2008-09-10 Thread Rob Parrish
Dear Schlomo,

I've met you just once. And I enjoyed it. Even more, I've enjoyed
your videos over the years. If you stop comments, you stop people
like me --- not really your friend, not your family, just a guy you've
crossed paths with --- from communicating with you directly on your
vlog/videoblog/blog with fucking video/whatever. Sure, sure, you
might think, when was the last time he (me) commented on a video. I
know it's been awhile. But, hey, I've been busy, and I miss fireant
like hell -- my old computer runs Miro for shit, and iTunes sucks . .
. but I've been watching.

Ok, so don't do it!

[videoblogging] Miro Not Working Well for Me

2008-02-23 Thread Rob Parrish
Hey all,

Background -
I'm running Miro 1.1 on an oldish pre-intel mac laptop. My laptop hd
is nearly full, so I'm writing the videos to an external firewire drive.

Problem -
Miro is very buggy. It often takes a long time to switch between
feeds, and the playback is very choppy for some videos. Lots of time
spent looking at the spinning rainbow of death. No crashes though.

I miss my Fireant!!!

I also, oddly enough, had problems using the Miro forums.

So, how's Miro working for you?

Rob

know there is a good alternative.

I also had problems enough with Miro that I have switched full-on to

always update feeds when it was supposed to, and no matter how many
times I would attempt to remove a file from the list once I had
watched it, it would always be there when I opened up the program the
 next day.

Netvibes has been working great for me. I love the way it is set-up,
and I like that I can organize more than just my RSS feeds. I can
view my e-mail, Flickr photos, ebay, craigslist, and the weather all
in one place (among many other possibile combinations). It updates
feeds when it is supposed to, and I can easily toggle between the feed
view in Netvibes and the vloggers actual website. Really liking it.
 Anyway, my two cents.

Another way to do this in FCP is to copy and paste the low audio track
into another track. The problem with this is that you are also
doubling the noise in the track. But, it might work with the right
track if you're in a hurry.

When I open the clips in Quicktime, they are already at the maximum

When I bump up the level in iMovie to the maximum (150%), they're

[videoblogging] Last Next To Heaven of Season 1

2007-09-12 Thread Rob Parrish
Hey All,

I posted the first Next To Heaven on September 19, 2006, and today I
post the 52nd. A year's-worth of weekly short movies made from
archive.org's public domain footage – pretty impressive, if I do say
so myself. I had a great time making NTH, and I think I learned a
thing or two as well.

Please check it out and if you don't know NTH, you're in luck -- 52
entertaining and/or disturbing videos await you!

[videoblogging] Re: Last Next To Heaven of Season 1

2007-09-12 Thread Rob Parrish
Thanks Bill and everyone for the kind words. I do think NTH sharpened
me up a bit. I think its a great exercise for any non-professional
artist/filmmaker/musician to put yourself on a schedule and create.
Not having all the time in the world actually makes some cool stuff
pop out. The random nature of the images also made me tell stories in
a way I wouldn't have otherwise. But, looking back on it, all the
stories are close to the things I'm interested in. So, in the end,
throwing something random at yourself can end up simply pushing
forward the things you wanted to say anyway. Like a Rorschach blot
(off topic, but hear they are making a movie of Watchmen -- can't wait).

As to what was challenging, there were several archive movies that sat
around for months, and while I liked them, I couldn't think of a thing
to do with them. Some are still on my hard drive, not used, others
suddenly came in handy . . . out of the blue. This goes back to
working on a schedule, it forces you to keep turning your raw
materials around in your mind.

As far as the one I'm most proud of, that's hard . . . but check out
this one, its probably the most profound . . .
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/06/next-to-heaven-38_05.html

Also, I won a $1,000 bucks for this one, which is a big video payday
for me!
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/04/next-to-heaven-33-tapes-of-my-father.html

As to the archive folks, I've just recently dropped them a line. They
are amazing, what a great service to the community. I love these old
films and would have had a great time just watching them without any
project to feed into.

Hi:

My old Sony MiniDV cam died. I replaced it with a Panasonic that can
shoot in 16:9. Any views on the best way to shoot in 16:9 then
compress for vlogging? I currently do duel pass compression with 3ivx.

I did notice that the image darkened a bit when I resized in with
quicktime player to get the widescreen effect (720x480 to 875x480).
Also, when I tried to compress the 875x480 file to 437x240 - 3ivx
didn't generate an image, just black. This whole pixel shape thing is
a bit daunting. So, if anybody has already invented this wheel I
would be great to hear about it. Thanks.

[videoblogging] Re: Promotional Vlogcaster needed-part time

2006-05-16 Thread Rob Parrish

Last night I read the sexism/objectification of women discussion on
the yahoo vloggers group. I thought I would join the discussion by
sharing a video I made in the late 1990s. It chronicles an experience
a friend of mine had involving sexual harassment in Venezuela. I
juxtaposed her experiences with imagery from one of America's great
celebrations of sexism, the Miss America Pageant. Check out the movie
 at http://www.hoppervideo.net/2006/05/miss-gringa.html

I believe that human beings inherently love beauty. The problem with
our culture today is that we have fetishised a particular version of
female beauty and elevated it above all other versions of beauty. So
the fact that a person seeking a large audience attempts to recruit a
mouthpiece that satisfies the current cultural fetish is not
surprising. The question for all of us, as makers of media, is
whether we want to be part of an effort to expand society's conception
of beauty or do we simply want to play it as it lays and cater to
the current state of our cultural development.

Peace,
Rob

[videoblogging] Re: Best quality video?

2006-01-02 Thread Rob Parrish
I don't know if DiVA involves quality loss. I use it to get small
sized files up to TV resolution because I put my stuff on TV as well
as on the internet. It looks good, and the files get much much
bigger. So, I assume I'm doing the oposite of compressing (expanding?).

You did remind me that on the archive.org FAQs it does mention that
you can use Cleaner to do the conversion work to. I don't own Cleaner
so I didn't pursue that.

again
(albeit into another file type)? I'd rather not lose any more
quality than
has already been lost in compressing to MPEG2 in the first place.
Please
let me know if I'm wrong about this.

What I've discovered in the past couple of days: I *may* be able to
convert
the MPEG2 file to DV using a tool called MPEG Streamclip, but I'd
still need
 to purchase Apple's Quicktime MPEG2 thing to do so.  That's another $20;
perhaps there's another (less expensive) way?

Well Harold, you ask a complicated question. If you're just
going to
compress for the web, I don't know the best answer. However,
if you
want to have a 720x480, 30fps version, then MPEG2 is the way
to go.
The conversion process is a bit time consuming, but you end up
with a
very good looking movie. It can be done with freeware. Let
me know
if that is is what you want and I'll tell you how to do it.

Hey Ron:

I think Apple might be having an issue. My art and info appeared this
a.m. . . . but now its gone. I did post a review during that brief
wonderful moment that I existed in the eyes of iTunes, maybe Steve
Jobs didn't like it. :-) (for the record, I identified myself as the
site's author in the review -- speaking of which, the review was
simply selected quotes from comments left on the site. I identified
them as comments, but did not reveal the authors. I assume its ok to
use comments for publicity. What says the group?)
