Gary,

The interesting thing about your question was that it took me less than a
minute to know what I'd do and it took me less than 5 minutes to figure out
that there's no reason not to do it now or at least start to do it now
so rather than say anything about it I'll just say, thanks for the
inspiration and then I'll post again when I start uploading the videos

What would your dream vlog be? You know, if some company or some wealthy
individual came to you and said I'll pay your expenses, make whatever vlog
you'd like, what would you do?

Me, I'd blog the story of the families forced off their land during the
Highland
Clearances in Scotland and who sailed to America to make new lives; the
vlog
would tell the story on both sides of the Atlantic. So, what story would
you
tell?

[videoblogging] Assistance and feedback for Richard's Wife Please

2006-11-16 Thread Lisa Ours
Hiya Gang,

I'm sending out a plea for some help from the group. Richard's wife
recently did a vlog titled: Blue Star of Hope. It has a part 1, 1.5 and
2. Could folks please go to the site and view the vlogs and then could you
please post back with answers to the following questions?

1. How did you view it (flash version, QT version, Windows media version)
2. How long did it take to download?
3. How was the quality of the video?

Richard is of playing at Vlog Europe currently and Richard's wife is doing
all of this stuff solo right now. She's noticed some slight buggyness with
the download times in certain formats and could really use some
compassionate feedback on the list to assist in working out the bugs.

Thanks in advance to everyone for your help with this. Richard's wife would
have emailed the list herself except that she hasn't got an email that can
handle the volume nor does she have the extra time so I am being the loving
and dutiful Daughter and assisting her in this effort.

Cheers,
Lisa (daughtershow)

Born at 10:34pm ET on Friday, June 2, 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Five pounds, 12 ounces, screams like a Beatles groupie, has my hair

before I started losing it, as well as my impatient temperament.

Mother and child are resting comfortably while I obsessively upload

photos to flickr at three in the morning.

This is the first of what I'm sure will be thousands of videos of

Kayleigh. That is, until she's old enough to hold the camera and turn

it on us. With a vlogger and a documentary maker as parents, you'd

think it would be inevitable. :-)

I'll try to upload more videos over the weekend.

This for sure not a stupid question.

You could ruin your equipment if you used oil based products. (I do
not know if WD-40 uses oil thoug) WD-40 will dry very quick, collects
dust and that will jam your tripod again.

I used silicone spray for my tripod lubrication, this spray specialy
made for non metal lubrication. (Use outside do not inhale!!)

Where to buy silicone-spray.

Most likely they have it in a hardware store like Home-depot, Menards,
Ace-hardware for about $3 or $5 a spraycan.

It works great for drawers, garagedoors, inside and outside doors,
everything that sqeeks. Do not spray it on areas that have to be
painted because the paint won't stick anymore!

Whew, okay. I just finished peaking under every rock I could think of
to find all the women videobloggers I could find and I came up with
around 70. I was actaully quite surprised - it never seemed like that
many - not that 70 is that many.

So, okay... I promised myself that I would give back (not that I'm
like out of it to be giving back - but you know what I mean) to the
vlogging community somehow. And I do like the idea of collaborating -
even though I'm often short on time. So in an attempt to bridge a
virtual gap of sorts I created this collective: http://vidlicious.com

I really want to see more women creating video. I want us to find ways
to work together. And I often like that we don't agree on things
because it keeps us on point and thinking and finding solutions.

This collective vlog is just one big link loving/video-making fest. So
please email me if you'd like to join. If you don't email me, I'll be
forced to spend another night sending out 70 individual emails asking
for support. I'm hoping it benefits us all as it continues to evolve.

Okay, I'll be waiting!

PS: And if you know of any female vlogger I missed on the list, email
me that info too. Thanks...

RE: [videoblogging] Vlogging dangerously...brainstorming session

2006-04-03 Thread Lisa Ours MA PLPC
I know for me, I took the concept to mean out of my comfort zone or
Doing something you wouldn't normally do Perhaps a little bit of
exhibitionism if your an introvert... even a small amount of exhibitionist
behavior can be dangerous for someone who is really Buttoned up.

I hate being in front of the camera so... I love to do footage of others
doing things but having to be the one on is really hard and uncomfortable
so I'm figuring on trying to be in a few things this week as opposed to
running the cameraEwww... I already feel dirty just thinking about it.

Anyway that's my two cents worth on the concept...

Cheers and VLOG ON!

So, Amy and I are having a hard time coming up with dangerous vlogging
ideas that we can fairly easily do. We also don't want to do something
too asinine or juvenile (ala Jackass or Trigger Happy TV stuff) because
that's so farr of the usual vision of our vlog.

