I suppose once it's an extension, it would be easy to adapt (easy as in, I
could do it myself?).

Until it's done, maybe we could try to add MMSI: to core. It's seems fairly
simple and the result would be most helpful.

[Bug 30361] Ease positioning of images in relation to headings in the text

--- Comment #1 from Derk-Jan Hartman hart...@videolan.org 2011-08-14 11:30:13

This is bewildering for editors and somewhat impractical. It does not fit with
the idea of section editing.

It is how HTML works though. I don't see how we could do it any other way.

In projects like the German Wikipedia (and many more), putting an image at the
same hight as a level 2 section header also lets the underline of the header
text bleed through in the margin of the image.

If a project uses the standard CSS definitions of the Vector skin, this
should no longer be the case, since the last software upgrade a couple of
months ago.

Suggestions for ACTUAL specific CSS changes are always welcome, but this
request doesn't seem specific enough to make any implementation decision upon.
Closing as worksforme.

 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux

 Severity: blocker

Installing Drafts on a latest MediaWiki installation running on SQLite gives a
blank page. Disabling the extension fixes the issue.

MediaWiki 1.17.0
PHP 5.3.2 (cgi-fcgi)
SQLite 3.6.20 with full-text search support

Installation of Drafts and running update script was successful though.

Any solutions?

the domain is still visible for visitors while there are only red links there

Please remove the wiki and place a this wiki does not exist page instead like

decides that the WikiNews is big enough we can move it back.

That's a bug, but it's probably due to commonswiki not having a

[Bug 22773] [PrefixSearch] Namespace name part of prefix search query should not override given namespace id(s)

2011-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22773

--- Comment #4 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-08-14 13:57:00 UTC ---
Just brought this up on IRC. Seems it's not possible due to performance to
query multiple namespaces in the same query because the index is on
page_namespace,page_title. So that would mean that searching for Foo in
namespace 0, 5 and 10 would likely only give results for the namespace 0 since
it's ordered by namespace and then by page_title.

For it to make sense we'd have to do multiple queries (one for each of the
wanted namespaces). Then in PHP combine them and sort them by page_title and
then by namespacename (not namespace-id).

So prefix Foo, with namespaces=0|2|4 would give:
['Foo', 'Abbawiki:Foo', 'User:Foobar']

I just finally looked into this patch, and realized that it's a patch for core
MediaWiki, not the Approved Revs extension - which explains why various people
have been commenting on it. Perhaps this should be assigned to someone else,
then? And renamed? (It was my mistake for assigning it to myself in the first

[Bug 30368] New: Moving a page without redirect does not remove it from unpatrolled newpages

2011-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30368

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 30368
 Summary: Moving a page without redirect does not remove it from
unpatrolled newpages
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.17
 Platform: Macintosh
OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.6
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Recent changes
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: t...@tommorris.org
Classification: Unclassified

If a sysop moves a page without a redirect (i.e. you delete the redirect page),
the source page does not get marked as patrolled: from the perspective of the
new page patroller (on Wikipedia etc.) there exist pages in the NewPages queue
that do not exist and can not be marked as patrolled without a bit of hacking.

(The hacky solution goes as follows: you take the link from the NewPages queue
and substitute the title argument from the query string with the page name of a
known page - on English Wikipedia, I use 'Main Page' as that can be relied on
to exist unless an overeager admin deletes it for a bet - and then click 'mark
as patrolled' on the main page, which will remove the revision from the
NewPages patrol. This is, of course, a rather clumsy solution.)

The expected behaviour is that when a page gets removed by
move-without-redirect, the source page should be marked as patrolled and
removed from the NewPages patrol. In addition, the new pages list should
probably also have the target page of the move-without-redirect listed as a new
page (although for English Wikipedia, the consensus of the community may need
to be sought as to whether move-without-redirect target pages should be placed
in the new pages queue or marked as autopatrolled by dint of them being moved
by an admin).

Basically, should the mark as patrolled tag be moved when an admin moves a page
without redirect? If it should, the software doesn't currently do that.

This is similar to bug 16877.

--- Comment #3 from T. Gries m...@tgries.de 2011-08-14 16:23:05 UTC ---
Solved. It was merely a problem of the documentation, which was not clear.

