[videoblogging] SAG New Media Contract [Was Re: Will Hollywood kill the web-only stars]

2009-01-22 Thread Casey McKinnon
It's time we re-ignite this very very old thread about unions.

I suggest you all read Rick Rey's blog post about the SAG New Media
Contract:
http://blog.rickrey.com/post/72430502/regarding-the-sag-new-media-contract

Zod help us,
Casey

PS: This post is mostly for those people interested in making shows
and using talent (or even friends) who are members of SAG... most
personal vloggers aren't really going to be affected, lucky them :P

PPS: I'm going to be contacting SAG for clarification, and to see if
it's possible to make web series under the SAGIndie umbrella... but if
not, I propose we march our indie new media army to the next open SAG
meeting to express our opinions. I also agree with Rick Rey's idea to
send an open letter to SAG as well.

[videoblogging] Interesting YouTube/Google discussion

2007-05-02 Thread Casey McKinnon
Hi everyone,

I was on a panel today with a lawyer from YouTube/Google and asked him
some hard hitting questions about giving content creators more rights
to their content on YouTube (changing the terms and conditions or
accommodating CC licenses, etc.). I got some great feedback and
encouraged him to suggest new practices at YouTube that could make a
lot of content creators happy.

1- He says that YouTube/Google is very interested in Creative Commons
licenses (he should know, he actually used to WORK for Creative
Commons), but that they hadn't found a way to really incorporate it
into their site yet. He said that there is an ongoing discussion as
to how they can incorporate this.

2- He says that YouTube respects double licenses. So, if you want
your content to be released under a CC license, indicate that IN THE
VIDEO and upload it to YouTube. While you adhere to the regular Terms
and Conditions of the YouTube registration agreement, your audience
must adhere to the terms of your CC license.

3- Over dinner tonight I made a suggestion... Since many content
creators are worried about YouTube terms due to their ability to
broadcast and sublicense your content without notifying you first, I
discussed the possibility of having an opt in or opt out checkbox
so people can tell YouTube very clearly whether they want their videos
to be viewed on the internet only or if they are cool with their stuff
being shown/sold on other platforms. This a very simple way
(technically) to change the terms for people who are dead against
their content being used cross-platform or without their knowledge.
He was VERY receptive and positive about this idea and says that
someone at YouTube actually suggested something similar last week. He
says he will look into this idea further.

That's about it! Basically, I learned an important thing that I
wouldn't have believed before... YouTube is not evil :P

Hope you're all having a good day,
Love, Casey

In all honesty, I don't care about trying to highlight Canadian

why force Canadian content on Canadians?

I'm just worried about the implications of a regulated new media... no
more ass-rape gags on GALACTICAST and no more sexually suggestive
topics on KITKAST. We couldn't have made the content we've made if we
were regulated by the CRTC.

How are we to be sure that this isn't the CRTC's way of cramming their

product placement in the show. Considering it takes place in the
future, in a galaxy far...far...away (wrong show, I know), it would be
practically impossible to put any logo driven products into this
scripted show. No Starbuck sipping on a Pepsi, Baltar sporting D G
eyeglasses, or an Ikea eyepatch for Colonel Tigh.

It also dawned on me that I was also a person that never clicked on
post-roll, or pre-roll ads in web video. Frankly, the advertisements
usually never have anything to do with the video you just watched, and
I'm gone before they have a chance to transition into view.

Then I started thinking about all the free advertising a lot of you do
for these companies. Josh Leo's HR Block video, might has well been
sponsored and paid for by Mar's, Inc.

I did some searching for companies working on automated product
placement tools, and found Nextmedium.com. They pair the studios and
advertisers of scripted TV shows through their software. They also
give back analytics to the advertiser on the shows viewership,
 impression views, etc...

Would this be something producers of popular video blogs would like,
instead of hoping to get someone to click on an post or pre-roll ad?

[videoblogging] An E-mail From Creative Commons

2007-01-14 Thread Casey McKinnon
I must apologize for taking so long to post this, but I felt it
important to report back to the group on my efforts to get in touch
with CreativeCommons.org about the MyHeavy situation.

The synopsis of the e-mail includes:

1- Their suggestion to create a wiki or blog page on the Creative
Commons site to clarify the re-vlogging netiquette (for CC licenses);
2- Drawing our attention to a page they've already created about best
practices in marking work: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Marking_work

I think the first suggestion is a good one and we can all link to the
wiki/blog page once we've all collaborated on clarifying re-vlogging
netiquette.

The second suggestion is also smart, but I find the page to be
incomplete. I know that Rudy and I for one do not want to use the PNG
image provided to mark our work... we made a conscious decision not to
use the image for last week's show. Perhaps we can talk to CC and see
if there is a basic info that we SHOULD include in our videos without
using that specific image.

