Good stuff Randy,

This is a nice demo of what can be done with the mogulus.

Wish I could join your live conference this Friday - but the time won't work
here in Tokyo.

Keep up the good works.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Introduction / Sanyo Xactis and tiny camcorders

2007-01-28 Thread Scott Lockman
Hello Diana,

Welcome to the list. Lot's of useful answers have preceded this one, so I'll
be brief.

I've owned an Xacti HD1A for about one month. Though it is at the top of the
price range for small sized recorders (86,000 yen), I've heard that the
price is already dropping. Perhaps this is becase Sanyo announced the HDA2
at the recent CES.

I am too much of a novice to speak with authority as to it's image quality
other than to say that it is good enough for me.

In addition to it's compact size and use of memory card instead of tape, I
was compelled to purchase it over the lesser-priced Xacti models for two
reasons. One is it is designed to allow optional wide-angle and telephoto
lenses, and two, it has a microphone input. The camera comes with an adaptor
wire that steps down a 1/8 micro-connector to whatever smaller sized input
the camera has.

I use an audio-technica lavalier microphone when I want to record my voice
in the field. This is crucial because the onboard stereo mic elements are on
the back-face of the pop-up display screen. If I'm watching myself with the
display screen swiveled in the same direction as the len, the microphone
elements are facing away from me.

My apologies for not being brief, as I promised. Overall, I give it high
marks and would recommend it.

Good luck.

respectfully,
Scott Lockman

[videoblogging] The Apple Store guy says...

2007-01-19 Thread Scott Lockman
Hello,

A student of mine relayed an interesting bit of information she was
told at an Apple Store in Tokyo while shopping for Final Cut Pro
recently. She was told that FCP would not install on a Mac Book -
that she would need a Mac Book Pro to install and run the application.

At least two students in the class said that they have FCP running on
Mac Books.

The same student was given similar information regarding the
incompatibility from independent Mac dealers.

I don't know what to make of this. How come people are being told
that FCP won't work on a Mac Book if other people report that they
are able run the program on that computer? Does it mean that the Mac
Book doesn't meet the technical specs of Final Cut Pro but can still
run it?

Can anyone confirm what the sales staff have told my student?

Thanks.

Re: [videoblogging] Introducing: tokyo_calling_vlog

2007-01-18 Thread Scott Lockman
Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond on this thread or to leave
a comment on the Tokyo Calling blog. This first week of vlogging has been an
amazing experience. I feel hooked!

Harold, yes this is the same Tokyo Calling podcast that you would have been
listening to two years ago. I remember discovering Something Happened on
another blog that reviewed both of our early podcasts favorably.

Just a bit of follow-up on the first week. Thanks to recommendations from
group members and Ryanne's H.264 for iPod screencast on FreeVlog.org, I've
finally been able to get a video that looks better on something bigger than
an iPod.

I followed Ryanne's steps on Episode
4http://blip.tv/file/get/Tokyocalling-tc_vlog_004516.mp4and am
generally pleased with the results. I wonder if the 80-90 minutes it
took to compress the video on an MacBook Pro (2GHz with 2GB or RAM) is
normal for an 11 minute piece. The original dimensions were 640x480 as shot
on the Sanyo HD1A and were shrunk down to 320x240. Would I save time in
compressing the final video in iMovie if I shoot in 320x240 instead of
640x480? Any thoughts appreciated.

Best regards,

Clear answers and helpful explanation. I will follow your advise and do some
experimentation with different settings.

H264 takes a VERY long time to compress in exchange for VERY
good-looking video, even when greatly magnified.

Shoot as large a frame as you like. There are people shooting in HD
and compressing to 320x240 or 320x180 (widescreen).

Most likely, you have it set on 2-pass, meaning it takes extra time
checking out the file in order to make the best compression. Leave
your settings the same, but make it 1-pass H264 if you can. Compress
the same 11-minute file and see if there are time savings. If so,
then check to see if you're satisfied with how the video looks. If
you like it, keep compressing 1-pass instead of 2-pass.

Another option is to lower your frame rate. If you're shooting 29.97
video, try bringing the frame rate down to 24 or to 15. If you think
the video stutters too much, increase the rate.

A third option is to not use H264 at all. Use mp4 at much higher data
rates. That will be much faster, but the file will end up being a lot
larger and tougher for lesser computers to process.

Re: [videoblogging] The YouTube debate is over..........

2006-12-04 Thread Scott Lockman
You know it's the real deal when it gets transformed from a noun to a verb
ala Rocketboom, Man, they Rocketboomed my video - I'm famous. Or Google,
as in, Jimmy's chances of getting the job evaporated the moment the head of
HR googled his name.

Such was also the case when FOX's Jane Skinner said that everyone would
YouTube her when she had so much trouble saying, Top Cop on the air
recently. She was right! They YouTubed her with a vengeance.

Linguistically, the iPod seems to be precluded from such grammatical
shenanigans. The pronoun I at the front makes it very difficult for iPod to
ever be more than a clause or a simple sentence. It doesn't seem to be able
to work as a verb in the same way as google, rocketboom or youtube do.

Many have tried. Who can ever forget when Robin said, Holy homophone, I
can't believe I pecked and I pawed my way out of the slums of Gotham just to
wear these leotards, mask and boots to Batman? Though sounding like iPod as
a verb, it just isn't gonna work.

Zune it appears to have a far better chance of being used as a verb the iPod
ever will. And it has Minesweeper, too. End of discussion!

Thank you,
Scott
