Re: installation of F32 onto a ext. disk with 3 partitions

2020-06-02 Thread Joerg Lechner via users
Hi Stan,I tried a "full" installation from an USB medium produced with Fedora
Mediawriter. There are 250GB space to use on the wanted partition, where
currently F31 is installed. I want to replace F31 by F32, there was no way to
use custom installation. Automatic installation was preselected and could not
change this. I used the same installation way I had used to install
F29,F30,F31. Somethimg is wrong. If this behaviour is not wanted, it may be a
bug, Did anyone else try to install F32 on a disk with more partitions?Kind

I haven't installed F32, but there was no mention of doing away with
custom partitioning.  Was this a live image or the full install using
anaconda?  If live, was the image too large for the partition you
wanted to use?  If anaconda, was there no way to select 'custom
installation' in the menu when you reached the hub and spoke and
selected the disk branch?

Each distro creates its own directory under /boot/efi/EFI, so I have
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora, /boot/efi/EFI/manjaro. /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu.
And in each distro's directory, there's a set of the distro's own grub files,
including grub.cfg, that will bring up a normal grub menu let me boot any of my
installations. Selecting an individual distro's /boot/efi/EFI has to be done in
the boot setup screen or the 'System setup' entry in Fedora's grub menu
Hi
How do You select in using "system setup"? I can not select a partition of an
internal or external disk (Acer laptop, not very old). I can only select DVD,
several usb devices, harddisk and so on, but not a special partition of a
device.Kind regards

So does everything installed under /boot/efi come up in a menu?  And
does the grub.cfg in /boot/efi/EFI/fedora bring up a menu that lets you
select which fedora OS to boot?  That seems very straightforward.
Hi,in my case, I think I have to modify grub.cfg to bring up the entries for
F30, F31
and Windows. But currently my know how about Grub is to low, so I have to learn
about Grub.

F29 on an USB3.0 stick, copying speed about 25 mb/sec, F31 on the same USB3.0

hexdump? it has many options, be sure to read its man page.

to view a partition, hexdump /dev/sda1
to view the actual drive, hexdump /dev/sda

probably pipe its output to less:
hexdump /dev/sda | less

problem file copy to external disk

2018-11-07 Thread Joerg Lechner via users

Hi,
I copy many films (i.e. 30GB at once) to a ntfs formatted disk. 1 or 2 or more
films of them end with input/output error. A repeated copy of the unsuccessful
copied film into the same file folder ends also with input/output error,
changing the name of this film still ends with input/output error. Copying into
an other folder of the same external disk is successful. Does anyone know how
to get around? Is there a tool to display the entries of files in a ntfs
folder? Possibly I would have to remove a bit, which says "no copy -
input/output error" for this film.
I copy with the file tools of Gnome, F28/F29. Copying with Win8.1, there no
problem occurs, but it's about 30% slower then doing it wit F28 or F29.
My configuration: The original films are on the internal Laptop disk (ntfs)(win
8.1). The system is run by Fedora on an USB 3.0 Stick. The films are copied or
moved from the Laptop internal disk to an external ntfs formatted disk via F28
or F29.

silly question, verify F29, how to download checksum file?

2018-11-03 Thread Joerg Lechner via users

Hi,
when I click in the web page "How to verify" on 64bit Workstation, I get
the next web page showing the checksum file. My question is how to download
this file to initiate the verify?
So far I installed Fedora always without verifying, or with the Mediawriter,
which does the check.

Kind regards

Re: Is your USB3 slow?

2018-10-30 Thread Joerg Lechner via users

 Hi,
I use usb 3 sticks since years for running Fedora - OS on the sticks (32GB). By
the time, may be in about 1 year the USB stick becomes slow and slower, because
it's not made for OS's, it's more and more damaged, then I use the sticks for
films and fotos, where slow is no problem. On Fedora there is F3 to test. On
Windows there is a program, I think it's called Crystal Disk Mark or Crystal
Diskinfo - I don't remember, which of those - , where You can check the write
and read speed of the stick.
Kind regards

 Hi,
to avoid blocking of folders while copying from Your old system, You can make
an installation on an usb flash medium and boot Your old laptop with this flash
medium. For my copying processes (I have many of them) I use an old internal
disk connected with an usb adapter to my laptop. Old internal tested disks
(i.e. 1 TB) at ebay You can get for about 20,-€.

which antivirus sw for Fedora?