I will copy this message to Mia from Creative Commons so she can
follow the discussion.

Without further ado, here is the full body of the e-mail I received on
January 6th for those of you who like to read in full:

---

Hey Casey,

Just following up on our phone call yesterday. I'm also copying Ryan
Junell on this email because is also a member of the videoblogging
list and suggested that maybe I get on the list to join in a
discussion of the dos and don'ts of using CC-licensed videoblogs. Not
sure what you think of this suggestion. I've also copied Jacqueline
who is also a member of the community and contacted me about it and
Colette Vogele, who I think you or your colleagues have already been
in contact with...just trying to bring all the strands together!

I did a quick Google search (as you do) and saw this posting (http://
groups.google.co.ke/group/videoblogging/browse_thread/thread/
98829d66d523d7f5/1395d3313c1c2d3a) that someone was going to meet
with a MyHeavy.com rep this coming week...maybe it would be good to
have the discussion on the list before then so that people can go to
the meetings with good and strong information. I also really like
the idea of a re-vlogging netiquette. CC would be happy to post to
its blog about this issue and we could also post the re-vlogging
netiquette (as it relates to CC licenses) to our wiki (http://
wiki.creativecommons.org/) if you guys thought that was a good idea.
We've already tried to start a page about best practices in marking
CC licensed videos: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Marking_work. As
I discussed, I think in terms of preventing a repeat of this
situation that education and information gathering are really
important...of course, legal options are always available but they
can be very messy, costly and time-consuming and should generally
only be used as a last resort.

Colette, Ryan and Jacqueline or you may have other suggestions...I'm
all ears...

Let me know your thoughts.

[videoblogging] Defending the Creative Commons license

2007-01-05 Thread Casey McKinnon
After the whole MyHeavy debacle, I believe it important to discuss our
Creative Commons licenses. I don't believe we need to change anything
about the licenses because they are pretty thorough already, but since
this is the second (known) time that we have had an issue with sites
disregarding our licenses, I think it's important not to sweep it
under the rug too quickly.

I believe our next step should be to reach out to the Creative Commons
community and ask them for an opinion and how we should deal with the
situation in the future.

The truth of the matter is that most of us do not have the funds for
legal representation so we need to figure out what options are
available from the larger internet community. I have no doubt that
the good people at Creative Commons have dealt with situations like
this before and I believe that they may have a lot to contribute to

2007-01-03 Thread Casey McKinnon
I just wrote a blog post about it here:
http://www.galacticast.com/2007/01/03/on-notice-myheavycom/

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to MyHeavy:

Subject: Notice of Copyright Infringement

Dear MyHeavy,

I wish to inform you that you have been illegally re-posting our
content on MyHeavy.com. Galacticast (http://www.galacticast.com) is a
web video show that is released under a Creative Commons
Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 license
(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/), which means:

   1. Attribution †There must be a link back to our original post
at Galacticast.com
   2. Non-Commercial †You may not make profit from
re-distributing our work (unless we have signed a pre-arranged
licensing agreement)
   3. Share Alike †Our content must be re-distributed under an
identical license.

MyHeavy has violated all three of the above clauses by not linking
to our site, profiting by banner ad sales placed before and during our
videos and by re-releasing our show under a “Copyright MyHeavy”
license instead of the required identical Creative Commons license.

It has come to our attention that you have also infringed on the
copyrights of other web video producers using other web hosts (Blip TV
and Google Video) by re-posting their content without their knowledge.
Be assured that we have already informed everybody in the
Videoblogging community about this.

Please contact us to establish a licensing agreement. Otherwise,
take this as notice to remove our content immediately. We expect you
to reply directly to us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or to Mike Hudack at
Blip TV ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) within 24 hours.

Please note that a copy of this e-mail is being posted at

I believe that we should demand 100% of the profits they made from

Our real problem is that we as a community do not have legal

[videoblogging] Re: Congdon at Apple

2006-12-23 Thread Casey McKinnon
Television
–noun
1. the broadcasting of a still or moving image via radiowaves to
receivers that project a view of the image on a picture tube.
2. the process involved.
3. a set for receiving television broadcasts.
4. the field of television broadcasting.

Show
–noun
19. a theatrical production, performance, or company.
20. a radio or television program.
21. a motion picture.
22. an exposition for dealers or the public of products by various
manufacturers in a particular industry, usually held in an exhibition
hall, convention facility, or the like: the annual boat show.
23. any kind of public exhibition or exposition: a show of Renoirs.
24. ostentatious display: nothing but mere show.
25. a display, exhibition, or demonstration: a true show of freedom.
26. an indication; trace: He frowned on the slightest show of emotion.
27. the position of the competitor who comes in third in a horse race,
harness race, etc. Compare place (def. 27b), win1 (def. 16).
28. appearance; impression: to make a sorry show.
29. a sight or spectacle.
30. an unreal or deceptive appearance: The actress's tears had the
show of grief.
31. an act or instance of showing.
32. a motion-picture theater.