- changed the http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RSS page in the parts
which were unclear
- refactored the code, a compatible new version 1.9 will be released soon
- which harmonises the (namespace) use of the two templates in the extension
code
- and comes with meaningful predefined templates in the i18n file
- the new default templates come from MediaWiki:Rss-item and
MediaWiki:Rss-feed, or a previously Template:RSSPost page, if this
exists
- added a live example of rss max=5 http://blog.wikimedia.org/feed//rss to
extension page http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RSS#Example (after
having found that MediaWiki runs the extension, which is nice)

[Bug 30369] New: No way of knowing how many '|'-separated values some parameters can take

Bug #: 30369
 Summary: No way of knowing how many '|'-separated values some
parameters can take
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.17
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement

Component: API
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: danwe...@web.de

Classification: Unclassified

Some API Modules like action=query offer parameters that take multiple values
separated by '|'. But for a bot class, there is no way of knowing how many
values are allowed and when sending more than the limit, there might be no way
of knowing how many have been rejected in some cases.
For example, you want to export revisions, you would call something like
api.php?action=queryrevids=1|2|3|4|...|1000|1001export, trying to request
1001 revisions to be exported, you would end up with only 50 or 500 (depending
on whether you are a bot/sysop or whatever) without even knowing it.
The only clue, the API will give you is a warning tag within the result. The
information given there doesn't really provied machine friendly semantics
though. Its just:
 warnings
query xml:space=preserveToo many values supplied for parameter
'revids': the limit is 50/query
 /warnings
There should be some more machine friendly information provided to check
whether the request must be sent in little portions or not. Pretty much like
the query-continue tag when running into result limitations.

When some unicode stuff is put in summary, in history pages or Recent changes,
it is wrong displaid

Example :

History of eo:Uzanto:محمد الجداوي

While copiing pasting we get a good result:
(ar:مستخدم:محمد الجداوي)
(arz:مستخدم:Mohamed ElGedawy)
(ar:مستخدم:محمد الجداوي en:User:محمد الجداوي)

in the history page appear squares and greek letters but not the arabic. It is
confusing.

$wgOut-addHTML( Xml::openElement( 'table', array( 'class' = 'TablePager' ) )
);

$wgOut-addHTML( 'thead' );
$wgOut-addHTML( 'tr' );
$wgOut-addHTML( 'th' );

Things like that, just suck

Having a table object(or something)..

$table-openTable();

$table-addHeaderRow( array( 'foo', 'bar, 'baz' ) );

$table-openBody();

$table-addRow( array( 'lol', '1', '2' ) );
$table-addRow( array( 'zing', '3', '4' ) );

$table-closeBody();

$table-closeTable();

Or something, whatever, would be nicer...

Maybe some part of OutputPage or something?

I think I have the same problem. I upgraded from 1.16.5 to 1.17. At the last
step in the web upgrade process, I got an error page from my browser:

/!\ Content Encoding Error

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or
unsupported form of compression.

* Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.
[Try Again]

My wiki displays fine, but whenever I edit a page I get the error message about
iwlinks does not exist.

I have tried to restore my backup and repeat the process, and the same thing
happens.

If a wiki developer is interested in taking a look, I can provide a dump of
parts of my database prior to the upgrade.

I think it is a issue with the API. I have deactivated the API for normal user
and IPs. For admins the watch/unwatch tab is working.

Although the script should indeed not attempt to use the API if it's disabled,
my I ask why you have the API disabled for non-admins ?

Anyone familiar with JavaScript and jQuery should be able to do this:
* Fetch the page names from the page
* Make a request to the API for those titles with the categorymembers
querymodule
* If the returned object contains a certain category store it in an array
* Create a CSS selector fed to jQuery for all these page names and call
addClass()

how about fixing the actual issue, namely, that patrolling only allows for
unpatrolled and patrolled states. What you want is a third state, basically
found to be bad. So, how hard would it be to add support for more than two
states to the patrolling feature?

unpatrolled and patrolled states. What you want is a third state,
basically
found to be bad. So, how hard would it be to add support for more than two
states to the patrolling feature?

It wouldn't be too complicated, but it seems to be out of scope for the
patrolling feature. Mainly because patrolling is for revisions, not pages.
Assuming the latest revision for the entire page may be okay for the
FlaggedRevs extension but not for core patrolling.

This sounds like a great feature request for FlaggedRevs, or perhaps
FlaggedPages.

Another long-time proposal that seems to overlap with this a little bit is the
Special rights requests queue extension. An extension where users can make
request for certain actions to be taken that they do not want or are
unauthorized to perform (page moves, user blocks, user right changes, deletions
etc.)

Such an extension could then hook into patrolling of core, FlaggedRevs or both
to filter out ones that have pending requests for a certain action (eg.
delete).

The obvious conclusion is though that neither templates, categories or long
pure-wikitext pages are a long-term solution to deletion requests, page moves
and the like (as also concluded by Jimmy Wales' talk at Wikimania 2011).

One of the things I believe are needed by many wikis is a queueing system where
users can make requests for certain actions to be taken. Although it doesn't
have to be limited to, I think the most common purpose of it would be
performing actions that require user rights that the requesting user doesn't
have. Think:
* Deletion
* Blocking
* Moving
* Adding/removing user groups (Patroller, Rollbacker, Admin, etc.)
* etc.

By having this in a nice interface it will provide many advantages:

* It can be given an intuitive interface that users can learn to recognize
across wikis. It would also have proper translation for many of the interface
components. Make it easy to find the request for deletion page on any given
wiki.

