happens again so that I can provide the

[Bug 495361] [NEW] [Xubuntu] No window manager at startup

2009-12-10 Thread Jerome
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfwm4

Sometimes (twice for the last 3 or 4 reboots), I get no window manager
at startupt.

By that, I mean
- no window borders (title, maximize, close,...)
- window top left of screen
- focus when mouse over the window (instead of clicking)
- no panel, etc...

I can Alt-F2 to run xfwm4 and everything goes fine. Panels are created,
just as normal.

I run an up to date 9.10 Xubuntu.
xfwm4 version 4.6.1 (revision 29817) for Xfce 4.6.1

I don't see anything relevant in the syslog and other logs.

There is this dodgy line :
WARNING: Could not launch application 'metacity.desktop': Unable to start
application: L'exécution du processus fils « metacity » a échoué (Aucun fichier
ou dossier de ce type)
But is it also there when it works, and anyway, I believe metacity is not xfwm4.

Somehow, I'm kinda glad it is reproducible from times to times : Is
there something I should try ? What information should I provide ?

[Bug 235146] Re: Squeak package missing sound plugins

2009-04-23 Thread Jerome Peace
Hi I posted this to the squeak-dev list
http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2009-April/135757.html
but I was really trying to get it to the attn: of Jordan Mantha.
The email address I had been given for him bounced. So I am repeating the post
here.
If someone can bring it to his attention I would appreciate some response. --Jer

Jerome Peace, bug tracker here.

I recently started using squeak on a Ubuntu system. I am old to squeak
but new to Ubuntu and Linux.

So everything about setting up is new.

Presently loading what Ubuntu offers as a download causes squeak to
operate without sound. The vm-sound-ASLA and vm-sound-OSS plugins do not
come with the offered package. This has been a problem for over a year.

I am pushing to find someone to act on a solution that solves the
problem, not just for myself but for all other naive Ubuntu users who
just want to use squeak.

Proof that the solution is in place will be to download and install the
Ubuntu offered squeak and have it work with sound.

I have written the squeak-dev list and you can find the posts in the April 2009
archives by searching for Ubuntu.
http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2009-April/date.html

You were mentioned by Matej Kosik as the maintainer of the Ubuntu
distribution. So I am writing you to let you know what is going on.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated. Copying your replies to the
list will be helpful.

The actions I would like to see taken are these.

1) The priority of the bug on launchpad should be changed from
undecided to major or blocking. Computers can interface with users only through
the sense of sight or sound. To be missing one of them blocks half of their
abilities.

2) Sound can be restored to future downloads by simply coping the
vm-sound-ALSA plugin from the Etoys distribution into the squeak distribution (
the copied file to be named vm-sound-ALSA.so to go along with the naming
scheme.) Nothing more than that is needed to solve this bug.*

3) An update should be made available to 8.04 LTS and others that
checks for the squeak package, checks the squeak vmplugin library
iff vm-sound-ALSA.so is missing it recreates and installs that file.

4) These actions taken with the priority implied in step 1.

This fix would probably fix problem that MIT's Scratch is having as
well.

Yours in curiosity and service, --Jerome Peace

*You may have a wish to recreate the plugin from source. I imagine the
source for the Etoys plugin would do for a start. Or others more
knowledgable than I could point to it. The existing binaries have worked
fine in my tests.

My main point is that this is a serious enough bug that it deserves to
be squashed NOW without further delay.

[Bug 235146] Re: Squeak package missing sound plugins

2009-04-15 Thread Jerome Peace
As of 15 April 2009 this is still a current problem.

I recently started with a fresh Ubuntu 8.04 distirbution.
I am new to Ubuntu (old hand at squeak on a Mac).

I have described my problems on the squeak-dev list starting here.
http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2009-April/135478.html

Other recent posts can be found here by searching for Ubuntu in the title.
http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2009-April/

I have done enough experimentation with the problem to discover some
workarounds.

However the problem itself needs to be solved for the squeak
distribution and the vm distributed with it.

So questions:

When I ask Add/Remove to search all available applications for squeak
what package does it find and where is that package located. That is
the location and the package that needs fixing.