2018-09-03 Thread Joerg Lechner via users

Hi,
doing onlinebanking in my bank contract I read, I have to use antivirus sw,
otherwise I would be responsible for probably misuse. So far I made
onlinebanking, when I am logged in in Fedora without antivirus sw. But to be
correct, as the bank says, I would like to use antivirus sw. For me it's no
problem to have i.e a F28 installation with antivirus sw separatly for
"critical" use of F28. I have F28 on an usb flash medium, and 32GB flash media
are not too expensive, so fo all other usages of Fedora I don't need antivirus
sw and can use another Fedora installation. Which antivirus sw should I prefer?

Re: Problem with copying files to externel USB connected disk

2018-09-02 Thread Joerg Lechner via users

 Hi,
formatted ntfs, copied file with Windows (You can say Windoof), but still
impossible to copy with linux, I use an old internal disk as external disk
without enclosure, therefore usb adapter, usb 2 interface. The laptop is ok,
but with Fedora possibly the beginning of this error is a "path break down"
during moving the file, therefore my question, if some data of this file are
kept in a "cache" and prohibits to copy/move again, also after a reboot.
Because copying this file is still possible with Windows, I assume the file
itself is still ok.

Thoughts:
- external disk formated with fat32 => movie file > 4 GB ?
- try rsync ?
- try to move away the movie file from the disk under windoof. copy it back and
try again under fedora => does the same file make problems ?

Why do you need a usb adapter ?
Is the disk without enclosure (USB3 Interface) ?

Had a Aspice E5-574 without any errors regarding file coping via USB.

 Hi,
I use simply move (verschieben nach, German version) in the files menu
(Dateien), shown at the left hand side of the window, or cut and paste in the
files menu. Copying using the files menu shows on the one hand the files in the
internal disk and on the other hand in the external disk. I use two windows of
the files menu.

My impression is that the "blocked files" are not corrupted by the copying
process, but Fedora says the files are corrupted - MS Windows says the files
are ok.

It's impossible to answer this without knowing what you use to copy the
file. Various GUI tools have their own caches. Command line tools
generally don't.

Also, you say it works after a reboot. Does it work after logging out
and in again (no reboot)?

IIRC in older versions of Fedora there was an issue of USB buffers
clashing in some way with kernel huge pages (I forget the details),
which would make copying large files to external devices very slow, but
I haven't seen anything like that in several years.

The log doesn't give any insight. However, this is probably a bug in
the move determination logic. You should check for the issue,

Betreff: Windows eats Fedora installation USB stick

Sometimes when I try to install Fedora, Windows eats my installation
USB stick.

Fedora is distributed as a .iso (a CD/DVD image). This image is cleverly
designed such that if you dump it, byte for byte, onto a USB stick (not
into a filesystem), you get a stick that can be booted.

I install by booting this disk, usually in UEFI mode.

But sometimes the firmware escapes me and Windows is booted. For example,
if I am not quick enough typing ESC / DEL / F12 / whatever to steer the
firmware to boot the USB stick.

When that happens, Windows always seems to damage the image on the USB
stick. What the heck is up with that?

When I boot the installation stick, I always choose the option to
check the contents before booting Fedora. I do this because the
Windows damage is unannounced.

I just had it happen again. Here's the damage, as found by cmp(1). I
haven't worked hard at analyzing what it is but every changed byte
started out as zero. The new bytes don't smell like ASCII (but I'm
not great at recognizing ASCII in decimal).

Any idea why Windows makes this unprovoked attack on installation
sticks? It sure is inconvenient.

Since Microsoft is unlikely to fix this Windows bug, would it be
worthwhile for Fedora to take countermeasures? For example, ignore
exactly those bytes that Windows damages?