If you look at the difference between the two terms you'll notice that
Television is a method of delivery. Video blogs are an alternative
method of delivery, therefore although Dictionary.com hasn't altered
their definitions to include internet-based shows, it's easy to see
the difference between TV and Video blogs.

[videoblogging] Let's band together to do something about Global Warming!!!

2006-12-22 Thread Casey McKinnon
Okay, listen people... this is important.

We have no snow in Montreal... NONE. I seriously believe that we are
being affected by global warming and would like to know if you are
being affected as well.

If so, I would like to propose a community collaboration:

- Make a vlog entry about global warming and how it is affecting the
weather in your area;
- Tag it! (What do you think of the tag vlogforglobalwarming?)
- We should make a collective site to post the videos in a central
location (with link backs to the original posts)
- Promote it heavily to see if we can make a difference in the world...

Feel free to show your concern and even rant at your government for
not doing enough...

Let me know what you think about this... it's sad that the winter
wonderlands that many of us grew up in will not be white for Christmas.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro, but try this:

- Right click on the file after it's been imported

Like I said, I don't have Premiere Elements, but you never know!

I was able to change the default options for new projects to
widescreen. No
problem, the new project opened with the little video placeholder

the sceneline view set to 16:9 ration. But when I tried to add a clip in
widescreen format Premiere squished it into 4:3 and added black bars

terrible. I know I changed something to do with pixel ratio, and
based on
the lousy output quality I have to believe that was the wrong way to

[videoblogging] Re: any Toronto or Ontario vloggers out there? recent alleged terrorist arrests

2006-06-05 Thread Casey McKinnon

Hey Heather, Montreal vlogger here.

I'm no Muslim, but why are you SAD to hear about these arrests? Would
you rather have heard that the CN Tower, Parliament, the Peace Tower
and the Toronto Stock Exchange were all bombed at the same time? I
know I wouldn't.

I'm reading the newspapers and blogs but would really like to hear
from real people. If there are any Canadian vloggers who are doing
some interviews with people, please let me know, I'd love to see them.

Also, I'm sorry that I won't be at vloggercon ( I have a gig in LA
that day). I'll be posting a vlog introduction soon.

[videoblogging] Linux Militants (Was Re: Anyone have Linux?)

2006-06-05 Thread Casey McKinnon

Just wondering if any other videobloggers have been hassled by a Linux
journalist/user named Malcolm Dean about the format of their vlogs...

Although I posted a message here last month asking if Galacticast
works on Linux and I got unanimous responses from the group and other
friends not on the group saying it works fine, this guy is telling us
we should format our stuff in ancient MPEG2 formats!

The thing is; we already have 5 different formats: H.264 .mov, .wmv,
standard iPod .m4v (which is an MPEG compression), 3gp and YouTube
flash. And since I've been told by at least 4 different Linux users
that it all works fine, this guy SEEMS to be acting like an ass about it.

Has anyone else had to deal with this guy before?

Does anyone else feel weird about having to RSVP and add their own
name to the Click.tv party wiki? It's a shame we can't just show up...

Yeah, it's listed on the Vloggercon wiki here:
http://wiki.vloggercon.com/index.php?title=Saturday%2C_June_10th

But, they ask you to confirm your attendance in advance here:
http://clicktvparty.wikispaces.com/RSVP

I'm used to either getting an open invitation and not replying or
getting an exclusive invitation and RSVP-ing. This is just foreign
and uncomfortable to me! Perhaps it's from working with diplomats too
long...

2006-05-29 Thread Casey McKinnon

Well, it's a short documentary that has to fit three purposes, and one
actually is for TV. So, in its natural state, it's a little under 15
 minutes long.

Thanks for the data rate advice.

 Rhett.

Rhett- Follow Michael Verdi's advice... I used the Freevlog tutorials
to compress Kitkast (kitkast.com) and I often had shows between 13-15
minutes. If you follow Freevlog's tutorials, you'll probably get it
down to about 60 MB.

Google Adds Video Capability to AdSense
 Move Greatly Increases Online Inventory

 By Abbey Klaassen
 http://adage.com/article?article_id=109419
 Published: May 23, 2006
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Google has made no secret about its ambitions
to become a bigger force in the branded rich-media space and today it
launched online video advertising on its AdSense network of publishers.

Paramount Classics has already tested Google's new video ad program
for its film, 'An Inconvenient Truth'.