The fix for sound is to include the missing plugins
vm-sound-OSS and
vm-sound-ALSA (if is spelled that right).

That is the difference between the etoys distribution and squeaks that
affects sound.

The other question I have is
How can that be fix NOW?

This is a blocking level problem not only for squeak but also for
scratch.

[Bug 326609] Re: [MASTER] No flash in firefox after upgrade from intrepid to jaunty

2009-04-08 Thread Jerome Lacoste
I upgraded 3 boxes, and all had the same issue:

* package installed properly
* firefox doesn't show the plugin under about:plugins
* --reinstall doesn't work (I noticed an error message saying that the license
wasn't accepted)

Now for at least 2 machines, NetworkManager was failing (the icon
complained about it not being up), but I still had network, at least
when I tried to reinstall the plugin before rebooting. So not sure what
happened.

[Bug 336366] Re: [XFCE] Brasero does not launch from menu

2009-03-03 Thread Jerome
What version of Xfce are you running?

I am using version 4.4.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 which I'm now figuring out
is a backported version as well.

 The screenshot given,
http://www.xfce.org/images/about/screenshots/4.6-2.png, is for Xfce 4.6,
I think.

Indeed. The screenshots for version 4.4 didn't show the menu as I wanted
to for the purpose of my example, and I didn't think it would be
confusing.

is there anything on the ~/.xsession-errors file ?

No.

which menu are you activating could you tell us the name?

I'm talking about the panel applet that is called Xfce menu.
(Uper left on that screenshot :

It goes like Menu - Multimédia - Gravure de CD / DVD

I think I read somewhere this menu is created based on those .desktop

2009-03-02 Thread Jerome
I have attempted this in both 32bit and 64bit Xubuntu Intrepid 8.10.

I'm using 32 bits Interpid

Perhaps it is a translation issue? What language are you using?

I'm using french but I don't see how it could be language dependent.

Did you modify the brasero.desktop file at all?

Not before noticing the issue. Anyway I just reinstalled (through
synaptic) and the issue persists. (Still nothing in ~/.xsession-errors).

Perhaps I could go further into the debugging if I had a documentation
explaining how the Xfce menu is created from the .desktop files.

I compiled vpnc-0.5.3-1 from source (current ubuntu 09.04 version), and
have the same problem.

[Bug 257451] Re: vpnc no response from target

2009-02-25 Thread Jerome Lacoste
I looked at the code and first tried to disable DPD packets (using
--dpd-idle 0) as this was the only difference in the logged
communication exchange, but this didn't help.

I finally added

NAT Traversal Mode cisco-udp

to my vpnc conf file and vpnc works again. http://www.gossamer-

[Bug 307957] Re: brasero crashes when trying to burn a file with a # in its name

2009-02-01 Thread Jerome
I have exactly the same problem (although I understood it came from the
# only by reading this thread): I tried to burn a DVD with many files,
one of them having a # in its name, and brasero crashed after having
completed the chesksum of the files to burn (I wonder why he computes
such a checksum since there is no original md5sum to compare to).

I am willing to test the next version of brasero (all the more that I
have another - slight, this time - bug with the CD burned using brasero
0.8.2), but on the contrary to what is said on this website, brasero
0.9.1 is not available in the intrepid-backports...

[Bug 213016] Re: [regression] firefox becomes often unresponsive for long periods of time (in particular when playing flash).

2009-01-28 Thread Jerome Lacoste
I don't see the problem with 8.10 (flash 10 FF 3.0.5). Closing it is
OK.

[Bug 317827] Re: install script crashes on unknown ld option -Bsylmbolic-functions

2009-01-16 Thread Jerome Abela
I've found an explanation.

- When ecl package is built on the developer host, the flags given by
dpkg-buildpackage are stored in the install script.
- These flags include LDFLAGS = '-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions'
- When ecl is installed on the user host, it needs a version of /usr/bin/ld
which supports -Bsylmbolic-functions.
- Therefore, there is a dependency of ecl install script on that version of ld.

- binutils 2.17.20070103cvs-0ubuntu2 doesn't work
- binutils_2.18.93.20081009-0ubuntu1_i386.deb works
