Anyone know of any such software?

[videoblogging] an invitation for collaboration

2007-04-13 Thread Jason Daniels
Hey all,
I am somewhat new to this list and have been following many of the threads.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you all know about a project
that I am organizing and to invite the videoblogging community to
collaborate and take this project to the next level.

The name of the project is the 100 Second Film Festival
http://100second.ltc.org

Quite simply, it is an evolving collection of videos that are all one
hundred seconds or less in duration. The collection is creatively commoned
and projected at theaters, museums, bars, libraries, etc. Launched in 2005,
the goal has been to use the web to share the videos giving people the power
to build their own community based screenings. In 2007, that dream is being
realized in new ways.

There are two primary ways to collaborate:

1) Submit a video to the festival. This video should be of fairly high
quality (ie - close to full frame and not Flash). Email the permalink to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Tag a video on Blip with '100seconds'. There are no
limits on theme or subject matter, anything that is one minute and forty
seconds or less is acceptable. Oh yeah, the initial deadline for
submissions is July 1st. More details
herehttp://100second.ltc.org/main.html#participate

2) Create your own screening. This is a more time intensive but more
powerful collaboration. Around September 1st - we will be posting all the
videos from 2005, 2006 and the new submissions from 2007 in a group on the
collaborative software platform SpinXpress -
http://www.spinxpress.com/jdaniels/100_Second_Film_Festival.

As an example, I am involved with at least two separate screenings in
Massachusetts which will be composed of lots of local videos that will be
posted to the Spin group. For the balance of the screening (an 80 minute
show) I will be pulling videos from the Spin group. Another screening is
being planned in the UK and that screening will feature local works plus a
different slice of videos from the Spin group. Those interested can join
our group and use the software to sort of sculpt their own festival out of
the videos available. As a community event, it is usually a pretty
successful draw. If you still have public access TV in your area you can
work with them, too.

Some of the best from 2005 - 2006 are complied into this video on the
Internet Archive.

Wow, so wait...

1) you can use it with your laptop without violating the terms of
service, you don't have to get a second device and a whole nother
plan.

2) it's only $40/mo, how much data, that can't be unlimited?

3) what's the data coverage like

4) what kind of speeds?

5) and out of curiosity what's the latency like. Latency is actually
the biggest issue. For example when it's good i get about 400ms when
pinging google... as opposed to 40ms or less when on broadband... once
it gets above 700ms... or god forbid 1400ms it's useless for browsing
web pages.

Verizon eh? Not exactly on the top of my least hated mobile providers

[videoblogging] Introductions: the birth of my videoblog.

2007-04-13 Thread Devon White
Hi everyone. I've been around the group for a while, lurking, posting
every once in a long time. I set up a videoblog a few months back but
couldn't get the technology right so i went back to the drawing board
- this time with Shane and Roxanne (www.barefeetstudios.com and
www.beachwalks.tv) at my side. They've done a really wonderful job for
us. (Thanks guys!)

Now, we've gone live (www.SexWithDevon.tv - fyi - there's some
explicit content) and posting on this list is
like a Southern belle coming of age and having her coming out
debutante ball - it just has to be done.

My girlfriend and i (she's usually behind the camera) do a weekly show
- although we posted a bunch of videos right away so there are a few
shows already up.

Honestly, most of the technology conversations on here are pretty well
above my head. My real passion and interest is in behavioral
technologies, evolution, and how the nervous system functions. Which
is how i got into talking about sex. Whenever i did
lecture-performances at colleges on co-creating reality or quantum
hypnosis or exquisite decisions i'd get like 12 people in the room.
But sure enough, when i titled it, The Best Head Ever i'd get a
packed room with hundreds of horny kids.

Anyway, there's no official introduction to the videoblogging group on
the site, but having these thesis-long digests in my inbox every day
for something like two years has been the driving force for me to get
up a videoblog of my own and participate in the conversation and the
redefinition of media.

Thanks for the inspiration.
And thanks to Mike Meiser who's been telling me to get involved for years.

Cheers to you all,

Devon

p.s. I'm new to this medium in every way. I feel like a pubescent
teenager and I have no idea what format the show will ultimately take.
All i know is that i love doing this and i want to do it more. So,
please, any and all feedback is welcomed. And if you have a link you
think i should put on my blogroll, please send it my way. Best to you all.

I am on Verizon Wireless, and at 2 bars of reception at our home, we
get anywhere from 2k per second to 20k.

In town it screams. I'll have to get an accurate data rate, but it is
quite fast. Not quite open cable modem speeds, but pretty close to DSL.

I'll try to get into town and give you some figures. It's definitely
worth looking into.

this month. Justin Kan of Justin.TV is walking around San Francisco with a
camera strapped to his head and EVDO cards in his backpack for continuous
live video. And last night, Chris Pirillo had Ustream.TV, Robert Scoble's
Twitter might, and a blogger across the border to pull together a live
report on the Mexico City Earthquake:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4502606569188610270hl=en

Of course, folks were more excited by the technology than the earthquake...
agog over the implications for news distribution and citizen journalism.
From the energy that collided in Pirillo's show, it's chear the simmering
potential is there. Scoble is going to do his own live-from-phone coverage
of a conference next week.

Periodic and archived video is vital -- after all, someone had to record
Pirillo's live show to re-live it today! -- but it looks like pervasive
live video, lifestreaming, whatever you want to call it, is here a lot
sooner than most would've predicted.

Of course it is exciting and has its place in the mix of networked media.

It is amazing how fast all things video have progressed in just about 2
years.
I suppose i expected most of it and i recall some early discussions on
this list by doubters who said nothing big will happen for at least 5
years then the online video boom began.

Live streaming is certainly not any sort of replacement or even a comparable
form of distribution to progressive downloads and archived media. But it is
just as powerful and necessary, primarily for communication (which bleeds
into entertainment). For journalists alone, it is huge. Art making...
maybe less so.

I'm not sure how practical the technology is right now, but its fun to see
the experimentation being done.
Justin.TV is obviously for making a point and to demonstate what is
possible... but nobody is going to walk around with a fat camera on the hat
like that.

Oh yeah, its all kind of freaky too ;)

Re: [videoblogging] Our Apple TV Settings

2007-04-13 Thread David Meade
Thanks Casey.

Will this sync to the ipod as well? I know there is some magic range
of settings that will sync to both.

Granted, its a trade off. AppleTV can support settings the ipod
cant, but rumor has it that even at this compromise videos still look
good on TV.

For those interested parties... you don't have to export from Movie
to Apple TV. With these settings, you can get a file %50 of the size
you would get with the default settings. Just click on Movie to
QuickTime Movie in QuickTime Pro and enter the settings in this

If you're using 4:3 instead of 16:9, put the dimensions as 640x480

True. Live performances, VJs at Clubs and the such So it can cater to
art making, in the moment.
I suppose everything is recordable too so maybe my point was that it is not
practical for some typical video artists/editors as opposed to
experimentalists who are doing performing art. Image Quality is certainly
important and a factor. Though I still have fun with a Pixelvision camera
;)

[videoblogging] Re: pyro.tv transcoding and rehosting your stuff

2007-04-13 Thread ryanne hodson
i'm referring them to the vertigo aggregator best practices

http://videovertigo.org/information/aggregation/

though i'm not seeing on there
a specific clause about transcoding and re-hosting
other than this phrase:

Aggregators should always conduct video playback in the video's original
player, rather than the aggregator's player.

i don't think that's specific enough..
that says original player, not original format.
technically would that be considered the same thing?

because quicktime just has one player
flash could possibly have different players
so i'm a little confused on that wording.