The program has been in beta testing for the past six weeks, said
Gokul Rajaram, product management director for AdSense, with such
advertisers as Paramount Classics for the film An Inconvenient
Truth, Fox Home Entertainment for DVDs of The Simple Life and
General Motors Corp. for its Pontiac G6. The ads can be served on any
Google publisher that currently displays graphical ads from Google.
The video ads are static and boast a play button that activates the
video.

Josh- I think you'd be great at doing something like All By Myself

Slow... powerful... painful... beautiful... yet silly as h3ll...

[videoblogging] Re: MissleBlast vs. RocketBoom

2006-05-22 Thread Casey McKinnon

It's the mirror universe RocketBoom... wrong in so many ways. It's
not badly made but they've gone about publicizing their show in a
completely different way. They're YouTube/MySpace whores (and that's
not an insult... just an observation).

I've actually been watching the show regularly simply out of
curiousity... I'm not a big fan, but it's an intersting concept to
follow; a blatent ripoff.

Although I, personally, am not drawn in by the charm of Ms. Melankey,
my friend Vince is smitten...

I have a feeling these guys are here to stay... the only problem is
that the audience demographic is so different to Rocketboom that I'm
not sure how advertizers feel about the copycat nature of the show.

Only time will tell... as it will with all of us...

It's 4:26am and I'm still up editing with Rudy,
Casey

[videoblogging] Anyone have Linux?

2006-05-18 Thread Casey McKinnon

I just got an e-mail from a guy asking why Galacticast isn't available
for all operating systems... apparently he was irate because it wasn't
working on Linux. As far as I can tell, if he downloads the .wmv file
onto his computer and opens it into his default player (Xine), it
should work...

Does anyone use Linux and wouldn't mind checking it out for me? I
don't want to leave anyone out in the cold just because they choose an
alternative to Windows...

Thanks,

Hehehe... nice one, Shane. I actually had NO idea that the Survivor
finale was last night... we just made the skit because we liked the
concept! Oh well, free advertising for them I guess...

Take care,
Casey

[videoblogging] Re: My daughter has a video blog.

2006-05-15 Thread Casey McKinnon

I love it because she's living in her own world... something like me
as a child (and perhaps even as an adult). I was living in the 23rd
century playing 'Star Trek' with Michael Verdi! (Or was it 'doctor'
with Halcyon...?)

How many people can say they own a domain name that is their first

Rainlin took these movies by herself, before I even knew what she was
doing. Then she came up to me and said, Mommy, can we make me a
video blog now? She's been asking me for weeks.

So I sat her down in front of Roxio, and an hour later she cranked
this out. I swear, she did 99% of it herself--there was only 2-3
times I actually touched the mouse. I was amazed.

Oh--by the way--she's seven years old. But if you watch the video,
  you'll catch that. ;)

I set her up a feedburner account too:

[videoblogging] GALACTICAST officially launched and ready...

2006-05-13 Thread Casey McKinnon

Hey guys,

Well, we were in the testing phase for a while and we've finally got
all our smeg together... iTunes is now working great since we've
started an independent iTunes feed.

We're really happy with the fan film/mashup we posted today and hope
you enjoy it as well
(http://www.galacticast.com/2006/05/13/survivor-dune/).

Sorry for those who prefer log-vlogs, but this is indeed a variety show!

Yours in videoblogging,
Casey

Any chance I can get in on this panel... or is it just for you? As
the topical 'boob' that caused quite a stir on this issue back in
October (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/25209), I
believe I feel I may be able to contribute to this discussion.

Well, I'm not one to not argue. I like topical videoblogs. It's just
when
they try to replicate TV that I start to wonder why they're doing
it. Like
the examples that Adam gave - Human Dog and Carp Caviar - topical
but very
un-TV-like (except when they parody TV). To me they're very
personal. If you
haven't seen the conversation I had with Chris Weagel about it you
should

Anyway, I made a video about this URL:

and I'm
organizing a panel about it for Vloggercon. So you don't have to
flame me
here - you can do it on my vlog or in person in San Francisco next
month. :)

[videoblogging] Re: What is Your Definition of TV

2006-05-12 Thread Casey McKinnon

Entertainment, idealism, dreams, horror.

Here's my list of best shows on TV now:

- Battlestar Galactica: Although sci-fi, it makes me cry every show
with it's realism.
- House: Clever wit and sarcasm... and I still can't believe that's
actually Hugh Laurie!
- Gilmore Girls: I completely identify with Rory Gilmore... yet
another young talkative opinionated brunette. I just wish I also had
her stylist!

I only really enjoy stuff that brings out extreme emotions in me... I
watch these things to laugh, cry with pain and cry with happiness.
This is what television is to me and this is what I hope is carried on
in all entertainment, including videoblogging.
