[videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?

2007-07-12 Thread Laura Moncur
After looking at the poster, I'm wondering if it doesn't fall into the
fair use category. It was a faded background image and it wasn't the
only photo on the poster.

Don't let this go to court, Lan. You might lose everything.

[videoblogging] Mac Questions

2007-06-20 Thread Laura Moncur
I am switching from my PC to Mac and I'm trying to decide if the new
MacBook Pros with the NVidia video chips are worth an extra $1000.
Have any of you noticed a big difference between the MacBook Pros and
the normal MacBooks?

It takes forever to render a DVD on my PC using Adobe Premiere
Elements and I'm hoping to streamline the process.

Additionally, is Final Cut Pro worth the extra $600 or should I just
go with Final Cut Express or even iMovie/iDVD? I am having a hard time
justifying the expense to my husband. Can you give me any ammunition?

[videoblogging] Re: Mac Questions

2007-06-20 Thread Laura Moncur
Thanks to everyone! That really helped me a lot.

Since I'm not doing any 3D rendering, just straight video, it looks
the the normal MacBook with as much RAM as I can get will be the best
for me.

I'm going to try out iMovie and see if it's enough and then move on to
FCE if not.

Thanks again!

[videoblogging] Re: The Shallow Nature of Video Blogging

2006-06-03 Thread Laura Moncur

Okay, I'll bite.

The reason our small glimpses into our lives are just as important as
the carnage that is happening in Iraq is because it's all HISTORY.
Five hundred years from now, historians are going to be looking at our
vlogs trying to fathom what life was like during our time. We are
going to be the journals that document ordinary life just like Jane
Austen's writing documented Victorian England.

[videoblogging] Re: MGP and The Shallow Nature of Video Blogging

2006-06-03 Thread Laura Moncur

In answer to your questions, I think Michael Verdi has an excellent
site teaching beginners how to vlog

http://freevlog.org/

He really taught me how to get my video on to the web without using
companies like YouTube that own a piece of your copyright when you
upload them. I watched a panel at SXSW that talked about how to add
video to your weblog, but the panel didn't teach us much. The website
did, though.

It's a little Mac-centric, however. All the comments in this group
are. Since 80% of the market is PC (I'm guessing on percentages, but I
know it's a majority), you REALLY need to have someone who can teach
people how to do things with a PC.

I struggled for a long time and did some reviews of video-editing
software for PCs:

Maybe these resources can help you.

Good luck,

I've been fascinated by the discussion about 'The Shallow Nature of
Video
Blogging'. Enric asks what this has to do with videoblogging. I
think that
is a very good and important question. Personally, I want people to
view my
work. I want them to think that I've said something important. I
want to
change peoples lives through my work. (Granted most of my work is still
text based and isn't really life changing. That is part of why I
come here
to learn from some of you.)

I guess my reaction is something like this: If a videoblogger posts
a video
of a tree falling in the forest, and no one watches the video, does it
 matter?

In light of all of this, I would like to take Enric's question to
return to
talking about technique, method, and related activity. What
technique's and
methods are going to help me produce videoblogs that people won't
dismiss as
 shallow?

I have a very specific motive in this. I am convening the citizen
filmmaking track at the Media Giraffe Project summit at University of
Massachusetts, Amherst on June 29th. I am looking for the videos that
illustrate the depth and beauty that videoblogging can provide. I'm
looking
for people that can help others improve their craft.

So, let me ask you a favor. Can people on this list nominate people and
 videos that I can contact?

** Who are the best people to introduce others to how to make online
videos?
Here, I'm looking for real nuts and bolts stuff here. Who can speak
best
about different cameras? Who can speak best about different editing
tools,
 etc.

** Who are the best people to introduce others about making animations?
Here, I'm looking at various styles, Flash, Machinima, 3D animatios,
AMVs,
 etc.

** If you could attend a master class on film making, aimed at
videobloggers, who would you want to teach the class?

** Who are the best people to talk about getting videos distributed
online?
Here, I'm thinking about the people that can talk most intelligently
about
pros and cons of different services like YouTube, Blip.TV, vSocial,
ClipShack etc. I'm also thinking about the best way to get other
people to
find your videos. Thoughts about sites like current.tv etc.
Finally, I'm
interested in if anyone is doing stuff with bringing the best of
video blogs
beyond the web, for example to public access TV.

** Finally, what are the best videos out there?

Please let me know your thoughts on this. Don't be shy. Feel free to
nominate yourself if you think you have something special to offer.

 Aldon

[videoblogging] Re: clean wiki for Vloggercon

2006-05-30 Thread Laura Moncur

I looked at the wiki for the events. It would be really helpful to the
people from out of town if the addresses for the events were included.
For example, I have NO idea where the Apple store is. According to the
rumors in SLC, there is an Apple store on every corner in San
Francisco just like the churches here.

Are we supposed to call the names of the people on the wiki to RSVP?
Should there be an RSVP thing on the wiki?

Thanks...