I'm sure there are others with a little creative block, too, so how
about a little brainstorming? What, to you, embodies vlogging
dangerously?

We're already doing a piece on a gay rodeo going on down here. That's
pretty inherrently dangerous. Other things we were thinking about...

...trying to evangelize the great Flying Spaghetti Monster.
...doing a glamorbomb and vlogging the results.

Honestly, though, finding dangerous material that can be done around
the constraints of a dayjob is pretty tricky. What other ideas have
people had?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Premiere Confusion...HELP?

2006-03-15 Thread Lisa Ours MA PLPC
This is just a humble suggestion from the peanut gallery... but:

When I capture my video I do a bit of Mini-editing during capture. I tend
to Pre-view the footage I've taped and then rewind and Stop capture on
portions that are either obvious bad shots or not central to the plot line
of my end product. That way I automatically cut some space and time off of
the production before I even begin my editing process.

Perhaps that could help you as well seeing as how you are dealing with
limited drive space.

Cheers!

If I were in your situation, I would Export Movie (project) to .avi,
then once I check to see that the .avi is working properly and it's
the way I want it... I would delete all the clips (your 50 minutes of
footage) and start a new project using the .avi file you just made.

That's not a bad idea. I can turn the .avi back into individual clips,
then, using the split tool, right?

I'm surprised you have that much footage!  When I film Kitkast, I end
up with about 50 minutes of footage as well, but my show is 10 minutes
long!  I sure hope you're not recording in between takes...

This was on-site taping of the a gay pride festival in Ft. Lauderdale. We
were on site for a good 6-7 hours and there was a lot to shoot. Besides
that, we wanted to make sure we had good footage of large crowds of people
so we could edit in a feeling of bigness, and for me, that meant making
a lot of throwaway footage.

I like the concept of a Copyrighted Material limited Use Fee I know I'm
willing to pay to download music from one site or another for a nominal fee.
If I like the CD I'm still gonna go out and buy it at Sam Goody or Tower so
I can get the cool cover art and lyrics, photos etc.

If I'm willing to do that then It stands to reason that I'd be willing to
pay a yearly subscription fee of a reasonable amount to a site that would
allow limited use of material by more famous musicians, film-makers, etc.
How realistic is it that the Big Guys would ever do this? Not likely at
all unles the faceless masses bring it to somebody's attentioncome to
think of it... do we have a Vlog Lobby?

I don't expect the law ever to do that, nor would I consider it fair.
Artists have a right to decide how their music gets used. If and when
someone asks me to take down any of my videos because they don't like my
use
of their music, I will certainly do so, though I firmly believe that my use
is not doing the artists any harm and may even give them some useful
publicity (I tend to use music not currently popular). But of course they
would have the right to disagree with me.

What I would like to see is a mechanism in place that any artist who wishes
to can participate in, which allows me to use music as stock photography is
used, as Gottadiva describes. The way things are now, it is prohibitively
expensive for everyone except the really big players to use the really big
music _legally_. I ran across an article a few months ago about the
problems
professional documentary filmmakers have with music in their films, even
when the music occurs naturally in the environment they're filming, e.g.
a
ringtone.

All that said, I just did a count and find that I have around 70 videos
which involve no music except what was already there (e.g., sing-alongs at
home, parades and other public events). I have deliberately added music to
only 13 or so of my videos, and in most cases the music is mixed in with
the
original sound such that you could not strip it out and get a clean audio
track, and/or is edited.

CC is a nascent movement;
of course it doesn't suit every need right now. but
the likelihood that CC could grow as a popular
movement into the sort of thing that suits your/our
needs is much greater in my opinion than the
likelihood that the united states congress is going to
suddenly have an a-ha moment, ignore entertainment
industry lobbying groups, and magically stop
repressing remix culture.

Until Napster, there was little pressure on the music industry to lower its
prices (up to $30 for a single CD in Europe!) or improve its distribution
methods or even face the fact that a lot of people don't like so-called
popular music. Now there's a solution that I think everyone can agree on
(iTunes et al), but I doubt this solution would have arrived without
consumer pressure to let us have what we want, how we want it - and then
we're willing to pay a fair price for it.

It seems to me the same could happen with remix culture. It shouldn't be
legal for people to use anything in any way they wish. But if the industry
and the artists were willing to meet us halfway... they might even find
whole new sources of revenue they never imagined.

I think the only vlogging mistake one can make

is not vlogging

   1. It irks me when people use copy protected material that they don't
have the legal right to use. For example many vlogs use sound from