* Saving time for admins
** being able to query a list of deletion request that haven't been resolved
yet
**

* Saving time for users
** being able to query requests by namespace, page title, user name etc.
** Finding information related to a log action (right now admins usually
copy/paste permalinks into the log reason, which is annoying, time consuming
and not user friendly, not to mention the fact that log reasons are not parsed
which means other users then have to copy the link back from the reason into
the addressbar to read it). Instead admins would be able to log with a link to
something like Special:Requests/105123. Heck it could even be stored in the
log_params so that it can be used to automatically mark a request as resolved
once the action is performed.

* Hooks for other maintenance tasks (in PHP for eg. bug 30134, but also through
the API. I imagine an awesome dashboard for admins with stuff they can do!)

* Uniform indication of status (perhaps even issue tracker like with status
(assigned, open, resolved, etc.)

* Sky is the limit :D

The key is really in the details. The discussion part should probably hooked to
LiquidThreads.

[Bug 30374] New: Allowing fixed position menus

2011-08-14 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30374

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 30374
 Summary: Allowing fixed position menus
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Vector Skin
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: en...@walla.co.il
CC: asha...@wikimedia.org, tpars...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

It has been requested in Hebrew Wikipedia by some users to allow customization
of the menus: Sidebar menu and top menu [edit, history etc], to have fixed
position, so when scrolling the page they will still have easy access to menus.

I enable this option as a gadget, containing the following CSS:

div#mw-panel{
position:fixed;
}
#p-lang .body{
max-height:100px;
overflow:auto;
}
div#mw-head{
position:fixed;
background:#FF
url(data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoNSUhEUgEsCAIrRUU2GXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPDpJREFUeF5VjUkOAEAIwoD//7lzGJd4MJHGSoBImkFETP67CdLldUd7KC6f8fv3+psd8znbtU5x354HaWQjOx76v7MASUVORK5CYII=)
repeat-x bottom;
}

(the gadget page itself:
http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%93%D7%99%D7%94_%D7%95%D7%99%D7%A7%D7%99:Gadget-FixedMenu.css
)

It works well as a gadget, but some people suggested it isn't specific to
Hebrew and maybe other projects may want it too: so I would like to suggest
adding it as an option in preference for fixed menus.

Known issues
*Works only in vector skin.
*As the sidebar may have height larger the document height, part of it can be
inaccessible in some situations. For this reason I added limitation of 100px to
interwikis (p-lang). This may not be enough, and it dependence on document size
(user specific - resulotion/window size), sidebar height
(mediawiki:sidebar/extensions that adds to sidebar - site specific) and so
on. This issue is relevant only to the sidebar and not to the top menu.
*Browsers compatibility - the above is very simple css, but some old browsers
such as IE6 doesn't support position:fixed.

I doubt this is server side. See for example how fast
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFilesuser=US+National+Archives+bot
is going.

Etienne: How as is you internet connection (up and download)? What file size
are you trying to upload and how long did this take?

Etienne: You are
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFilesuser=Ebe123
right? What tool do you use for that? Maybe the tool is just slow (I know
commonshelper can be very slow).

FWIW, I'd like to say that parsing the IRC feed is really unreliable, and
always will be unreliable. We need a better push-interface for recent changes
notifications.

I have written the XMLRC extension for this purpose. It uses XMPP (aka Jabber)
to send RC notifications as XML, formastted in the same way the MediaWiki API
returns them.

XMLRC is not ready for full scale production use yet, but with a little love,
it could get there. But this will only happen if the WMF makes it a priority to
have a decent push interface for recent changes.

Imho, this is pretty much what Gadgets are for.

The ability to share Gadgets across wikis is being worked on at this very
moment and is scheduled to be released by the time MediaWiki 1.19 is ready.

Roughly:
* Develop gadgets like we do now
* If you want to share something, move or ask someone to move it to the central
gadget wiki (probably mediawiki.org) and mark it as a Shared gadget.
* At this point it will be in the preferences on all wikis as a Global gadget
that anyone anywhere can enable.

We support this in some of the older skins (floating sidebar preference).
Should probably remove that from core and make it a gadget like Krinkle
suggests.

Yeah, that's what I've been coding lately :-) Roan has reviewed it and he will
likely deploy it one of the following days, so the content of the referenced
URL will magically change! :-)

However, the current wiki does not exist (yet) page is much more
user-unfriendly than that (e.g. it doesn't mention the language name; it's not
translatable, ...) so I do want to have those non-existing wikis refer to
Incubator. That's my plan at least, and I will do everything to make that plan
work :-)

Is this bug in any way
to blame for the fact that pt.wiktionary distinguishes between Norwegian and
Nynorsk and not between Bokmål and Nynorsk? (en.Wiktionary seem to know what
they are doing, they just need to do a little cleaning up.)

Likely, yes.

Does this cease to be an issue if no.wikipedia moves to nb.wikipedia?

Yes. But that does not seem a likely outcome.
